Welcome to September at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort. It may just be the best month of the summer
season. Perfect weather, kids back in school, time to enjoy a quiet hour on The Club sand or perhaps a

As the new stewards of this legendary California property it is our mission to expand and enhance those
benefits ultimately making your membership an enviable community asset. To this end we have just hired
two accomplished professional Club Managers to make a difference for our members. The Balboa Bay
Club & Resort’s General Manager, Dieter Hissin introduces you to Malcolm Smith and Clint Cook in his

this month. Both men come to The Balboa Bay Club & Resort with impressive career track records in the
hospitality field. They will bring professional and positive energy to your club experience as they get to know
you personally.
The grand old Club tradition continues this September with our famous Labor Day family carnival.
With the blink of an eye it will be the holiday season and we plan on making The Club the place to be in

I am excited to introduce to you our new additions to the Executive Team of

Membership experience here at The BBC.
Malcolm Smith is taking on the role of Director of Club Operations, overseeing
all aspects of the Club, including the Membership, Member Events, Recreation, Spa,

world of hospitality; he started his private club career at the Riviera Country Club
in Pacific Palisades, and fine tuned his skills in four diamond establishments such as
the Loews Hotel, Santa Monica. Malcolm has worked for Pacific Hospitality Group
for the last nine years, most recently as the General Manager of the Irvine Spectrum
Doubletree Hotel, and is looking forward to meeting you in the coming months.
Clint Cook is our new Director of Membership, focusing on the Membership
experience and working with new Members who are interested in joining the Club.
Clint has spent many years of his career in private country clubs, including Dove
Canyon Country Club, Sea Cliff Country Club, and the Monarch Beach Links, in a
number of different capacities, in particular Group Sales and Marketing.
Aaron Trent, our Director of Member Relations and Events, and I join both
Malcolm and Clint in looking forward to continuing our Club traditions, creating
new experiences for our Membership, and being part of your family memories and
traditions at The Balboa Bay Club.

DIRECTOR OF CLUB OPERATIONS
Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, I am honored to
become a part of the legend that is The Balboa Bay Club and
Resort. In my new role as Director of Club Operations I look
forward to assisting each of you with things big and small. In my
duties I’ll be overseeing the Marina operations, the Apartment
operations, the Membership and the events you have come to
love, the Spa and recreational areas around the club.
For those of you who I have not yet met I’ll share a little
background about myself. I was born and raised in Edinburgh,
Scotland, though on first meeting you probably won’t hear my
accent – long story short, I found I was repeating myself
constantly, so I made a conscious effort to speak “American”.
I started my 25 years of hospitality at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. I opened
the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica and held a multitude of roles in the five and a half years I was there.
I spent a few years at LAX at what is now the Westin Hotel, followed by the Hilton in Deerfield
Beach Florida, then a short three year stint in recruiting. A move to Vegas brought me back into
the hotel side of life at the Crowne Plaza, then the Crowne Plaza Resort Anaheim/Garden Grove
where I joined the PHG Family. For the last seven years I have had the pleasure of working with
the team at The DoubleTree by Hilton Irvine Spectrum. We have had some wonderful successes
there including winning the prestigious CARE Cup, awarded to the top hotel, out of 250, for service
in three categories – Service to our guests, service to our team members and service in our
community.
I am so excited to be a part of The Balboa Bay Club and Resort and I look forward to meeting
each of you. My email is [email protected] and my direct line is 949-630-4375, should
you need anything.

DIRCECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP
Dear Members,
To those members who I have had the pleasure of meeting
over the last few weeks, thank you for your warm welcome. I
truly look forward to becoming acquainted with all of you as
you attend The Club and participate in the many activities and
events as the summer winds down. I am honored and excited
to be part of the rich tradition of The BBC. What a wonderful
and beautiful place to come to work everyday. As with all of you,
I anticipate great things with the recent change in leadership at
the property and have confidence that we are in good hands
moving forward. I am anxious to bring my knowledge and
expertise to the tremendous team here and to enhance the overall membership experience.
I grew up in San Diego and later graduated from Snow College in Utah where I played both
basketball and golf. I have spent the last 12 years in Golf Sales; 7 years as a Membership Sales
Director at private clubs here in Orange County including SeaCliff and Marbella, and the last 5 years
at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point. I enjoy thoroughbred horse racing (my first job as a 14
year old), ice hockey, and golf as well as spending time with my family. My wife is Lonnie, and I have
two sons- Zane (10) and Reid (7).
I look forward to seeing you at The Club.

What a wonderful summer of events we had at The
Newport Beach Country Club. As we round out our
summer and get ready for fall we still have plenty going
on. We are proud to once again be part of Patriot Golf
Day which supports the Folds of Honor Foundation. The
foundation provides scholarships for children and
spouses of military service men and women killed or
disabled while serving our great nation. To date the
foundation has raised nearly 13 million dollars and
awarded more than 2,600 scholarships. Over the Labor
Day weekend we will have special competitions at the
club to help raise money for this fine cause. In addition
our own Director of Golf, Tony Letendre will be participating in his third Disney half
marathon in support of Patriot Golf Day. For more information on Patriot Golf Day feel
free to contact Tony at the club at (949) 644-9550 or visit www.patriotgolfday.com. As

MEN’S NEWS
The events at The Newport Beach Country Club
seem to just get better and better. In July we had
our 57th Annual Men’s Member Guest Regatta.
This much anticipated annual event features three
days of competition culminating in a Saturday
evening awards party. The event also features a
pairings party, a derby and much more. This is our
premier men’s event and an annual tradition for
many of the participants who come back year after
year with the same guest. As in years past this
year’s Regatta offered some fine golf play beginning
with the derby on Wednesday and continuing until
the final hole on Saturday. When play concluded
we crowned our newest champions.
Congratulations to the 2012 Regatta Champions
member Richard Beall and his partner John Beall
from Randolph Men’s Club. Our congratulations
also go out to member Tobin Bogard and his
partner, Jim Meyer from El Niguel Country Club
on their Overall Low Gross win.

EXPERIENCE THE FINE WINES OF TRINITAS
PROUDLY POURED AT
THE BALBOA BAY CLUB & RESORT
Tim and Steph Busch have always had a passion for wine and the wine
country. In 2002 they realized their dream of starting a winery. Trinitas Cellars
is a small winery based in Napa Valley that is owned and operated by the Busch
family.
Trinitas celebrates the connection among sun, soil, and humanity by working
closely with its grower society throughout Northern California. Furthermore,
Trinitas sources a broad range of varietals from the regions where climate and
soil conditions are most favorable for each specific varietal. Small quantities of
these exceptional grapes are then handcrafted into an approachable Californiastyle wine to be enjoyed as an aperitif or with food. Some of the wines come
from historical vineyards in Northern California with a number of vineyards
over a century old.
Trinitas’ signature wine is the Carneros Chardonnay. Trinitas makes a
traditional California style buttery and oaky Chardonnay. The wine is
endearingly called the “butterscotch bomb” by its fans and year after year
delivers a rich, creamy, and delicious Chardonnay. Trinitas is also becoming
known for some of its blends, including its flagship Meritage wine, as well as its
unique blend Mysterium, which changes every year.

BBC RECIPROCAL CLUBS
A LONDON CONNECTION
JUST FOR BBC MEMBERS
During a recent visit to London to attend the International Congress of Les Clefs d’Or Concierges, I jumped at the opportunity to call on two of our
distinguished reciprocal clubs in the heart of that great city.
First -- the venerable St, James Hotel and Club. Located in the shadow of the famed Ritz hotel, the Club exudes style, sophistication and service. The
quiet mews location is just steps away from Piccadilly’s superb shopping, restaurants and entertainment. and it’s not far from Buckingham Palace !
My friend and fellow Clefs d’Or, Madelaine Calon,
showed me around. She’s a refined but vivacious
blonde who knows the Club like the back of her
hand. Despite its history and traditions, the St. James
offers the best of modern comforts – elegant, yet
restful guest rooms (all unique), the award-winning
Seven Park Place for fine dining, and a cool, laid-back
bar and bistro.
Madelaine and her team love to assist visiting

BBC BOOK REPORT
MEET BBC MEMBER AND
AUTHOR EARL CARRAWAY
Earl Carraway, a Nellie Gail Ranch home owner for over 24 years recently published a book of 48 true
short stories of the Great Depression Era of the 1930’s entitled “Shake Off The Dust 1936”.
It is a memoir by the author. It is available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, Kindle, Nook and Create
Space. A 30 second TV commercial can be viewed at: YouTube Shake Off The Dust 1936. A screen play
will be written soon.
As a former teacher of History and English, the book was written for the High School and College youth
of America. The author has come to realize that parents and grandparents also enjoy true stories from
the Great Depression Era. It is written in the voice of a 17 year old much like J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher
In The Rye” which has been required reading in schools for over 50 years.
Critics say, “The book is what you would get if Mark Twain had written “The Catcher In The Rye’”.
It is in sharp contrast to the classic “The Catcher In The Rye”, which is thought to be depressing, cynical,
bitter and urges youth to not grow up because all adults are phony. The character “Harold” refuses to let
cynicism and bitterness overcome him.
A college professor from Clayton State University, Georgia requires the book for his AP English
Composition classes because he feels our youth need the message of the memoir. One of the short
stories in the book called “Sister Joshine” will be appreciated by those of the Catholic and Protestant
persuasion, “Mr. Prince” by the Jewish persuasion, “Old Ben” by African Americans. Carraway states that
there is something for everyone.
