Pontifical Collection
for the Holy Land
Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy
Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds
and prayers are also aware of the Holy
Land. Once a year we are called on to
support Christians in the Holy Land.
Franciscans and others in the Holy
Land are housing and feeding the poor,
providing religious formation and education, and maintaining shrines and
parishes. Please use the envelope in
your packet and drop it off in any Sunday collection basket during Lent. We
will not take up a collection on Good
Friday in reverence for this most Holy
Day. Please visit www.MyFranciscan.
org. Thanks for your generosity.
Upcoming Opportunity for
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Extended Reconciliation will be offered in observance of the Sunday of
Divine Mercy. Please plan to take part
in this sacrament on Saturday, April 2
from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Important Notices
In observance of Holy Saturday, the
Parish Office will be closed on March
26. There will be no 5:00 p.m. Mass on
Holy Saturday or on Easter Sunday.
MERCY
Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna!
When Jesus entered into Jerusalem, He
did so to great adulation. Everyone turned
out for the event, joining in all the festivities.
Hosanna!
Yet, by the end of His time in Jerusalem, it all
Hosanna!
seemed to have gone wrong. And in the final
Hosanna!
moments, only a very few stood with Jesus as
He died.
When is the last time you so enthusiastically
looked forward to spending time with your
Lord and Savior in the midst of the community with the same
excitement that you have when you’ve gathered for a big sports
event, a gala or a concert? What is it that often makes you hide from
living your relationship with Jesus Christ publicly?
Do you ever stop to wonder whether, in the final moment of your
life, if Jesus will find you standing with Him or if you will have been
off “doing your own thing” then too?

Our Easter Garden of Everlasting Life
As a way to express our belief in the everlasting life that Easter
promises, you are invited to contribute in the memory of a loved
one (or in honor of someone living) towards the Easter flowers that
will grace our worship space during the Easter Season. The flowers
will not just be decoration, but a true garden of life representing
those loved ones who are no longer with us. Envelopes for this can
be found on the tables in the back of church or in your packet. Simply drop it in the collection basket or send it to the parish office.
Blessing of Easter Food
at 11:00 a.m. on Holy Saturday
In many Eastern European countries, it is a tradition to have a basket of food
blessed on Holy Saturday. In Poland, blessing of the baskets is known as święcenie
pokarmow wiełkanocnych, a practice dating to the 15th century or earlier, and
one which is still maintained by most families in Poland on Holy Saturday. The
St. Joseph Traditional Blessing of the Easter Baskets will take place next week on
Holy Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with a short prayer service. Please join us!

St. Joseph Catholic Church
–—––––——————––——––Faith Formation
March 13, 2016
Dear Parishioner,
Throughout the last two years, our school community has seen much growth: in the programs offered,
in the resources used, in service outreach from our students, and in enrollment. As our community continues to grow, and as we reflect on our 90 years of spiritual formation and academic excellence, St. Joseph
Catholic School is at a key point in our development. We need to continue to deliver exceptional spiritual and
academic programs while planning for our future.
In order to maintain the mindset of continuous improvement while planning for our future, St. Joseph Catholic School is in
the process of creating a Long-Range Strategic Plan. Driven by the vision of students, staff, parents, parishioners, and community members, a Long-Range Strategic Plan will result in a common purpose, a common sense of direction, priorities for
change, and a blueprint for action. It will also help us recognize traditions and values that we want to see maintained.
As we move forward with our Long-Range Strategic Plan, we are asking all staff, parents, a random sample of students,
parishioners, and community members to participate in an online survey. This survey focuses around six key areas: Catholic
Identity, Curriculum and Academics, Finance and Fundraising, Technology, Facilities and Grounds, and Marketing and Enrollment. To complete the survey, which should take about 15 minutes, please visit our school website (www.sjscatholic.org).
A link to the survey will be on the homepage under “Latest News”. The survey will close on March 28.
In addition to giving your input via the online survey, we invite you to participate as a member of our Long-Range Strategic
Planning team on May 18 and 19 from 6:00-9:30 p.m. in the Koenig Center. Participation entails providing input and direction regarding the future of St. Joseph Catholic School in our six focus areas. If you wish to serve on a focus group, please visit
our homepage under “Latest News” by April 1 to indicate your desire. Please also indicate on which subgroup you offer experience or feel called to serve: Catholic Identity, Curriculum and Academics, Finance and Fundraising, Technology, Facilities
and Grounds, and Marketing and Enrollment. Attendance at both evening sessions is required in order to fully collaborate on
all areas of the Long-Range Strategic Plan. (Focus group capacity is limited, and participants will receive an e-mail message
by the end of April confirming attendance.)
The Strategic Planning process can only be successful with the input of our students, staff, parents, parishioners, and community members. Thank you for taking the time to give your input via the online survey. Additionally, I want to thank you,
in advance, for consideration of serving as a member of our focus groups on the evenings of May 18 and 19. I look forward to
working with you. Together, we will continue to provide an environment where our students learn in mind, body and spirit
while also planning for our future.
Sincerely,
Anne Phoenix

Register Now for Totus Tuus –“Totally Yours”
June 27 - July 1 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
A Camp at Church? Absolutely! Register now for the best
week of the summer! Kids have fun learning and living our
Catholic faith in this week-long “Catholic Camp” for kids
entering the 2nd through 8th grade. Totus Tuus is taught
by college students and seminarians who were trained in
teaching and passing on their excitement about Catholicism. Last summer, kids unanimously gave a thumbs-up to the games, skits, and active way to grow in faith. Camp will focus
on the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary and Prayer this summer.
Not convinced? Read what parents from our parish said last summer:
• “It was wonderful to have my daughter be immersed in faith-building activities that were fun, and I loved that she went to mass
daily.”
• “My child comes home glowing with the Holy Spirit!”
• “I can’t believe my 4th and 6th graders would not stop singing the songs after they got home. They were eager to attend every day.”
• “Totus Tuus program is great. Skits and songs make for fun, relaxed learnings (vs. more serious classroom-style lessons); daily
string bracelets are a great reminder of lessons.”
• “Taking part in a religious program for the week was a tough sell to my 3rd grader daughter, but she ended up loving the camp!”
And what did the campers say about Totus Tuus last summer?
• “I like regular camp and religion camp the same... can my brother do religion camp with me next year?"
• “The songs and skits and learning are fun. Mr. Aaron (Seminarian) is awesome.”
• “This program brought me closer to God and my faith. Amazing counselors—Mr. Aaron was awesome!”
• “Skits were very original; that made them cool.”
• “Songs were silly and fun but still taught us about our religion.”
Totus Tuus registration fee is $60.00 each for the 1st and 2nd child in a family, and $20 for each subsequent child. The
price includes a T-shirt.
Totus Tuus is an engaging way to inspire children while instructing them in the basic beliefs of the Catholic faith. It’s fun to
be Catholic! Register at http://www.stjoseph-libertyville.org/summer-programs. Visit our Give Central page at https://goo.gl/

• Men’s CRHP Weekend, April 23-24
• Men’s Annual Retreat Weekend, June 25-26.
More details to follow.
Sponsored by The Men’s Ministry
of St. Joseph Parish
Join us for “The Men’s Weekend”
Are you new to St. Joe’s Parish and looking to connect?
Have you been here a while and realize that you don’t know
anyone? Are you looking for someone or something within
this very large community? Who is in your circle? What is
the legacy you hope to leave behind?
The Men’s Weekend is April 23 and 24. It is built for men
of heart, humor and thoughtfulness—it is for men who are
looking for a place to ask good questions (like these) in great
company.
There are no prerequisites for you to attend. You just
need to be a guy who maybe is looking for a little “more.”
There is no “Bible thumping,” no preaching and no lecturing. There are no assignments and no expectations. We learn
from one another. We get comfortable. We have some fun.
We relax and we eat well.
The Men’s Weekend helps us realize that we have an
enormous capacity to connect to God through each other in
a way that is unique to men. Through stories, laughter and
hospitality, we find that we can actually live vibrant spiritual
lives in a way that is comfortable to each of us. We can become better men, better husbands, fathers, grandfathers and
better members of the community. Just ask a guy who has
been there.
“The hospitality and food are off the charts, the laughs
are abundant and the friendships that are formed are honest
and real.” - Gene Maher

Pray for Vocations
The Archdiocese recommends
that parishes provide for a holy
hour to pray for priestly vocations. In support of this, the St.
Joseph Vocation Committee and
our Spiritual Formation Committee has scheduled a holy hour,
with Eucharistic Adoration, to be
held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays have been chosen as an ideal day for having the prayer hour as it coincides
with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at
the Last Supper. If you are looking for a special action this
year, what better way than a short visit on Thursday to pray for
an increase in priestly vocations? If you are unable to join us,
please keep vocations in your prayers.

Thoughts on Giving
“I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me. “ (Luke 22:34) How many times
have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about Jesus or the Catholic faith? How do you react? Do you remain
quiet not to cause a disturbance or worst yet, because you don’t want your friends or family to think negatively about you?
Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a respectful dialogue.

Walking along the Breast Cancer
Journey Begins March 31
From the time a woman receives the diagnosis, through the
treatments and, for some, reconstruction, women with breast cancer embark on a journey not of their choosing. It’s important to
look back on the journey taken. What transformation has taken
place as you’ve moved through the different stages of the journey?
Join with other women who know what it is to walk in the
steps of breast cancer, to reflect, listen, pray and share experience.
Each woman will receive a simple journal, reflection questions and
have an opportunity to share. The women will be invited to look at
the journey of breast cancer through the symbol of a pilgrimage.
We will meet on Thursday evenings beginning March 31 at 7:00
p.m. in Meeting Room 1 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish
in northwest Mundelein/Fremont Center. The meeting dates are:
March 31, April 7, 14, 38, May 5 and 12.
The group will be facilitated by Catherine Sims, M. Div. To register, please contact Catherine at [email protected],
or you can go to SignUpGenius to register at www.SignUpGenius.

Breaking Open the Word
A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture
1. Proclaim God’s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence.
2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way.
3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be.
Next Sunday’s Gospel — John 20: 1-9
Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the
tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw
the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to
Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and
told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we
don’t know where they put him.”
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the
tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than
Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the
Response: Glory to You, O Lord
burial cloths there, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the
tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had
covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in
a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one
who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.
For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to
rise from the dead.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Reflection
Next Sunday’s Easter Gospel signals the end of our Lenten journey. During Holy Week, we have the opportunity to bring
our Lenten practices to the foot of the cross so as to be better prepared to fully and joyfully celebrate the Resurrection. In
our final week of preparation, we are invited to journey along with Jesus in order to better know Him and love Him, which
will fill us with gratitude for the incomparable gift of His giving of His life for each of us. If it is helpful, you might consider
accompanying Jesus by walking in Peter’s sandals, contemplating his emotions, feelings and actions as the week transpired.
Doing so will challenge us to grow in love and thanksgiving for Jesus to the point where rather than denying Christ, we will
proudly proclaim our faith in Him on Good Friday.
For daily reflection on Jesus’ journey to the cross, read: John 12:1-11 on Monday; John 13:21-38 on Tuesday; Matthew 26:635 on Wednesday; John 13:1-20 on Thursday; John 8:1-11 to 19:1-42 on Friday; and Luke 24:1-12 on Saturday.
Reflection Questions
1. Each day contemplate what Peter might have come to learn about Christ’s love and what you can learn of the Father’s love.
2. Each day contemplate how you can respond in such a way that your faith in God and Jesus, His Son will be strengthened?
3. Each day contemplate how you can be like Peter and help to spread the good news of the life, death and resurrection of
Christ throughout the world?
