This little book is great for gift ideas or just having around the house for people to look at. (Y ou
can make this bigger or smaller if you would like)
You will need:
• cardboard at least 5”x10” (I used a cereal box)
• a solid piece of card stock 12”x12”
• a patterned piece of paper 12”x12” (it’s easier if
it isn’t card stock)
• embellishments and items to decorate that fi t
your theme
First you will need to do some cutting. Cut your
cardboard so you have 2 pieces that are 5”x5” (this
is the base for your covers). Now cut your patterned paper so you have 2 pieces that ar e 6”x6”
(this will cover your covers). Lastly cut your solid
card stock into 2 strips 4.75”x12” (this will make
your pages). Now if you ar e using cardboard that
is patterned on one side you will want to cover that
side completely with your patterned paper. Center
your cardboard on your patterned paper and then
wrap like a present. There will be 1/2” on all sides
to fold over to your solid side. Make sure to cut
your cor ners so you have a nice fl at fit. Do this
with both pieces. Now set them aside so you can
make your pages. Take your 2 long strips and glue
them end to end so they overlap 1/2”. Now fold
them at the overlap (to one side or the other). Now
you will need to mark fr om your center fold 4.75”
in both directions. Some people choose to cut off
the extra leftover at the ends, I do not. Now you
need to fold the paper wher e your marks ar e in
accordion style. You will now attach your pages to
your covers. I leave my short pieces on and this is
what I attach to the covers. This gives me 2 whole
extra pages because I can cut out a squar e to put
on the front and back covers to fill it in solid. Now
you have your accor dion book. Just use your embellishment to decorate your book. Add pictures
and journaling
to finish it off. If
you would like a
closure for the
book you can
attach ribbon to
the back and tie
it off to keep the
book closed.
This is a ver y
simple version
of an accor dion
book. There are
others online that are more complex. I chose this one for
beginners or someone who would want to make them in
bulk for presents.

1 1/2 C. cut fresh green beans
2 Tbsp. chopped pecans
1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
Place beans in a saucepan and cover with water;
bring to a boil. Cook, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes or
until crisp-tender. Meanwhile, in a skillet, sauté the
pecans in butter for 3 minutes or until golden brown.
Drain beans; add to skillet. Sprinkle with salt and

Something To Sing About

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our
God. Psalm 147:1
I understand why I’ve never been asked to join a choir or
sing a solo. Musical talent is not one of my gifts. I discovered this at 9 years of age when I was outside one day
singing lustily. My mother opened the door and asked,
“Is one of the calves sick? I think I just heard one.”
My mother’s words have never kept me from praising God
in song, however. And when I preach somewhere, I enthusiastically join in congregational singing (making sure, of
course, not to stand too close to the microphone).
God’s great salvation fills me with gratitude, and one
way to express my joy is to sing about it. That’s why I’m
puzzled by people who say they are Christians but admit
that they seldom attend church services, almost never
listen to Christian music, and find singing hymns and
listening to sermons boring. I can understand nonbelievers saying this because they know neither God nor the
joy of salvation. But believers do!
Reflect often and deeply on the riches you have in
Christ. If you feel joyful, you will want to praise the Lord.
And even if you are a poor singer like me, you’ll still say
a hearty “Amen” to the psalmist’s words: “It is good to
sing praises to our God” (Ps. 147:1).

Son of God, with Him to be. —Bliss

THE CAMERA STORE
Recently my daughter, Kim, called to tell me our old
building in downtown New Castle was burning. Sure
enough, it was on the last news and I wanted to go in
town to see what was left and at least get some pictures to send out.
We moved into the building in 1974. I guess you
could say it was due to redevelopment. There has
been a camera store for almost 40 years. We got the
building when Eckerd’s Drug store moved out. I remember Eckerd was jam packed with all kinds of stuff
and had a prescription department that looked down
on the main floor.
I worked for Jack Gerson for some twenty years. He
told me he started to work at that building as a watchmaker for Klivens Jewelry. He also told me he swept
the walk, shoveled the snow and washed the windows.
One time Jack had a pocket watch he couldn’t get working correctly and his bench was on the second floor.
One day, in disgust, he opened the window and threw
the watch across the street at Murphy’s Five and Ten.
He then gave the customer a new watch.
My father had me downtown one day and there
was a man passing out flyers saying, “Come and see
the Black Whale.” I could read and thought that was
a great idea, so I put up a fuss. In those days, someone would bring in a very dead whale in a railroad car
packed in ice and charged you a quarter or so to see
and touch it. I thought that’s what was being advertised.
My father took me down the alley, opened the door to
the business and said, “This is the Black Whale.” That
was about 1933 and the first time I saw the bar in back
of the camera store.
Kodak is no longer in the camera business. With
film, camera and processing, we thought we were in
camera heaven. There were new things coming out
all the time.
One Christmas night, the police called me. Our alarm
had gone off and I rushed downtown to find someone
had driven through the front window. Quite a Christmas present.
One of the biggest things we did was demonstrations. This always brought in a big crowd, and Ernie
was the expert. Darkroom was the number one hobby. Color printing was big and we just could not keep
enough slide film in stock.
Kodak came out with 110 slides that were about 1”x
1” and were made in the 110 camera. Someone brought
out a 110 viewer that we found on sale or close-out
and bought all we could. Unfortunately, this did not go
over at all and we moved all these bargains to the 3rd
floor. I’m going to have to see what is left. Maybe the
110 viewers will be on top of the pile of rubble.
