“SILVER BULLET SHOOTOUT” REGION 5 RALLY” DuQuoin State Fairgrounds DuQuoin, IL September 15 19, 2010 All you proud owners of those “Silver Bullet” wagons are invited to hitch up ole Nellie and mosey on down to a big shindig in DuQuoin, IL. Now if you’re scratching your head and asking where is DuQuoin, you’ll find it nestled between the Ohio and the Mississippi. I’ll bet you didn’t know we had a place named Garden of the Gods. It has lots of cliffs and trails where you can wander around ‘til your heart’s content. There’s also a place called Giant City Lodge where they have some of the best food around. Why, one time there was a stampede of bison and one came flying thru the wall - it’s still hanging there with two more they had to round up. You might go on down the road a piece where a fella has some bison corralled.. He’ll even let you watch him feed ‘em! Down in those same hills are some of the sweetest fixins’ for pie you’ve ever tasted and you can fill your jars with the best tasting grape juice this side of the old Mississip’. So you just bring your “Silver Bullet” and your best western duds right on down to friendly old DuQuoin and we’ll make sure you have your own special water fountain and lights just for your wagon. I hope we see you there because we’d be lost without you. ! One might say that the Du Quoin Illinois State Fairground is the area’s earliest and most successful reclamation and “green” project. In 1939 William R. Hayes bought the Old Black Gold Strip Mine that joined his original 30 acre fairground tract and set to work filling, leveling, and landscaping the acreage as well as planting 1400 trees. Today there are 1200 beautiful acres with 12 lakes and ponds (salvaged strip pits), and 30 miles of winding roadways, not to mention the showplace mansion and stables, the grandstand, and the mile oval track that yearly showcases the World Trotting Derby. During the first “State Fair” in 1923 there were no electric lights. The wooden grandstand held just 3,000 people. The oval race track was but a half mile around. But it was the first of many fairs to follow. And the first of many firsts for the fair. In 1924, under newly installed electric lights, the fair staged the first night horse show ever held. Another first took place in 929 when the fair hosted the first night stage show starring the Music Box Revue. Today the grandstand seats 18,000, the horse shows are a mainstay of the fair and the fair hosts stage performances from Las Vegas, Nashville and Broadway. Racing greats such as A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti have competed on the mile track. !
