A message from the Mayor
of Hammersmith & Fulham,
Councillor Charlie Treloggan
Welcome
to the Hammersmith &
Fulham Festival 2005.
This is the fourth annual
festival in the borough and
it is even bigger and better than ever.
Running from 2-17 April, the festival offers
a range of activities and events that
celebrate the local community and culture.
Young and old alike will be able to enjoy
the very best of the borough’s theatre,
cinema, comedy, music, art, food, sports
and much more. There are also special
offers just for borough residents, including
many events that are absolutely free.
The festival would not be possible without
the support of local businesses, charities,
thriving sports and arts scene and public
sector organisations. We would particularly
like to thank our headline sponsors,
Hammersmith Broadway Shopping Centre,
and west12 Shopping Centre. We hope
you’ll enjoy the festival and join us in
celebrating all the vibrant and multicultural
opportunities in the borough.

regularly.
The Broadway Shopping
Centre hopes that while you’re
out enjoying the festival you’ll pop
in for a coffee or a spot of retail

DisneyHand appreciates the partnership it has with the
Hammersmith & Fulham VDA and the connection to the local
community. From tutoring pupils in reading at St. Paul's Primary
School, to painting and renovation projects at local schools,
parks and day care centres, to 'adopting' clean ups along the
foreshore of the River Thames, and providing thousands of toys
and gifts each year for the VDA Christmas Drive.

communityspirit
Let the spirit move you!
Each year, Hammersmith & Fulham
Festival unites the best cultural,
educational and arts entertainment that
the borough has to offer. Events are a
held throughout the borough and are
fantastic opportunity to experience the
best of what’s going on your doorstep.
Community Spirit is a one off event
which has become one of the high
points of the Festival, showcasing local
organisations, community groups such
as the BBC, Macmillan Cancer Trust,
Mayhew Animal Home and the Upper
Room, to name just a few.
For those of you who are looking for
more of a thrill, there will also be live
music, singing and dancing. There is
face painting, henna (hand) painting
and an art workshop for the younger
ones. And, for anyone who wants to
learn something a little bit different,
head wrapping, Ayurvedic medicine
and Chinese acupuncture are also
opportunities not to be missed.
So, if you want to know more about
the borough you live in, and are free
on Saturday, 9 April, turn up at
the Kings Mall, King Street,
Hammersmith 11.00am - 4.00pm,
and let the spirit move you!

HAMMERSMITH
& FULHAM
VOLUNTEER
DEVELOPMENT
AGENCY
Improve yourself and your community!
Want to get involved in the community and help others?
Want to gain experience or skills while you look for work?
T
he Hammersmith & Fulham
Volunteer Development Agency
(HFVDA) is a charitable
organisation that helps hundreds of
people each year to take up
volunteering, as a way to benefit
themselves and those around them.
Based at 130 King Street, Hammersmith,
the HFVDA works with local residents
and local businesses, finding them the
most suitable voluntary work available.
For businesses, this might mean a oneday ‘challenge’ at a local community
venue such as a school, nursery, river
clean up or a park. In the past two years
employees from Disney, Barclays Bank,
Express by Holiday Inn, Diageo,
HarperCollins, Starwood Hotels and
Fulham Football Club have all
participated in volunteering challenges
through the HFVDA, strengthening their
ties to the community and building up a
sense of team spirit.
For residents wishing to volunteer, the
HFVDA organises regular voluntary work
with worthy local causes - while those
who are already involved in a charity or
group, and want to do more, can get
training through the Active Citizen
project.
40
The HFVDA also arranges work
placements for people who are
unemployed or underemployed, giving
them the chance to experience being
back in an office environment and to
add new skills to their CV.
Amar Alzayady had been out of work
for over six months when the HFVDA
found him a four-month placement at
Shepherds Bush Housing Association.
“I really improved my I.T. and
communication skills,” he says,
“and when a vacancy came up at the
Family Housing Association,
I applied and got the job. It’s all
thanks to the HFVDA; they opened
the door for me to improve my
chances of finding work.”
“The HFVDA is a strategic
organisation which is greatly
interested in reducing social exclusion
in our borough”, says Marion
Schumann, Director, “one of the
ways of doing this is to bring all
relevant players together for the
Hammersmith & Fulham Festival.”
We wish the H&F Festival success.

MAMMALS 6 April - 7 May
By Amelia Bullmore. Directed by Anna Mackmin
Jane and Kev Hammersby don’t have
secrets. When Kev comes home from a
business trip with something on his
mind, the truth will out, despite a
house full of over-excited children, dirty
laundry and the early arrival of their
weekend guests. Mammals is a darkly
humorous look at the flip side of
home-sweet-home.
Mammals is Amelia
Bullmore’s first stage
play. After a successful
career as an actress, she
began writing in 1995
and has written episodes of This Life,
Black Cab (which she devised) and
Attachments (all for BBC2).
