Pontiac Convention Center Hosts Long-Running Janesville
Mid-Winter Antiques Show
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Two great primitive finds
from Brown’s Antiques: the wainscot pine cupboard with
pull-put bin priced at $395, the fancy-legged dough bin in
old blue paint at $450. 608-756-2152
The beautiful Pontiac Convention Center in Janesville,
Wisconsin once again played host to one of the Badger
State’s longest-running antiques events: The Janesville
Mid-Winter Antiques Show. More than thirty-five quality
dealers filled the hall with an interesting mix of everything
from antique toys to vintage sporting collectibles, and everything in between. Veteran show promoter Steve Bina runs the
event, and the show is in good hands with him - as he’s been
organizing successful Midwest antiques events for many
years. Big crowds - and good sales - were the rule on both
days of this venerable two-day show.

many of the most respected antiques dealers in the
Midwest will bring their fresh-to-market wares to
Waukesha for the 39th consecutive Winter Wisconsin
Antiques Dealers Association Show & Sale.
Authenticity, condition and rarity are the guidelines for
merchandise exhibited at this 2-day event by the 59 carefully-chosen antiques professionals.
Exhibitors in this renown show typically save their best
merchandise to sell at this event where savvy antiques
buyers have come to expect the unusual at fair prices. A
sampling of offerings of which we are aware:

continually-functioning State antiques
organization in America. Their not-forprofit group is dedicated to preserving
Wisconsin’s heritage and to providing
ongoing education for their dealers and
the general public – thus their free
exhibit, "Man's Best Friend", a display
of antique dog-related items representing
30+ years of collecting by a Greenfield,
Wisconsin resident.
The Waukesha County Expo
Center’s Forum Building, 1000 Northview
Road, Waukesha, WI 53188, is the home of this event.

Big Crowds, Big Fun, at 37th Annual Janesville
Mid-Winter Antiques Show
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
Well, it doesn’t seem to matter what the weather’s like, or what the economy’s like
either. Good, bad, up, or down, there always seems to be big crowds for the Badger
State’s first antiques event of the year – the Janesville Mid-Winter Antiques Show.
And sure enough, I found dozens of antiquers lined up on Saturday morning at the
entrance to the Pontiac Convention Center, host of the show.
An hour later, the hall was packed with shoppers. For its first three decades, the
Janesville Antiques show was your traditional shopping mall antiques show. It had
long been held at the Janesville Mall, just a stone’s throw away from its current location. But times change; and for the past five years the show has made its home at this
new 10,000 square-foot facility. Extensive regional advertising, including a large
direct-mail campaign, have insured the show’s continued success.
And inside the show itself, you’ll find dealers coming from near & far with quality pieces in pretty near every category of collecting. Toy enthusiasts found gems all
over the hall, examples including a mint-in-box J. Chein “Walking U.S. Army
Sergeant” at Out on the Farm Antiques, and some great early flywheel-powered
Clark tin toys at J. W. Antiques.
Some of the area’s best period furniture purveyors came as well. Primitives were
the focus at Brown’s Antiques, where I found everything from a fancy-legged dough
From Old Glory Antiques, a massive restored
maple woodworker’s bench, the surface measuring 85” x 32” - $1,865. 608-481-3131
bin in old blue paint to a jumbo wooden sugar barrel a full 2’ in diameter. More furniture finds awaited right next door at Old Glory Antiques, who brought a massive
restored maple woodworker’s bench, plus a stylish 1920s Seller’s Art Deco kitchen
cabinet in a crisp black & white finish.
Sporting collectibles more your thing? Kitchen Antiques always has a huge assortment of sports memorabilia from every era. At the nearby Serendipity Antiques &
Uniques sat some nice Mason mallard decoys, and a vintage collection of Wisconsinfound arrowheads on an arrowhead-shaped frame. Lyn’s Antiques continued the
sporting theme with a nice group of fishing lures, from old ice fishing decoys to a
near-mint 1930s Heddon Flap-Tail lure.
The fairer sex found plenty to love at Janesville too. Fine jewelry was the focus at
Sunshine Treasures, where shoppers found examples from the Victorian era through
the 1950s. Times Treasures selection of period jewelry was just as impressive, especially a just acquired collection of vintage Bakelite jewelry that included some superchunky carved bracelets.
I hope the photos give you a small idea of what the three-dozen dealers had to offer.
Thanks again to Steve Bina, promoter of the Janesville Mid-Winter Antique Show,
for inviting me out to the event. For more information about the show just give Steve
a call at 608-385-3598. And as always, keep an eye out for next year’s Janesville
Mid-winter Antiques Show in the Auction Action Antique News!

The history of quilts, their makers, and
usage is an important part of our country's
heritage presented here in full detail through
330 vintage photographs. Books on quilt
history have, to date, included only a few
photos of quilts. This in-depth collection, most of which has never been seen before,
date from 1855 to 1955. Each vivid image provides commentary on quilting
specifics, photography, costume, and American cultural history, especially toward
the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Photographic formats and a glossary of
quilting terms are included to aid the reader in dating their own vintage photographs. This book is a wonderful resource for all quilters, historians, and photographers.

Excitement Building For 11th
Annual Antique Sporting
Collectible Show
This annual event held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin is gaining a lot of popularity with
both collectors and dealers. The Oshkosh Sunnyview Expo Center is an ideal location for
this show. The modern facility is spacious, bright and clean. It is an easy drive from all
of the major cities, with easy access off Highway 41. There are acres of lighted and paved
parking.
"At this time we are looking at around 125 dealers with about 350 tables" states
organizer Dennis Gauger. The contracts have been signed, with the show to be held the
1st weekend in February through the year 2018. We feel it is important to remain consistent. Each year the show will be held the same time (1st weekend in February), the same
place (Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin) and the same hours Saturday,
from 9-4 and Sunday from 9-2.
The first weekend in February is a prime date for the show to be held. It is a sure
cure for "Cabin Fever", which its just about then. We are fortunate to have many fine reputable dealers that assist in the promotion of the show each year.
Each year there is more merchandise suitable for the novice collectors. We also
have many items that the general public bring in for appraisal or to sell the weekend of
the show. There is an amazing number and type of items that will be bought and sold
including, Decoys, Fishing and Hunting Antiques, Traps, Indian Artifacts, Wildlife
Mounts, Early Advertising, Baseball and Football memorabilia, Military Items, Carvings,
Wildlife Art, Archery, Outdoor Books and Literature, Knives, Golfing Items and so Much
More!
Due to the quantity of merchandise, Friday is dealer set-up fay. Some of the dealers with larger inventory can drive right into the building for unloading. Friday is also an
opportunity for a lot of networking among dealers who will be too busy during show
hours because of the heavy show traffic. we are starting to attract dealers from neighboring states due to the continued success of the show and the low cost of lodging and fine
restaurants in close proximity to the Expo center. Each year there will be new promotions.
Live Saturday morning radio broadcast. Last Year's free Sunday morning breakfast at the
Expo Center for all participating dealers and door prizes for the general public were
appreciated by all and will be continued again this year. Dealer fees will remain the same
low and the general admission for the public will remain the same at $5.00. Children will
be admitted free to encourage young people to participate and start collecting got themselves. Sunday is "Ladies Day" with Free Admission for the women.
Food Service will again be on site. In addition there will be 24 hour security and
surveillance cameras. Show hours are Saturday, February 2nd from 9-4 and Sunday,
February 3rd from 9-2. Dealer Set-up Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday and
Sunday at 7AM. Expo Center directions: just north of Oshkosh, Wisconsin off Highway
41 (Exit 124) Jackson St.

Rummage-A-Rama!
Is The Place To Be This Weekend!
New sellers, warmer weather, and plenty of peanut butter.
MILWAUKEE, WI – Rummage-A-Rama! promises plenty of variety this
weekend: January 26th from 9AM to 5PM and the 27th from 9AM to 4PM at the
State Fair Park Wisconsin Products Pavilion.
Rummage-A-Rama! Owner and Producer Tim Gill is looking forward to a
successful weekend. “It’s been a month since Christmas and people are ready to shop
again. And I’m no weatherman, but it looks like we’ll see more inviting temperatures
than we had earlier this week,” Gill smiles. “What better way to spend a temperate
winter weekend in Milwaukee than some good, old-fashioned bargain-hunting?”
Gill says the variety at the show continues to abound. “A quarter of this
weekend’s Sellers are brand new to Rummage-A-Rama!,” he explains. “Even if you
came to our last show, there’s a whole list of new things to seek and find. Even our
returning Sellers will change up their offerings seasonally.”
To make shopping more enjoyable this weekend, Rummage-A-Rama! will provide a FREE coat check for all customers. “And if you buy something too cumbersome to
carry around, we’ll happily stow it for you until you’re ready to go,” Gill eagerly interjects, obviously passionate about creating a positive customer experience.
Admission to Rummage-A-Rama! is $4 per person, but patrons who bring a
donation of two non-perishable food items for Hunger Task Force get in for $2. The

Hunger Task Force is currently on a mission to collect 100,000 jars of peanut butter
to help meet food pantry needs this winter, and Rummage-A-Rama! customers are
encouraged to help this cause. “If each customer brings just one jar of peanut butter
this weekend, we can contribute another four or five thousand jars toward that goal,”
says Gill. Since its return in 2009, Rummage-A-Rama! has collected 68,000 pounds
of food through their “two-dollars-plus-two-cans” promotion. As always, kids age 12
and under attend Rummage-A-Rama! for FREE.
FREE parking is available for all Rummage-A-Rama! customers in the
North Lot by the Pettit National Ice Center via Gate 6; however, it requires an uphill
walk to the Wisconsin Products Pavilion. Preferred parking is available within the
park for a $5 fee, regulated by Imperial Parking, by entering Gate 5 off 84th Street.

Revised “Marble Mania”
It is our pleasure to announce the publication & availability of our table top
book, Marble Mania. The original book published in July 1998 has been out of
print & unavailable for over a year.
The revised edition contains over 240 pages & close to 1,400 illustrations.
It has a hard cover with a dust jacket & like the original, covers all of the collectible
areas of the hobby of marbles.
The various sections include: Section 1: Marbles Other Than Glass; Section
2: Early Handmade Glass Marbles; Section 3: Machine Made Marbles; Section 4:
Contemporary Marbles; Section 5: Games & Toys; Section 6: Other Uses of
Marbles. Also included are a glossary of terms, a list of marble clubs, a bibliography, & an index. In addition, each of the photos has a valuation of the item pictured
as of the time the book was written & reviewed.
This book joins the seven other marble books the Society has done over the
years. The retail price for Marble Mania is $34.99 plus $6 shipping & handling.
It is also timely to note that Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. currently has the 5th
edition of Marbles: Identification & Price Guide, 5th edition which should be available later this year.
The Marble Collectors Society of America (MCSA) was founded in 1975
as a nonprofit organization established for charitable, scientific, literary & educational purposes. Society objectives include gathering & disseminating information
as well as performing services to further the hobby of marbles, marble collecting, &
the preservation of the history of marble s& marble making.
Some of the MCSA’s major accomplishments to date are the uninterrupted
issuance of the Society’s quarterly newsletter, Marble Mania, & accompanying
Calendar of Meets, shows & auctions; various surveys; photographing & publishing
color sheets; gathering & placing museum collections, in addition to those currently
housed at The Smithsonian Institute, The Corning Museum of Glass, & the Museum of
American Glass at WheatonArts; publication of price guides with periodic updates;
ongoing work towards establishing a library of articles & marble related material; preparation & publication of contributor listings; research & issuance of articles concerning
marble factories & contemporary marble makers; publication of books dedicated to the
hobby of marble collecting; classification & appraisal services.
Finally, MCSA has been an active & vital participant in the growth & visibility of the marble field throughout its 35 year history. The Society also recognizes
its obligations as the leading voice & reporting agency for the hobby, a task taken
very seriously.
For more information on MCSA write to PO Box 222, Trumbull, CT 06611.
