huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated candy for the kid's Halloween party. The kids had a blast and left with a very large goodie
bag filled with candy. There were 32 kids who decorated pumpkins,
make fun sunglass masks, and played a few fun Halloween themed
games. As usual, the party would not have been successful without the
help of the parents, Holly Wiles, Sylvia Nedolast, Jane Kennard, Kevin
Nedolast and my high school volunteers: Paige Wiers, Cate Wallhead,
Alex Taylor, Melissa Bogner, Bogner, Marie Thornton, Victoria Shull,
Ian Holbrook and Callie Jones-many of them residents of Holiday

Members,
Please take note that the directors in conjunction with the architectural comittee
and the code enforcer have updated and revised the building codes for Holiday
Lakes. The primary changes were to bring the code up to date to conform with
the Residential Code of Ohio (RCO). There were also changes dealing with property set backs for new construction as well as clarifying fencing regulations. There
was the addition of a new rule regarding the size of any garage or out building
whether attached or not, may be no larger than the footprint of the existing
home. Several outdated paragraphs were removed as well. There has also been a
change to the fee schedule and a revision to what type of work requires permits
(see following schedule). Copies may be obtained from the office. If you are ever
in doubt call ahead to verify whether or not a permit is required. Starting a project requiring a permit without first obtaining approval and a permit will result in
fines being levied. These regulations are here to protect all our property values.

plans, the permit fee will be doubled, plus $250.00* fine.

Membership Meeting Minutes
November 8th, 2012
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. Directors in attendance were Aaron Carmean, Joe
Wiles, Jane Webster, Sean White and Joel Buurma. There were 13 members signed in for attendance. The minutes from the October 11, 2012 membership meeting were read and approved.
President’s Report – Aaron Carmean
We recently voted in a revision to the building code, and permit fee schedule. After input from
the building inspector Bill Nedolast, and the Architectural Committee we came to an agreement
of a few changes. The new revision will go into effect December 1st.
Vice President’s Report – Joe Wiles
The lake will be lowered on the 19th of November and will be dropped six to seven feet.
A member asked how much the lake was lowered last year. Joe replied that it was about the same
as they are doing this year.
Jane Webster noted that we had the curb up last year, so Kevin kept the lake down to help with
the wetness.
East Beach- Some work still needs to get done such as putting in more barriers. The lake being
lowered six to seven feet will allow us to get more work done this winter. The steps are in, and
we will need to seal the areas where the steps do not fit exactly. This should be ready by spring
when the beach opens up.
Roads-They are currently working on culverts. The marina has two that will be redone along
with a few others. We are hoping for another calm winter, to save on winter costs. Last year’s
mild winter allowed us to have the funds to do the culvert work.
Aaron Carmean commented that regarding the spillway, removing the 6 inch lip made a huge
improvement. The water from hurricane Sandy came in quickly but also left very quickly due to
this change.
Director’s Report - Jane Webster
We will be doing a Breakfast with Santa on December 15th. The cost will be $4.00 per person,
and Courtney will be doing a make and take craft with the kids. The breakfasts have done very
well, bringing in a total of $3227.00. A big thank you to Sylvia Nedolast!!
Sylvia of lot#1096 said that it would not be possible without all of the volunteers.
Euchre Nights have been slow, but we plan on continuing them. Thursday November 15 th, and
December 6th at 6:30 pm are the next two scheduled euchre nights. The restaurant does $4.00
burgers on Thursdays, so this is a great way to get out and have some fun with the people in our
community.
Craft Show- November 10th will be the Santa’s Closet from 9am to 2pm at the lodge. We have
21 different crafters and vendors. A variety of vendors such as bead makers, chainsaw carvers,
sign makers, and leather makers will be set up at this event. We will miss Richard Kime and his
bird houses this year. He had to cancel due to trouble with eye surgery, so our thoughts are with
him.

December 8th will be our Christmas Party starting at 6pm. Please have your reservations in by December 4th. Brass Pelican will be catering our dinner for us. They will be serving your choice of
Chicken Marsala, or Prime Rib. Some of the side items are rigatoni, roasted red potatoes, green
beans, salad, dinner rolls, and dessert. After dinner we will put music on and party through the night.
We have put together a Holiday Lakes Calendar that will be for sale at the craft show on November
10th. They will sell for $10.00 each. We will continue to collect pictures though out the coming year
for a future calendar.
Sunday Liquor license did pass the vote in Norwich Township. The only hold up is with Huron
County. All votes were required to be recounted. The restaurant hopes to be open Sundays starting
late December.
Treasurer’s Report – Joel Buurma
We are slightly behind from where we were last year. Between lot charges and dues we are behind
about seven thousand dollars. On the expense side we are under from where we were last year. For
example on wages we are about ten thousand dollars less. This was due to a dry year. We had less
mowing, and snow plowing. Telephone and electricity are right where they should be in comparison
to last year. Our propane is showing under due to the fact that it has not been purchased for winter
yet. Our water and sanitation are where they should be as well. On maintenance we are way under in
comparison to last year. This is due to not spending a lot on the roads. We will be spending money
on replacing approximately 13 culverts this year. The road budget will still have money left even
after paying for the culvert work. Twenty five percent of all dues and lot charges will always go into
our road account. Office and association expenses are also right where they should be. With the
restaurant being open, we now are getting an actual income.
Conservation committee- We have spent money this year on stocking fish. Most of the money has
been all private donations. In July we stocked 1600 small mouth bass, and this month we stocked
1700 seminal perch. The perch were purchased on sale at seventy five cents each. Normally they sell
for a dollar and fifty five cents each.
Joe Wiles mentioned that we also added 20 white amurs with the help of Charles Ousley. He picked
the white amurs up for us at a fish farm in Baltic Ohio. This type of fish will help cut down on the
amount of algae in the lake.
Joel explained to members that we are still waiting on results to come in from a recent study that was
done on our lake this past summer. This was part of a national study that was being done on all lakes
and streams.
Capital Expenditures- We would like to get some docks replaced sometime next spring. We have
also been talking about getting some new signs for the entrances. Something with a marquee to get
info to our members is one of our goals.
Kay of lot# 444 asked about the breakfast money and where it is being used. She also asked if it was
being held for a future septic replacement.
The directors stated so far we have only used that money for an electrical upgrade in the lodge, and
also on some equipment. The money is being put in the general fund, but it is being earmarked for
improvements. The pancake breakfast money is not being used for social funds on things such as
purchasing calendar etc.
Sylvia lot#1096 stated that she wanted to use $75.00 out of the breakfast money to purchase 3 roasters.

The directors replied that purchasing the roasters for that amount was okay.
Goose Hunt- The season is in and out on various dates through January. Several hunters have been
out this season, and so far no complaints.
Director’s Report – Sean White
Regarding the seven thousand we have in delinquent accounts, we will be publishing names in the
beacon starting in January. They will be published periodically until accounts are paid in full.
Notice was given to members in this past beacon, and will be given again in the December beacon.
We had lights out on both of our entrances, but repairs have been made. We had a suggestion to
turn off some of our security lights. The decision was made to keep them on due to the savings
only being a small dollar amount, and due to the recent break-ins.
Capital Expenditures- We would like to replace the docks here at the lodge within the next year.
In the following years we want to work towards replacing the docks at the marina.
Copies of the updated Building Code can be picked up at the office. No major changes were
made.
New Members David & Monica Fasanelli of lot 325 Portage Path were announced.
Membership meetings- No meeting will be held in December or January due to the holiday season.
New Business
Jack of lot#717 inquired about the plans for the East Beach due to it being an eye sore for the community. Joe Wiles stated that we do have plans drawn up for the project. Joe said that it is just a
matter of getting all the equipment there to get the job done. The project may be done sometime
this fall or early next spring. We tried to save money by doing the project ourselves. Our biggest
delay in this project was the supplier for the block we ordered. Jack suggested that we would have
been better off paying and having it done rather than waiting this long for completion. The directors agreed, and said that had they known it was going to take four months for block they would
have considered going a different route. Aaron Carmen mentioned that we were very fortunate
that Hawley Construction lent us the excavator to get some of the work done. Jack mentioned that
he had also volunteered his equipment to be part of the solution. The directors agreed that the
project has taken more time to complete than what they had intended, and will work as hard as
they can to get it completed.
Jack of lot#717 stated that he would like the directors to get some more input on how to spend the
capital expenditures. Jack also mentioned the entrance signs and how they represent Holiday
Lakes. He said that he was once part of a group that had talked about changing the signs, and has
a folder of ideas. Jack mentioned getting something that would represent us a resort community.
The directors said that they are open to design ideas and would like input.
The directors pointed out that the docks have become a priority due to them being a safety issue.
They also would like input on different types of docks as well.
Dave lot#794 as part of the tennis committee asked if the directors could set aside some land for a
future tennis court. The directors explained that the problem is not having any flat land to set
aside. They said it is something they will keep in mind.

Kay of lot#444 explained to the directors that it would be beneficial to send one person from the board
to attend the OLCA meeting. She also encouraged members of the lake to join and attend as well. The
directors replied that normally they send someone such as the office manager to attend, however this
year we were in the middle of a staff change. The directors explained that they would like to attend, but
due to the meeting being in the middle of the work week it is usually attended by our office personnel.
Jack of lot#717 asked Kay of lot#444 if she could submit a written report of the meeting since she was
in attendance. Kay explained that she does not do a report because normally someone from the office
attends as well.
Aaron Carmen mentioned that we are getting useful tips from the meetings when we send a representative. He mentioned the current collection agency Action Collections, is a company that we are now
using due to the information our secretary received at a past OCLA meeting.
John lot#322 asked if info could be put in the next beacon on how to join the OCLA.
Joel Buurma stated that we will try to advertise the OCLA meetings in the beacon as well.
Sylvia #1096 said that she has attended OCLA meetings that have been very interesting, and others that
did not pertain to us. She suggested the person sent to the meeting as a representative, take a voice
recorder.

Santa’s Closet another Big Success!!
Our 2nd annual Santa’s Closet was successful.
Thank you to everyone who participated!! We had over
200 people walk through our doors. It was a great
Start to the Holiday Season. There were 21 vendor tables full of crafts and
Unique gifts. Each vendor gave away a door prize, so their were lots of
winners!! Our Holiday Lakes table sold sweatshirts and Calendars. There is
still time to get your sweatshirt and calendar for Christmas gift giving.
These items are for sale in our Lodge Office.
We had great feed back from all of our vendors, who are looking forward
to doing this again next year.
A special Thank You to Jane Webster for organizing this event.
REDS HAT NEWS
The “Ladies of the Lake” enjoyed desserts by Josie Vogel and Flo Trybuski at their
Nov. meeting and later that day, enjoyed the “Taste of Home” cooking demonstration at the Renaissance Theater in Mansfield. The Nov. 15 th outing to Pine Tree Barn
Shop & Restaurant gave the Gals the early taste of the Christmas Season.
Several members will attend the “Gathering” at the Christian Alliance Church, Rt.
224, on the evenings of December 1,2,3, & 4.
Food items for the Willard Food Bank will be collected at our next meeting, December 11, at 11:00 AM, at the Lodge. Kay Hartz and Nancy Jarrett will be preparing for
the festivities to celebrate Christmas together. Each member is asked to please bring
6 finger-food items for dessert.
Drawing for a “Secret Sister” and a collection of food items for the Willard Food Bank
will take place.
We’ve ALL been good this year, so we’re hoping that “Santa” will visit us FIRST!!

Lake Lowering FAQ’s
As most of you have probably noticed, we started lowering the lake
again on November 19. Many people have been asking questions so
I wanted to answer as many of those as I could.
Why are we lowering it so much every year? - Traditionally we lowered the lake about 7 feet every 3 or 4 years to allow members to do
shoreline and dock work. That schedule has gotten rather screwed
up in the last few years however as we had to lower it to work on the
spillway, then the dam, and this year to work on a break wall for the
East Beach. The plan moving forward is to lower it 2-3 feet every
year and continuing to lower it 7 feet every third year. Lowering it 23 feet every year reduces pressure on docks from ice heaving
throughout the winter and gives a cushion from typical spring flooding. Damage to docks and shoreline has declined dramatically since
we started doing this and many members have voiced their enthusiasm for it.
How long will the lake stay lowered and when will it fill back up
again? - The plan is to keep it 7 feet down until January, then let it
rise to 3 feet below normal until late February, then close the valve
and let it refill. An inch of rain raises our water levels roughly a foot,
so it really doesn’t take much to fill back up again. There are never
any guarantees when weather is involved but the average rainfall
from January 1 to June 1 is 15 inches, so even if we only get half the
average, we should still be at normal levels by boating season.
Does lowering the lake hurt the fish population? – There’s no
good way to know exactly what we lose when lowering it but
the gate is only opened 1/4 of the way so it’s a rather gradual

process, minimal current is created in the lake, and hopefully the
number of fish sucked out is minimized. I’ve asked the people
who do our fish stocking and the ODNR in the past and both
thought that the amount of fish lost is minimal, they just adjust
to new areas of the lake versus being pulled out with the water.
In actuality, lowering the water level is probably one of the best
things we could do for our fish population and the overall health
of the lake. Draining through a siphon valve, as we do, pulls out
the low oxygen “dead” water from the bottom of the lake and
brings aerated surface water closer to bottom sediments which is
necessary for them to break down. This effect is multiplied greatly in the exposed areas and according to AquaticManagement.com “Water level control is the single most effective, efficient, and economical method of lake management.” That site
explains “When water covers a piece of ground, air is cut off from
it. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is a tiny fraction
of the amount of oxygen in the air (1/17500). Organic materials
that enter the water cannot be digested as quickly due to this
oxygen starvation. What happens over time is that the bottom of
your pond builds up a layer of black smelly material very much
like the sludge in a septic tank. When the water level is dropped,
it exposes some of this material to the air, sun, and freezing. This
allows the material to break down much faster in the air, while
drying and freezing kills many of the rooted aquatic weeds. The
organic bottom material is what supports the weed and algae
growth that causes so much trouble in ponds and lakes.”
So essentially, lowering the lake; protects docks and shorelines,
allows us to work on them easier, and creates a healthier and
more productive lake when re-flooded. Unfortunately, it does
mean that some members have to look at mud instead of water
for a portion of the winter, but hopefully knowing all this they’ll
better understand why we do it, if they didn’t already.
