Many of us see the Barrett-Jackson auctions on
TV or read about them in Sports Car Market.
Others are at every auction, being part of the
festivities and sitting in those front three rows
with the free flowing alcohol. Preferred seating
is earned by being one of the best customers of
Barrett-Jackson. By participating in every B-J
auction each year, and having many years of
this history. Park Place Ltd buys and sells
many cars this way and our host for our October club
meeting,
Shannon was standing right there...

The meeting covered each

talked about the upcoming holiday party. There
are still efforts and planning that needs to happen
before the announcement

that many people are behind that evening we all enjoy and it will once again
happen… albeit with a few
changes. Without our membership chair there, we didn’t talk about the number of

to wait until another chance.
Another key topic discussed

tions. Gordy opened nominations for the differing positions. The
nominations will remain open until closed during the November
meeting. At this point Bill Gehring has been nominated for President, Ken Case for Vice President, and Ron Calkins for Treasurer.
If you want to take your turn in a role, now’s a great time to step
up. There
is more info
about the
roles on
page 9 of
this newsletter.
When Shannon got his chance, he had us tour the
showrooms looking at the numerous cars ranging from
Hot Rod style classics, to Porsche speedster recreations,
to foreign sports cars.
As we walked Shannon shared that as a SAAB dealer,
they’ve sold all the new SAABs they had, but still have
a huge parts inventory so if you need
your Swedish car serviced… give
them a chance. He also shared a few
stories about cars that sold or were
purchased at auction. Shannon also
showed us the Alfa Spider they had
for sale and talked about the Nikki
Lauda Alfa Spider they sold recently.
Showroom with a Cobra, Ferrari, Pantera, Lotus, BMW, and more.
As the evening closed, all of us wandered through the cars talking about
details while admiring the high quality of everything they sell. The nice
evening ended after some pizza,
good conversation, and wonderful
cars.
Hey Park Place and Shannon…
Thanks for hosting us!

President’s Column
Looking Back at Our Great Club
Greetings Alfisti! Elections are here, so show up and
run for office or nominate & vote. Our international
executive-in-chief of the Iniezione editing will have
something on the positions (page 9) with most not
requiring all that much time. I know for me as il Presidente’ I’ve spent some time coordinating a few
meetings, providing input to the board members, and
writing this column. It came with lots of prestige...
lots and lots of that. I’ve been able to call myself
President for three years now! What a boost to my
self-esteem! So, if anyone wants to be the top dog of
the world (NW Alfa world anyway. Editor), this is
your opportunity. And don’t forget about the other
club positions as well as volunteering for special
events, it’s a good way to be involved and keep the
club viable.
I wonder how many club drives we’ve had in the last
three years? Two of the big drives that have become
a staple have been the Anti-football Drive on, or near
New Year’s Day and the three day ½ Fast Lap in September. I tell you I am amazed at the numbers of
people and cars we get for the New Year’s drive. It
really doesn’t make sense to me but I love the turnout. Alfa heaters must be warm enough considering
a few of those trips were quite cold. And the ½ Fast
Lap, from wine to windmills, all the nice roads in between, and even a trip to Canada this year. While I
missed that one, these are some of the best drives
club members can enjoy. Add in other runs like Ken
and Louisa Case’s August adventure and we’ve had
multiple opportunities for scenery soaking par excellence.
By Merril Gordon
due to the lack of member
support and volunteers those
track only members left the
club. It was fun while it lasted
and maybe we’ll bring more
track days back in the future,
but that will require dedication
from a new crop of volunteers.
We’ll see how our new Gita e’
Corsa evolves in the next few
years; hopefully that event
will become another one of
our signature activities. The
remaining loss of members
may be due to lack of new Alfa
Romeo product, i.e. we’re essentially a vintage club
these days with no new sheet metal to draw in new
Alfisti blood. I’d say this though, much of the remaining membership are active and participate. That to
me means a strong base and those still with us are
enthusiastic about their cars (especially me), the fine
people and the club’s adventures.
Let me write for just a moment about that organization which is perennially healthy and an incredible
consumer of wealth; no not a club or business, but
our Internal Revenue Service. The revision of rules
governing nonprofits killed off vast numbers of small
organizations and if it wasn’t for the knowledge, dedication, and extensive work of our club Treasurer Thomas Jermann, we might have lost our exempt status
as well. For most members this was pretty much invisible, but for those in the know, Thomas was absolutely key in keeping our non-profit status valid.
Thanks again Thomas.
And we have a Holiday Gala coming up right away.
Hasn’t it been a wonderful end of year bash for our
club? I’ve always enjoyed them and appreciate the
work by those who’ve put it on. This year will be
more casual and less extravagant what with the loss
in track revenues, but our club was probably ready
for some changes on that front as well. Yes I know,
details are slow in finalizing, but it will happen, just
be ready to jump on the reservation list once the final
details are set. It will be a wonderful event and another opportunity to rub shoulders with your equally
high-class Alfisti membership.
See you soon, hopefully with jazzing throttles and
shiny paint,
I’m not sure if we can call this a real downer but our
club membership has dropped substantially. The first Merril Gordon
big series of drops was when we had to back away
NWARC President
from so many of our track days. Many of those members didn’t own Alfas and were members due to IRS
requirements. When we had to drop the track days

The Iniezione is the monthly newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club, a non-profit organization of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. NWARC is a regional chapter of the national Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC). Chapter meetings are held the
second Tuesday (Unless otherwise noted) of most months except December. Membership dues are $63 per year, which
includes subscriptions to either the digital and/or print versions of the Iniezione and the monthly national publication, Alfa
Owner. For information about joining the club, contact the membership director listed in the right hand column. Opinions
expressed in the Iniezione are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the club. (The author may simply be nuts!) Publication of articles describing technical procedures does not constitute an endorsement by the club, its
officers, or AROC. It is the responsibility of the person performing any procedure to accept all consequences of his or her

Alfa News
On October 13 the folks at COYS Auction House (UK)
held a sale of the Ritter Museum Collection. In the
mix, lot #530-A was an odd race prepped 1970 Alfa
(AR 2412517) 2000 GT Veloce with 8 inch wheels,
competition spec Engine, Roll bar. If you’re checking
out the photo, notice it’s an open top 2000 Veloce,
professionally converted into a spider with reinforced
chassis and a custom made hard top to go with the
car. There were a few other more normal Alfas as
part of this sale, but this was too unique to pass by…
though I didn’t bid.
On September 12th, if you were hanging ‘round the historic Nordschleife circuit at
the Nürburgring, you would have seen the new Alfa Romeo 4C set an amazing lap
time of just 8 minutes 4 seconds. That is fast, and in an impressive league. Yes,
its 34 seconds slower than an Enzo, but the
same as an Audi R8, and a Porsche 911
GT3 as well as a modified Cayman S.
Driver, journalist and Nürburgring expert
Horst von Saurma was driving… as he was
on many other great cars. The Alfa 4C
performance is rated at 0 to 60 MPH in un8 minutes 4 seconds… that’s fast!
der 4.5 seconds, with 160 MPH top speed,
deceleration max in the range of 1.2 G and lateral acceleration at over 1.1 G. All
this is achieved thanks to a power to weight ratio under 9 Lbs per HP, values worthy of a true supercar. The fun part of this Nurburgring speed test, Alfa took no
chances and even speed taped the seams on the car to ensure best aerodynamics.
Down south in the little latitudes in Mexico, the 26th
annual La Carrera Panamericana started on Oct
25th. Once again Martin Lauber and Mark Colbert are
attacking the fantastic event in El Taxi, the race
proven 1965 Giulia Super. (At 116 MPH on the
freeway in Qaxaca they were passed by three police
cars) The first day had the team go from 31st overall
to 11th, while also taking 1st place in Class. On the
2nd day they preserved their 11th overall position and
took another 1st in Class, but damaged the transmission in the process. On the 3rd day the team did well but moved to 13th place
overall and still 1st in Class. Though Day 4 was a fast day, Day 5 had rain which
slowed El Taxi down a bit. Though the 7th and final day had them pushing for 1st
in class, the alternator siezed… oh well. One stage they drove using nothing but
gravity and after a few wrenches crossed the finish line. Congrats! For more details about the El Taxi team go to: http://martinstaxi.com/
In addition, another Alfa Romeo team made up of Conrad Stevenson, Nelsen Chan,
Ed Adams, and their friend Andrew driving “El Platillo Volador" driving the
1965 Sprint Speciale. They are taking full advantage of the “wing nut factor” as
Conrad’s daughter, Raven calls it. It’s the rare mental condition that asserts that
you can really do anything. They
were challenged on the first day of
racing but raced up to 23rd overall
and 2nd in Class by the 3rd day.
Day 4 almost added a puppy to the
crew while Day 5 helped the team
stay in 1st place in Class. Though
holding a solid 2nd on Day 6, their
solid last day and El Taxi’s broken
alternator helped… El Platillo Volador came in for the win of 1st in Class for the
race! Congratulations! For more details about the El PV team go to:
http://elplatillovolador285.com/
There were also a couple other nice Alfas participating in this year’s event driven by
teams from Mexico.

Miniature Alfa Romeos
There are always new miniature cars being released for us sick folks who always seem to buy them to add to
our shelves. Here are some of the ones that I’ve seen lately.
These first couple come from the folks at ABCBrianza who sell many of the
specialized miniatures from Italy. (Abcbrianza.blogspot.it)
First, is the 1948 8c2900 that won the Argentinean GP. In 1/43 scale, this
is made by a company in Italy that specializes in Alfa Romeo. The maker
is Alfa Model 43… kind of catchy name. They have many other rare Alfa’s
to add to your collection.
Another great new miniature is by EMC. It’s the 1933 6c1750 GS FigoniFalaschi bodied car. This is the car, restored and owned by our neighbor
to the north in Vancouver BC, David Cohen, as it won Best of Show in 2012
at Ville d’Este. The cost of this car is a little high (336 Euros) but I think
it’s a great addition to any collection, especially anyone who’s seen this
car.
1997 Alfa Romeo Schigera show car as
built and shown by Ital Design at the
Turin Auto Show. I was lucky enough to see and even sit in the actual car
at Ital Design, thanks to Fabrizzio Guigario. This model is made by Technomodel and can be purchased at a AlpiModel, or for $145 at ABModels
(Autobarn).
There are also some great other 1/43rd scale miniatures that are easily
found online at places like Alpimodel.

Club Officer Elections
The club elections on Wednesday, November 13th will be for the 4 officers;
President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. All positions are
part of the leadership Board along with
volunteer positions for the Activities,
Membership, Webmaster, and Newsletter Editor. The October meeting will be
your chance to chat with the current
club officers to determine how you can
best support the club helping in these
roles.
President: The easiest job on the
Board. Controls the activities of the
overall Board and runs the Board meetings and presides over the club meetings. Writes a monthly column for the
newsletter. Helps to find and fill openings in club committee spots. Typically
uses around 5 hours monthly… plus attendance at the club meetings. Requires only passion and some leaderships skills!
Contact Merril Gordon
for specifics:
[email protected]
Vice President: Fills in for the club President if the President cannot attend a meeting. Arranges locations and speakers
(if any) for monthly club meetings. Tracks attendance at monthly club meetings. Typically requires 2 or 3 hours effort per
month making arrangements for speakers or meeting locations. Requires only organization and communication skills!
Contact Bill Gehring for specifics: [email protected]
Secretary: Keeps notes during our club and board meetings. Forwards the meeting notes to other board and committee
members. Typically requires less than 1 hour effort monthly outside of the meetings themselves. Requires only organization and communication skills! Contact Gordy Hyde for specifics: [email protected]
Treasurer: This role keeps our club finances in line. The key tasks are to track the money, pay the club bills, cover the
track and driving events with insurance certificates, and lately… figure out the tax exempt status. This requires good accounting skills and accuracy… plus uses a bit more time than the other roles… probably around 8 hours monthly is a good
estimate. Check with Thomas Jermann for specifics: [email protected]
Non-elected positions you can volunteer for are Activities, Membership, Webmaster, and Newsletter Editor.
Activities: This role keeps all the events on the calendar and helps work with those planning the events to best fit the
schedule, with minimal conflicts. They also work with the Treasurer to ensure events have insurance coverage when
needed, and to help keep event costs under control for the club and members. The role requires social skills and some
organization talent as well as an hour per month. Contact Shannon Low for specifics: [email protected]
Membership: The simple fun role of welcoming any new members to the club with an e-mail or phone call, as well as
provide info about the club to prospective members who may have shown up at an event or meeting. Both gives you a
chance to brag about the cool things we do as part of NWARC. Requires a couple hours per month and requires good social skills. Contact Paul Affolter for specifics: [email protected]
Webmaster: Keeps information up to date on the website with the latest meeting info, and newsletter postings. If you
can update other items, all the better. You would need to invest about 1 or 2 hours a month unless you get hooked, then
you can put in 20+ hours. You choose. Requires understand web applications and programming. Contact Earl Krygier
for specifics: [email protected]
Newsletter Editor: You need to gather stories and photos from people attending events, or “report” the event yourself.
Pull together info about news, upcoming events, meetings, or any dirt you can find to put into the monthly digital and print
newsletters. The requirements are some mild computer skills, reasonable communication, and about 16 hours per
month… plus attendance at events.
Ask me (Fred Russell) for specifics at: [email protected]
You know the roles… it’s rather easy, lots of opportunity for learning on the job, and a chance to take your turn as
a leader in the best Alfa Romeo club around. Thanks, and we’ll see you on Nov 13th! Fred R
