A dv a nc e d N e w s T r e nd 1 s t H a lf 2 0 1 3 MESSAGE Broward Center for the Performing Arts Publix # 1382 FROM THE PRESIDENT I want to thank everyone for their efforts and dedication in 2012, making Advanced the top roofing contractor in Florida. The management team has set strong and measurable goals for 2013, so we can perform even better than last year. 2012 was an average year in terms of revenue and profit but we still need to find more efficient ways of getting work done. I urge you to be wise in 2013 as the economy is supposed to slide into a recession in the 4th quarter and with the increase in government taxes and a new healthcare system, it will not get easier. Rob Kornahrens One area of improvement I am spending even more time on this year is everyone’s safety. I brought Rocky Zapata on board to instill a culture of behavior based safety. Safety will become more natural, like putting your seatbelt on when getting in the car. Everyone’s safety is our top priority! I want to see everyone go home to their family and friends at night injury free. In addition, one of the efficiencies we are working on is moving forward with our new office in Jupiter. The office will be managed by Ronny Taveras and focus on service calls, preventitive maintenance and small scope work in that area. The office will mean faster response times for our current customers, plus the ability to add new customers while reducing our gas and other travel expenses from the Fort Lauderdale office. My door is always open for new ideas and efficiencies so please stop by if you have an idea. MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT A Happy New Year to everyone, I hope 2013 finds you and your family well. Good news we have some very nice projects coming up in the 1 st quarter of 2013 and our backlog is strong. Be patient, a few contracts and permits have been moving through the system slower than we would like. I am optimistic all contracts will be secured by February. Winn Dixie Store #254 I have just started my term as President of the Palm Beach Roofers Association. I look forward to a great year giving back and keeping up industry standards with our peers. I just completed reading the book “A Competent Organization”. The main theme of the book was competent companies are always looking for a better way to perform their jobs. A better experience for their customers. ARI, I feel is ready doing a lot of things in the book. I’m always proud of our continuous improvement. alDanny Stokes, Corporate Vice President Keep the Faith! Advanced Roofing, Inc., where Experience Matters P age 2 A dv a nc e d N e w s T r e nd Happy New and Blessed 2013. This New Year brings exciting challenges for us as a team in the areas of safety and health. Poet “Ralph Waldo Emerson” stated that there is nothing that gives more direction to a person’s life than a big conjunction of principles. Safety is a conjunction of principles full of goals. Let’s make safety our primary principle, a principle which rules our safety behavior. As a team, let’s look out for one another, lets direct and teach one another. As a result, our end goal will be for all of us to go home safe and healthy to spend much needed quality time with our families. If we all place safety first as our principle, our goals will be reached. Back Injury Principles How can we prevent Back Injuries? 1st Principle –Improve posture = Exercises, behavior changes and conditioning programs will improve posture and increase overall health. nd 2 Principle – Stretch = Before work (take 5 minutes) and during work, workers should take a minute to straighten out their backs and loosen their shoulders. rd 3 Principle – Rested = Sleep on a firm good mattress; get a good night sleep. 4th Principle – Loads = Push loads rather than pull them. 5th Principle – Lifting = Prior to lifting loads, a worker should: Plan the lift and test the load before picking it up. Ask for help, if the load is heavy or awkward, the worker should get someone to assist. Make sure you have firm footing. Bend at the knees. Bending at the waist is one of the most common causes of back injury; “DO NOT BEND AT THE WAIST”. Lift with the legs. The muscles in the legs are the powerhouses of the body. They should be used instead of the weaker back muscles. Hold the load close to the body Keep the back upright and straight and avoid twisting and turning Lift smoothly and do not jerk the load If we practice these five simple principles when lifting loads, back injuries are capable of being prevented. Welcome to the start of 2013. For those who are new to the company, you may ask “What is the Steering Committee?” The Steering Committee is a group of team members from each department of the company that assist the Executive Committee in improving our company. We are here to listen and help try to resolve any issues/suggestions that employees may have. If you are not sure who your department representative is, here is a list of the members: David Baytosh & Ivelisse Perez – Roofing Trish Klein – Air Conditioning/Lightning Protection Jerry Ladner – Fleet/Warehouse/Trucking/Crane Camille Itri-Hixson – Service Debbie Giuliani – Business Development Jessica Kornahrens – Project Management Angelica Valderama – Accounting Rose Britian – Human Resources/Office Administration/ I.T. Jason Carruth – North Florida Offices Rocky Zapata - Safety We are always looking for ways to improve and would love to hear from you. Without employees like each of you, we would not have been in business for the past 30 years. 6. Under Archive file, click Browse and select to your U drive. Browse to find the file that you want, or enter the file name, then click OK. The destination file location appears in the Archive file box. We recommend that you keep your .pst file under 10GB. Please pay attention to the file size. The larger the file the higher the risk of corruption. 7. Select the Include items with “Do not AutoArchive” checked check box to include any items that might be individually marked to be excluded from automatic archiving. This option does not remove that exclusion from these items, but instead ignores the Do not AutoArchive check box for this archive only. 8. Click OK. Leave a note or message in the Suggestion Boxes, which are located in all of the departments, or come and speak to any of the members. Our doors are always open. We are also looking to begin the Sporting Events again soon. If anyone has any suggestions for activities that we could do, please let us know. The Steering Committee is now meeting every other month, with our next meeting scheduled on February 13th. So if you have a suggestion, issues, or a cost saving idea, let us know. We would love to hear from you! Warranty: 15 year NDL Why was Advanced chosen? Advanced Roofing was selected as the most qualified roofing contractor to re-roof the 225,000 ft2 rooftop in Weston because of its 30+ years of experience developing unique and challenging re-roofing projects in the southeastern United States. Additionally, Advanced Roofing’s experience, healthy balance sheet and commitment to quality allow it to provide bonding of $20 million for individual projects and up to $100 million in aggregate bonding. Savings: $100,000 rebate and $790,000 energy savings over warranty period Advanced maintains one of the highest safety standards in the industry. A fullsafety officer routinely visits and inspects the job site to ensure everything is beyond OSHA compliant. In addition, all of Advanced Roofing’s foremen and construction managers have received OSHA 30 hour certifications. A Unique Climate Requires Unique Construction Methods The Weston Business Center required a durable but easy to install roofing membrane to meet the timeframe and work schedule. The key challenges were weather, sensitive printing equipment, 24/7 operation requirements, energy efficiency, removal of 27 skylights, and staging. In the summer, South Florida experiences high intensity sun exposure, torrential rainfall and fierce winds, so a durable roofing system was needed that could be installed quickly. With the entire facility running around the clock and being air-conditioned, energy efficiency and staging was a significant challenge. Advanced was limited in the staging area of cranes, placing dumpsters, and other equipment. During the removal of the old roof, 37 skylights had to be removed and replaced with metal decking, all while minimizing dust and preventing disruptions to operations below. A dv a n c e d N e w s T r e n d P age 1 7 After a thorough analysis, Energy Star-rated Sika Sarnail 48-mil S327 membrane was chosen as the system of choice because of its ease of installation, durability to withstand constant abuse from the environment, and would increase the building’s energy efficiency. The Result The result is a new, high efficiency white roof that will provide greater energy efficiency throughout the building. Being a partner of Florida Power and Light (FPL), Advanced Roofing was able to offer the owner a $0.45/ft 2 rebate from FPL which added up to over $100,000 in rebates with a total energy savings of $790,000 over the 15-year warranty period. The roof is Miami-Dade approved to withstand the frequent hurricanes and provide the owner and tenant alike with the peace of mind needed to maintain a highly productive work environment. Personnel Profile: Jason Carruth Jason Carruth has grown up around the roofing industry his entire life.
