“A Methodist Rejoices in God”
(Mark #3 from “Five Marks of a Methodist”)
“Don’t be sad because the joy from the Lord is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8: 10
In this month of Advent you will probably hear the word “rejoice” many
times. You may hear it at church and in songs on the radio, or see it on signs.
As we consider mark #3, rejoicing in God, we are challenged by this question:
What role does joy play in following Christ? Based on John Wesley’s
sermons, author Steve Harper observes: “Discipleship is a whole-life
response to grace … Joy is the word used by Christians in every age to describe the
comprehensive response we make out of our whole being to God’s love.” So, joy
follows and comes from love. For Christians (disciples) it comes from deep within –
from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Wesley takes this thought even deeper by
identifying the basis for our joy coming “from the process where we are reconciled with
God” and thus gain a warming realization that our sins are forgiven and that Jesus’
death on a cross is the objective proof of God’s love.
From an understanding of forgiveness to His amazing love, we can live for Him,
and from that relationship comes joy. That joy produces peace, patience and what
Wesley calls a “living hope.”
Have you entered into that heart-to-heart, life-to-life relationship with Him? If
so, we can move into each day of our lives “with God’s joy”! A disciple rejoices in God.
As Charles Wesley wrote: “Rejoice the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore; mortals,
give thanks and sing, and triumph ever more. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
rejoice, again I say, rejoice!”
Speak or sing these words at Christmas as we celebrate the birth of the One who
came to save us! Now there’s something to rejoice about!
Joyful Christmas People of God!! Pastor Doug
Driftwood Devotion
“We must pay more careful attention,
therefore, to what we have heard,
so that we do not drift away.”
Hebrews 2: 1 (NIV)
It’s been the topic
of conversation on the
dock at Lakeside since
September.
A very
powerful storm roared in
from the northeast with
waves that pounded the
pier and flew from one
side to the other. In the
midst of the storm, the
power of the angry waves
was clearly demonstrated
as a piece of driftwood, a
huge tree trunk, was
thrown on to the dock
slamming into some of
the iron posts. But now
the storm is over and
there it sits, a silent
reminder of those stormy
days and the unbridled
power of wind and waves. And yet, could it
be more than just a gigantic piece of
driftwood? Could it be a metaphor for the
lives of some of those who come to visit
Lakeside? Surely there are times when our
lives seem to be drifting with an uncertainty
of what our future may be. Sometimes that
happens when people change jobs, retire
from a long career, move to a new place or
community, graduate from school, go
through the stages and seasons of life, and
perhaps even drift away from God. But
sometimes life feels more like being in a
storm. There are storms of grief even when
a loved one dies or a divorce is finalized.
Storms of the soul and heart when
relationships are broken. Storms of panic
and worry over finances or retirement
plans, or test results and difficult diagnoses.
Whether we feel we are drifting without a
certain direction or purpose, or in the midst
of a storm, it’s our natural tendency to go
to a place of peace, safety and quiet
reassurance. For many, that’s Lakeside.
Maybe you’ve seen some of them quietly
sitting on the benches staring out at the
lake or in quiet conversation
on the dock or in Hoover
worship or evening vespers or
even eating ice cream. They
continue to come, and like the
log on the dock, we don’t
always know where they’ve
come from or what they’ve
been through, but somehow
at Lakeside they find peace
and calmness for the storms of
life. And perhaps like the log
on the dock that instead of
just being a tree has become a
place for people to sit, people
find a new sense of purpose
and direction that replaces
their anxiousness of feeling
adrift in life.
Just how does that
really happen? I mean, what is it about
Lakeside that helps people find themselves
again? Well, the arts, education and
recreation activities work together like a
great orchestra to inspire and feed the
body, mind and soul. But it’s the religious
life activities that speak to the spirit and
remind our visitors that whether they are
drifting or coming in from the storm, there
is a God who loves them and a Savior who
can whisper to them in those quiet
moments on the lakeshore: “I know, I
understand, I care, and I am with you.”
So, just a big piece of driftwood on
the dock? Take a closer and deeper look! It
could represent so much more.

“Into this silent night
As we make our weary way
We know not where,
Just when the night becomes its darkest
And we cannot see our path,
Just then
Is when the angels rush in,
Their hands full of stars.”

ADVENT DEVOTIONAL
STEPHEN MINISTRY
"Joy to the world, the Lord is come!"
These words are part of one of the most
familiar and cherished carols of the season.
But for some, the joy of the season is but a
distant dream.
Brightly wrapped packages, Christmas trees,
holiday parties, holly and the scent of pine,
unending upbeat carols in shops and malls,
visits from friends and family, baking and
cooking, food everywhere--and the awed,
hushed joy of welcoming a tiny Infant to our
world and our hearts--these are the images
and memories of Christmas most of us
celebrate and treasure.
But each year some people approach the
holiday season with a much less joyous song
in their heart. The expectation to have a
“perfect” holiday can bring unwanted extra
guests of stress and anxiety. There is little
excitement or heart for the cheer and the
bustle, the anticipation and the joy the
season can bring.
Stephen Ministers are trained to help those
who face difficult times during the holidays.
Trained in the art of Christian Caregiving,
Stephen Ministers walk with those who may
be facing difficult times in their lives.
Interested in talking with a Stephen
Minister? Call Pastor Doug or Sue Mitchell,
and together we can arrange for a Stephen
Minister to walk with you.
Our 2015 Advent
Devotional
is
now
available. Please pick one
up at church and feel free
to take one to a friend or
neighbor.
Thank you to all of
the authors who volunteered to support
this ministry.
It is a wonderful
collaborative effort between Columbus
Ave. and Trinity UMCs. Thank you to
Sue Mitchell and Jill Oberer for
proofing, printing and assembling.
May reading this devotional
prepare your heart to receive the gift of
His Son, Wonderful, Counselor, Prince
of Peace.

Dear Praying Friends,
Words cannot express how
grateful we are for your continued
prayers. Several times during the past
few months we paused and said that
was an answered prayer. Though we
know we are facing many difficult
times ahead, we know with your
continued prayers and God’s grace,
we will make it through.
The Kares Family
Dear Friends,
