Fall 5K
Welcomes Athletes of All Ages
For the runners, walkers and dog lovers
who participate in the Chamber’s Annual
Farragut Fall 5K, age is just a number.
Just ask last year’s youngest silver medal
placing male competitor. Only three years
old, he ran the entire 5K course with his
dad and was quoted by mom: “He has
already asked if he can run again next
year!”
Participants of all ages and skill levels
are encouraged to make plans to meet the
Chamber again—or for the first time—at
Mayor Bob Leonard Park on Watt Road on
Saturday, Oct. 8 for the 22nd Annual
Farragut Fall 5K, 1-Mile Fun Run & Pet
Parade.
Teams, including business groups or
family and friends, are welcome.
Registrations of four people only pay for
three (whether pre-registered or through
race day). Individual team members can
choose between the run or walk and still
receive the discount. This is a fun opportunity for team-building within businesses, for organization groups, or families. All
registrations include a long-sleeved shirt
and goody bag (while supplies last). Total
Race Solutions is administering the event,
which is USATF certified.
Pre-registration is available online at
https://runnerreg.us/farragutfall5k/. The
link will also be available through the
Chamber’s website www.farragutchamber.com. Participants can request a print-
ed race form from the Chamber via
HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]" [email protected]. Preregistration is just $20 per person through
Friday, Oct. 1. Participants 17 and under
can register for just $15! From Oct. 2
through race day, registrations increase to
$25/person or $20/17 and under.
The race and 1-mile walk both start at
Watt Road near Kingston Pike. Both runners/walkers travel up Watt Road with
runners continuing north to enjoy a scenic
asphalt course through Sedgefield subdivision; walkers/pets head into the park
where both groups finish. Watt Road closes from 7:30 a.m. until the last runner
enters the park. Door prizes will be award
while results are compiled, with cash
awards for the top overall male and
female runners and age-group medals to
follow.
A percentage of registrations benefits
local non-profit Smoky Mountain Service
Dogs (SMSD). SMSD trains dogs as highlyskilled mobility assistance animals for
area wounded veterans who have suffered
limb loss or traumatic brain injury and
provides approved applicants with a dog
and training at no cost to the veteran.
For those who wish to volunteers, help
is needed at registration, on the 5k course
(pointers), and cheering at the finish line.
Service hours are available for students
(course pointers must be 18+). Please

a 30-minute networking period with

The Nominating Committee has been very busy
preparing a slate to replace open positions on the
Board of Directors. They were very pleased with the
response from those willing to serve on the Board of
Directors.
The committee is very pleased to present Jonathan
Dzermejko - TDS Telecom, Samantha Lane - King
University and Michael Prescott - Smith & Hammaker
for two year terms and Richard Qulia -Richard F. Qulia
Polygraph & Investigations for a one-year term. They
also present current Board members for Executive

Chair and Terry Rutherford - Regions Bank as
Treasurer.
If no petition of additional persons is presented,
these individuals will be approved for Board positions.
If a petition is filed, according to the Chamber By-Laws,
a petition requires ten (10) signatures of active members in good standing. Any petition must be filed with
the Chamber office within ten (10) days of this notice.
Therefore, all petitions must be mailed or delivered
and received by the Chamber office no later than
August 20.
If no petitions have been filed within the 10 day period the nominations will be closed and the nominated
slate of candidates shall be declared elected by the
Board of Directors. If a petition is filed, the Chamber
membership will receive an election ballot by mail.

spans an entire continent. We’re traveling by train. Out our windows, we
drink in the passing scenes of cars on
nearby highways, of children waving at
crossings, of cattle grazing in distant

plants, of row upon row upon row of

and valleys, of city skylines and village

motto, especially when coupled with
Psalm 118:24, “This is the day which
the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and
be glad in it.” It is not the burdens of
today that drive men mad. It is the
regrets over yesterday and the fear of
tomorrow. Regret and fear are the twin
thieves who rob us of today.
So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more
mountains, swim more rivers, go barefoot more often, eat more ice cream,
watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry
less. Life must be lived as we go along.

Who’s who…
First Tennessee
Ask Angela Harvey what makes her look
forward to going to work each day at either
of the Farragut branches she may be headed
to, and her answer is simple: people. “What I
enjoy most are the wonderful customer relationships I’ve made over the years; many
have turned into great friendships,” she
explains. What’s more, Harvey enjoys learning from those customers and relationships,
saying, “After 23 years, there is always something new to learn and someone new to meet
who I and First Tennessee can impact in a
positive way.”
Positive impacts are exactly what First
Tennessee is about, especially in Tennessee
where they have been headquartered for 151
years. As Vice President and Financial
Center Manager for both the Campbell
Station and Kingston Pike branches of First
Tennessee in Farragut, Harvey wants anyone
who walks into a branch to have the best
experience possible that is tailored to that
individual. “Once they leave, I hope every
customer says, ‘Wow, First Tennessee really
cares about me and my situation. I am NOT
just a number and this is no ordinary bank!”
she says.
First Tennessee’s contributions to the
community are far from “ordinary”. In addition to supporting the Chamber as an
Admiral Enterprise Club member, giving
above and beyond their annual membership
investment, they give $5 million annually to
non-profits across their market area via the
First Tennessee Foundation. This year, their
new Community Development Fund will
award up to $3 million annually to non-profits that serve low-to-moderate income individuals and neighborhoods. What’s more, the
bank wants to empower customers who need
support through their Operation Hope partnership, a connection that Harvey is especially proud of, explaining “The new Hope
Inside offices will feature a dedicated certified counselor in area financial centers who
will provide a selected range of financial
empowerment programs--all free of charge.”
First Tennessee also likes to inject some
fun into their services while spreading the
message of a positive impact through great
customer service. During August, from the
1st-21st, small business owners can nominate themselves for the “Tennessee’s Best
Small Business” contest, with the potential
to win up to the $10,000 grand prize.

disadvantaged? - August 24, 9:00am to 10:30
am; No Fee
Learn why your woman-owned small business
may be eligible for federal funds. If you are a
woman owned small business and fall in one of
the designated industries, you can position your
company to bid on federal government set
asides for WOSBs and economically disadvantaged women-owned small businesses
(EDWOSBs). This workshop reviews the eligibility criteria, views a listing of the designated
industries, and engages the www.fbo.gov web
site to find WOSB/EDWOSB opportunities. Visit
