With endless assistance from our devoted volunteers, plus the hard work of the Oregon Youth Conservation Corps (OYCC), we were fortunately able to beat the deadline The OYCC crew takes a much deserved rest for a photo op. by over two weeks. The TCPM Board held its July meeting at Kilchis Point Reserve (KPR) on the 10th, the Grand Ronde Tribal Council – along with the Tillamook County Commissioners and city mayors and managers - visited on the 15th, and were driven to and from Kilchis Point on the WAVE bus that features the Museum’s stagecoach on its exterior. 75 ft. bridge, completed: The second on the trail accommodated an Then the Odd Fellows, Rotarians, the Trust bridge alder, thanks to the OYCC crew who for Public Lands, and several family reunions insisted the tree be saved. met for events at KPR. We now have thousands of visitors a year to the site and written comments by the visitors are universally caring and supportive. We expect to receive our Notice to Proceed from Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) very soon so we can complete the 3500 feet of trails and three bridges in our second loop (Phase 4) of development. OPRD is providing a $50,000 grant toward Phase 4, and we will be working throughout the winter to expand and improve developed trails. Karen Hanson, a dedicated Kilchis Point volunteer, created and donated a basalt stone sculpture of a salmon called “River Spirit” to KPR. Caitlin designed, and we recently constructed, a three-sided river-rock stand for the sculpture and it now stands at the first Convening Circle at Kilchis Point Reserve. Then we designed, constructed and installed Port Orford cedar benches on each side of the sculpture. By all accounts, the result is beautiful. These two benches River Spirit, detail: Karen Hanson sculpted “River Spirit” from basalt just for Kilchis Point. are now available for sponsorship. Contact Caitlin at the museum for details. Benches: Hand crafted Port Orford cedar benches, made by Director Gary Albright, flank “River Spirit” sculpture at Kilchis Point’s convening circle. Please - rain or shine – take an hour and go to Kilchis Point Reserve to see what this community is capable of doing. I think it will make you happy. Gary Festival of Trees This year will be the 10th anniversary of TCPM’s only fundraiser of the year - the Festival of Trees - so the committee is already making plans to make this a very special event. The trees will be decorated on December 6th and they will be on display from December 7 until December 15. The Gala Event will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 PM on Friday, December 13, 2013. Tickets will go on sale in mid-November. Proceeds from this year’s event are earmarked for the bird watching station at Kilchis Point Reserve. As part of the anniversary celebration, we will be creating a “Community Tree.” Since the KPR bird watching station is the beneficiary of this year’s funds, we are asking individuals and organizations to donate a bird-themed ornament that will then be used by volunteers to decorate a tree that will be entitled “Birds of a Feather.” This is a good way for those who are not usually able to decorate an entire tree to experience the fun. We ask that you drop your ornament donations at TCPM between 10 am and 4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday anytime before Thanksgiving. For more information, please call Carla or Ruby at TCPM (503-8424553). Have you noticed..... …how lovely the Museum looks? The bottom section was painted “ChocolateTruffle” (a dark brown color). This suggestion to “ground the building” was recommended toTCPM by an architect doing a Museum evaluation a few years ago as part of a grant. Thanks to another grant – this time from the Kinsman Foundation - we did some much-needed repair work to the basement walls to waterproof them and fix some cracks. Then we painted. And lastly, through the same Kinsman Foundation grant, we were able to hire Penny Eberle to refurbish the gardens to look more Victorian, thus reflecting the time period when the building was constructed. We think all the changes have made “the Old Girl” look better than she has in a long time. Thank you to these members: Great Speaker Series Updates from the Summer CORPORATE TCPM has been able to host wonderful speakers again this year. From Nan Laurence talking about our downtown areas to the band “Coaster” playing Irish music to Dr. Richard Etualin explaining Lincoln’s ability to work with bipartisan politics during the Civil War, our speakers continue to entertain and educate our visitors. Upcoming programs will include Portland State University’s Elisheva Cohen speaking about “A Jew in a Muslim Land; My Travels in Morocco” on October 26 at 2:00 PM. Caitlin Heusser, our Cultural Heritage Manager, did a splendid job organizing the second annual Outdoor Discovery Day at Kilchis Point Reserve in July. We added more learning stations and brought back some favorites. We had twice as many visitors this year (274) from last year and many of them had not visited KPR before. This was a day to remember for us all. Katherine Rulifson TLC Federal Credit Union Don & Linnea Burden Stacie Fricia, TCCA Norman A. TCPM had about 85 visitors that day and the other museums reported increased visitation as well. Partnering with the other Tillamook museums was groundbreaking and we hope to continue the relationship into the future. Who might these exotic creatures be? A group of Sherlock Holmes fans called “The Noble And Most Singular Order Of The Blue Carbuncle” from Portland dressed up for their visit to TCPM in September. They were in town to see the TAPA play and stopped at TCPM first. Pottery Classes Local potter Ann Kelly has offered to hold a series of six adult classes in the art of Pre-Columbian pottery. Although the October – November class is already full, if there is enough interest, Ann will continue to hold classes here at TCPM. The cost is $60 for Friends of the Museum and $70 for non-members. If you are interested in future classes, give Carla a call to be placed on the list for classes starting again in January. Exhibit News Linda Jacob and JoAnn Widmer approached Carla last year with the idea to feature an exhibit of the paintings of a local art teacher. Detail of “Seagulls” by Mae Cronant Thanks to Linda and JoAnn, TCPM will be displaying “The Art of Mae Cronant” until November 30, 2013. Many Tillamookians took watercolor painting classes from Mae in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Mae, who passed away at the age of 92 in 1994, was a Blog On! prolific painter in the media of watercolors and oils. We have borrowed Mae’s paintings from all over Oregon to present to our visitors and we think you will enjoy this show. Continuing along the lines of art teachers, we are pleased to present “Women in the Arts, Redux” from December 19, 2013 to February 18, 2014. This exhibit will showcase the talents of Tillamook High School art teacher Breanna Moran as well as the exciting art of Rebecca Spaniel, formerly of Bay City and Tillamook. Breanna is also the artist who has been painting the mural on the Latimer Quilt & Textile Center’s repository. A few years ago, we presented “Women in the Arts” with creations by Diane Colcord and Heidi Clemens. This new exhibit will show how young women can make their way in the art world as well. “Moose” detail by Rebecca Spaniel. Rebecca will be joining Breanna Moran in “Women of the Arts; Redux.” Caitlin Heusser writes a blog about Kilchis Point Reserve. It can be accessed at [email protected].
