General Information
Registration by drop-off, mail or by fax is
available, but we strongly encourage you to
take advantage of the online and phone options.
Dropping off a registration form early does
not guarantee confirmation in a program,
in fact dropped off forms are processed in
indiscriminate order.
To avoid disappointment and for immediate
confirmation of availability use the online or
phone registration option. For registration
inquiries phone 905-338-4250. Don’t forget
you can now register online AFTER the program
start date. But don’t wait until the last minute as
popular programs fill up fast and those with low
enrollments prior to the start date are cancelled.
Refund Policies
Programs
For program withdrawals/refunds please call
the Recreation and Culture Department at
905-338-4250 between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Monday to Friday.
Requests for withdrawals/refunds are subject
to a $10 (plus HST) administrative charge per
registrant, per transaction. You may withdraw
from classes up until the day before the third
class. After that point, only withdrawals for
medical reasons will be processed.
Refunds due to medical reasons must be
accompanied by a doctor’s note. Requests made
to program instructors or left on voice mail will
not be considered sufficient notice. Requests will
be processed as of the date official notification
is received by the Senior Centre full time staff.
These refunds will be pro-rated and are not
subject to an administration fee.
A full refund is issued for all courses cancelled by
the Recreation and Culture Department. If you
are unsure of the suitability of a particular class,
you are welcome to participate in or observe
the class near the end of the session prior to
registration. Please see a staff person if you wish
to do this. Please note there are no refunds
for membership fees.
6
Special Events
There are no refunds unless your ticket can be
sold to someone on a waiting list. There is no
immediate refund. You must allow time for
cheque processing.
Day Trips
Refunds will be issued only if your “place” is
filled by another. Due to the overwhelming
success of our day trips, there is often a waiting
list. If you are unable to attend a day trip, please
check with the Centre before selling your ticket
to a fellow centre member.
Official receipts for program registration
are sent via email. Please ensure you have
an updated email address on file and
check your email for program registration
confirmation. Paper receipts will only be
mailed to registrants who have not provided
an email on file. It is your responsibility to
ensure you are aware of your acceptance in
the program and program details (location,
time, date etc.)
If you need to update your email address,
you may do so on your on-line IRIS account,
at the Registration Department at Town Hall
or at the Seniors Centres.
A Little Assistance Goes a Long Way
Everyone should enjoy the benefits that
participation brings. The Recreation and Culture
Department would like to ensure that Oakville
residents have the opportunity to access
recreation and leisure services offered by the
Town. To help make this possible, financial
assistance is available through the Recreation
Connection program. Based on total income of
all family members, if you qualify you will receive
an amount that can be put towards memberships
or programs. Visit oakville.ca or your local
community centre for more information.

• Represent seniors on the Age Friendly
Committee with the Town of Oakville
• Advocate for quality of life and dignity in the
Oakville Community
• Provide seniors’ information to the
community
• Support and review issues of interest and
concern such as housing, health care,
transportation and recreation

General Information
Policy Review Board
The Policy Review Board (PRB) meets six times
per year to address governance concerns and
develop policies and procedures for all seniors’
centres. The PRB includes representatives from
all of the centres, and the minutes of the
meetings are posted at the centres.
Below are some items the board has worked on
over the past year:
• Approving the June 2016 Articles and Bylaws
• Attending meetings of the Trafalgar Park
Revitalization Program
• Determining the Audience Response
questions asked at the Annual General
Meetings held in March and reviewing the
results
Out-of-Town Memberships and
Registered Classes
Members of the Seniors Centres who live outside
of Oakville do not pay an out-of-town fee for
their memberships. Their membership dues are
the same as those who live in Oakville. However,
those members who live outside of Oakville do
pay an extra $10 plus HST for each registered
class in which they enroll.
Oakville’s Seniors Centres and the programs they
offer are supported by the tax base of Oakville.
While membership is encouraged and promoted
to citizens of neighbouring municipalities, Town
Council’s decision to charge an out-of-town
fee for classes attended by non-residents is a
reflection of their overall fiscal responsibility to
the citizens of Oakville.
• Setting the Membership Fees for 2017
• Participating in the Age Friendly Survey
Bus Tickets
Feel free to contact any member of the PRB
(members are listed in the minutes) if you have
any questions or would like further clarification.
Oakville Transit has moved to PRESTO cards.
Bus tickets are no longer available for purchase
at any Centre.
Gail Berrigan
Policy Review Board Chairperson
Care-A-Van tickets must be purchased directly
through Oakville Transit. Please call 905-815-2020
for further information.
Defibrillators
Town of Oakville facilities are equipped with
portable defibrillators. All the units are mounted
on the wall. At the Seniors Centres they are
located near the front reception areas and the
community recreation centres units are located
on the walls in the lobby areas. Staff and
volunteers receive ongoing training to ensure
that their skills are kept current. If you are a
volunteer at the Centre and would like to take a
defibrillator course please let staff know or refer
to the Recreation and Culture guide for class
information.

Accessible Parking Reminder
Only those with valid accessible parking stickers,
etc. can use the accessible parking spaces at the
Centres. Make sure your sign is clearly visible
from the outside of your vehicle. And please,
only one vehicle per parking space!
Scent
Many people have a strong reaction to perfumes
and scents. Please be kind to your fellow
members by being aware of this when getting
ready for your activity at the Centre and perhaps
foregoing that spritz of perfume before you leave
home! It will be appreciated.

The Rzone
What is the Rzone?
The Rzone is a zero tolerance operating
procedure that applies to all Town of Oakville
recreation and cultural centres, facilities, parks
and programs. The Rzone procedure enforces
zero tolerance of violence, vandalism and
inappropriate behaviour for participants and the
general public.
What does the Rzone mean?
The “R” in the Rzone logo stands for Respect
and Responsibility. Respect for Yourself;
Respect for Others; and Responsibility for all your
Actions. The logo will serve as a reminder to staff
and the public that the operating procedure is in
effect and applies to everyone: coaches, parents,
players, performers, audiences and visitors.

We are always receptive to comments and
suggestions, even criticism (as long as it is
constructive). Each centre has a suggestion box
for your use. Let us know what you think.
You may submit suggestions anonymously, but
if you wish to have a response or answer, you’ll
have to add your name and phone number.
The suggestions boxes are opened and reviewed

Did We Cancel Your Class?
In order to be fair to all our participants by
allowing sufficient time to choose alternate
classes, staff need to make decisions about
cancelling classes approximately one week prior
to the start of each class.
Spectacular Showcase 2016 Tickets/
Auditions
The Spectacular Showcase will be on-stage in
Oakville on Wednesday, December 28 and Thursday,
December 29, both shows at 3 p.m.
The Showcase is a cabaret-style production. “We’ll
have a terrific mix of performers” says Director
Vince Carlin. ”And this year we’ll have some new
wrinkles: mature performers with younger ones;
and something we’re calling The Academy - for
those who don’t feel ready to perform solo or with
a small group. They can train with others to perform
as part of an ensemble. It will be a fun show for
both performers and audience.”
Auditions will resume in September. We invite
singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, groups or
any other performers who are 40 years or older to
come out and audition. And there will be slots for
the older/younger pairings. Contact our Associate
Director, Jan Pike, for a time slot: janicepike@ymail.
com, 289-259-9122.
If you want to be part of The Academy (no
audition needed), contact Catherine Ross at
[email protected].
The show will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Park
Community & Cultural Centre’s Black Box Theatre,
2303 Bridge Road, Oakville.
Tickets are $20 each and are on sale at Queen
Elizabeth Park Older Adult Centre
(905-815-5979), Colborne Centre
(905-815-5960), or Oakville Seniors Centre
(905-815-5966).
For more information about the show and to see
some pictures from previous performances visit our
website: oakvilleshowcase.ca
If you choose to register at the last minute, you
run the risk of the class being full or cancelled
due to low enrollment. Either way, you’ll be
disappointed and in the case of low enrollment,
other people could be disappointed as well.
Please plan to register early for your classes
– you won’t miss out on a favourite class and
we won’t have to cancel classes that otherwise
might have run.

General Information
Fire Drills
Tour of Lights
As you enter any of the rooms at any centre,
please be aware of the nearest fire exit, pull
station and fire extinguisher. A diagram of the
nearest location of these three items is posted
just inside each room. Should you ever hear the
fire alarm ring, leave the building immediately!
The 47th Tour of Lights will be held Tuesday,
December 6, 2016. Complimentary tickets are
available to Oakville residents who might not
otherwise be able to get out and enjoy the
wonderful display of Christmas light in Oakville
on their own. Town of Oakville buses, with the
generous support of bus drivers, pick up seniors at
various stops in Oakville, take them to the Atrium at
town hall for entertainment and refreshments and
then on a tour of lights around the town.
Special lights are installed in every room at
the Centres and the lights flash when the fire
alarm rings which alerts those with hearing
impairments.
For ticket information and pick up details refer to
the special events section.
Seniors Ride Free on Mondays!
Seniors (65 years and over) can ride Oakville
Transit buses for free every Monday. No tickets,
no passes required – but please be prepared to
show proof of age. For schedule and routes,
visit oakvilletransit.ca. Take advantage of this
wonderful service and explore Oakville.
Make Your Move
Physical Activity is important all year and the fall and
winter months are no exception. Physical activity
helps increase energy, helps with posture and
balance, builds stronger muscles and bones, as well
as helps to reduce stress. Start slowly and work your
way up to 2.5 hours of physical activity a week. Find
a workout buddy who will help motivate you to
be active, and it also makes you more accountable
knowing that someone else is counting on you to
help them to stay active too.
The Town of Oakville Recreation and Culture
department offers a large selection of programs
geared especially for seniors. Try and include a
variety of physical activities that you enjoy including
cardio endurance exercises such as swimming
and dancing; strength and power training such as
Circuit Training programs; flexibility such as Stretch
It Out programs and balance such as Walking Yoga
programs.
What are you waiting for? MAKE YOUR MOVE and
get active, your way every day. For more information

Seniors Services Fall 2016/Winter 2017
Volunteering
Kerr Street - Maynard & Jackie Chen
IROAC - Karen Bond
We moved here five
years ago from Regina,
Saskatchewan to be
closer to our son, but
we didn’t know anyone.
Joining the centre has
been a tremendous
opportunity for us to get to know people and
socialize and discover Oakville itself. We really
love all the volunteering we do! From the
reception desk, to board work, to back-up burger
flipper we really enjoy the opportunity to get out
of the house and meet new people.
One of the main
reasons I joined the
Iroquois Ridge Older
Adults Centre was
because I was retired
with time on my hands.
Over the years I have
volunteered for various things. I am currently
a volunteer on 3 committees; Advisory, Special
Events and of course the Bazaar. I have been a
Greeter, a volunteer for the Friendship Luncheon
on Thursdays and helped out in the kitchen at
numerous events, as well as the Seniors Picnic,
Open House, Family Day, BBQ, and events
outside “our” Centre. I truly enjoy my time as a
volunteer and enjoy all the friends I have made
over the years. It’s always fun to go and talk with
others to keep your mind alert and open to the
changes going on around you. And, it’s nice to
laugh...which we do a lot it seems. If you feel
you need to do “something” as a senior, this is a
good route to try and hopefully you will get back
as much as you give.
QEPOAC - Gail Hostrawser
A volunteer - to offer
or give one’s free
time. January of 2016
I started to volunteer
at QEP in the Older
Adults Centre looking
after the woodworking
group, making coffee, tea, putting out cookies
and cleaning up afterward. This is where I met
the ladies who drop in to play Mexican Train
Dominoes. I have added many more friends to
my list and when I leave the OAC I feel pleased
and satisfied within for I have given of myself.
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself
in the service of others

Volunteering
Colborne - Johanna Boffa
and Catherine Ross - Sisters!
Twenty-five years
ago when we saw
Colborne being built,
our immediate reaction
was: “They’ll never get
us in there. It is for OLD
people.” And now that
we are that blessed age, we thoroughly enjoy all
the good things Colborne offers – the classes and
courses, the music and art, the great staff, the
affordable and excellent coffee, and above all,
the support and friendship of all the people we
have met there since we retired. When a vacancy
occurred in the library three years ago, it was a
good fit for both of us. There is nothing like a
perfectly alphabetized shelf of books to gladden
a librarian’s heart. Also, there is the joy of book
discussions with Colborne members, and receiving
recommendations for “a really good read”, which
we then pass on to the next reader who asks. We
make a great tag team as we sort incoming books
into genres: mystery hardcover and paperback,
general fiction hardcover and paperback, romance
and non-fiction. Jigsaw puzzles have joined the
books and magazines that can be borrowed, and
we are hoping to get a shelf of DVD’s going soon.
And, you don’t have to keep quiet in our Library!
Romac - Maria and Luis Gomes
Luis first became
involved at ROMAC
when volunteer Peggy
Black needed help
to set up the carpet
bowling equipment.
When Peggy could no
longer continue, Maria joined Luis at ROMAC
and they became the Carpet Bowling Convenors.
Both Maria and Luis love doing something for
the centres and they feel they are really helping
others. They get a lot of enjoyment with all the
members who play carpet bowling.
They look forward to it every week and really
enjoy it!!!
Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends
while helping out your community. A win-win situation!
If you are are interested in pursuing one of the many
opportunites available please contact staff.

Take a ride down memory lane while listening to music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s! This class is ideal
for active people who want to incorporate cycling into their exercise program. We’ll combine up to
20 minutes of indoor cycling with strength training using small equipment. You don’t have to be a
cyclist or a weightlifter! Enjoy a variety of exercises to improve your strength, posture, balance, and
flexibility. Mat work is involved, especially during stretching at the end. Please bring a towel and

NEW Conquest of the Americas Convenors: Terry Ponedel, Rory and Denise Hynes
Why was Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the Americas in 1492 arguably the most important
event in the history of the world? Professor Marshall C. Eakin of Vanderbilt University argues that it
gave birth to the distinct identity of the Americas today by creating a collision between three distinct
peoples and cultures: European, African, and Native American. Join us for this lecture series on the
Conquest of the Americas.

The Guide to Essential Italy Convenors: Georgina Downie and Lore Faber
In 36 lectures, The Guide to Essential Italy is a specially tailored journey of a kind no guidebook
anywhere can offer—a personally guided tour that lets you explore the most famous and culturally
important sites: splendorous palaces, grand piazzas, dazzling statuary, glorious cathedrals and
churches, monumental artworks, and much more. In the process, you’ll take time to visit hidden
gems and less traveled byways, and to make unusual and fascinating discoveries. Your guide is
Professor Kenneth R. Bartlett of the University of Toronto, an esteemed historian and scholar who
knows these remarkable places in intimate detail, having traveled to Italy every year since 1970.
As a cultural tour leader there for decades, Professor Bartlett knows Italy like few others do, and
demonstrates a special talent for uncovering its most memorable historic, cultural, and artistic riches.

Canada’s pioneering aircraft manufacturer, de

we know today as Bombardier Aerospace Inc.
This session will re-tell the story of a company’s
humble beginnings in the 1920s, in the suburbs
of Toronto, making aircraft from wood, canvas,
wire and glue, to world class, purpose built ‘state
of the art’ aircraft at work all over the world. De
Havilland Canada evolved to design and build
aircraft to meet the challenges presented by our
spread-out country and its harsh climate. More
recently, the Dash 8 Series established the de
Havilland brand as the gold standard in medium
range turbo prop airliners. The brand has been
absorbed into the Bombardier Aerospace family

Dash 8 Q Series now in worldwide service. Sign up

Trafalgar Park Revitalization
New Membership Cards
I have been asked many times what will happen
to the Oakville Seniors Centre once the centre
moves into its’ new home in the newly expanded
and refurbished Oakville Arena. In late June a
news release stated:
The switch to the new plastic membership
cards went very smoothly and most members
are scanning their cards every time they come
to the centre. If you still don’t have your plastic
membership card, visit the reception desk
and we’ll take your picture and you can
start scanning!
“Town Council approved moving ahead with a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between
the Town of Oakville and the Mississauga Halton
Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). The
non-binding MOU outlines the scope and scale
of a partnership between the town and the LHIN
regarding the potential concept of a community
health hub. Further work and analysis will be
required before any binding agreement would be
created for approval by Council.”
The Kerr Street Senior Centre could be a possible
site for such a Community Health Hub. Of
course, much discussion and investigation will
take place between now and when we move
in 2018. Watch for more information as it
becomes available.
And yes, the plans are coming along and on time
for the new centre. The architect and project
lead have been very busy with the large picture
so soon we will get to the fine details. Please
speak with Karen or Maggie if you have any
questions.
Heads Up!
Next spring /summer we will be having the
Second Chance Clothing Sale so when you purge
and clean out your closet, think of the centre
and hang on to your gently used clothing until
then. Your clothing donation will be greatly
appreciated by someone. More information to
come in the next newsletter.

Garage Sale
Pssst...
Going, going, gone! Another successful garage
sale took place in the spring with the help of
many volunteers. Thanks to all who helped out.
What else do we have going on at the Kerr
Street Centre? Great programs, special events,
camaraderie and lots more: movie and book
lending libraries, lost and found, and a donation
drawer for household batteries, pop tabs, eye
glasses and gently used books younger that two
years. Connect with a friend at the bistro for a
coffee or just relax.

25th Anniversary
Wow…what a time we had! The two anniversary
events were bigger and better than we could
have even imagined many months ago when
we started planning. Sincere thanks to the
Anniversary Planning Committee for their
creative ideas and hard work. June 7 saw 200

June 23 the weather cleared...whew, and 120
members celebrated in style on the beautiful
patio with a jazz trio, cocktails and appetizers.

Lunch Tables and Lounge Sharing
The Colborne Centre is a busy, bustling place.
On certain days at certain times, the lounge is
reserved for regularly scheduled Drop-In activities
(listed in the Seniors Services Newsletter). During
these times, there may be a sign on the table
indicating it is reserved. Please be respectful of
this notice, regularly scheduled drop-in activities
take precedence over casual players or visitors.
Please also try to keep the three smaller round
tables at the front of the lounge free for our
lunch guests. Please be respectful of the space
and each other, your cooperation is key to a
