walls: That is what greeted Matt
Westenhaver of Westenhaver
Construction when he was called upon
to remodel the main floor of Columbia,
MO, residents’ second home condo in
Regatta Bay on Horseshoe Bend. The
first concern, according to Matt, was
to be able to return each piece to its
proper place, carefully arranged by the
owner, after the project was completed.
To that end, Matt created a chart of
the wall space in each room, numbered
each piece of art, and then began the
art of remodeling.
It only took three months last
spring to convert the condo from
mauve to a modern masterpiece. Now,
from the front door, a maple staircase
with stainless steel back plates and a
carpet runner, added to give traction
to the owners’ delighted dogs, takes
visitors down to a lakeside fantasy of
art and artifacts.

Throughout the main floor all
millwork and doors were provided by
High Brothers Lumber. In the entry
a built in, lighted bookshelf houses
treasures from the owners’ travels.
Double doors lead to a large guest
bedroom with en suite bath. Just past
these, the kitchen, dining area, and
living room share an open space, the
highlight of which is a striking fireplace
standing free in their midst. Designed
by Nick Detert of Putnam’s Studio
1012 Interiors and constructed by
Dimensions in Wood of Columbia,
MO, the surround is made of maple
with inlaid strips of stainless steel and
situated on a granite base.

living, dining, and bedroom areas;

stainless steel covers the kitchen and
bathrooms. In the conversation and
TV area a large fabric rug is inlaid with
occasional small pieces of wood. Two
very old, large theater lights rest in one
corner. More of the owners’ collections
of memorabilia fascinate guests on
open shelving.

offered their customers in-store coffee,
the original campus bookstore at
Mizzou had a “Coffee Shop.” Its sign
now hangs over the break front in the

The dining table overlooks the deck and
the magnificent lake view.
Adjacent to the dining room, a
granite topped breakfast bar faces
the kitchen. Lighted cabinets, also
by Dimensions in Wood, are made
of glass, stainless steel, and maple.
Many kitchen drawers are faced with
stainless steel to perfectly coordinate
with the stainless apron sink, the
hardware, as well as the woven
stainless steel back splash and the
speckled tile floor. All appliances
are state of the art, including the
Advantium microwave - used to cook
just about everything. Even the full
sized laundry room amuses the owners
and guests with its works of art.
Just off the living area the huge
master bedroom opens to the deck.
There is comfortable seating for
private TV viewing and a built in desk.
The bedroom is open to the bathroom
with a large Jacuzzi tub and raised
granite counter with double sinks.
A hidden medicine cabinet was built
directly into the drywall by Marsh
Paint and Drywall.

The condo’s lower level provides
access to the lake and community
dock. There are two guest bedrooms,
each with en suite bath, as well as an
additional half bath. Floors are
carpeted but a strip of tile is at the
base of the glass doors in each
bedroom to prevent carpet fading. The
bedrooms open to a comfortable living
room. Everywhere you look interesting
paintings, prints, and mementos cover
the walls and shelves.

While everything in the condo is
dog friendly, the animals most
noticeable throughout are the monkeys.
From the human-sized simian seated
in the lounge chair in the living room
to the huge, whimsical paintings on
the walls, monkeys are everywhere.
According to the owner, known
affectionately as the “Monkey Lady”
after beginning her collection in
1994, people act like monkeys and
monkeys make people laugh. With a
very traditional home in Columbia, it
was the owners’ intent to make their
lake escape very modern and a barrel
of fun. Clearly that goal has been met
and everyone involved in the project
deserves a round of applause.

started in 1987 by brothers Ed and
Dan Dunn in St. Paul, Minnesota who
were inspired by the “legendary” coffee
houses of Eugene, Oregon. Since
then, the franchise has expanded to
more than 80 locations in nine states
including a prime spot in Columbia’s
bustling Forum Shopping Center. The
baristas at Dunn Bros. craft-roast Fair
Trade, top-grade coffee beans each
day in front of their customers and take
pride in the careful preparation of each
beverage. Dunn Bros. is a great option
for those on the run as it has a drivethru for fast coffee consumption. Those

For nearly 20 years Lakota Coffee has

home in their “mountain lodge”
in Gravois Mills, MO. Their naturally
landscaped lot gently slopes to 220
feet of Mill Creek Cove water frontage.
A 3/4 acre second tier lot of grass and
trees enhances the private retreat.
General contractor Bruce Reike
began construction of the home in
2001 using the design team of three
architects in Kansas City. When the
Pottengers purchased the property
three years ago, a large second story
addition was created that is supported
by natural tree trunks. Stone and
cedar siding and a green tile roof
by Century Roofing complete the
exterior’s lodge look.

The Pottengers’ grandchildren
especially love the bunk bed room
which comfortably sleeps six in
wrap around bunks. It joins a second
bedroom via a “Jack and Jill” bathroom.
The third upper level bedroom could
be a master suite with its huge, private
attached bath.
A wrought iron railing, intricately
designed by Bill Ruckdeschel, leads
from the upstairs balcony down the
staircase to the home’s main living
level. Here the great room, dining
area, and kitchen are all open to share
the lake view from the entire wall of
windows by Andersen rising from the
floor to the beams of the second story
above. Likewise, a stone fireplace
created by Steve Ingala soars to the
rafters and is inlaid with wood. This
forms the background for the friendly
moose portrait smiling down at those
gathered below in comfortable leather
sofas surrounding the crackling fire.

Slate tile covers the kitchen and
dining area floors. Countertops of
granite, designed and installed by Top
Master, surround the kitchen. The back
wall is covered with Shamrock natural
maple cabinets, some with glass
doors. A walk-in pantry is immediately
to the left. Five natural wood stools
with upholstered seats provide casual
seating at the granite bar. The fabric
pattern is repeated in the natural wood
upholstered chairs around the dining
table. Linda’s collection of “north
woods” art and collectibles can be
found throughout making everyone feel
even more at home.
The master bedroom is on the main
floor, and also overlooks the lake. White
pine walls continue the lodge decor
theme. A huge walk-in shower in the
master bath is tiled in natural green
stone. The walk-in closet conveniently

Toni Reike did all interior
design work including selecting the
furnishings for the home. Both she
and her husband, Bruce, designed the
landscaping including a pond, shaded by
a delicate Japanese maple, flowing into
a waterfall to the Lake. A huge natural
stone fire pit was created in the large
side lot next to the house with plenty of
room for happy marshmallow roasters.
The addition to the upper level
created a covered patio below. The
indoor wrought iron railings are
repeated outside, protecting the patio
and the sea wall and bench along the
shore line.
Because the lane upon which they
live ends at their door, the Pottengers’
sense of the tranquility enjoyed by
those on “the quiet side” is even more
enhanced. They are always delighted to
return to their lodge on the Lake.
