Get the Most Out of Livestock What is Lysine?
ANIMAL N UTRITION Get the Most Out of Livestock G enetically superior animals depend on modern diets. A properly formulated diet should meet animals’ nutrient requirements while minimizing nutrient deficiencies and overages. One of the key features of modern diets is the emphasis on digestible amino acid formulation. Proper digestible amino acid levels are critical for lean meat production. Amino acid quality is determined by a diet’s ability to supply essential amino acids in a ratio (profile) that the animal requires. When supplemental amino acids are used appropriately, they can reduce the amount of crude protein needed, thus lowering diet costs. This allows nutritionists to use a wide range of alternative ingredients in the diet that otherwise may not be economically or nutritionally practical. When protein and amino acids are overfed, the excess will be excreted as nitrogen compounds into manure, which can negatively affect your animals and their living conditions. Animal agriculture is constantly working to minimize its impact on the environment. Using supplemental amino acids as part of a balanced nutrition program is one of the first steps to developing a sound program that is environmentally sensitive.* ADM Specialty Feed Ingredients has a global team of sales and technical experts. They understand the complexities of ingredient interaction in the diet and how to best utilize ADM L-Lysine HCl in feeding programs. What is Lysine? In the past, swine and poultry diets were formulated using a specified crude protein level that was proven to provide an acceptable level of production. However, widespread commercial production of supplemental amino acids and further refining of swine and poultry amino acid requirements have provided nutritionists with the option of reducing dietary crude protein without compromising performance levels. Lysine is a key amino acid that animals need to optimize their genetic potential. ADM developed this high-quality, granular product using our most advanced technology. Composed of 100% isomerically pure L-lysine, it’s the producers’ choice for establishing a balance between amino acid and nutritional content to optimize growth and production. The addition of lysine to aquaculture diets will improve the amino acid profile of the diet and ensure that the amino acid requirements are met. Supplementing lysine can also reduce crude protein, and thus nitrogen excretion. Lysine in Your Operations Many feedstuffs are low in lysine and may require lysine supplementation to make up for the deficiency. Lysine is considered the first limiting amino acid in swine diets and the second limiting amino acid in poultry diets. By using lysine along with threonine, non-traditional protein sources may be used; dietary protein can be lowered, and performance can be maintained or improved. Low-protein swine diets supplemented with crystalline amino acids have been shown to reduce nitrogen excretion by 20-40%. Supplementing poultry diets with granular lysine is common. It complements the amino acids contained in other feed ingredients. Furthermore, incorporating both lysine and threonine into poultry diets can help lower dietary crude protein and reduce excess amino acids and nitrogen.
