On 1 June, Doug and I had the pleasure of meeting with our son, Matthew, at Mardi
Gras World, New Orleans, to witness the commissioning of the brand new 154 ft. cutter, Margaret Norvell.
The Margaret Norvell is the fifth (of a planned fleet of 58) Sentinel class Fast Response
Cutters that will be patrolling our waters for search and rescue, counter drug and migrant operations, fishery regulation, and homeland security. She has a beam of 25-feet
and a maximum sustained speed of more than 28 knots. The Margaret Norvell is
armed with a stabilized 25mm machine-gun mount and four crew-served .50-caliber
machine guns.
Matthew is a plank owner on this ship (an individual who is a member of the crew of a
ship when that ship is placed in commission) and will be patrolling out of Miami, FL.
He is a Boatswain Mate 2nd Class and has been in the Coast Guard for 10 years. We
are very proud of Matthew.
It was very exciting to be there to see the ceremony! The ship was commissioned, the
new commanding officer, Lt Thomas R. Osborn, Jr., was given his orders, the first
watch was set, and the crew stood at attention on deck as they brought the ship to life!
All the alarms went off as the deck gun moved back and forth!

The name sake of the ship, Margaret Norvell, has an interesting story. She was born
in1866 in Washington, DC. (Her great grandfather designed the Washington Monument!) She migrated to New Orleans as a child. She married Louis Norvell and he
became lighthouse keeper at Head of Passes Light in Louisiana. When he tragically
drowned in 1891 leaving her with two small children to raise, she became assistant
lighthouse keeper and served there until 1896.
In 1896 she was appointed keeper of New Canal Light on Lake Pontchartrain where
she served until 1924. Four times each day she climbed the light’s station 60 feet of
steps to wind the lights machinery. She made heroic rescues throwing ropes to crews
on yachts and schooners during storms and giving them shelter in the light station. She
left there to serve at West End Light from 1924 to 1932.

One of her most famous rescues occurred in 1926 when she received word that a naval plane had gone down in Lake
Pontchartrain. She got her rowboat underway and battled a merciless squall for two hours on the lake. She found the
aviator who had crashed, rescued him and rowed them both back to safety.
Margaret’s role as a humanitarian and community leader were most evident during a storm in 1903 that swept away
every building in Buras, the small community where she lived. Her lighthouse’s sturdy structure remained the only building that could provide shelter, and she cared for over 200 people who had been left homeless by the storm’s unforgiving
winds and rain.
Margaret served in the United States Lighthouse Service for 41 years, from 1891 to 1932. She was one of only 140
women lighthouse keepers in the US Lighthouse Service.
She died in 1934 at the age of 68.
It’s interesting to learn what heroic people did to provide safety on the water. Thanks to people like Margaret Norvell, our
waterways remained safe for everyone on-or in-the water.

While shopping recently, I noticed a big bottle of hand
lotion with a message printed onto the glass.—”Imagine
your best life and decide to live it every day.”
As I turned this concept over in my mind numerous
times, the message finally sank in. Most of us take each
day as it comes with little or no thought of what that
day might have been if we had done just a bit more preplanning and mixed in some self discipline.
What would your “best life” include? Would it be one
free of financial worries? Would the people we dislike
at work suddenly disappear? Would the responsibilities
we have for other people suddenly be shared by someone else? Would the mate of your dreams appear like a
genie from a bottle? Would all your physical aches and
pains vanish like magic. How about all the little hurts
you’ve been carrying around inside for years, would

MUSTANG SURVIVAL ISSUES VOLUNTARY RECALL NOTICE ON MD2010 & MD2012 model 22LB
Inflatable Personal Flotation Devices
In keeping with Mustang Survival’s commitment to the highest levels of product quality and safety, we are voluntarily recalling all model number MD2010 and MD2012 inflatable
Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s) sold in the United States during 2011. To determine if you are impacted by this recall please reference the images below:

This recall is being issued for the inspection and repair of an inflator installation inconsistency that may prevent some units from fully inflating. Mustang Survival has developed a
solution that corrects any affected product and prevents re-occurrence of this issue. The inspection and repair can only be performed at a Mustang Survival factory.
This recall notification is for only the MD2010 and MD2012 22LB buoyancy inflatable PFDs. No other Mustang Survival products are affected as they utilize different inflator mechanisms.
All MD2010 and MD2012 PFD’s without the stamped MIT logo as shown in Image 3 (above) should be returned to Mustang Survival for inspection. All other Mustang
PFD’s are okay for use.

D/5 Sail Regatta and Fishing Tournament
Solomons Island, MD
Patuxent River Sail & Power Squadron invites everyone in D/5 to the 2013 Sail Regatta and Fishing Tournament to be held
in Solomon’s Island 27–29 September.
This year the event is being held mid-Bay, where the sailing is good and the fishing outstanding! Our host is Zahniser’s,
one of Maryland’s premier marinas. There are plenty of accommodations and restaurants available for all: The Hilton Garden Inn in Solomons has offered us a good rate, other nearby hotels include the Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, and many
B&B’s. Restaurants near the marina include Stoney’s Kingfisher, the CD Café, the Captain’s Table, Solomons Pier, and
many more.
Solomons Island is a great place to visit in September. The Calvert Maritime Museum is a major attraction. Please come
for a great weekend of fun! This event is more than just sailors and their halyards; more than just fishermen and their lures;
it’s the last boating event of the season with great camaraderie, wonderful food, and a real taste of Southern Maryland hospitality.
Being located within range of the southern Bay squadrons we have heard that the northern Bay squadrons are hoping to
receive some challenges from the best that the southerners have to offer! There! The gauntlet has been thrown down.
Come for some friendly competition!
For a detailed schedule of events see the registration form on the D/5 Website. Generally, you should plan on arriving Friday afternoon for the welcoming party which will be held at Zahniser’s and then you’re on your own for dinner. We’ll have
breakfast for you Saturday, then plenty of organizing and captain’s meetings. The Chesapeake Cruiser Association (CCA)
has made arrangements for box lunches for participants The regatta and tournament will take place Saturday afternoon.
The Awards Banquet will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn – dinner will include appetizers, a choice of two entrees, and
dessert, with a cash bar. Transportation will be provided. Sunday morning we’ll serve a “Good Bye (or Farewell) Breakfast”
which hopefully will include a taste of the fish caught on Saturday!

Lighting the way….

It’s great to be back in peak boating season! Many great times shared and many more great stories tell. Case in
point, we just came back from our summer rendezvous at Tilghman Island, MD. I would like to thank all that
came to the event and special thanks to Kathleen Nowroozani for leading and planning the event. XO, wife,
mother, future kung fu master, she does it all!
We sometimes forget how impactful a trip out can be. I was reminded of this when my son Vince asked if we had
to leave, and could we stay a few more days at the summer rendezvous. Both boys had a blast, this trip now a
part of their childhood experiences growing up. These are the memories they will share with each other and
hopefully pass down to their families down the road. Next year’s location has not been finalized, yet discussions
are in the works to be able to boat by the Statue Liberty and Ellis Island,. Stay tuned, more to come!
At Spring Conference our website was recognized based on the work done by Fernando Botelho. During our
squadron meeting held on 10 July, I awarded Fernando his Distinctive Communicator pin and appointed him first
lieutenant based on the work he does as web master for our squadron. Please congratulate him at our next
event.
Speaking of upcoming events, we have an exciting lineup for the back half of 2013. Bowling night, an Iron Pigs
game, this year’s chili cook off, and our Fall trailer boat rendezvous at Lake Wallenpaupack, just to name a few. I
look forward to seeing you at an event. Feel free to bring the family or a few friends, they are always welcome!
I am very excited to attend my first summer council D/5 meeting this year. There will be ceremonies celebrating
USPS’s 100th anniversary. As you commander I will be proud to represent Delhigh at this historic event.
Reflecting back to the summer of 1912, twenty Power Boat Division vessels under the leadership of John Upton
rescued the crews of the forty windjammers on the annual Boston Yacht cruise to Portland, Maine. A nor’easter
blew in and dismantled and disabled all vessels under sail. No losses were reported, thus beginning our steep
history of boating safety and being there for others. I look forward to passing this pride and civic responsibility to
my children and many more generations to come.

Delhigh Summer Rendezvous was a huge success as far as
I am concerned! We came out in the black and made less than
$1 per person. This is an expensive weekend for members
looking to boat together and have fun, it is not where I want to
make money, so this was great! However, members attending
the Saturday night dinner did participate in a 50/50 and a donation raffle, which did bring in some money for the squadron. I
hope that everyone had as much fun as my family and I did,
and soon as we recuperate we can start thinking about next
years.
Boat Shows and Parades 3-6 October is the United States
Powerboat show in Annapolis. 10-13 October is the United
States Sailboat show, also in Annapolis.
D/5 Activities 1-8 August District Cruise. 9-11 August Summer Council and Rendezvous in Cape Charles VA. 1-8 September National Governing Board Meeting in San Antonio TX.
24-29 September is Trawler Fest at Harbor View Marina. 2729 September is the D5 Sail Regatta, Fishing Tournament and
Fall Festival. ALSO 2 November is the 18th Annual Land
Navigation Contest hosted by Delhigh, so let’s all put it on our
calendars so that we can show up in force to support this event
that is new to the D5 calendar!
PR and Marketing We are handing out our new folders with a
copy of the Delhighlights at all of the classes that we teach
AND at the PA state boating courses that Peters Marine employees are teaching, hopefully soon this will yield us some
new members! It’s time to get some new stories to hear and
someone new to tell all of our old boating stories to!
Co-op Charting Beverly Strothers is still our only member
actively involved, she lives in Florida and has put in 20 hours
for Delhigh this year! Hopefully we can get an activity planned
up here for next year that we can do as a squadron activity.
Ahoy Mates! I hope this boating season is turning into a
great one for you! It’s been a lot of fun for me, but boating in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy deposited a lot
of debris in the water has made it very interesting! I
really feel as though the things I’ve learned through
boating education have helped me to have a safe and
fun season this year! I want to encourage all of you to
continue your boating education and sign up for Delhigh’s courses and seminars soon!
We have recently completed two seminars, Trailering
and Anchoring. Thanks to Gary Corcoran for teaching
the Trailering seminar!
The Cruise Planning course has been completed and
I’m happy to report all 8 students passed! Congrats to
Gary Corcoran, Keith Knoblach, Fernando and Michelle
Botelho, Cyrus and Kathleen Nowroozani, and Doug
and Kathy Mckenzie! Thank you Ginny for a great job
instructing the class!
Thanks go out to Bobby Michner at Peters Marine. Kathleen Nowroozani and I taught the PA Safe Boating class
there to 31 students and we were able to introduce Delhigh to some new boaters who weren’t familiar with the
Power Squadrons. Bobby also made a $50 donation to
the squadron for helping him with the class so it was a
win-win for us!
Enjoy the rest of the boating season and we’ll see you in
class this fall!
