November, 2013 - The Little Italy Lodge
November 2013 Issue President’s Message Dear Brother and Sisters: October was the month all about Italian-American! Every year the U.S. President signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian-American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is in recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent as well as Italians in America. Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making us the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci. So, we are in great company! In recognition of all the great ItalianAmericans who have gone before us, the Little Italy Lodge joined the Italian-American community in celebrating Columbus Day on Sunday October 6, 2013 with the great Parade. Our Columbus Day Float was designed through the great imagination of fellow lodge member, Krissy Bilotto. This is Krissy’s second year representing the Lodge with her hard work. Krissy, along with the assistance of fellow members, worked many hours to brining her creation to life. And what a wonderful representation this float was of the Little Italy Lodge. I am so thankful that our Lodge has loyal and hard working members willing to take the lead to make our Lodge flourish! Christopher Columbus opted to ride on the Little Italy Float! And I must say, our float was the best. Not to mention the Little Italy Lodge won 1st place! But you can be the judge! October was also a busy month for us with the Ways and Means Committee continuing to support our fellowship efforts, with Friday Night Dinners, Bingo, Crab Feast (end of September) and the Sock Hop. We continue to celebrate friendship and fraternity through these events. I encourage all members to join in these fellowship events by attending or offering your services to volunteer! The Fund has been providing scholarships to students of Italian heritage as they pursue their goal of obtaining an undergraduate college degree. (Note- since its inception in 2001, the Fund has awarded financial aid in the total amount of $104,000, in 2014, we will award an additional amount of $12,000). The initial benefit of a donation is that the Fund is an approved 501/3/c organization and the donation may be listed as a charitable donation on both your federal and state tax return if you itemize your deductions on your tax return. The secondary benefit centers around the fact that your donation will allow us to continue providing these scholarships in the future years. Any donation will be greatly appreciated by the Lodge's Scholarship committee as well as the students who receive these awards. If you would like to know more about this request, please contact Jerry Elliott at 410- 561-0199. If you care to make a donation, please make checks payable to the La Famiglia Scholarship Fund and mail to: Attn: Jerry Elliott Little Italy Lodge OSIA #2286 905 E. The Vice Presidents Corner ………Grazie per tutti i complimenti regarding my B.O.L.O.s. and Fig Pie recipe. Many of the membership have “Thank Me” for writing the V.P. Corner and being informative on my articles. Many articulated how delicious my Fig Pie was after using the recipe published in the La Notizia. Again “Thank You.” To continue with the Figs (until next season) here’s another recipe I use for a Fresh Fig Cake. Fresh Fig Cake 2 cups of figs mashed 2 cups of sugar ¾ cups of shortening 4 eggs 2 cups +2 teaspoons of flour 1 tsp of cinnamon 1 tsp of allspice 1 tsp of baking soda 1 cup of chopped pecans (you can also add raisins if you want). Mix together sugar, figs, shortening and eggs. Beat well and then add flour, cinnamon, allspice, baking soda and pecans. Pour into a well greased and floured Bundt cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Cool and placed a flat plate on top and turn the Bundt cake over. Enjoy! San Martino…Ogni Mosto Diventa Vino! November 11th is the feast of Saint Martin. This feast commemorates the day that grape juice becomes wine. Italians break open their wine barrels and taste the fruits of their labor. To compliment their new wine they gather together with friends and roast chestnuts. November Birthday List: Happy Birthday! In remembrance of all those who lost their lives a laurel wreath is placed at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Rome by the President. This monument is known as “Altare della Patria”.
