WE ARE A CLUB DEVOTED TO PHYSICAL FITNESS, ATHLETIC COMPETITION,
HEALTH, AND FELLOWSHIP.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
- Katie Exas, President
The January meeting was well attended and the new meeting place at JR
Pizzeria was well received. Thank you to Mike, the owner, for putting out
such a nice display of food for everyone.
We discussed several races that will
be coming up in the not too distant
future.
January 13th was the
second Shiver By The River Race,
and although I do not have a breakdown between 5K and 10K finishers, we had a total number of 595
runners. This beats the total by 30
some runners from last year's January race. A big thank you to all the
volunteers and runners who were
part of this record breaking event.
We have 2 more Shiver races
coming up with the banquet being
held on March 10th.
Over the course of the next
couple of months, the officer committee will meet to review and
discuss some of the suggestions
that were written down during this
last month's meeting as far as what
we might like to do in supporting any
local agencies, monetarily. Some
thoughts included looking at Nolde,
the Berks Conservancy, spending
some money on club items that can
benefit our races along with further
funding of some of our own social
events. These were just a few
things that were mentioned.
The Pacers give out a scholarship
for two cross country athletes. If
anyone knows of any XC boys
and/or girls who would be interested
in applying for this, information and
the applications are on the web site.
The deadline is February 28th, so
please have your athletes get their
applications in as soon as possible.
Also, a big thank you to Ted
Andrus for donating 2 Southwest
Airline tickets that were raffled at the
Kris Kringle Race. The winner of
these tickets was Teresa Spitler.
Congratulations and Enjoy
Please be on the lookout for
weekly eblasts. This is just another
way to keep people up to date as to
what is happening with our club as
far as weekly runs, social events,
and Pacer races. If you are not
receiving these eblasts feel free to
send me your email address so that
we may enter it into the system. You
can send your email address to
[email protected] On
a final note, be and run safe.
Nolde Forest Trail Maintenance is ongoing,
contact Charlie Crowell for meeting times.

MEETING MINUTES
LOCATION: JR’s Pizzaria January 10, 2013
by: Vera Kochen
Treasurer’s Report: Shaun Luther presented the treasurer’s report
and reported the club is in good financial standing. Shaun also
reported he is getting ready to have the taxes done.
Race Director’s Reports: Katie reported there were 609 finishers
at the Kris Kringle. The Southwest airline tickets were won by
Teresa Spitler of York.
The second Shiver is Sunday January 13th. Many volunteers are
needed, please come out and help if you are available.
Brett Lynch reported the Charlie Horse registration is open on
pagodapacers.com.
Phil Lechner reported there was a lot of positive feedback from
the junior high cross country coaches on the course at the
Reading Fair Grounds, so the Junior High Cross Country Race
will remain at the Reading Fair Grounds.
Katie discussed the need to balance awards equally between men
and women, and also between the age group increments.
Ted Andrus reported the application for the Run for the Ages is
begin worked on. Race date is Sunday June 23.
Social events: There will be a happy hour on Friday January 11th
at the Beverly Hills Tavern. Free wings will be offered in the
tavern section.
There will be Wallyball on Friday January 18 at Colonial Hills
Fitness from 7:00 to 10:00.
There will be a Fat Ass run on the first Sunday in March leaving
from Stephan Weiss’s house. This is a 10k loop that is run as
many times as each runner chooses. If you plan on attending,
please bring food to share for after the run.
Old Business:
Members at January meeting were asked to write suggestions on
ways to use some of the profit the club has earned.
New Business:
Kate Murray reported that now that it is January, race sponsors
that sponsor a race over $500.00 will get their logo on the Pagoda
Pacer website.
Phil Lechner reported the charity runs are on hold for now. They
will start up again in spring with one charity run every other
month. On Wednesday, February 6, there will be a run from A
Running Start in West Reading. The store will remain open a little
later than usual that evening.
Kutztown school district is looking for a new high school track and
field coach.
A weekly e-blast will be sent to members when the monthly
newsletter is on the website. Also, a weekly e-blast will be sent
out informing you of the Wednesday night run, any social events
going on that week, and any Pacer races.
Discussed going to a different provider for soup for the Shiver
races. In order to go to the other provider, the club would have to
purchase five gallon insulated containers to put the soup in. This
prompted a discussion to budget $2000.00 per year for equipment. Race directors can spend up to $500.00 for equipment
they need after getting the president’s approval. More than
$500.00 will need the approval of the executive committee. These
combined purchases will not exceed $2000.00 per year.
Ted Andrus talked about getting a group together for a Big Day
Out with Pocono Whitewater Rafting. On the Big Day Out, you
bike, hike and raft the Lehigh Gorge in one day. The price of this
includes three meals. These trips start April 27 through October
26. Ted will put information on Facebook.
The deadline for the Cross Country Scholarship is February 29,
2013. The deadline for the Pagoda Pacer Member only Scholarship is May 30, 2013. These applications can be found on the
Pagoda Pacer website. Please share this information with
anyone you know that is eligible to apply for either of these
scholarships. Applications for the Cross Country Scholarship
should be submitted as soon as possible.

The REAL Meaning of the “Fat Ass”
by: Phil Lechner
Normally if someone yells out "FAT ASS" someone nearby is
bound to get offended!!! In running circles, though, it means
something much much different. Fat asses are becoming
more and more popular as the cost of races rise and the
increased competition forces many to look for races that are
much more relaxed and social. A typical fat ass costs $0, but
it is expected that the participants bring food and drinks in
order to properly stock the aide stations during the event.
Distances vary, but you can do as much, or as little as you
want (up to a 50k or 31 miles). Most fat asses are a loop
courses (anywhere from 3 to 6 miles per loop) and can be
either road or trail or a combination of both. It is an excellent
way to get a longer training run in with friends, or it allows for
someone to try to attempt a max personal distance. If you are
afraid of longer distances or courses (like the idea of running
around Blue Marsh), this type of event is perfectly suited for
you. Try it, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
A few upcoming events include one at Green Lane Reservoir
at the beginning of February, as well as two in March hosted
by Stephan Weiss and later Rod Fizz. The most popular fat
ass is held the first Saturday in January at Fair Hill in Maryland. Over 250 people from five states attend this beautiful
event held in the heart of horse country right outside of
Newark, Delaware. Everyone brings snacks for the aide
stations, as well as large amounts of canned goods to be
donated to local food banks. Ten to fifteen Pacers made the
trip down there and were greeted with ideal (for winter) conditions for trail running. The course itself were three, five mile
sections all of which were trail or fields. The first section had
many twists and turns, ups and downs, but eventually you
arrived at the only aide station on the course. You snacked
quickly and then did another five mile loop which brought you
back to the very same aide station. Once there you then did
the five mile trip back to the starting line(by way of new trail
and fields). That is what is cool about this course, because
you really have 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 mile options (depending
on how you feel). They even have another option which drastically reduces the last 5 mile section. Many Pacers decided
on a set distance in advance and stick to it. I ran most of the
course with Donny Mengel (as always) and finished the entire
30+ miles. We even did "extra" when we got lost, TWICE!!!
Sam and Bryan Moll (with his super-duper running dog Eddy),
as well as Lori Johnson, also completed the whole thing.
Michele Gallen (almost) finished her first 50k, but pulled a
"Gallen" and short-cutted the last leg of the course--still a
great effort and a career long for her. A great event with many
friends and loads of very helpful volunteers. Everyone should
try this type of event, just make sure you look around to see
whose near by when talking about the FAT ASS!!!
