Bk.PAD fest prog 05 5/3/05 5:30 pm Page 3 A message from the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Councillor Charlie Treloggan Welcome to the Hammersmith & Fulham Festival 2005. This is the fourth annual festival in the borough and it is even bigger and better than ever. Running from 2-17 April, the festival offers a range of activities and events that celebrate the local community and culture. Young and old alike will be able to enjoy the very best of the borough’s theatre, cinema, comedy, music, art, food, sports and much more. There are also special offers just for borough residents, including many events that are absolutely free. The festival would not be possible without the support of local businesses, charities, thriving sports and arts scene and public sector organisations. We would particularly like to thank our headline sponsors, Hammersmith Broadway Shopping Centre, and west12 Shopping Centre. We hope you’ll enjoy the festival and join us in celebrating all the vibrant and multicultural opportunities in the borough. contents Eddi Reader 3 NDC 4 Masbro centre 6 Events listing Sat 2 - Thurs 7 April 9 Festival offers 16 Sands End open day 18 BBC Comedy night 19 Programme summary 21 Libraries & archives 25 Community Spirit 24 Urban Creators 28 Events listing Friday 8 - Sunday 17 April 29 Ginglik 38 Aurelia’s Oratorio 39 Mini Olympics 42 Hippity Hop 43 Mammals 44 ON THE WEB See up-to-the-minute festival information and offers on the official website www.lbhf.gov.uk/festival. 1 Bk.PAD fest prog 05 5/3/05 5:30 pm Page 4 The Festival is brought to you by the council with headline sponsorship from The Broadway Shopping Centre. Want to get involved in the community and help others? Want to gain experience or skills while you look for work? T he Hammersmith & Fulham Volunteer Development Agency (HFVDA) is a charitable organisation that helps hundreds of people each year to take up volunteering, as a way to benefit themselves and those around them. Based at 130 King Street, Hammersmith, the HFVDA works with local residents and local businesses, finding them the most suitable voluntary work available. For businesses, this might mean a oneday ‘challenge’ at a local community venue such as a school, nursery, river clean up or a park. In the past two years employees from Disney, Barclays Bank, Express by Holiday Inn, Diageo, HarperCollins, Starwood Hotels and Fulham Football Club have all participated in volunteering challenges through the HFVDA, strengthening their ties to the community and building up a sense of team spirit. For residents wishing to volunteer, the HFVDA organises regular voluntary work with worthy local causes - while those who are already involved in a charity or group, and want to do more, can get training through the Active Citizen project. 40 The HFVDA also arranges work placements for people who are unemployed or underemployed, giving them the chance to experience being back in an office environment and to add new skills to their CV. Amar Alzayady had been out of work for over six months when the HFVDA found him a four-month placement at Shepherds Bush Housing Association. “I really improved my I.T. and communication skills,” he says, “and when a vacancy came up at the Family Housing Association, I applied and got the job. It’s all thanks to the HFVDA; they opened the door for me to improve my chances of finding work.” “The HFVDA is a strategic organisation which is greatly interested in reducing social exclusion in our borough”, says Marion Schumann, Director, “one of the ways of doing this is to bring all relevant players together for the Hammersmith & Fulham Festival.” We wish the H&F Festival success.
