Commodore’s Comments
This is it ̶ my final column! I
want to take this opportunity to
thank the entire VYC staff for all
their hard work and commitment to
making this a special year for Deke
and me. A special thank you goes
out to all of you who volunteered by
being a committee member or who
took the time to help decorate at the
many events that were held at the Club this year.
Make plans to attend the annual meeting on January
4 at 6:00 p.m. During this meeting, we will be sharing
the annual audit report along with highlights of the 2015
committee reports and announcing our Board Member
election results.
Manager’s Column
The holiday season is behind us.
The decorations have been taken down
and placed in storage until next year.
We would like to thank everyone who
supported the Club during the busy
season and hope that you enjoyed the
time you shared with us.
Sure there was a lot going on
in December, but January looks
just as busy. In addition to the traditional events such as
the Commodore’s Roast, Commodore’s Ball, etc., we’ve
brought back the Chef’s Cooking Class, Gourmet Burgers
and Lobsterfest. Details on all the upcoming events are in
this issue of the Currents. Make your plans early to attend
one or all of these great events.
I think we would all agree that it is important for us to
keep the members constantly up to date on what’s happening
at the Club. One way that we do this is through email blasts.
Timely email allows us to remind you of upcoming events,
changes to Club hours, and just about anything else that
may be important to you. Sometime ago, we began using a
professional email generator, Constant Contact. It allows us
to see how frequently the emails are read and other useful
information. One thing we learned was that most of you
are viewing our emails on your cell phones. So, we made
another upgrade that makes it much easier for you to view
the emails when using a cell phone. If you are not currently
receiving emails from the Club, it probably means that we
don’t have an email address for you. So, please, stop by one
day and give your email address to Sue so we can get you in
the list.
January 2016
If you’re reading this in late December, there is still
time to sign up for the New Year’s Eve Party; it promises
to be an outstanding event.
Come join in the fun at two great events, the
Ladies’ Luncheon scheduled for January 8 at noon and
the Commodore’s Roast scheduled for January 9 at
6:00 p.m.
On January 23 is one of VYC’s signature events,
The Commodore’s Ball. It promises to be a night full of
tradition and fun.
Thank you, VYC, for allowing me the opportunity to
serve as your Commodore for 2015.
See you at the Club!
Melinda Short, Commodore

Recently, as part of an annual fire inspection, we were
required to replace the four fire hoses located in the marina.
Well, these hoses make great fender material for boat slips
so we saved them. If anyone has a use for them, please give
me a call.
As a reminder, the Where in the World is the VYC Burgee
contest concluded last month. Because of editorial deadlines,
the results will be posted in the February issue of Currents.
Fair winds and following seas.
Jerry Clemens, Club Manager
“Cloak and Dagger”
Each month, somewhere in the Currents, we will carefully
hide one person’s membership number.
If you locate your number and come forward by January
15, you will receive a complimentary bottle of our house wine
to enjoy with dinner some evening at the Club.
Hints to help you get started:
 It will always be four digits. If you
have a three digit number, it will be
preceded by a zero.
 It will not be part of any other
sequence of numbers such as a date
or phone number.
Remember, you only have until the
15th of the month to contact Jerry to
claim your prize.
Good Luck!

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail
Concluding the History of Venice Youth
Boating Association--The VYBA into the
Future
The VYBA has been fortunate enough to
have some outstanding presidents of its board
of directors, including Harriet Corrigan,
Fred Strammer, John Thomas, Celeste
Patete, and John Whitehead to name a few.
Currently, we have one of the most dedicated
and determined individuals I know. He has
a vision and a passion for the VYBA that I
believe will allow this organization to remain strong well into the future.
John Sammet first visited the
Venice Yacht Club in 1970, when his
wife’s parents were members. Bonnie's
father was a member of the Board and
Chairman of the House Committee.
John became very familiar with the
inner workings of the VYC and had
some knowledge of the VYBA. John
retired after 39 years of service in the
Xerox Corporation, moved to Venice
in 2008, and shortly thereafter joined
VYC. He quickly became involved
at the Club and became the Historian
in 2010, a position that he still holds.
As Historian, he became interested in
the history of the VYBA and decided
to get involved. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2011,
elected as treasurer in 2013 and elected board chair in 2014. With
John's guidance there have been a number of changes at the VYBA.
The bylaws underwent a complete revision to update to the current
laws. The website was revamped and continues to be improved, a major
communication tool in this age. He personally funded a consultant
for the Board of Directors to engage us in better communication
systems and streamlining our committee structure. As a result of John's
"thinking out-of-the-box", the 420 sailboats that were not being used on
Thursdays are now rented by the adult sailors, generating a source of
income for the organization.
The area where John excels is fundraising for the organization.
John has personally met with many donors who have graciously given
their donations to the VYBA as a result of John's contact with them.
John has worked with the Gulf Coast Community Foundation to secure
donations. John and Tracey van Gennip spearheaded the effort to make
us visible on the Giving Challenge which resulted in thousands of
dollars in donations.
A few of John's goals are to renovate our boat yard and improve
the sailing equipment, increase the number of sailing students and
educational programs through the VYBA, reach out to the public
schools through the US Sailing Reach and STEM programs, and create
a VYBA Endowment Fund to secure financial stability in the future.
If you get a chance, please thank John for his tireless efforts and
work with the VYBA. As Historian, he gave me all of the information
for the articles I've written this year.
Thank you for allowing me to be your Fleet Captain of Sail in 2015,
and I invite you all to come to the pram shed on Saturdays to see what
the VYBA is doing for the youth of our community.

Message from the Fleet Captain Power
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed
this year’s Lighting of the Fleet and the
beautifully decorated parade of boats as
they passed in front of the Club’s dock.
The last big event of my term as Fleet
Captain Power for the past year was,
or will be depending on when you read
this, the Boat-in on New Year’s Eve and
Potluck on New Year’s Day. Marlene
and I have been looking forward to this
big night at the Club and staying on the boat for the night.
The last cruise of the year was to Marina Jack November
20 – 22. There were seven boats signed up but, as sometimes
happens, we lost three for various reasons, and the four that did
make it had a great time. The weather cooperated considering
that the forecast kept saying rain. We had a great potluck on the
dock Friday night and a nourishing breakfast for all Saturday
morning. Some spent the day exploring downtown Sarasota,
the farmers’ market, and craft show while others just relaxed or
did both. Saturday evening we all went to dinner at Caragiulos.
This will be my last article as Fleet Captain Power. Both
Marlene and I have enjoyed the past two years that I have
had the pleasure of being Fleet Captain. I especially want to
thank everyone who helped out by volunteering to be a cruise
leader and all those who joined the cruises and made them so
memorable. Your new Fleet Captain Power next year is Kitch
Keitchen. Kitch and Kim recently became the proud owners
of a Tiara that they have docked at the Club. They did their
first VYC cruise on the new boat to Marina Jack. Kitch has put
together a schedule for next year with the first cruise to Sarasota
Yacht Club in February and then Marina Jack in March. I know
that Kitch will make a very good Fleet Captain and Marlene
and I are looking forward to cruising with him and Kim.
If you haven’t been to a Fleet Captains’ Luncheon, or it
has been a while, come join us -- and yes, the ladies are also
welcome. We meet every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., but come a
little early as we start gathering around 11:15 a.m. Please join
your fellow members, both boaters and non-boaters, and me for
a great lunch and casual conversation. Did I mention the menu?
Chef Josh always has a tasty selection of entrées with soup,
rolls, cookies, and ice cream. No reservations required.

competitors. What an incredible investment in youth made
by the Campbell Foundation!
www.veniceyouthboating.com
VYBA Board of Directors News
Our board has increased from 11 to 14 voting directors and
consists of seven men and seven women. The increased board
size is necessary to accomplish longer-term goals of the board
and insure successful, necessary annual fundraising. Now,
two of our directors are first year sailors’ parents, and three
are parents of our Campbell 420 Fleet sailors. In addition, we
have five other board members who are experienced sailors
with two who are members of the Venice Women’s Sailing
Squadron. The board is a great combination of parental
influence, sailing knowledge, business and legal expertise,
and not-for-profit knowledge and experience.
School Year Program
Our school year program has increased in size this year. It
is the largest program in recent years with additional sailor
registrations expected this month for the spring sailing season.
Regatta Success
Our sailors have been more successful in regattas this fall for
three reasons:
1) A higher level of instruction overseen by our Sailing
Program Director;
2) New mid-week after school and Sunday afternoon practice
sessions; and
3) The new two-sailor boats in our Campbell 420 fleet.
Our old boats were not competitive. With these new boats,
our Campbell fleet sailors are on an even keel with their
VYBA Volunteers Raised Funds as Swim Marshals at the Challenge FLA Triathlon.
Spring Sailing Schedule
Our sailors are attending new and different regattas this
year around Florida. Here at the VYC, our Commodore’s
Cup Regatta is April 2, when our sailors will parade with
all past Commodores for the Retreat Ceremony followed
by presentation of the Commodore’s Cup to this year’s
VYC Commodore. Then there are awards for the winning
sailors followed by refreshments and hors d’oeuvres for all
in attendance. Later that month, our Venetian Cup Regatta is
April 30 at VYC. VYBA will host over 100 sailors from other
youth sailing organizations in Florida for our one-day regatta.
VYBA received many compliments the past two years from
many sailors and their parents saying it is the best regatta and
the best venue (the VYC Tiki and pool) of the year!
Boatyard Renovation Project
VYBA is in the planning stage for complete renovation of the
boatyard around the Pram Shed that will be funded entirely
by VYBA. It will provide needed greater safety for sailors as
they maneuver their boats around on dollies to launch them,
and it will significantly enhance the appearance of the area.
Florida Council of Yacht Clubs
The November FCYC General Meeting
was held at Lauderdale Yacht Club on
Saturday, the 14th. FCYC Commodore
Tom Smith chaired the Directors’ meeting,
with directors from 31 clubs present.
P/C Gary Riss reported that a nominating
committee had identified and proposed the
following nominees for the 2016 Flag:
•For Commodore- Jack Burwell, Charlotte Harbor Yacht
Club
•For Vice Commodore- Audrey Rice, Venice Yacht Club
•For Rear Commodore- George O’Malley, Moorings Yacht
Club
