Ski Touring with Glenmore Lodge
For centuries skis have been the most
efficient way to travel through the
mountains during winter and spring.
Glenmore Lodge also has a long tradition
of skiing, with many of our previous
instructors pioneering the development of
the sport in Scotland, especially in steep
skiing, making impressive first descents
across Scotland and the Alps.
Skiing off-piste and touring is a different
experience to bygone days. We no longer
use long thin skis with rear entry boots
and now have flotation and rockered
tips which allow greater movement. We
also have a new name to call our sport
– Freeride. There is no clear definition
of this term but to us it simply means
freedom to explore the mountains on skis
or boards in the style that suits you best.
For 2015 we continue to improve our
programme, with new venues and skis
which are set to make this the most
exciting programme to date. Our courses
are divided into 3 levels: Introduction,
Intermediate and Advanced making it
simple for you to select the right course.
Our skiing staff bring passion, knowledge
and expertise to every course and work
hard to tailor your experience.
We have forged a new partnership with
leading ski manufacturer, Black Crows,
and our staff have chosen to use their
skis this winter. We have selected an
impressive ski for you to use as you
‘Freeride’ the mountains of Scotland
and beyond.

Paddle Sports Qualification Credentials
Leadership Pathway
Coaching Pathway
If your main focus is to develop performance, including being able to get out and
paddle in great locations with the intention of progressing onto leading groups, then
our qualification pathway will be of interest. Starting with the 2 and 3 Star ‘personal
performance’ awards it moves onto 4 and 5 Star ‘leadership awards.
If your main paddling focus is to introduce people to paddling and help develop
performance, then the coaching pathway may be what you are looking for. Everyone
completes Levels 1 and 2 and after this there is a choice of continuing to develop
knowledge and ability.
Performance awards - 2 and 3 Star:
The 2 Star award focuses on the basic paddling skills for canoeing and kayaking.
It’s a pre-requisite for the UKCC Level 1 Coaching award and the 3 Star award can
be accessed with or without the 2 Star and is discipline specific. We offer the 3 Star
award in White Water, Sea, Canoe, Surf, Freestyle and Touring.
BCU (UKCC) Level 1 and 2 Coach award:
Level 1 coaches can introduce paddlers to any type of kayak or canoe through the
delivery of introductory sessions. Level 2 is about progressive sessions to develop
performance and understanding and you choose to be assessed in kayak, canoe
or kayak and canoe. Training and assessment involves candidates who will need to
complete an additional safety course for Level 1. Level 1 will be completed in a week
and Level 2 will usually take up to a year after completing the training course.
Leadership awards - 4 and 5 Star:
These awards are discipline specific and focus on personal performance, safety
and leadership in moderate and advanced water conditions. Upon completion the
paddler will be able to lead groups for clubs, friends or within a centre. A specific
safety course is also required prior to progressing onto the assessment. We offer
both 4 and 5 Star in White Water, Sea, Canoe and Surf, including the specific safety
courses. We also offer 4 Star in Touring.
After Level 2 you have the option of progressing down a coaching and/or
environment pathway.
Coaching Development Pathway - BCU (UKCC) Level 3 Coach award:
Focuses on developing the Level 2 holder’s ability to coach and develop paddlers
over a year-long programme in an individualised way that focuses on the learners
needs. The course is discipline specific and candidates are required to hold their
4 Star Leader award. The Level 3 programme involves a core training course,
discipline specific training and additional modules along with working with a
group of paddlers over one year to develop skills.
Environment Specific Pathway - Moderate and Advanced Water Endorsement:
Focuses on developing the Level 2 holder’s ability to work in a discipline specific
environment in moderate and advanced water, ensuring they are able to deliver
progressive sessions to assist other paddlers. Both endorsements include a training
course, require logged coaching experience and are then assessed. Candidates are
required to hold the 4 Star Leader award for the Moderate Water Endorsement and
5 Star Leader award for the Advanced Water Endorsement. It usually takes 1 to 2
years to complete these endorsements. We offer these in White Water, Sea, Canoe
and Surf.

Orienteering
Biathlon
Heading
The National Orienteering Centre,
based at Glenmore Lodge, provides a
range of exciting and enjoyable courses
for people wishing to teach or coach
orienteering at a variety of levels. All of
the courses are highly practical and give
participants lots of ideas, and a useful
set of resources for use in their own
sessions.
Biathlon is traditionally a winter sport that
combines cross-country skiing and rifle
shooting. It’s a unique combination of
strength, physical fitness and endurance,
with the skill, finesse and millimetre
precision needed in rifle shooting.
In the UK due to the lack of year round
snow, snow skiing is replaced with roller
skiing, enabling athletes to train all year
round in warmer conditions. Glenmore
Lodge has the UK’s only dedicated
biathlon training facility with a strength
and conditioning gym, a 50m range and
1.4 km of roller-ski track covering a range
of gradients.
Our Teaching Orienteering courses
are extremely popular with teachers
and youth leaders and require no prior
knowledge. The UKCC courses lead
to formal qualifications and require
participants to show evidence of
competence at orienteering.
Teaching Orienteering (Part 1) - 1 day
Learn the basic orienteering skills and techniques plus lots of useful ways to teach
in schools and youth groups. Covering techniques that are frequently used when
orienteering in parks and small local woods, this 1-day course includes indoor and
outdoor activities and is highly practical. The course provides recognised CPD and
there is no assessment.
UKCC Level 1 Award in Coaching Orienteering - 3 days
Learn how to teach and coach orienteering in a wide variety of environments, up
to TD3 (Orange) standard. We use various delivery methods to introduce you to
exercises with which you can teach and practise all of the necessary skills. The
course is largely practical with some written tasks. Assessment is by written tasks
and observed delivery of a coaching session on day 3 of the course.
Teaching Orienteering (Part 2) - 1 day
Develop knowledge of orienteering to cover techniques used in more complex
areas; learn more techniques, games and exercises to develop those skills in young
people. The course is more outdoors-based than Part 1, and is again highly practical
and interactive. As with Part 1, it is recognised CPD, and does not involve any
assessment.
UKCC Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Orienteering Training - 3 days
The Level 2 Coach is qualified to prepare a series of progressive coaching sessions,
helping athletes to develop their skills up to TD5. This course develops the planning
and evaluation skills introduced at Level 1, as well as showing a number of effective
practical exercises to develop the techniques. We also look at psychological aspects
of performance and how to help athletes plan for a competition season. Assessment
is by written tasks and observed delivery of a coaching session at a later date.
Introduction to Biathlon - 4 days
Learn the core skills of prone and standing shooting at 50m targets, as well as basic
roller-skiing. You’ll get the benefit of guidance from an ex-Olympic athlete as we look
at general fitness instruction, a must for this hugely demanding activity. The course
will include video analysis to help support your development throughout the week.
Advanced Biathlon - 4 days
If you’ve mastered a 20 shot shooting score of more than 120 (10 prone, 10 stand),
can handle challenging hill climbs on roller-skis, and have plenty of fitness and
enthusiasm, then this is the course for you. Enhance your skills and techniques and
gain control over your rifle while shooting out of breath.
Intermediate Biathlon - 4 days
Designed for those with some shooting experience, this course is an opportunity to
enhance your shooting and roller-ski skills. Roller-ski coaching includes more emphasis
on advanced skating techniques. The course includes video analysis and general
fitness instruction.
Roller-skiing - 4 days
Roller skis are designed to closely match the action and performance of skis,
enabling athletes to train all year round in warm weather conditions. It is an excellent
cross-training alternative for athletes, providing a complete workout for all muscle
groups in one activity. This course will teach the basics for both classic and skating
techniques.
