the Issue No.1. 1893. Term 2, 2015 The was, the is, and the will be of Walford. { Contents & Introductions Hello girls! CONTENTS Here it is! The future of Walford is in your hands and beckoning you to turn its pages. The first ever copy of the 1893, Walford’s very own student newspaper, which, dare we say it, is all about you! ……… • The Glee Report… .2 • ….3 Formal ………………… • …….4 Club Corner………… tment…..5 • The Music Depar • ……6 Lifestyle……………… • …… Reviews……………… • ……8 Relax and Rewind…… { .7 What was first nothing more than a bright idea of the Student Council is now a fully-fledged group of 30 girls from years 7-12, who have all worked incredibly hard to provide our student readers with a hand-tailored way to express their opinions and ideas. And we’ve enjoyed every minute of it! The 1893 has provided us with a means of showcasing our talents and interests in writing, photography, design and communication with the school community. Here at the 1893 headquarters (known to many merely as ML3), we’ve been working to create a fun, creative and enjoyable way for every Walford girl to get the low-down on the was, the is and the will be of Walford. We invite you to take this opportunity to reflect on the term that was (head to pages 2 and 3 for Glee and Formal reports), and get excited for the days ahead (flick to the page 5 to suss out what the music department has in store for us all). So reader, we’ll let you take over now, and let you discover for yourself what lays ahead of us all. If you wish to be a part of the 1893 team, email one of our editors, you can find our details on the last page (but don’t forget to take it one page at a time). We hope you’ll be back for Issue 2 next term! The 1893 team xo MEET THE TEAM GLEE GET YOUR A Story to Tell ON! On Friday the 22nd of May, it was that time of year again: House Glee! After weeks of hard work and dedication from the girls, especially the house captains and choreographers, each house was ready to perform to the school. The theme 'So Fresh' allowed for diverse performances, making everyone excited for what was to unfold. With Fletcher kicking us off and Gordon finishing for the year, it is safe to say we all had major flashbacks to our primary school days and possibly sung along a little too much! Fletcher opened the 2015 House Glee with a mash-up of songs from So Fresh: 2009. Their performance was captivating and all-inclusive, demonstrating true house spirit. Notable in their performance was their dance to 'Please Don’t Stop The Music' and the decision to include a mashup of 'I Know You Want Me' with the music of 'I’m Not Alone.' Cleland were up next, singing songs from So Fresh: 2005. Cleland cleverly set the scene of their performance at a high school - choosing to represent Cheerleaders, Jocks and Rebels in their eye-catching uniforms, including vibrant green C’s. A highlight was ‘Hollaback Girl’ when the year 6’s and 7’s performed a cheerleading routine. Next, it was Murray’s turn to perform in a brilliant show of songs from So Fresh: 2008 finishing strongly with 'Candyman.' Murray presented in their usual style of year level performances following a skit from the house captains Eloise and Meara. Ms Hyde stole the show in her subtle appearance as a gangster in the year 12 performance to 'The Way I Are' and Madame Kelly made a great cameo. Prince Rayner performed penultimately, choosing a theme of cheerleaders and gangsters to support their outstanding performance of So Fresh: 2007. Zoe Hall took the stage replicating Kanye West in her rap of 'Stronger' contrary to the angelic voices of Eloise Hall and Izzy Marshall during their rendition of 'Bleeding Love'. Last, but certainly not least, was Gordon, with their memorable dances for So Fresh: 2006. They had our hips shaking during Shakira’s 'Hips Don’t Lie' and had us on the edge of our seats when Tatum Spencer-Duncliff flipped across the stage. The well-choreographed performance was clearly demonstrated during 'Maneater', strongly concluding House Glee 2015. After a controversial decision to only announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, Murray was announced as first place for the third year running, closely followed in second by Gordon, and then Cleland in third, though this doesn't detract from the fantastic performances by Fletcher and Prince Rayner. House Glee 2015 raised the bar higher than ever before and has us keen for next year. This festival saw students singing and playing their way though intricate pieces, competing against other students in Australia’s top schools. Despite the cold, 39 Walford girls managed to put on their game faces and play their pieces. One was a set piece played by every group in the division and the other was a chosen piece of the jazz genre. After performing, the girls attended a workshop about their instrument. The vocal students were especially privileged to attend had a workshop run by the famous vocal group Take 6, who have won ten Grammys and performed with Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and even Ray Charles. All students performed with enthusiasm, proudly representing the school in every division, and they should be very proud of themselves. Special congratulations to Amber Elsdon for being selected for the Division 4 Super Band! Article by Alexia Savvas On the 3rd of June, all the Walford choristers from years 4 to 12 came together for the annual Walford Choral concert. It was a spectacular display of talent and each girl should be applauded for her effort on the night. A definite highlight of the evening was the song ‘Africa’, which was performed by the combined choirs. The piece was truly a treat for the eyes and the ears. The girls all worked brilliantly together to imitate the sound of rain by the rubbing their hands, clicking their fingers, patting their legs and stomping to simulate the sound of roaring thunder. A special mention has to go to Mr Donhardt for the amazing lighting effects that really brought the ‘storm’ to life! Congratulations also must go to all the girls who soloed on the night or helped out with the orchestral/ percussion sections. Without you, the night wouldn’t have been the same. Thank you to all the teachers involved for giving up your time to help create such an enjoyable and memorable night. CRUNCH TIME IT’S Everyone knows that it’s crunch time at Walford; assignments are rolling in, tests seem like a daily activity and numerous concerts/co - curricular activities are coming up. Despite the craziness, it’s important that we don’t forget to look after ourselves and give ourselves appropriate breaks from work. Here’s an idea - start running! Winter running is fab because the cold air totally clears your head, you’re left feeling fresh, and it can even fight the symptoms of common colds! Running in between study sessions is beneficial in so many ways, or else running in the morning can be a great start to the day, increasing both productivity and metabolism rates.
