the Catalogue Live your legend SURF NO SHAPING MACHINES, NO COMPUTERS, NO POP OUT MOULDS ONLY THE HUMAN HAND When the wind and waves surround you, take the leap on a VanHunks shortboard. Our shortboards are designed and built to international standards and offer a great ride in a variety of conditions. These boards are made for all-round performance, including fast entries, tricks, easy turning and great maneuverability. Generally suited to a slightly more experienced surfer, our shortboards offer a single to double concave bottom contour through the tail, a variety of designs and attractive, long-lasting finishes. VanHunks handshaped surfboards set a new industry standard in surfboard construction. After years of testing, using the highest quality materials available, our own specially formulated foam core, with our precise measuring system enabled us to produce world-class shapes with an unparalleled balance of performance, speed, optimal flex, strength and durability. VanHunks surfboards are hand shaped, hand-glassed, hand-sanded, and hand-finished by local South African craftsmen. VanHunks unique construction process maximizes impact and tensile strength, while minimizing and accurately controlling final weight, and retaining a high-tech flex. Swallow Tail Squash Tail SURF The Swallowtail is an easy one to spot for the novice RATING The Swallowtail combines the rail drive of the squaretail and the sensitivity of the pintail - this is the tail shape used on fish surfboards. The wider tail gives better paddling power and increased drive in smaller waves. The swallow tail is related to the squash tail, in that it provides more surface area from rail to rail, allowing for planing speed and lift. Speed Turning Stability SURF The Squashtail is the most common tail shape. RATING The squashtail is very responsive. This board design provides all the surface and playing area of a round tail, contributing to speed and lift, helping to maintain speed in lower spots. The rounded corners provide a bit more bite and control than the round tail, and the square end allows the board to release. The corners allow for more pivotal, abrupt turns off the bottom or on the face, but will provide less release off the top. Carbon fibre composite is commonly used when building satellites, planes, formula racing cars and high performance kite-boards. ABS SIDE WALL Our boards are UV-protected to ensure the sun won’t break down the composites used in the construction of the board or fade the design. T12 BOTTOM We use ABS-sidewall technology for the rails of our Twin-Tip boards. An ABS-sidewall allows a board to be more stable at speeds, have more pop and accelerate faster. The T12 bottom on our Twin-Tp boards reduces the scratch when riding over sand or rocks. CHANNELS 1.75 CM G10 FINS Channels allow for more grip and control over the board at high-speed and during hard landing. Especially if the board is ridden without fins, channels still maintain the ability to ride upwind and control edging. The Vanhunks signature G10 fins are indestructible! The fins offer excellent control over the tips and radically increase the board’s upwind riding performance. STANCE 51 / 55 / 59 FUTURES FINS The stance can be adjusted according to your preference. The stance width on a kiteboard has a huge impact on the characteristics of the board. A wide stance (59) allows the rider to apply their weight along the edge which drastically improves pop and landings. A narrow stance (51) will improve the board’s performance and upwind abilities of the board in light wind conditions. We use Futures Fins (LINK: http://www.futuresfins.com/index.php) with all our Directional-, Surf- and SUP boards. PAULOWNIA WOOD CORE 3D BOTTOM Each of our boards has their own unique 3D bottom design. Our boards offer all components of modern board-design: a solid rocker, concave and channels. The design elements are carefully balanced according to the desired performance. Paulownia wood is dimensionally very stable and is not subject to warping, cupping or splitting, even when exposed to outdoor elements. It also has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any wood, which makes it the perfect core for our boards. TIP 2 TIP FLEX TECHNOLOGY BIAX GLASS Our Flex2Flex Technology creates a dynamic ride that responds accordingly to different riding environments. A combination of top quality Biax Glass fabrics with PVC layers on deck and bottom of the board strengthen the board and offer an excellent durability to weight ratio. CROSS FLEX Our Cross-Flex Technology defines a smooth flex throughout the whole board from tip to tip as well as from rail to rail. +27 21 556 4398 | [email protected] | 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town +27 21 556 4398 | [email protected] | 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town technology SINGLE CONCAVE EPS-FOAM CONSTRUCTION The single concave increases the stability of the board, making it easy to edge and thus promoting upwind performance. A smoother ride will increase the board’s speed and maintain consistent edge control. SINGLE 2 DOUBLE CONCAVE This is lightweight beaded foam is used in the production of epoxy surfboards. We use only the best EPS density foam for the core of our boards. The EPS foam is wrapped in an epoxy sandwich construction. THRUSTER FIN SETUP The single to double concave utilises the strengths of each concave design. A single concave upfront provides a good planing surface for drive and the double concave in the rear loosens up the board. The double concave will actually channel the water into two streams through the fins and out the tail. Smooth edge to edge transitioning adds fluidity to wave riding. The thruster setup is versatile and strong in a wide range of conditions. It combines stability, drive and maneuverability and has been one of the favorite fin setups of the past quarter century. TWIN FIN SETUP SHALLOW SINGLE CONCAVE A shallow concave allows the board to maintain the features of our single concave, best possible upwind performance and edge control in a variety of conditions. Twin fins offer a maneuverable and fast ride. Their quickness and ability to make sharp turns makes them a great choice for small wave and choppy conditions. QUAD FIN SETUP SWALLOW TAIL Boards with a swallow or fish tail are generally used in smaller waves and offer great drive, control and speed. Our swallow tail offers the ultimate surf feel. The quad fin setup makes for more drive through turns and increased speed down the line. It allows for a powerful rail to rail riding at high speeds. EPOXY RESIN GLASSING ROUND TAIL The increased surface area of the round tail gives the board more lift in the rear and allows for a looser, more turnable board. We use the best epoxy resin for our sandwich constructions. Epoxy constructions stand for durability, low porosity and strong bond strength. SQUASH TAIL The squash tail is the most common tail shape on modern surfboards. The design allows for a stable board, and a maneuverable ride, suitable for both small and overhead waves. +27 21 556 4398 | [email protected] | 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town +27 21 556 4398 | [email protected] | 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town technology DROP DECK CUSHION: SUPER HIGH REBOUND 82A The drop-deck ensures a stable deck and maximum control at high speeds. A must-have for steep downhill riding or races. The drop-deck is designed for high speeds, downhilling, carving and also cruising. This drop-down is solid with its hard Canadian Maple 10 plies and can hold weights up to 320 LBs. The deck sits lower to the ground for more control and stability. Used for the best balance between control , performance and comfort. 7 PLY & 10 PLY CONSTRUCTIONS TRUCK: 7’ REVERSIBLE TRUCK The reversible trucks allow you to reverse the kingpin if you like the feel of it. The reverse kingpin is designed to allow for more carving and “turn-ability”. Your reverse kingpin trucks will allow you to turn smoothly and effortlessly whether they’re standard or reverse kingpin. WHEEL: SHR 78A 69 X 55MM PU WHEEL Vanhunks decks are available in 7 and 10-ply construction. You can choose whether you prefer a light-weight or ultra durable board. Our decks are formed using a ply construction, where veneers are layered on top of one another. To start, the veneers are stacked on top of one another with the grains running lengthwise. A few of the veneers are turned so that the grains run widthwise, a technique known as cross-beaming, to add strength across the board. They are glued into place before going under the hydraulic press to be formed. The pressure from the press structures the layers of maple sheets into a single, dense strip with an upturned nose and tail and a concave center. We use SHR 78A wheels on all our boards. Great durability and low traction for maximum speed and an endless glide. What does 78A mean? Skateboard wheels come in a variety of colours, sizes and degrees of hardness. Skateboard wheels have two stats: • Diameter, which means how tall the wheel is. This is measured in millimetres (mm) for skateboard wheels. The larger the wheel, the faster the skate, due to reduced rolling resistance. Wheels in the 72-mm to 80-mm range are just right for recreational and fitness skating. They provide good maneuverability and speed for skating longer distances on trails. • Durometer, which means how hard the wheels are. Most skateboard wheels use what’s called the “a-scale”, the higher the number, the harder the wheel. For example, you’ll see the hardness of the wheels written “a95” for an average street skateboarding wheel. Softer wheels can be all the way down to a70, or even lower. The larger the wheel, the faster you skate due to reduced rolling resistance. Wheels in the 72-mm to 80-mm range are just right for recreational and fitness skating. They provide good maneuverability and speed for skating longer distances on trails. CONCAVE The deck is shaped with a single concave for increased control throughout your ride. Vanhunks longboards are designed for cruising and downhill madness and have the perfect concave to control your board. The depth of the curve is important for mastering tricks and a deeper curve allows for more precision tricks. DROP-THROUGH AT THE FRONT The front drop-through truck increases the stability of your board on fast rides. It ensures a great control over your board in even the sharpest turns. A lower center of gravity makes these longer boards more stable and easier to push. The flex of these boards also acts as a dampening system to help avoid discomfort on longer rides. BEARING: ABEC 5 CHROME At the core of our boards, we use ABEC5 Chrome Swiss Bearings. These bearings offer a longlasting glide and speed. ABEC (Annular Bearing Engineers’ Committee), which is the American method for rating the accuracy and tolerance of bearings. So what does it mean? Bearing are used for all kinds of things, not just skateboard wheels. The higher an ABEC rating, the more accurate and precise the bearing is. +27 21 556 4398 | [email protected] | 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town +27 21 556 4398 | [email protected] | 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town Get in touch Phone: +27 21 556 4398 Email: [email protected] Skype: Vanhunks Boarding 2 Marine Circle Table View Cape Town
