Epi-Center for Coffee by: Colene Martin Considering the current economic conditions in the Country it is exciting to see one area of business that continues to show trends of success in our local area. The Coffee Industry, in all forms from roasting, packaging, brewing, and drive–thru stands, is still flourishing in Josephine County. Rick and Paula Terwilliger bought Rogue Coffee Roasters in 2008 when it was located on Rogue River Highway. In less than a year they moved the business downtown to G Street, their son Jeremy joined their team and is now a co-owner. Rogue Coffee Roasters was chosen by a select panel of industry leaders and professionals as the Grand Champions of coffee in Oregon for 2013. They won the State Title as “Best Coffee in Oregon” at the Oregon State Fair in September. Jeremy Terwilliger says this win is a direct reflection of the love, passion and care that Rogue Coffee Roaster’s invests in their products. January 2014 Dutch Bros was founded in 1992 by then Dairy Farmers Dane and Travis Boersma. It is now the largest privately held drive-thru coffee company with nearly 200 locations in seven states. The company has their own special model for their coffee stands. Their mantra is fun music and smiling happy workers. It has certainly proven to work. The Human Bean opened its first location in Ashland in 1998, and they started franchising in 2002. Dave and Doneta Thomason acquired the three Grants Pass Human Bean locations in 2013, previously operated by the company. They are adding the drive-thru coffee stops to their lengthy portfolio of businesses in the Grants Pass area. Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce 2 Greeter of the Month December 2013 Greeter of the Month is: Donna Clements Mary Kay Cosmetics What an honor! To be chosen “Greeter of the Month” for simply doing something I love to do! My Wednesdays don’t feel right unless I’ve joined my fellow Chamber members to say hello, share what’s happening in my business &/or life, and network with them. My week wouldn’t be the same if I couldn’t refer one of my clients to another Chamber member for a service she needs. That’s what our networking meetings are all about, getting to know each other well enough that we feel comfortable saying, “Oh you need that!?! Let me tell you what I know about. I’m sure they can do the job for you!” Jennifer Reames - US Bank | Donna Clements - Mary Kay By joining the Chamber shortly after moving to Grants Pass, & going Dave Kelly - Kelly’s Automotive to the meetings, I learned about the community businesses & non-profits, and found my volunteer niche, helping at the front desk of the Women’s Crisis Support Team. Referrals from Chamber members also made it possible to “put Grants Pass on the map” for the Mary Kay 2013 Makeover Contest! We had a finalist—1 of 250—out of the over 22,000 entries! We’ll do better in 2014! We intend to bring the monetary prize home to Grants Pass. All those faces were due in large part to Greeters! Just as working for the community is a joint effort by all Chamber members, by sharing our skills and expertise with each other, being able to refer a client to another member is also a joint effort. It’s not just the climate, it’s the business climate. Special thanks to these individuals who are dedicated to promoting and networking their business every week. What’s the best way to clean my ears? A. Great question! What many people don’t realize is that cleaning your ears is often unnecessary, and can even be harmful—for two reasons. First, cerumen, or ear wax, creates a natural barrier to protect your ears from outside contaminants. Because ear wax is slightly acidic, it does a great job of keeping bacteria and fungus at bay. Without a healthy amount of ear wax, the ear canal can become susceptible to infections. Second, “cleaning” your ears with foreign objects, such as cotton swabs, actually pushes the ear wax further down the canal, gradually causing the wax to become impacted. This can lead to hearing loss, ear pain, and in rare cases, dizziness or vertigo. My rule of thumb is, “Don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!” Of course, if wax escapes the ear canal and turns dark yellow or orange, it can become unsightly. When that happens, you can gently wipe the external “bowl” of the ear with a wash rag or tissue. For most people, that’s all the cleaning required. However, some people have problems with ear wax buildup and may need further treatment. I recommend a few homeopathic remedies—none of which involve sticking a foreign object in your ear! • Contrary to popular belief, water softens wax. Simply allow water to dribble in and out of your ear while showering. • Using an eye dropper, place a few small drops of extra virgin olive oil in your ear canal to loosen the wax. You could also try baby oil, mineral oil, or glycerin. • After treatment, you can dry your outer ear with a towel or a hair dryer held at arm’s length. If these remedies don’t relieve excessive build-up, see an ear, nose, and throat specialist for help. We can perform a safe and effective earcleaning procedure using a microscope and gentle tools. Dr. Richard Huffaker is an ear, nose, throat specialist with Asante Physician Partners, providing care for children and adults. He can be reached at (541) 476-7775. Asante Physician Partners 1600 NW 6th Street, South Suite Grants Pass, Oregon 97526 • Mix a solution of half water, half hydrogen peroxide, and place a few drops in your ear canal. The wax will soften and eventually work its way out. 14ENTG002_GPCHAMBER 13 The Real Role of Leadership is Climate Control Hiroshi Mikitani, CEO, Rakuten Inc. The industry is part of the “traded sector”, bringing wealth from outside markets into our area. Manufacturing is global and does not depend on the size of the local market like retail trade. Manufacturing employees enjoy, on average, some of the highest wages and best benefit packages. The good news is local manufacturing jobs increased by 10.6 percent since November 2009, while total employment increased only by 1.1 percent during the same period. While linked by Steiner’s educational philosophy, each Waldorf school is autonomous and independently run. Waldorf education strengthens the child to meet not only the challenges of school but also of life. To face their futures with confidence, students need to develop a capacity for clear thinking, emotional stability, intellectual flexibility, and moral values. Our objective is to help all students to blossom into young adulthood with a balanced capacity for thinking, feeling and doing, so that they are prepared with self-confidence and inner resources to accept responsibility and to take their places as creative, self-directed members of society.
