Born to Ride
In 1936, when a young Bill Linderman
started hanging around railyards and
quizzing hobos on how to hop a freight
train, you can be sure it wasn’t for a
book report. ’36 was one of the toughest
years in this country for drought, with
all but a few homesteaders giving up,
and you can just about see the 16-yearold thinking there had to be another
way to make a living. So that August in
time for Cheyenne’s big Frontier Days
rodeo, Bill hugged his mother, grabbed
a jacket and clean shirt, and with $5 in
his pocket and his bareback rigging in
tow, he hopped the freight as it slowed
down in Bridger, headed for his destiny.
What Bill couldn’t have been thinking
about during that 28-hour ride is that
within a few short years, he and his
four brothers would become one of the
most famous rodeo families in history
(another, the “Riding Greenoughs”
were also from Red Lodge. It must be
something we put in the water.) Even
less could he have imagined the lasting
imprint he would leave on the sport of
rodeo itself. What he did know was that
whatever happened, he would not end
up like the dirty, smelly hobo asleep at
the other end of the boxcar.
The King The gangly 16-year-old
who’d “learned a few tricks” from his big
brothers Johnny and
Lup won the bareback
event at Cheyenne that
weekend, and over
the next 23 years, Bill
took titles in about
everything he tried. He
had a solid work ethic,
a sharp intelligence,
and a wicked sense
of humor, all of
which contributed
to his nickname “The King.” His best
events were saddle bronc, bareback
and bulldogging (steer wrestling). In
a letter to his mother after a string of
injuries, he said he was going to stick
to bulldogging because “it’s not as hard
on me.” In 1943 he took his first World
Championship title in bareback. In ’45
he won saddle bronc, and in ‘50 became
the first Triple Crown winner (three
World Championships in a season),
including his first All-Around Cowboy
title. 1953 brought his second AllAround title, and in ‘54 he was on track
to win All-Around again, until he broke
his arm and was forced to drop out of
bulldogging. He did, of course, continue
to ride saddle bronc and bareback that
season, since his left arm was still in
good shape. Bill retired from rodeo in
1959, with career winnings that totalled
around $500,000—an
unparalleled high for
his era. It’s impossible
to compare his

winnings to today, but it’s
arguable he was one of the finest
competitors the sport has ever known.
Beyond the titles and the broken bones
though, Bill was well respected by about
everyone he met. Except, maybe, Gene
Autry. For the opening ceremony at
Madison Square Garden’s rodeo, Autry
had a tradition of riding out into the
center of the arena, rearing up on his
horse Champion and firing off his sixshooters. Bill and his friends were so put
off by those “phony Hollywood SOBs”
that one year they climbed onto the roof
of their hotel and harvested themselves
a bunch of pigeons. That evening, they
shimmied up into the rafters of the
Garden, and when Autry fired his guns
they dropped half a dozen pigeons on
him. Bill and his buddy were in stitches,
Champion was in hysterics, and Autry
was nearly in the dust. “The King” got
himself kicked out of the Garden that
year.

Organization
begins In the early
days, rodeos were run
more like a Wild West
show than what we
see now. Through the
‘20s and ‘30s, Madison
Square Garden’s show
was a month long with
56 shows, followed by
30 more in Boston over
the next two weeks. The
pace was grueling, the
winnings were meager
and by 1936, the cowboys
had had enough. They
walked out of that year’s Boston show,
claiming they were being cheated by
promoters. Alice Greenough was one of
those who walked out, joining the firstever Cowboys “Turtle” Association (so
named because they took so long to get
things done and stuck their necks out
in the process), which would become
today’s PRCA.
In 1951, Bill Linderman became
president of that association, and

pushed for two huge changes to the
sport during his seven years at the
helm. The first was to bring cowgirls
back into the arena (girls’ events had
been outlawed from PRCA rodeos
after WWII), and the second was to
create one big championship event
where all of the top cowboys would
compete against each other on the same
stock in the same arena. At the time,
there was no end-of-season event and
championships were awarded on total
money made over the year. Bill wanted
something more, and in 1959 the
National Finals Rodeo was born.
Tragedy strikes One night
in Denver in 1965, Bill had a drink at
a favorite bar. Writing the check, he
filled in the address line with the word
“heaven.” When his buddies started
ribbing him over it, he responded “Boys,
let me tell you something. I’ll be in
heaven before any of you guys—and
some of you might not even make it.”
Ever after, people have wondered just
what had got into him at that moment.
Perhaps it was a premonition though,
because six hours later his plane crashed
upon landing and burst into flames. He
was 45. News that “The King” was dead
rocked the world of rodeo. Tributes ran
in newspapers across the country, many
of them mentioning how Bill’s new
address is Heaven.

cowgirl legends
“It may sound easy to work
only eight seconds about every three
days, but Mister, it’s a long eight
seconds!” ~Margie Greenough in 1937.
Alice and Margie Greenough, together
with their famous rodeo brothers
Frank, Bill and Turk grew up on rangy,
half-wild horses their father rounded
up from the mountains around Red
Lodge. “Packsaddle Ben,” as he was
known, would point the kids to one of
those wild horses and say, “if you can’t
ride ‘em, walk.” So they learned to ride.
And drive teams, and hunt, and pack
in the mountains. At age14, Alice took
over her dad’s job of riding the 37-mile
daily mail route from Billings, through
winters that often dipped to minus-40
degrees. “It was a good teaching, a good
background,” Alice later remembered.
Thanks to that background, by the time
the girls joined Jack King’s Wild West
Show in 1929, they more than knew

their way around a tough
horse. The King show
launched their careers,
and soon they were
winning their way across
the country.
In those days, cowgirls
rode the same stock
in the same events
as the cowboys.

wave.” Margie was often said to
be graceful in the arena, though
she was the first to point out,
“it’s no rocking chair.”
Both women were inducted into
the Cowgirl Hall of Fame and
throughout their lives offered
proud support for Red Lodge’s Home of
Champions Rodeo.

Although local ranch
hands had been competing for
bragging rights since the first ranchers
settled this area, Rodeo became official
here in 1930. With a purse of $5,000
and a brand-new arena, Red Lodge’s
first rodeo was a 3-day party of parades,
a wild horse race, Indian relay and
running races by a group of Crow
Indians from Pryor, a Roman standing
race (where the cowboy stood astride
two horses), a chariot race and more.
The weekend ended with claims to an
audience of 20,000–though that number
seems unlikely given the stands could
hold no more than 1,100 at a time.
The real excitement at that first show
was seeing Turk and Alice Greenough
ride. It was said that Alice, who was
tiny by today’s standards (check out the
dress of hers on display in the Museum)
rode with sheer force as if she could
dominate a thousand-pound bucking
bronc by strength of will.
Turk on horseback was
sensational, and had a
dismount that looked
like it was all just a walk
in the park. Both were
rising stars by then, and
throughout
their careers
made it a point
to come home
for the 4th of
July. After Bill
Linderman
won his second
Triple Crown in
1953, the event
became known
as the Home
of Champions rodeo in honor of
the two famous families, whose
9 winning cowboys and cowgirls
represented Red Lodge across the
country.
And it doesn’t end there. The
area continues to turn out
champions. John Edwards took
home the NFR aggregate title in
1970; Deb Greenough (greatnephew to Alice and Margie)
was 1993’s World Champion
bareback rider as well as a 13time NFR qualifier; and bull
rider Clint Branger, who together
with 19 others created the
Professional Bull
Riders association,
is widely considered
“the greatest rider
never to win a title.”
So when you’re in the
stands this year, keep
your eye on the Red
Lodge kids—you just
might see them again.

you have to know about Red

of muddy hiking boots, tackle boxes spilling

History
There are a lot of
legends from the past that
need simply to be taken
for granted and not
scrutinized too closely.
The legend of John
“Liver Eatin’”
Johnston is a good
example. Here’s a
guy who reportedly
earned his nickname
by carving out and
eating the livers of
men who harmed
him. Among his
many frontier
exploits, he served as
the Red Lodge deputy
sheriff for a period
of time just before
the turn of the century. The sheriff ’s
gig was probably easy compared to all
that carving and eating – only his close
friends knew for sure. Still, he gets a nod

for originality and his log cabin now
stands next to the Red Lodge Visitor’s
Center on the north end of town.
By the way, how did the town of Red
Lodge get its name? One theory stems
from the fact that Crow Indians used
this part of the country as a summer
camp. They came to worship, rest and
hunt – apparently living in lodges
that were colored red. For the other
couple of theories and some accurate
information, visit the Carbon County
Historical Museum – conveniently
located on Broadway and staffed by
people who have read their history
books.
We know that Red Lodge was officially
established in 1884. Shortly after, in
1887, the Rocky Fork Coal Company
opened the area’s first (coal) mine.

For those of you wanting to explore Red Lodge’s historically rich
neighborhoods up close, a self-guided walking tour is available thanks to the Carbon

that followed the bust. It will guide you to the Victorian “castles” of the Hi Bug district and
to the once glorious Theatorium decorated with marble statues imported from Italy. With
neighborhoods dubbed “Little Italy” and “Finn Town,” and many buildings on the National Historic
Register, Red Lodge is a fascinating place to explore.

Many good things come to an

late 1800’s, so European
immigrants moved here by the
hundreds. Finns, Scots, Irish, Italians,
Slavs and a few other nationalities
settled in to a frontier way of life. They
brought civilization and common
sense to an otherwise bleak landscape.
Red Lodge entered a period
of economic wealth and
questionable behavior,
boasting as many as 20
saloons when population
numbers peaked.
All that money was bound to attract
some interest, so in 1897, members of
the outlaw band the Wild Bunch rolled
into town bragging about how they
were going to rob one of the banks.
Local lawmen got wind of their plans,
though, and ran them out of town
before they saw a penny. Not
that this was anything new to
some of the characters listed
on the hotel’s historic guest
register – Buffalo Bill Cody and
Calamity Jane among them.
Showing their entrepreneurial
spirit, the local citizenry responded
to circumstances created by
Prohibition and developed their
own brand of bootleg liquor. Known as
“cough syrup,” the concoction replaced
coal as the town’s economic mainstay,
supplying “patients” from the Midwest
to California.
Just in time and at an appropriate
juncture, it became apparent that people
wanted to come here to take a look
around and have some fun. Tourism,
recreation and ranching became the
area’s primary means of support, and
they still are today. The next chapter is
up to you!

Fishtail Nye Neighborhood
Take a drive west out of town, and
Highway 78 will escort you deep
into some of the most beautiful
country you’ll ever set eyes on. Wide,
sweeping turns of two-lane blacktop
open up vistas of meadows so lush
they were once among the country’s
largest producers of wool. To this
day, most of this land is used for beef
production, on small family ranches
run by descendants of the valleys’ first
homesteaders in the 1910s and ‘20s.
But it wasn’t agriculture that first
brought white men to this high country.
After gold was discovered in the
granite mountains around Cooke City,
prospectors fanned out over this whole
territory. Instead of gold, what they
found in the Stillwater River valley was
Chromite – a metal whose fortunes are
tied to war, as it is critical in hardening
steel for munitions.
54
FAC E B O O K . CO M / RE D LO D G E
The area’s first mining company started
up in 1884, and within two years the
town of Nye boomed to nearly 400
hardy souls supported by a smelter,
store, commisary, and six saloons
(the more civilizing influences of a
church and school would come later).
Unfortunately for the town of Nye,
though, they were smack-dab in the
middle of Crow Reservation lands, and
the mine was forced to close. By 1889
this little boom town had seen its first
bust.
It wouldn’t be long, though. In 1892,
Crow lands were pushed east toward
the Bighorn River, which meant local
miners were back in business. Because
of things like limitations in mining
technique and the mines’ high-country
remoteness (at the Benbow mine
during the ‘40s, a 3.5-mile aerial tram
carried ore down the mountainside
to the mill), the next 80 years saw the
T W IT TE R.COM / R ED LOD GEM ONTA NA
same pattern of boom and bust. Mines
opened, houses and schools were built,
populations grew, and then Chromite
demand fell and everything was sold
and carted off. The town of Absarokee
is dotted with houses that were built
at various mining camps (some at an
elevation of 8,500’), and moved into
town as each mine went bust.
During these on-and-off mining years,
the real backbone of this area took
hold. Montana was in its homesteading
boom, and between 1909 and 1923,
more than 1,300 claims were staked
in Stillwater county. July’s annual Nye
Goes Nuts celebration (check our
calendar for dates) originated in 1939,
when 1,400 neighbors and friends
gathered on a local ranch for a party
that included wrestling, clowns, snake
charmers, a picnic and fundraiser. The
event is still a great way to take a peek

Ranch
into how a vibrant ranching community
lets loose and shakes off the long winter.
Once you’re in the neighborhood, you
can’t help but stop off in Fishtail. With a
population of 78 and a main street one
block long, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped
back in time. But this little town is long
on charm, so whether you manage to
catch their Fishtail Family Fun Day in
June, or find yourself wandering the
aisles of the General Store that dates
back to
1900,
you’re
gonna
love Fishtail. Don’t say we didn’t warn
you. And, speaking of warnings, here’s
one to chew on: These people know
beef. For steaks (and more) that go
beyond your expectations, stop in at
any of the restaurants in the valley. No
really, do. And come hungry.

Cooke City & Silver Gate
No summertime visit to the Yellowstone
area is complete without a drive over the
Beartooth Highway and a stop in the
bustling, historic towns of Cooke City
and Silver Gate. Though we often think
of them as a single destination, they
actually got their start in very different
ways. The towns boast that they have
a year-round population of about 100
people and 300 people in the summer.
Today, both towns still offer a hearty
dose of rugged frontier character, complete with warm hospitality and service
that ensures no visit is ever your last.
Whether your stop includes burgers or
steaks, coffee or another kind of brew,
you can’t go wrong up here. (It must
be something about the altitude—
everything just tastes better when you’re
almost a mile and a half high.)
On your next ski trip, plan a few extra
days and head up (via Gardiner, MT)

for the legendary Sweet
Corn Festival in April,
a backcountry ski and

named after that
particular gritty feel the
snow takes on in late
winter (or is it early
spring?). We promise,
you won’t forget it. Or
if sleds are your thing,
rent snowmobiles right in Cooke
and hit the 60 miles of groomed trails,
like unforgettable Daisy Pass at 10,000’
where you’re greeted with unparalleled
views into Yellowstone and across the
Beartooths. Snowmobiling around
Cooke City runs from November
through May and even June, some years,
so make your plans now.
And if you are visiting in the summer,
there’s no end of adventure waiting for
you. Bordered by three National Forests

up for fishing, hiking,
biking, boating, horseback
riding, camping or just
lazing, ask around in town
for the destination that’ll
best suit your time and

Cooke City Prospectors found
gold in 1870, and by 1883 the quickly
booming town laid claim to more than
230 people who were able to keep the
two smelters, two sawmills, three general
stores, two hotels, two livery stables and
a local meat market busy. At one point,
Cooke City was said to have as many as
a thousand inhabitants.

was north of Gardiner, Montana
which required travel through
Yellowstone National Park.
It was probably this talk of gold
that piqued railroad financier
Jay Cooke’s interest in building a
railroad to the area. He pushed for
a bill that would open up access to
the northern edge of the Park, but
Congress wouldn’t budge. When
that attempt failed, Cooke turned
his attention toward making the
proposed Red Lodge-Cooke City
route a reality.
But what was the big draw? The
mountains surrounding Cooke are
exceptionally rich in mineral deposits:
Stories of gold, silver, lead, copper and
zinc drew adventurers from far and wide
to this remote corner of Montana. But
shipping the ore was always a problem,
often costing more than the value of the
ore itself. Until the completion of the
Beartooth Highway, the nearest railhead
Many of the silver mines went
bust in the early ‘30s when silver
values dropped, but several of the
original gold mines remained in fitful
production through the 1990s.
So when you’re booking your trip, plan a
few extra days for Cooke City and Silver
Gate. Because year-round, they keep the
Welcome Mat out for those of us in need
of some high-country adventure.
