Phone Calls to Parent/Guardians
Before phone call:
•Ask student if he/she wants to be present for call
•Ask student if he/she wants to participate in the call, and if so, in what way?
(i.e., do they want to say anything, and if so, what?)
Key talking points for phone call:
•Introduce self and role at NHS
•Remind parent that screening of 7th/ 9th graders took place
•Inform parent that child’s screen results warranted a phone call home
•Ask if parent is available to talk—and if not, when would be a good time (and at what number)
•Mention whether or not student is present in room for this call
•Inform parent that child’s score on screening tool suggested that he/she is engaging in risky behaviors regarding substance use
(state which substance(s) and phone call is being made in order to ensure child’s safety and to make parent aware of resources
available to them to address child’s concerning behaviors
•Offer resources (list will be provided- attached), including pediatrician, local providers, and/or more comprehensive list of
Boston Metro area providers if parents would like to go outside of MetroWest area (can be emailed to parents)
Draft Script for Phone Call to Parents:
Hi Mr./Mrs. ______________________,
Hi, I’m (Name and Title/Role at NHS) . As you may recall, we did a
screening today about drug and alcohol use with members of the seventh
grade/freshman class, and I’m calling to discuss (Student’s Name) ‘s
results with you. Are you available to talk right now?
(If it is NOT a good time, offer to call them back at another time, but get the
phone number and a good time to call them)
Optional if student is present for phone call: (Student’s Name) is here
with me now, and if it’s alright with you, I’d like to put you on speaker phone
to discuss the screening results.
Based on the CRAFFT screening tool, your child scored what is considered
to be a ‘positive’ screen, meaning that he/she is engaging in some risky
behaviors related to substance use. I’m calling because we just want to
make sure that your child is safe and that you are aware of what resources
exist if you would like to seek out some supports for (Student’s Name) .
Your child’s pediatrician is certainly one place you can start--he/she should
be able to assess (Student’s Name) and connect him/her to further
treatment if he/she thinks it’s appropriate. We’ve also contacted a few local
agencies that are aware that NHS is doing these screenings, and I can give
you their contact information if you would like to reach out to them directly. I
can also email you a comprehensive list of local substance use and mental
health treatment providers if you would like. (See attached)
