Towards the end of the 1940s, Colin Middleton’s work took on a new direction, moving away from the surrealist and symbolist-inspired paintings of the wartime years towards a more emotionally expressive way of working. The paintings of the post-war years could be considered as forming Middleton’s first mature body of work, in which consistency of style is mirrored by a consistency of subject and reference, creating an emotional coherence that runs throughout this period. While the expression of emotion appears driven by the events and the immediate legacy of World War Two, Middleton adds a greater resonance and broader significance to these paintings by frequently using titles that imply specific biblical references or meanings. With the broadest spiritual implications of the Bible, Middleton was able to express a universality that existed in the human spirit and which the destruction of convention and normality caused by the war had once again made apparent across all societies. The critic Edward Sheehy wrote of the mystical quality that Middleton sought to express through the single female figures he painted at this time, endowing them with a universality and timelessness “without in any way abstracting from their immediate and intimate humanity.” Miriam is presented with nothing to locate her or to inform us about her, as is typical of this series of works. Her name might mean nothing beyond that of the sitter, but seen in the context of other works of that time we are reminded of the prophetess who was also associated with the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Middleton saw the millions of people uprooted and dispossessed by the events of the war as a wandering tribe searching for peace and understanding. The turbulent background, with its long, repeated strokes creates an almost apocalyptic mood, against which Miriam stands firmly, the line of her nose and the T-shape of her scarf establishing a rigid geometry that leads down to her hand, its ambiguous gesture either beckoning on, or blocking further passage.
