THE AREA !
The Cinque Terre National Park with its 4,300 acres is the smallest National Park in Italy and, at the same time, the most densely
populated, with 5.000 residents shared in FIVE VILLAGES: RIOMAGGIORE, MANAROLA, CORNIGLIA, VERNAZZA AND MONTEROSSO AL
MARE
It is one of the most uncontaminated areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Five miles of rocky coast among two promontories, thousands of
kilometres of dry-laid stone walls, five small towns castled up on stone spur in minuscule creeks.
The vineyards, typical of this area, have contributed to create a unique landscape with dry-laid stone walls, winding paths, enchanting
beaches between cliffs and clear waters.
Here man in more than a thousand years has "changed" the natural environment by dissecting the steep slopes of the hills to obtain
strips of arable land, the so-called “ciàn” (local dialect), supported by about seven thousand miles of stone walls, the length of the
Great Wall of China.
The Cinque Terre area offers beautiful footpaths with breath-taking views, churches, oratories and old castles, diving, food and wines of
first quality, being National Park and UNESCO protected territory since 1997.
MONTEROSSO AL MARE
The largest village of the Cinque Terre and also the first to be documented (1056).
Consisting of two districts, the old village and Fegina, the more touristy part, Monterosso al Mare also boasts important monuments.
Amongst these the XIV century church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist), on the colle dei (hills of) Cappuccini, the castle of
Fieschi and the monastry containing works of Van Dick, Cambiaso, Piola and Guido Reni. Villa Montale can be found at Fegina, where
the Nobel prize winner for Literature stayed.

vernazza
Vernazza, a Cinque Terre village that was closed due to the fall 2011 floods, is on the New York Time's list of 46 Places to Go in 2013, the
only Italian destination to make the list this year Considered by many to be the most charming of the Cinque Terre was documented for the first time in 1080. The remarkable
economic and social level reached by the village in Medieval times and still today testified by the town planning conformation and by
the presence of architectural elements of great importance, like lodges, churches, casetorri and arcades.

corniglia
The only village of the Cinque Terre not in contact with the sea, rising on top of a rock promontory. Its low and wide houses are more
similar to those of the hinterland than to the typical coastal houses, evidence that the traditional vocation of the village has always
been more inclined towards the land than the sea. The most important monument of the village is the Church of San Pietro (St. Peter),
of gothic-genovese style built around 1350 on the remains of the previous building.

riomaggiore
We have the first news of Riomaggiore only in 1251, when the inhabitants of the district of Carpena, spread coast, swore faith to the
Republic of Genova. Between 1200 and 1300 the inhabitants of these settlements decided to go down towards the sea and give llife
to the village. Riomaggiore boasts monuments of great interest, among which San Giovanni Battista (St. Giovanni Baptist), a church
erected in 1340
