The Recreation and Culture Department would like to ensure that Oakville residents have the opportunity to access recreation and leisure services offered by the Town. To help make this possible, financial assistance is available through the Recreation Connection program. Based on total income of all family members, if you qualify you will receive an amount that can be put towards memberships or programs. Visit oakville.ca or your local community centre for more information. Seniors Services Fall 2016/Winter 2017 General Information Centre Closures Seniors Working Action Group (SWAG) September 5 – Labour Day The Seniors Working Action Group (SWAG) supports the well-being of seniors in the Town of Oakville. It meets at Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre under authority of the Department of Recreation and Culture - Town of Oakville. SWAG, The Oakville Library and CARP (Canadian Association of Retired Persons) are joining together to host a very special Presentation. Registration for seniors programs begins Friday, September 9 at 9 a.m. oakville.ca 7 General Information Policy Review Board The Policy Review Board (PRB) meets six times per year to address governance concerns and develop policies and procedures for all seniors’ centres. The PRB includes representatives from all of the centres, and the minutes of the meetings are posted at the centres. Below are some items the board has worked on over the past year: • Approving the June 2016 Articles and Bylaws • Attending meetings of the Trafalgar Park Revitalization Program • Determining the Audience Response questions asked at the Annual General Meetings held in March and reviewing the results Out-of-Town Memberships and Registered Classes Members of the Seniors Centres who live outside of Oakville do not pay an out-of-town fee for their memberships. Their membership dues are the same as those who live in Oakville. However, those members who live outside of Oakville do pay an extra $10 plus HST for each registered class in which they enroll. Oakville’s Seniors Centres and the programs they offer are supported by the tax base of Oakville. While membership is encouraged and promoted to citizens of neighbouring municipalities, Town Council’s decision to charge an out-of-town fee for classes attended by non-residents is a reflection of their overall fiscal responsibility to the citizens of Oakville. • Setting the Membership Fees for 2017 • Participating in the Age Friendly Survey Bus Tickets Feel free to contact any member of the PRB (members are listed in the minutes) if you have any questions or would like further clarification. Oakville Transit has moved to PRESTO cards. Bus tickets are no longer available for purchase at any Centre. Gail Berrigan Policy Review Board Chairperson Care-A-Van tickets must be purchased directly through Oakville Transit. Please call 905-815-2020 for further information. Defibrillators Town of Oakville facilities are equipped with portable defibrillators. All the units are mounted on the wall. At the Seniors Centres they are located near the front reception areas and the community recreation centres units are located on the walls in the lobby areas. Staff and volunteers receive ongoing training to ensure that their skills are kept current. If you are a volunteer at the Centre and would like to take a defibrillator course please let staff know or refer to the Recreation and Culture guide for class information. 8 Accessible Parking Reminder Only those with valid accessible parking stickers, etc. can use the accessible parking spaces at the Centres. Make sure your sign is clearly visible from the outside of your vehicle. And please, only one vehicle per parking space! Scent Many people have a strong reaction to perfumes and scents. Please be kind to your fellow members by being aware of this when getting ready for your activity at the Centre and perhaps foregoing that spritz of perfume before you leave home! It will be appreciated. Seniors Services Fall 2016/Winter 2017 General Information Newsletter Cover Photos and Advertising Opportunities Do you like to take photos? In order to be fair to all our participants by allowing sufficient time to choose alternate classes, staff need to make decisions about cancelling classes approximately one week prior to the start of each class. Spectacular Showcase 2016 Tickets/ Auditions The Spectacular Showcase will be on-stage in Oakville on Wednesday, December 28 and Thursday, December 29, both shows at 3 p.m. The Showcase is a cabaret-style production. “We’ll have a terrific mix of performers” says Director Vince Carlin. ”And this year we’ll have some new wrinkles: mature performers with younger ones; and something we’re calling The Academy - for those who don’t feel ready to perform solo or with a small group. They can train with others to perform as part of an ensemble. It will be a fun show for both performers and audience.” Auditions will resume in September. We invite singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, groups or any other performers who are 40 years or older to come out and audition. And there will be slots for the older/younger pairings. Contact our Associate Director, Jan Pike, for a time slot: janicepike@ymail. com, 289-259-9122. If you want to be part of The Academy (no audition needed), contact Catherine Ross at [email protected]. The show will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre’s Black Box Theatre, 2303 Bridge Road, Oakville. Tickets are $20 each and are on sale at Queen Elizabeth Park Older Adult Centre (905-815-5979), Colborne Centre (905-815-5960), or Oakville Seniors Centre (905-815-5966). For more information about the show and to see some pictures from previous performances visit our website: oakvilleshowcase.ca If you choose to register at the last minute, you run the risk of the class being full or cancelled due to low enrollment. Either way, you’ll be disappointed and in the case of low enrollment, other people could be disappointed as well. Please plan to register early for your classes – you won’t miss out on a favourite class and we won’t have to cancel classes that otherwise might have run. 10 Seniors Services Fall 2016/Winter 2017 General Information Fire Drills Tour of Lights As you enter any of the rooms at any centre, please be aware of the nearest fire exit, pull station and fire extinguisher. Make Your Move Physical Activity is important all year and the fall and winter months are no exception. Physical activity helps increase energy, helps with posture and balance, builds stronger muscles and bones, as well as helps to reduce stress. Start slowly and work your way up to 2.5 hours of physical activity a week. Find a workout buddy who will help motivate you to be active, and it also makes you more accountable knowing that someone else is counting on you to help them to stay active too. The Town of Oakville Recreation and Culture department offers a large selection of programs geared especially for seniors. Try and include a variety of physical activities that you enjoy including cardio endurance exercises such as swimming and dancing; strength and power training such as Circuit Training programs; flexibility such as Stretch It Out programs and balance such as Walking Yoga programs. Joining the centre has been a tremendous opportunity for us to get to know people and socialize and discover Oakville itself. We really love all the volunteering we do! From the reception desk, to board work, to back-up burger flipper we really enjoy the opportunity to get out of the house and meet new people. One of the main reasons I joined the Iroquois Ridge Older Adults Centre was because I was retired with time on my hands. Over the years I have volunteered for various things. I am currently a volunteer on 3 committees; Advisory, Special Events and of course the Bazaar. I have been a Greeter, a volunteer for the Friendship Luncheon on Thursdays and helped out in the kitchen at numerous events, as well as the Seniors Picnic, Open House, Family Day, BBQ, and events outside “our” Centre. I truly enjoy my time as a volunteer and enjoy all the friends I have made over the years. It’s always fun to go and talk with others to keep your mind alert and open to the changes going on around you. And, it’s nice to laugh...which we do a lot it seems. If you feel you need to do “something” as a senior, this is a good route to try and hopefully you will get back as much as you give. QEPOAC - Gail Hostrawser A volunteer - to offer or give one’s free time. January of 2016 I started to volunteer at QEP in the Older Adults Centre looking after the woodworking group, making coffee, tea, putting out cookies and cleaning up afterward. This is where I met the ladies who drop in to play Mexican Train Dominoes. I have added many more friends to my list and when I leave the OAC I feel pleased and satisfied within for I have given of myself. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others - Gandhi oakville.ca 17 Volunteering Colborne - Johanna Boffa and Catherine Ross - Sisters! Twenty-five years ago when we saw Colborne being built, our immediate reaction was: “They’ll never get us in there. It is for OLD people.” And now that we are that blessed age, we thoroughly enjoy all the good things Colborne offers – the classes and courses, the music and art, the great staff, the affordable and excellent coffee, and above all, the support and friendship of all the people we have met there since we retired. When a vacancy occurred in the library three years ago, it was a good fit for both of us. There is nothing like a perfectly alphabetized shelf of books to gladden a librarian’s heart. Also, there is the joy of book discussions with Colborne members, and receiving recommendations for “a really good read”, which we then pass on to the next reader who asks. We make a great tag team as we sort incoming books into genres: mystery hardcover and paperback, general fiction hardcover and paperback, romance and non-fiction. Jigsaw puzzles have joined the books and magazines that can be borrowed, and we are hoping to get a shelf of DVD’s going soon. And, you don’t have to keep quiet in our Library! Romac - Maria and Luis Gomes Luis first became involved at ROMAC when volunteer Peggy Black needed help to set up the carpet bowling equipment. When Peggy could no longer continue, Maria joined Luis at ROMAC and they became the Carpet Bowling Convenors. Both Maria and Luis love doing something for the centres and they feel they are really helping others. They get a lot of enjoyment with all the members who play carpet bowling. They look forward to it every week and really enjoy it!!! Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends while helping out your community. A win-win situation! If you are are interested in pursuing one of the many opportunites available please contact staff. 18 Seniors Services Fall 2016/Winter 2017 Registered Programs Seniors Services Fall 2016/Winter 2017 19 Registered Programs K Oakville Seniors’ Centre IR Iroquois Ridge Community Centre Q Queen Elizabeth Park Cultural and Community Centre C RO C Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre RO River Oaks Recreation Centre All prices include 13% HST Ancient Europe Instructor: Wolfgang Hempel For centuries Europe has been a cultural and political superpower due to its enormous diversity and adaptiveness. De Havilland Canada evolved to design and build aircraft to meet the challenges presented by our spread-out country and its harsh climate. More recently, the Dash 8 Series established the de Havilland brand as the gold standard in medium range turbo prop airliners. In late June a news release stated: The switch to the new plastic membership cards went very smoothly and most members are scanning their cards every time they come to the centre. If you still don’t have your plastic membership card, visit the reception desk and we’ll take your picture and you can start scanning! “Town Council approved moving ahead with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Town of Oakville and the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). The non-binding MOU outlines the scope and scale of a partnership between the town and the LHIN regarding the potential concept of a community health hub. Further work and analysis will be required before any binding agreement would be created for approval by Council.” The Kerr Street Senior Centre could be a possible site for such a Community Health Hub. Of course, much discussion and investigation will take place between now and when we move in 2018. Watch for more information as it becomes available. And yes, the plans are coming along and on time for the new centre. The architect and project lead have been very busy with the large picture so soon we will get to the fine details. Please speak with Karen or Maggie if you have any questions. Heads Up! Next spring /summer we will be having the Second Chance Clothing Sale so when you purge and clean out your closet, think of the centre and hang on to your gently used clothing until then. Your clothing donation will be greatly appreciated by someone. More information to come in the next newsletter. 72 oakville.ca News Garage Sale Pssst... Going, going, gone!
