Beautiful weather and an outstanding quality of life
often draw business owners to Josephine County,

An array of events take over the streets of Grants
Pass each year, drawing thousands of people from
around the region. From the Boatnik festival, Art
Along the Rogue and Back to the Fifties events, to
wine strolls and an annual antique fair, there’s

6. PROXIMITY TO OUTDOOR RECREATION. Southern
Oregon has everything an outdoor enthusiast would
want, from hiking and biking amongst nature’s
beauty on countless rugged trails, to white-water
rafting and fishing on the legendary Rogue River.

fishing trips on the nationally renowned Rogue
River as well as the natural beauty of our region.
If that wasn’t enough, weekly concerts take over
Riverside Park in the summer, and horse racing at
the Josephine County Fairgrounds always draws a

1. STRATEGIC LOCATION. Grants Pass is nestled
between one international and two local airports,
and directly off Interstate 5, providing easy
transportation for goods. The county is a perfect hub

timber production, the Rogue Valley has diversified
as tourism has expanded and become a primary
industry. Local mining for gold, gravel, gems and

It’s all good and it’s what people do for fun in Grants
Pass when the sun bears down in the summer.
The Rogue River offers a multitude of water activities for
the hard-core and soft-core tastes, much of it near main
roads.
It has lots of fun, intermediate whitewater between Lost
Creek Reservoir and Grave Creek, then more demanding
rapids in the famed Wild Section, which requires a permit
below Grave Creek.
The most-used section is downstream of Grants Pass,
between the Applegate River and Grave Creek, the
Bureau of Land Management’s Recreational section. Here
fishermen, floaters and Hellgate Excursions jetboats often
share the water. This section alone draws more than
700,000 visitors a year, including all vehicle and river
traffic.
Merlin is the center of summer fun. Those who need to
rent rafts or inflatable kayaks may do so at Rogue
Wilderness and Orange Torpedo, both on Merlin-Galice
Road.
Galice Resort, about 10 miles downriver, is another food-

equipment-entertainment hotbed for rafters, with a
historic building and large deck.

Hog Creek
The Oregon State Marine Board requires all children
ages 12 and under to wear life jackets at all times while
floating the river.
In addition, each raft, kayak or any other floating craft
must have a life jacket on board for each adult. As of
2010, when rafting Class 3 rapids or higher the life jacket
must be worn at all times by adults.
Rafters are strongly urged to wear life jackets at all times
while floating the Rogue River, to avoid being one of the
Rogue’s annual drowning victims, the vast majority of
whom didn’t wear the life jacket.
To keep things simple, adult rafters should consider
taking the life jacket off only in dead slow areas, to be
safe.
The $10 Wild Section permit is required between
May 15 and Oct. 15. Call the Smullin Visitor Center at

There’s plenty of water to wet a
fishing line in and around Grants
Pass and Josephine County, at all
times of the year.
The Rogue River’s steelhead
and salmon can be caught yearround somewhere between Gold
Beach and Lost Creek Reservoir,
depending on the timing and
conditions.
The lower Rogue is best known
for the famed “half-pounder”
steelhead unique to the region,
that run from 12 to 18 inches and
enter the river a year earlier than
most adult steelhead. The halfpounder fishing peaks in summer
and fall, when river flows are at
their lowest and clearest, and flies
may be used.
Summer fun!
By mid-spring, the chinook are
occasionally biting around Grants
Pass, and in early summer the
attention shifts to Shady Cove and
above. Summer steelhead can be
had from June through October,
and September and October
provides a nice overlap of fall
chinook, which bring boats to Gold
Beach in August.
If the rains come, the slowest
months tend to be November and
December.
The Applegate and Illinois rivers also
provide winter steelhead angling.
Open year-round, Lake Selmac
sports good-sized largemouth
bass, with a limit of one per day as
a trophy lake.
Smallmouth bass, largemouth
bass, and trout dominate the catch
at Applegate Reservoir, 45 miles
south of Grants Pass. The Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife
has also dumped excess hatchery
steelhead in the lake at times.
Speed is limited to no-wake, or
putt-putt trolling.

Soak up the scenery
Hikers and cyclists of all abilities will find
many options for enjoying the stunning
scenery of Southern Oregon.
The City of Grants Pass provides detailed
trail information at visitgrantspass.org.
Here are a few easy favorites:
Limpy Creek Trail is a one-mile loop trail
with a waterfall and creek crossing. It
features beautiful foliage, and there are
benches along the trail. To get there, take
Redwood Highway southwest from
Grants Pass to Riverbanks Road and take
that to Limpy Creek Road. Follow Limpy
Creek Road for about three miles to the
trailhead.
Cathedral Hills is located south of Grants
Pass. Take Williams Highway to South
Espey Road and turn left. The trailhead is
at the end of the road. There are multiple
trail systems for hiking, mountain biking
and horseback riding. While some of the
trails are challenging, the Backside Loop
trail is only one mile with a couple of
grade changes.
Waters Creek Trail offers two options. The
easier one is a loop that is about a mile
long. It can accommodate wheelchairs
and has benches. Branching off that trail
is a three-mile loop that is fraught with
poison oak, so be forewarned. Get there
by taking the Redwood Highway south
from Grants Pass for about 14 miles. Turn
right onto Waters Creek Road. The road
shrinks down to one lane of gravel. The
trailhead is on the right side of the road
and a parking area is on the left.
Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Wayside Trail
is unique because growing beside the
trail are Darlingtonia, a rare carnivorous
plant. The short wayside trail is also
wheelchair accessible. It’s located about
three miles south of Selma. Turn right on
Eight Dollar Mountain Road and travel
almost a mile to the wayside.

Burned Timber Interpretive Trail is a loop that
is about two miles long with gentle
slopes. It’s a good family hike, but there
also is the danger of poison oak. The big
leaf and vine maple provide a spectacular
show of color in the fall. From Grants
Pass, take Interstate 5 north to the Merlin
exit at mile marker 61. Follow the MerlinGalice Road, and then turn left on
Primary Forest Route 25. Then, turn
left on road 2500-35 across a concrete
bridge just past the five mile marker.
From there, it’s less than a mile to
the parking area and trailhead.

Let’s talk about the weather...
Although you wouldn’t know it from last summer’s
heat wave, the climate’s pretty good in Grants Pass.
It says so on the arched sign over Sixth Street, which
went up in 1920. The original sign stayed until 1941,
when it moved to Riverside Park, before coming down
in 1958 because of construction of the Seventh Street
Bridge. The current sign was erected on the original
spot on Sixth Street in 1977.
In the summer of 2014, city officials may have
considered removing it once again when the mercury
soared into triple digits a record 23 times, including 15
times in July when the average high temperature was
over 98 degrees. It was the hottest summer on record in
Grants Pass.
But over time, the climate in Grants Pass falls into a
happy medium between Eugene and Redding.
Eugene’s too wet, Redding’s too hot, but Grants Pass
is just right.

Grants Pass gets about 196 days of sunshine a year,
with an annual rainfall of 31.8 inches.
The average high temperature in July, the hottest
month, is right around 91 degrees.

As the story goes, one day in
1874 a young man named Elijah
Davidson was hunting in the
Siskiyou Mountains southeast of
Grants Pass when his dog
chased a bear into a hole in the
hillside.
the interpretive center — you
can’t miss it.
That was the discovery of what
today is known as Oregon Caves
National Monument, and you too
can do just what Davidson did
140 years ago — take a peek
inside, only with much better
lighting, better footing and a
tour guide.

Entry to the monument is free,
and there are a number of hiking
trails in the area. Visitors can
stay at the historic Chateau
lodge, which has 23 rooms.
Camping in the area is also
available.
The real attraction, of course, is
the caves. Guides lead visitors
on a moderately strenuous
ascent 200 feet into the hillside,
through narrow shafts and into
immense,
awe-inspiring
chambers that were once made
of limestone but have been
transformed into marble over
thousands of years by the steady
drip-drip of acidic rainwater.
The season runs from midMarch through Nov. 1. Guided
tours are available from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. March 21 through May
22; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 23
through Sept. 7; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The center is open Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, May 1
through September. Hours are
10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Sept. 8 to Oct. 12; and then from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Nov. 1.
Tours are $10 for those 17 and
older; $7 for those 16 and
younger. Cash is recommended, as
the park sometimes has difficulties
with its credit card system. The
minimum height required to
participate in the tour is 42 inches.
The 90-minute tour includes
500 stairs stretched out over the
course of half a mile. The total
elevation gain is 230 feet.
Reservations are required for
two other types of tours: off-trail
tours through the caves and
those done by candlelight. Call

APPLEGATE TRAIL INTERPRETIVE
CENTER MUSEUM. Visitors can
learn about the Applegate Trail
and the people who used it to
journey west to Oregon.
The museum is located just off
Interstate 5 at exit 71, 14 miles
north of Grants Pass. Built in
1920, the Grave Creek Covered
Bridge is just up the road from
GOLDEN GHOST TOWN. Located
several miles east of Wolf Creek
along Coyote Creek Road,
this former mining settlement
features an abandoned church,
a store and other buildings,
perched above the valley where
miners once toiled.
At its peak, the 19th century
mining town of Golden was
home to 100 people and served
as a hub for many others
who worked the land in more
remote locations. The town was
distinguished by its lack of
saloons in the town center, its
two active churches and the
large orchard established by its
founding families.
Today, the site is owned by the
state and is listed on the
National Register of Historic
Places. Visitors can explore the
remaining settlements at the 5acre Golden State Heritage Site,
which features an interpretive
display. There is no fee to visit,
and there are no restrooms.

GREAT CATS WORLD PARK. Lions,
tigers and leopards are among 18
species of great cats greeting
visitors at this 10-acre park at
27919 Redwood Highway, about
a mile south of Cave Junction.
The park is open daily from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day
weekend through Labor Day;
check the website for off-season
hours. The park is home to about
45 cats, which range in size from
a 6-pound African wildcat to a
500-pound white tiger. Tours are
about 90 minutes. Admission is
$14 for adults, $12 for those 65
and older, $10 for ages 4 to 12.
Children 3 and under are free.

HELLGATE JETBOAT EXCURSIONS.
Some 85,000 passengers a year
enjoy an exhilarating trip down
the scenic Rogue River on
Hellgate’s wide-beamed jetboats,
which make multiple runs daily
May through September from
the Caveman Bridge in Grants
Pass.
Hellgate Jetboat Excursions,
966 S.W. Sixth St., offers a range
of tours lasting from two to five
hours. Brunch, lunch or dinner is
included in some tours. Prices
range from $41 to $69, with
discounts for children 11 and
under. Group rates are available.
Reservations are recommended,
as some trips sell out in advance.
KERBYVILLE MUSEUM. Housed in
an 1870s-era building, displays
showcase the area’s pioneer
history, including early gold
mining and logging. Artifacts
include prehistoric and Native
American items. Kerbyville was
the Josephine County seat from
1857 to 1886.
The museum, located at 24195
Redwood Highway in Kerby, is
open Monday through Saturday
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and
Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.
Admission is $5 for adults, $4
seniors, $3 veterans, $2 for
children 6 to 16, and children
under six are free. A flat family
rate of $10 is offered.

POTTSVILLE. On 80 acres, this
small “community” once owned
by late political leader Eugene
Debbs Potts is home to old cars,
logging and mining equipment,
historic documents and old
buildings. Outdoor exhibits are
open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
Tours of the museum and
“pioneer town” are available by
appointment. Pottsville is home
to the annual Father’s Day
Antique Tractor and Engine
Show, which includes historic
craft demonstrations and a large
flea market. The Pottsville Pow
Wow will also be held there on
Sept. 6 and 7.
SCHMIDT HOUSE MUSEUM. A brick
house at 508 S.W. Fifth Street is
one of the older homes in Grants
Pass, built in 1900 by grocer
Claus Schmidt. A museum since
1983, the house contains
original furniture, family photos,
clothing and other historical
items. Tours are given Tuesdays
through Fridays from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. Admission is $10 for the
first person, $5 for each
additional person in the group.
Members receive a 10 percent
discount. The society’s research
library is located next door.

WILDLIFE IMAGES. See bears,
bald eagles, wolves and other
local wildlife on a 90-minute
guided walking tour of this local
animal rehabilitation center,
located at 11845 Lower River
Road, 12 miles west of Grants
Pass.
The nonprofit facility cares for
sick, injured, and orphaned
wildlife indigenous to the
Pacific Northwest, while giving
the public an opportunity to
experience wildlife first-hand.
Visitors to Wildlife Images
should wear comfortable shoes
and clothing. Tour carts are
available for a fee for the elderly
or
those
with
physical
challenges. People may bring
bottled water on a tour, but no
other food or drink is permitted.
Summer hours are 9 a.m. to
5 p.m, with four tours offered
daily, May through August.
Three daily tours are offered
September
through
April.
Reservations
are
highly
recommended. Tours are $12 for
adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for
children ages 4 to 13. There is no
charge for children ages 3 and
younger. Arranged in advance,
group discounts are available.

Treat yourself to an event that will delight and excite your senses!
Art Along the Rogue has wowed crowds for 11 years now and
anticipates another year of impressive sights and sounds. This
event, held the first weekend of October, has become the
premiere street painting and music festival in the Northwest,
combining visual and performance art that is sure to please
spectators of all ages.
What will you see?
A variety of artists come out to line the
streets with their artwork based on each
year’s theme. There is a featured artist,
chosen for his or her widespread talent. A
local featured artist is also picked to come
display his or her creativity. Further,
several other street painters are selected
for a chance to contribute to the decor. A
more recent addition includes school
teams participating to earn money for
their school’s art programs. With just
chalk and ingenuity, these artists come
together to transform an asphalt road into
an eye-popping stream of pictures.
What will you hear?
Bands are lined up back to back to keep
the music rolling. Each brings their own
style of sound to the stage. In the past,
we’ve seen guitars, banjos, didgeridoos,
even bagpipes! There is space to sit and
listen or to get up and dance!

Bounty of resources dedicated to
helping businesses grow and thrive

A California couple brought both of
their small businesses to Grants Pass
five years ago and have used some of
the many local resources to help them
continue to grow.
“One of the first things we did was join
the Chamber of Commerce and having
that networking opportunity was
huge,” said Jason VanDusen, who
owns a graphic design business while
his wife, Bonnie, runs a residential and
commercial cleaning and organization
company.
Both took small business management
classes at the Rogue Community
College Small Business Development
Center. Those classes walked them
through human resources, marketing,
employee management and payroll.
“It taught us the ins and outs of
business,” VanDusen said.
He added that the friendliness of the

As a local advocate, Martin
participates in legislative issues that
affect small businesses, with a focus on
those in Southern Oregon. She works

Martin says having all of these local
business resources has positively
impacted downtown Grants Pass
businesses as well as many other
around the county.
“We are really fortunate to have a
downtown that’s really vibrant,”
Martin said.

parks and plenty of open space for
small businesses.

state lottery funds earmarked for
economic development and assisting
entrepreneurs start or expand a
business in Josephine County.
“I just kind of smooth the
way,” Abbott said. “I may be
able to eliminate possible
roadblocks so they aren’t
stumbling to find resources,
whether it’s funding or
building.”
“We have resources for small start-up
(businesses) in terms of land use,”
explained County Commissioner
Cherryl Walker. “Josephine County
is very interested in attracting small
business.”

The Rogue Community College Small
Business Development Center has
been helping Southern Oregon
businesses grow and succeed for more
than 30 years.
The county offers a growing tourism
industry, public transit system, two
local general aviation airports, and 18
parks, most of which have access to the
Rogue River.

both startups and established
businesses.

include
free, confidential one-on-one
counseling, low-cost business
training opportunities,
and
information
resources to help start,
grow, or improve a

SOREDI. Southern Oregon Regional
Economic Development, Inc. provides
resources to traded-sector businesses
in Josephine and Jackson counties.
Those businesses manufacture goods
locally and sell the products to people
primarily outside the market area.
