Felt Covered Ottoman Materials Instructions • Old or cheap ottoman to reupholster 1. Measure each surface (length and width) of your existing ottoman using a tape measure. (Figure A & Figure B) • Kunin Felt by the Yard in any color or style* (yardage will vary depending on the size of the foot stool you are covering) 2. Add 1" to the width of each side panel of the ottoman. 3. Add 2½" to the length of each side panel to allow for a ½" seam at the top and 2" overlap at the bottom. 4. Add 1" to the width and length for the top panel of the ottoman. 5. Cut out your fabric panels (for the sides of a square ottoman, you will cut four side panels and one top panel).** 6. Place two of the side panels with edges matching and right sides together. Pin together along one of the long sides. 7. Sew together with a ½" seam. Pin and sew the other two side panels to the first two side panels, making one long length of fabric (all four side panels connected together into one long strip). Sew the two ends of your strip together (right sides together) to form a circular piece. 8. Check your measurements by slipping the sewn four-panel band of fabric over the ottoman, and adjust the fit if necessary. It should slip smoothly onto the ottoman, with little excess fabric, for a snug fit. Measuring Tape, Scissors, Pins, Sewing Machine, Thread, Staple Gun, Staples 9. Place one edge of your top panel along the top edge of one of the side panels of in the four-panel band. The panels should be right sides together, with edges even and corners matching. Pin in place, then stitch the fabric together using a ½" seam. Optional: Permanent Fabric Glue (I use Fabri Tac Glue or other permanent glue that doesn’t seep into the fabric.) 10. Turn to the next side panel of the four-panel band and repeat the procedure until the top is sewn completely to the four-panel band. • Kunin Felt by the Yard in Black for the bottom panel • Embellishments of your choice Tools & Notions Notes *If you choose felt with a definite ™ pattern, such as PrintzFelt or ™ FanciFelt , you will need to adjust the amount of fabric you purchase to allow for matching the pattern. **For a cylindrical ottoman, cut one side panel that will wrap completely around the base, joining with a seam and one top circle panel. 11. Turn the ottoman cover right side out. Slip it on the ottoman to check the fit, making adjustments as needed. If you are using sew-on embellishments, add them now. 12. Pull the cover down securely and turn the ottoman upside down. Pull the loose ends of one side of the fabric cover over the bottom edge of the ottoman. Use a staple gun to attach the fabric to the bottom edge of the ottoman. Repeat with the opposite side, making sure you have a snug fit. Repeat the stapling procedure with the other two sides. 13. Cut a piece of black felt that is a little smaller than dimensions of the bottom of the ottoman (small enough so that the black felt will not overlap the bottom edge of the ottoman but will still cover the fabric on the bottom). Staple the felt square in place. 14. Add glue-on embellishments. © The Kunin Group, a division of Foss Manufacturing Company, LLC. 11 Merrill Industrial Drive - PO Box 5000 Hampton, NH 03842-5000 USA Felt Covered Foot Stool Figure A Figure B Square/Rectangle Stool Cylindrical Stool Measure length and width of all sides and the top.
