Roll Call! - Pennsylvania Military Museum
Roll Call!
Friends of the Pennsylvania Military Museum
www.pamilmuseum.org Winter, 2011‐2012 To protect and preserve, for future generations, the legacy of Pennsylvanians who served in the military of the United States, and to support the Pennsylvania Military Museum and the 28th Division Memorial Shrine. Front Lines
In the last newsletter I stated that my goal for this fall was to build a firm foundation for the Friends. We’ve made significant progress toward that goal but the task is not yet complete. Thanks to the efforts by board members and staff, the Friends financial house is nearly in order. With much of the hard work in that area now behind us, we have been able to focus on other areas, such as the technology needs of the organization. Another area that needed attention was adding qualified individuals to the board. In that regard, I’m pleased to announce the addition of two new board members, John Wainright and Bruce Lingenfelter. John has been a very active member of the Boalsburg community since moving to the area in 2003 and Bruce is a returning veteran of the original Friends Board. Both are expected to bring a significant contribution to the Friends board. As we continue moving forward I can see the need to engage the broader Friends membership in board related activities that support the museum. Two activities come to mind. First, as the board seeks new ways to fund museum programs, the Fundraising Committee is seeking individuals to bring ideas and a willingness to bring those ideas to fruition. Those interested s h o u l d c o n t a c t J o h n W a i n r i g h t a t [email protected], (814) 466‐7813. Second, we are attempting to increase the size of the front desk volunteer staff, particularly for weekends. This position involves greeting museum guests, processing admissions, and handling Museum Store purchases. If interested, contact Bob Barry, [email protected], (814) 574‐
3159. We hope to hear from you soon. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Friends President’s Report Steve Schroeder, [email protected] Wednesday, December 7th, 12:45 p.m. Seventy years ago on December 7th, the US Pacific Fleet at Hawaii was attacked by aircraft from the Imperial Japanese Navy, and America was at war. This event will be remembered on the museum grounds in a tribute beneath the guns of the battleship USS Pennsylvania, which was a participant in that attack. USS Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 T h e U S S P e n n s y l v a n i a is rarely mentioned in any reference to Pearl Harbor (24 men killed, 14 missing in action, and 38 men wounded) or her gallant actions in the Pacific. She was one of the first to return fire at Pearl Harbor and survived to deliver incredible fire power on enemy positions for the next 4 years. Feared by the Japanese, she fired more rounds than any other ship Naval history. Interim Site Administrator’s Report Joe Horvath, [email protected]
It is with confounded pride that I once again take the reins of command while Chuck Smith is TAD (temporary additional duty) to Old Economy. It is said that he will be home by Christmas. But of course the boys in the trenches said that in the Fall of 1914, and the boys in the Ardennes said that in early December of 1944. In addition to this move, our Clerk Typist, LaCrisha Fye, has accepted a full time position with Corrections at Rockview. We wish her the best. She was a good part of the team and will be a great benefit to our sister agency down the road. Earlier this month, First Lady Susan Corbett honored Pennsylvania's military men and women by touring the Pennsylvania Military Museum for Veteran’s Day. She commented, “It is an honor to recognize the sacrifices that Pennsylvania service men and women make to keep our citizens safe.” The Pennsylvania Military Museum is part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Commission's Pennsylvania Trails of Corbett visits with Marine veteran History. The First Lady's tour of the and PMM Friend Bill Loop during museum kicked off her role as her stop at the museum on Pennsylvania's "First Tourist." Mrs. Veteran’s Day, November 11. Corbett will work with the Department of Community and Economic Development to promote Pennsylvania's diverse tourism industry. Learn more about Pennsylvania tourism at www.visitpa.com. Those of us left behind (Building Maintenance Foreman Jason Cressman, MR2 Wyatt Walker) make do to the best of our collective abilities. I am always amazed at the opportunity for challenges that exist within the PHMC. I’d like to express my gratitude to the Front Desk volunteer force of David Heiliger, John Wainright and Bob Barry for allowing me time to administer the museum from my office rather than the front desk. Thank you! Those of you walking the grounds will notice some changes in the landscape architecture. A new monument to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT) of the PA National Guard is being constructed beside the walking path in front of the museum and the Asher Minor 77mm German artillery piece will be removed for conservation. The dedication of the 2nd BCT will most likely be in the spring. We’ve had plenty of kids’ initiatives in 2011 (see INSIDE VIEW, page 8) —Ralph Waldo Emerson
