Chris and Katie Stuart, who recently took over the West
Monkseaton fish and chip shop, Monk Fisheries, added a
second business to their foodie empire when they recently
re-launched Deli 13.
The new venture brings their investment into the region’s food
scene to over £100,000 and the re-opening of Deli 13, which is
next door to Monk Fisheries on Seatonville Road, secured three
jobs and has the potential to create more.

A wealth of business experience has been appointed to
the Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade.
Julie Summers has been appointed chairman; Sarah Clough,
duty manager at the Windsor Hotel, as vice-chair; and Kelly
Oliver Dougall, owner of Cygnet Careers, as secretary. Jim
Morrison remains membership secretary and June Tolson as
treasurer.
Julie, owner of Olives at the Station with her husband Martin,
said: “I am delighted to have been elected as Chair. I am
passionate both as a resident and business owner and aim
to build on the Chamber’s foundations by encouraging new
members and facilitating social opportunities.”
When an apprentice is an ambassador too!
Kier North Tyneside is training its current apprentices to be
construction ambassadors.
A total of 11 Kier North Tyneside apprentices have attended
a Construction Industry Training Board course to equip them
with the skills they need to help inspire potential new entrants
choose a career in the construction industry.
Kier North Tyneside learning & development
consultant, Andi Gibson, explains: “As newcomers to
the industry at the early stage of their careers, our
apprentices are best placed to act as construction
ambassadors.
“There are some fantastic local opportunities for
young people within Kier and the wider industry,
and we know that talking to young apprentices,
who potential new entrants can identify with and
relate to, about their experiences in the industry
really helps open their eyes to the many varied
career paths you can have in construction.”
Business administration apprentice Lewis Biggs,
who attended the course, said: “I’ve been an
apprentice with Kier North Tyneside for six months
and I’m really enjoying the experience of working

Already known for its fresh food made with local ingredients,
over the next 12 months the couple aims to add a larger
dine-in area and will launch an outside catering arm and food
delivery service. Chris Stuart said: “Both businesses have a really great
reputation with the local community and we want to
continue to build on this. Our main values are based heavily
on esteemed customer service and attention to detail –
something so often sacrificed in a quick-service environment.
After taking over Monk Fisheries in autumn 2014 for £75,000,
Chris and Katie invested a further £6,000 in refurbishing the

Spotlight on Showbiz 2016
Showbiz 2016 took place on Friday 18
March, at TyneMet College and this
ever popular event was attended by
well over a hundred local businesses.
Following reception coffee at 8:30am; the
show commenced with a series of quick fire
information sessions from the experts giving
the condensed, critical details on business
topics impacting business in the forthcoming
year including the minimum and living
wage from ACAS, workplace pensions from
The Pensions Regulator, and an economic
forecast for 2016 from the Bank of England.
These presenters went on to join a raft of
other exhibitors offering advice and support
on areas including promotion, funding,
marketing, training and employment support
at the integral exhibition.
Showbiz 2016 also featured two exceptional
keynote speakers, Lee Gardener and Nigel
Risner, who inspired attendees by sharing
tips for boosting business health and
performance. Lee drew on his experiences as
a commando to link the guiding principles of
the Royal Marines to success in day to day
business life, while Nigel challenged
listeners to expand their horizons and
dare to dream of achievements which
might seem impossible.
All this excitement was served up with
a gourmet buffet lunch, courtesy of
TyneMet’s professional catering team
and there was plenty of opportunities for
networking too! Speaking about the event
Ruth Guest from Guest Wines said: “The
event was an excellent way of learning
business updates and meeting other
businesses I wouldn’t usually meet”. Joy Gair
from Northumberland Business Services
added “What an amazing morning! Well
worth the time to attend”

Innovative
solutions scoop
the double
Helping people in need this winter
Multi Packaging Solutions swept the board at the
2015 North Tyneside Business Awards scooping
both the North Tyneside Business of the Year Award
and the Innovation Award.
MPS were up against stiff competition; so what set them apart?
The company have been in the region for 90 years and has a passion
for keeping jobs, skills and manufacturing in the North East. Starting
out as Cut Out Cartons Limited in 1922 it has undergone many a
change in ownership, name and location before finally settling in
Station Road Killingworth 52 years ago. Here the company designs,
creates and manufacturers high quality oriented packaging solutions
for prestigious brands including Nestle, Cadbury, Lindt, Walkers and
Marks and Spencer
Knowing how difficult it can be to find work, MPS always ensures
that, should anyone leave or retire, a permanent role is offered to a
temporary worker who has proved capable of doing the job. During
2015, 14 people have secured permanent employment in this way.
General manager Vicky Brockley comments: “What makes us
different is our workforce. Despite the huge amount of change this
site has been through, and continues to go through, the workforce
always looks to support new ways of working and how we can do
things differently.
“Our success at the Business Awards was a testament to all their
hard work and I could not be more proud of them.”
Thanks to the work of Sector Connector, Chambers Chiropody has
become involved with the North Tyneside Winter Support Network.
The initative, led by North Tyneside VODA, undertakes practical
projects to help prevent unplanned winter admissions to hospital
among the elderly or vulnerable.
Carol Chambers, owner of Chambers Chiropody said: “I think the
Winter Support Network is providing a really valuable service. I’m
proud that my business can do its bit to help vulnerable people at
this time of year.”

Network contact Ian Dougall on 0191 6432638 or email ian.

Top 10 traits of successful people
Nigel Risner, author and television presenter, tells all.
“We have all read about people who
are successful briefly. They win a gold
medal, make a fortune, or star in one
great movie … and then disappear. Or,
there are those like Marilyn Monroe
and Howard Hughes who achieve
extraordinary success, at the cost of
their own lives. These examples do not
inspire me!
My focus and fascination is with people who seem to do well in
many areas of life, and do it over again throughout a lifetime. In
entertainment, I think of Paul Newman and Bill Cosby. In business, I
think of Ben and Jerry (the ice cream moguls), and a local hardware
store owner who is famous for the money he’s given to children’s
charities.
Whitley Bay Clinic, which provides highly effective treatments
for a wide variety of conditions and injuries, is growing in the old
fashioned way; by doing a really good job and relying on word of
mouth to spread the message. As a result they have a blossoming
caseload of patients and are looking to recruit more staff to meet
the growing demand this year.
These are the people who inspire me! I’ve studied them, and I’ve
noticed they have the following traits in common:
The clinic was launched in November 2014 by Lisa Crowther and is
able to provide patient appointments outside the normal working
week. Indeed a recent Supple Saturday event was inundated with
requests from patients unable to attend on other days.
1. They work hard and play hard! They get up early, rarely
complain, expect performance from others, but expect
extraordinary performance from themselves.
2. They are curious and eager to learn. They study, ask questions,
read constantly and apply or take advantage of what they
learn.
Winner of the North Tyneside New Business Award 2015, Whitley
Bay Clinic has also been recognised as a provider of excellent
healthcare by BUPA and other medical insurance companies and
Lisa has forged fantastic links with a number of local gyms and
sports clubs including Rockliffe Rugby Club.
Whitley Bay Clinic is located on 45a Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay.

A chiropody company is one of a
number of organisations helping
people in need over winter.
3. They network; listen to everyone. They know lots of different
kinds of people who value their friendship and return their
calls.

4. They work on themselves and never quit! They don’t tolerate
flaws, they fix them! They work on their personality, leadership,
management and every other detail of life.
5. They are extraordinarily creative. They ask “why not?” and see
possibilities where others see problems.
6. They are self-reliant and take responsibility. They don’t worry
about blame and don’t waste time complaining. They make
decisions and move on.
7. They are usually relaxed and keep their perspective. Even in
times of stress they keep their balance, rarely panic or make
decisions on impulse.
8. They live in the present. They know NOW is the only time
they can control. They take full advantage of each day and get
a lot done!
9. They “look over the horizon” to see the future; they observe
trends, notice changes, see shifts, and hear the nuances that
others miss.
10. They respond instantly; when they see an opportunity they are
always the quickest to make the call.
These traits work together, giving repeatedly successful people a
huge advantage. Because they are insatiable learners, they can
respond wisely to change. Because their personal relationships are
strong, they have good advisors, and a reserve of goodwill when
things go bad. And finally, none of these traits are genetic! They
can be learned. They are free and they are skills you can use. Start
now!

Taking a tea break at Spicers
A group of North Tyneside business leaders took a teatasting tour recently as part of a series of learning safari
visits to local manufacturers.
Tea producer Keith Spicer Ltd of North Shields opened its
doors to welcome the visitors for a guided tour around
the factory to demonstrate exactly what goes into the
production of some of our favourite brands. Plant Manager
Chris Stocker explained the company’s history - founded in
1934 by 24-year old Keith Spicer, it has grown to become a
major supplier of tea to the hotel and catering industries as
well as leading supermarkets. Picture Caption : Tea tasting at Spicers.
