The Women’s Initiative is devoted to supporting adolescent girls (grades 6 through 8) through public education, advocacy, volunteer mobilization, and funding to help them develop core values that will protect them from negative influences and support their success as adults. Through Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow (GTLT), United Way supports community and school-based activities that focus on the future success of adolescent girls building self-esteem, helping them maintain healthy relationships with their peers, and developing their leadership skills. The discussion not only enlightened us about how GTLT is changing the lives of at risk girls but touched on other activities in the local area meeting similar needs. Ms Zelko also told us about future hopes and plans for GTLT and about the plans of the United Way’s Women’s Initiative to more involve working women in volunteer activities and in helping each other by Living United.
