Dear Friends,
The first impression at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort is in the hands of Fabrizio Khalona, Guest Services Manager, and
his team of valets, porters, and doormen and women at the ready for your arrival in the Club’s porte-cochère. Literally
everyone passes through that gateway. And, not only everyone, but just about everything. Khalona and crew handle it
all with grace. There are times, when 500 cars are pouring in for a major event plus delivery trucks in one direction, limos
in another, musicians with tons of equipment, outdoor gymnastic teams setting up a circus, you name it—they handle it.
Recently Fabrizio was faced with one of the more unusual requests. BBC members Jim Birmingham and his wife
Susan, Newport residents, are involved with a ranch in Texas called the Ace of Spades. The spread, located in Stephenville,
raises bulls. Big bulls that weigh an average of 1600 pounds. That’s a lot of hamburger.
Actually, Birmingham’s bulls are show stock and they were being transported on a little 20-hour driving journey from
Stephenville to Newport Beach—ultimate destination the Honda Center in
Anaheim for a great big bull show.
Just so you know, the bulls stopped in Tucson, Arizona for a six-hour rest
stop to feed, water, and do their business. You must have a specific plan
when transporting eighteen 1600 pound bulls across statelines.
Anyway, arriving in the O.C., Birmingham dropped off his friends at the
O.C. Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa to be cared for prior to the show at the
Honda Center but he had no place to park his giant rig.
They had a group of VIP guests staying here at The BBC for a few days
while attending the show so Jim and Susie drove on over in the rig and there
was Fabrizio, front and center as always practically 24/7 smiling—or should
I say laughing—as the giant truck came up to the front of The Club.
“Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Birmingham,” he said grinning.
“Nice vehicle… but I don’t think it will fit in the garage.”
Meanwhile the valet crew was chuckling, wondering who was going to
drive this monster and where was it going to go.
Fabrizio jumped in and said, “No problem, we’ll take it.”
Birmingham took it a step further.
“Can you get this rig washed and detailed?” he asked.
“Sure thing,” replied Fabrizio. Then he drove the truck across the street
to the Car Spa for a treatment.
It did cost a bit more than the standard car wash.
How much you ask? $150 to remove the road dirt from Texas to
California.
Of course when you are transporting 18 bulls valued at up to $200,000
each a $150 car wash seems in line.

Remembering Don Watson
I can picture him now, wearing his big straw hat, “Ready, Go!”
These are the oh-so famous words heard from Don Watson while
at the BBC pool. It’s not often that one has the opportunity to
work with the same person for five, ten, or even fifteen years. I
was fortunate in that Don Watson ran the swim program at The
BBC for over 20 years, during which time he taught hundreds of
children how to swim! As I’m sure most of you already know, Don
passed away the end of December after his battle with stomach
cancer.
Since his passing, I have had conversations with members, reflecting back on their
memories of Don and their swim experiences. Christy Sturgess reminisced about her
daughter, Brittanny (who is now 24). Brittanny would not go into the water at all when
she was younger, she would simply cry and cry. After one lesson with Don, she broke
through that fear and went on to swim with The BBC swim team years later. Don had a
way about him, with his calm voice and witty sense of humor he would encourage, entrust
and promote the talents of so many people.
After one of his surgeries, Don and I had a conversation about the importance of
sports and athletics. He mentioned how strongly he felt that so much of what he endured
as an athlete (the tough workouts, the competition, gaining endurance, and pushing
oneself) really helped him get through some of the most painful moments of his illness.
This is a true testament to a real coach and athlete.
Thank you for all that you gave us Don, you will be missed!

For those wanting to celebrate the weekend before Valentine’s Day, the First Cabin
Restaurant is offering a three course a la carte dinner menu. Each course offers a choice
of two items. This is in addition to our regular menu, which will also be available. The
dining room will be serving dinner from 5:00 to 10:00pm on Friday and Saturday
evenings—with live piano music from 6:30 to 9:30pm, and Sunday dinner will be
served from 5:00 to 9:00pm. Also Duke’s Place will have music all evening long.

Valentine’s Day Dinner, Tuesday, February 14th
For those wanting to create “an evening to remember” the First Cabin Restaurant is
offering a five course prix fixe dinner. This is the only menu available for this special
evening. Each course offers a choice of items. For example, the main course will
include three options: Duet of Petit Filet and Half Maine Lobster, Seared Hawaiian
Ono or Petit Rack of Lamb. This is priced at $80 per person (not including tax and
gratuity). The dining room will be serving dinner from 5:00-10:00pm and there will
be live piano music featuring Jim Roberts from 6:00-10:00pm. Also Duke’s Place will
have entertainers Paco and Laura Angelini from 7:30 to 11:00pm.

The beautiful blonde bride wore a Yves Saint Laurent suit in crisp pure
white fabric and stood tall in her black Louboutin pumps next to her longtime
beau attired in Armani.
It is a second marriage for both Dalita and Gregson who have been dating
for many years. The handsome couple tied the knot in a surprise civil ceremony
at the old Orange County Courthouse, Santa Ana at 9 am on January 13, 2012
without fanfare.
In fact, the brides parents Mardo and Seyda Ayvazyan were out of the
country on vacation. Dalita and Gregson called them with the news.
They were joined at the courthouse by his family including mom and dad Nadine and Bob Hall and brother and sister-in-law Chad and
Pam Hall.
The bride’s sister Sheila Mellilo stood up for Dalita and was joined by BBC Governor John Wortmann witnessing the vows.
Following the ceremony the couple and small wedding party enjoyed a celebration luncheon in The First Cabin at The Balboa Bay Club.
The next week, upon their return, the bride’s parents hosted a special dinner at 21 Oceanfront with close friends Leo and Zar Gugasian, John
and Ann Wortmann, and Judy Barry.
The newlyweds will jet off to Istanbul, Turkey for a Valentine’s honeymoon, and then in May will host a reception in Palm Desert at the
estate of Nadine and Bob Hall.
