July 2015 - Gulf Coast Runners
SOUTHWEST trides JULY 2015 ART RG H NO MITC Have you heard of the Blue Zone Project? If so, I hope you are living by its guidelines. If not, please read on. It may help you, your family and friends to live a longer, healthier and happier life! The Blue Zone Project started as a lifestyle study on five areas in the world where people live longer. Based upon this research it was found that people who are physically active, eat primarily a plant based diet and socialize more with friends and family tend to live a longer and happier life. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, where we are currently from a standpoint of obesity, morbidity and life expectancy it is a formidable task to achieve. However, with the leadership of NCH CEO, Dr. Allen Weiss and financial support of Naples Community Hospital, Naples will become a Blue Zone community! As you educate yourself about the Blue Zone Project you quickly realize this is a community-based effort. It requires that not only do we as individuals need to change our poor lifestyle habits but also it requires our grocery stores, restaurants and community leaders change the way they provide products and services to us as concerned and tax paying citizens. For example, does your favorite restaurant feature a vegetarian or plant based menu? Does your favorite grocery store have an organic section? Does your child have the option of choosing healthier food at their school cafeteria and can they walk or bike safely to school? Do we have complete streets in Naples where we have easily accessible sidewalks and bike lanes? The answer may be “yes” to these questions but we can all agree there is a greater need for healthier options for all. It’s about a total lifestyle makeover… but it’s one that is good for you and fun to implement. So, you may ask, “How does Gulf Coast Runners fit in to this Blue Zone Project?” Think about it, GCR has been in existence for over 40 years in Naples and has engaged and encouraged thousands of residents and visitors with our healthy lifestyle activities of running and walking through the thousands of events we have staged over four decades! But, we can do more and with your help we will positively impact the lives of so many more people. (50% of the deaths in Collier County are preventable through exercise.) To start, Blue Zone sponsor, NCH will be the presenting sponsor of the 2016 Naples Daily News Half Marathon! Voted one of the best half marathons in the country, this GCR event is our flagship race which will host nearly 2,500 runners (50 Olympic contenders) and walkers on January 17, 2016. The symbiotic partnership between NCH and GCR is and will be vital to the health of our community for years to come. We are honored to be involved with NCH! Another example of our Blue Zone involvement is with Collier County Public Schools. CCPS Superintendent, Dr. Kamela Patton has asked GCR to stage a run/walk in the coming school year where students, their parents and CCPS staff members can participate in not only a run or a walk but also in a health fair on a Saturday morning this fall or winter. This event will be a spring board for the creation of Blue Zones within all 50 schools with all 44,000 students and 7,000 staff members subscribing to a healthier lifestyle! We will make a big announcement once a date has been finalized. As you can well imagine, Gulf Coast Runners plans to be at the forefront of the Blue Zone Project. This means that you, as a member and ambassador of GCR will have the opportunity to be involved with making Naples one of the healthiest and happiest cities in the USA! Stay tuned….you’ll hear more from me on this exciting and important topic! Best, P.S. To learn more about the Blue Zone Project go online to www.nchmd.org/blue-zones FROM GCR COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR [email protected] One of the great things about being a runner in Southwest Florida is that there are so many opportunities for participating in local races. Whether they are 5k’s, 10k’s, or even half marathons a runner has their choice of local races year around. Gulf Coast Runners alone puts on more than 20 races annually! We at GCR are excited to see the increasing participation level at these races, and that our local active community is constantly growing! Did you know that GCR not only hosts many races throughout the calendar year, but we also have weekly and seasonal opportunities to run, stay fit, and enjoy the camaraderie of other local runners? Every week GCR hosts group runs on several different days and times of the week! Check out our weekly schedule: Mondays ..........6:00 pm.....Naples on the Run ................... 4 Mile Recovery Run through Gordon River Greenway Wednesdays ....6:00 pm.....Naples Beach Club & Hotel...... 3 Mile Run followed by Gulf Swim Thursdays ........6:00 am .....Artis-Naples ............................ 6 Mile Run through Pelican Bay Fridays.............6:00 pm.....Naples Beach Club & Hotel...... JOE FRIDAY & JUST THE FACTS by Dan McDonald First of all, summer is here….the heat is back, no school buses, our seasonal guests are back in Woonsocket or Toledo or Staten Island. We don’t have to add time to our daily commute and getting a seat in a restaurant doesn’t require “The Early Bird” menu! So what is increasing? I’ll tell you. The runners, the cyclists and the walkers are out and their presence is steadily becoming more prevalent. The effort and enthusiasm for fitness is impressive. But what do we have to remember? What’s the last thing you are told or you tell your significant other when they walk out the door and press the start button? Be Careful….Watch out….Be Safe….Pay Attention to Traffic!!! With that in mind, I want to clarify a few points when it comes to safety. Most any athlete likely has been “buzzed” or pushed off their line. In the worst case scenario, we likely know someone who has been hit by a car while working out. None of us will ever question an athlete’s rights and the motorist’s need to Share the Road. However, we also know that however right we are, when it’s us versus a vehicle, we always lose when it comes to injuries, medical bills and convalescence. What I’d like to do is to review is the Rules of the Road. It’s simple, but sometimes it gets distorted with opinion, rules of other states or simple assumption. To make it simple: If you’re riding a bike on the sidewalk, you’re a pedestrian. If you’re riding a bike in the road, you are a motorist and all the rules apply. Riding in the road always requires riding with the flow of traffic and without headphones or texting. When it comes to running, we cannot run in a bike lane, with or against traffic, we can’t do it. The ONLY time is if there is an impediment, like a sidewalk under construction or no sidewalk at all. In the instance of sidewalk repair, we can enter the shoulder of the road and return to the sidewalk immediately after the sidewalk access is restored. If an accessible sidewalk or path exists, we must use it and not use the road. It’s the safest and it’s the law. PLEASE have an awesome summer. You deserve it. Please be safe, be smart and go be great. The world of endurance athletes is full of inspirational stories, unbelievable people and remarkable camaraderie. You are all inspirations to others, whether you know it or not. Lead others by example! Until next time – It’s Just the Facts!!! Once you can do that you train to be able to run it faster. The core elements of training are endurance, speed and recovery. Endurance is gained through long runs of at least the intended race distance. Speed is gained through tempo runs at the desired race pace, repeat intervals at slightly faster than race pace with recovery between intervals, and shorter repeat intervals at faster pace. or fartlek (speed play). Recovery is easy runs at a comfortable pace and should be done on the days following a hard training session. My recommendation is that you alternate weekly long runs with long interval sessions. Repeat 800,s for 5 k , repeat 1 miles for 10 k , repeat 2 miles for half marathons and repeat 3 miles / 4 miles for the marathon. These can be done on the road once you have measured your intervals. 80% of ingredients in beauty products have never been tested for safety. Within the 2 week cycle you should also include one session of repeat 200 s or fartlek. For the club runs Saturdays as above. Mondays could be made more interesting by breaking the group up into smaller groups ( 3 to 6 ) after a mile warm up and have them do “ Indian file “ where the front runner sets a pace for up to a quarter mile ( their choice of distance ) the next runner goes to the front and decides on the recovery pace/distance and then does their interval. Repeat through the group. This is a fun form of fartlek. Thursdays could include sections of tempo of varying distances. Even more troubling, chemicals linked with breast cancer, learning disabilities, infertility and other health issues are allowed in the products we use every day. We deserve better and we’re doing something about it. WELCOME TO BEAUTYCOUNTER. Beautiful products, made safe. Kara Tabler [email protected] http://karadown.beautycounter.com THE BOSTON MARATHON. THE BIG ONE. The race where you run the same course, same conditions, same day as the best runners in the world. I have run it 9 times, and have a mini streak going for the last five years in a row. I hope to continue, but I did not always give this race the respect it deserves. When I was younger and running much faster than I do now, I considered Boston too crowded, too gimmicky, too much hoopla. and I sat in athlete’s village and found a little cover under a tarp. Someone gave us a plastic sheet to sit on. The rain stopped a little and they called out the first wave. Then, Lindsay left to go with the second wave. Then, it was my turn to walk the mile to the start corrals. by Erica Szilagyi-Norgart I first ran it in the 1980’s, then a couple of times in the 1990’s, but when I turned 40 I thought marathons were taking a toll on my body so I focused more on triathlon. For my 50th birthday I set a goal to qualify for Boston again. I had not run a marathon in ten years. I only ran 3 days a week and swam and biked the other and I made it back to the big one! This time it was different. As my running has become slower I have learned to appreciate this amazing race. The hoopla and the gimmicks are much more appealing. I know that this athletic life cannot last forever. I’ve seen lots of incredible runners who can’t even jog anymore. So, I ran it that year. And I’ve been back every year since. My husband Mitch ran with me back in the 1990’s but through the last four years he has been my support. He was not able to go this year, so I brought my oldest daughter Julia. We stayed in a hostel near the finish and had a great time interacting with all the European marathoners who also stayed there. It was so much fun showing her the city on race weekend. No race city can compare to the support that Boston gives its marathoners. Race morning came and it was cold and raining. Lindsay Metcalf As I was standing with my wave to start, I was thinking how grateful I was to be there. To still be able to do it. Twenty years ago, I would have been complaining about the poor conditions, worrying about how it was going to affect my race finish time, but all I felt was grateful! I can’t even remember most of the race. I know I ran with a few people. Some went ahead, some fell behind. I remember going through the halfway point with the Wellesley girls screaming. I remember heartbreak hill and being amazed there were still so many people all the way even though it was cold and raining. I remember my daughter coming out and cheering for me at mile 24. That was special and very emotional! As I was passing Fenway Park, I saw a sign that said 1 mile to go. I looked down at my watch and thought to myself that if I ran an 8:30 mile I could break 4 hours. I was hurting, but I felt that was doable. Instead, I decided to really ‘feel’ that last mile. The crowds hanging out of bars cheering you on….The last stretch to the finish….There is nothing like it! I finished this years’ Boston in my slowest time ever, but it doesn’t matter so much anymore. I will be back again next year because the city, the athletes, the course support, history and hoopla make it like no other. And now, I appreciate it all! 10% DISCO GCR MEMUNT BERS www.naplestriathletes.com est. 1994 RUNNER SAFETY TIPS If you run on the road where there are motor vehicles or cyclists please run against traffic at all times. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to take a group of talented runner’s of all distances to the State Track and Field Meet as we have the past 3 years. There were some spectacular finishes such as Nick Kamen taking 1st place in his heat for the 1500m and 5th in the 3000m with times of 4:38 and 9:48 respectively on the state level! Andrew Shepherd was just ahead of him with a 4th place finish of 9:45 in the 3000! We had a great showing throughout a wide variety of events and again that couldn’t be possible without you! Summer session has just begun and what a better way to start than with the summer run for fun series! For the 4th year in a row Gulf Coast Runners Youth Team is sharing the track with the Kiwanis Club for 8 weeks during the summer on Monday’s to have some fun competition in the 1600, 100, 400, 800, 200, and long jump, shot-put, and discus. Practices are all still the same on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:45 and Saturday mornings from 9:00-10:15. It is hot out there so make sure to bring water or sports drink. From the webmaster, Gulf Coast Runner’s Youth Team now has an independent address from Gulf Coast Runner’s. While Running while Traveling by Cliff Elam Most people who travel stay at the same hotel chain to maximize their reward points and fly the same airline to maximize miles. In the past several weeks I’ve been to Raleigh, Bogota, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Omaha, Charlottesville, and Boston. That is a lot of time sitting in airplanes, wandering airports full of unhealthy food, and eating in “expense account” restaurants. So I pick my hotel after checking the city on Strava to see where people are running. And I pick my flights so that I can either get in a morning or afternoon run when I get where I’m going. But I don’t run just to combat the inevitable Fat Bastardization of my cough middle aged cough body. It’s also because if you don’t run then inevitably you only see the hotel, the cab, and the office. So let me give you the inevitable three reasons I run on business trips: One: It is always great to get out and run in a new city. I ran through Sao Paulo’s version of central park with a group of 40+ runners who were very kind to me and jollied me along at what I thought was high altitude (750M). A few days later I was trotting along Paseo De La Reforma in Mexico City wondering when I was going to drop dead due to altitude (2500M) when the local university 10K track squad passed me. Six times. I swear one of them was drinking a cup of coffee on the first lap. I saw one smoke a ciggie during the warm down walk. I would hesitate to say that all the running was great due to the extreme variation in conditions including: 12 degree hills, 2500 meters altitude, airborne filth, broken/missing sidewalks, and the occasional short nights sleep with a side of mild hangover. But I will say that I was always glad I got up and went out. And there were some transcendental moments – clearing a hill in the mountains at sunrise, rounding a corner and seeing bridges reflected in a city park lake, …. It may be a coincidence, but I’ve never had the TSA open my bag you can still access the site from the Main Gulf Coast Runner’s page, please note and bookmark our new web address: gcryouthteam.org We’re also planning on starting an email list for those who have signed up that will have at most bi-weekly updates and important news. We’re excited to see all the new names and faces signing up. This summer so far has had the more newcomers than we’ve seen for a while! Can’t wait to see you all out on the track! For those looking to sign up you can visit the website above which has a ton of information to inform yourself with the club. Or you can contact coach Erica at 239-404-5023. when I have seven days of sweaty running clothes bundled into hotel room dry cleaning bags. To summarize: see the place you visit without being a tourist. Two: I think semi-serious recreational running is a universal sport. I jogged down the Charles River in Boston with a guy from the Ukraine (please imagine a hairy fireplug wearing Bill Clinton shorty shorts telling potato jokes) who was staying at the same hotel. I also got a great running course reccy for Omaha from a very nice Canadian guy I met on the plane from Virginia. (Yes, he once vacationed in Naples.) And a large group of friendly Brazilians took me on a 10 mile running tour of Sao Paolo. Fantastic events. Amusingly some guy ran up to me in Mexico City with a GoPro on a selfie stick, chattered at me in what I swear was Portuguese while recording us, slapped me a high five, and dashed off. I have no idea what that was about. Or if he understood that I didn’t understand. To summarize: meet neat people when you travel. Three: Golden Holier Than Thou Halo. We all know that we have more energy when we run our training plan. And eat right. And sleep a full measure. And avoid alcohol. And then there is the real world where all those things go out the window when the wine list lands in your lap at dinner. So getting up early to run may be the only part of your day/night where you can exercise and get your mental/physical balance back. It’s also the only time where you will not be piled up on co-workers in tight conference rooms. Plus, and this is what makes up for the 5am alarm in an unfamiliar hotel room after some darn Beaujolais colored elf has glued your eyes shut – you’re likely to be the only one who is peppy and has actual blood flow. And, as you chipper yourself up and give your presentation, you can bask in the warm glow that comes from avoiding the sticky carbs that litter conferences. (Unless there are scones – these are a mystical foreign health food and should always be consumed.) To summarize: run to feel good about the overall journey no matter what. 2425 Tamiami Tr N | Naples, FL 34103 239.434.2800 | www.BighamJewelers.com If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere. ~Frank A. MyLaps is one of the premier sports timing equipment companies in the world and has been in business since 1982. Their timing hardware is used to time many elite events around the world, including the Boston Marathon. MyLaps bib timing hardware is state of the art and designed to be used specifically with timing devices worn on a race bib. As a result the timing device itself is quite small, about the size of a stick of gum. Runners should hardly notice the timing device is there. MyLaps bib tags offer some of the best reliability in the industry, boasting an impressive 99.80% read rate average. You learn something every day if you pay attention. ~Ray LeBlond Mitchell L. Norgart The timing mats the system uses are modular rubber which is durable and low profile, creating less of a trip hazard for runners. When combining this new hardware with existing partnership Gulf Coast Runners has with RunSignUp, runners can expect big race technology, features and reliability in even the smallest GCR event. We are excited to implement this improvement to our race timing capabilities. Look for the new MyLaps system at our next race, the Moe’s Firecracker 5K on July 4th! We reached another plateau together and I could not be more proud to be a fellow member of Gulf Coast Runners with you! Amazingly, 27 Collier County high school seniors received a record-breaking total of $45,500 in college scholarship funds this school year and it was largely due to you registering for GCR races and contributing to our Gold Medal Club/ Youth Development Fund! While there were many generous individuals who donated to the GCR Youth Development Fund, we earned the majority of the funds through the Naples Half Marathon registration fees and other club owned races throughout the year. While this not a staggering amount of money, it is quite an accomplishment for a non-profit running club in a small town called Naples, Florida! So, be proud, pound your chest and let everyone know you helped raise these much needed scholarship dollars! Each of these student/athletes exemplify what we all expect from the best of the best! They showed dedication, a strong work ethic, sportsmanship and an unending desire to excel throughout their high school career. Gulf Coast Runners is happy and fortunate to watch these young adults grow to be leaders and role models in their community. Many have come back to live, run and mentor others in Naples. The Gold Medal 5K, Run for the Music 10K, Tropicool 5k, and Race Judicata 5K are in the books. Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we’re made of. That’s why I love to run. I am a leader in Naples real estate because I bring the same intensity to doing whatever it takes to create the win for my clients, to ensure their success every day. I am part of a real estate team that consistently ranks in the top 10 of all real estate professionals in the United States because I never, never give up. May I help you? Yasmin Saad, P.A. T he July 4th Moe’s Firecracker 5K, the September 5th John Clay 5K, the November 14th Old Naples 10K (note change in date), and the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5K are still to be run. Awards for the series are based on you having run at least four o f the s eries races. So even if you have not yet run in a series race you still have fourraces left that will make you eligible. If you have run in some of the earlier races you should continue to run the rest of the series races as it will be your fourbest races that will determine your final placement in the series. The top 10 m ales and the Top 10 females overall in the s eries will be presented great prizes at the s eries awards ceremony to be held at the GCR annual party in December. Again, scoring for the s eries is based on age graded scoring for each s eries race. Check out the GCR website for the current leaders in the s eries and a more detailed explanation as to how age graded scoring works. Train hard and race fast !See you at the Moe’s Firecracker 5Kon July 4th morning at Fleischmann Park!
