359: Maya Polychrome Vessel, Enema Ritual Scene
USD 1,500 - 2,000
A rare type of Pre-Columbian Maya polychrome footed vessel depicting ritual enema use. Circa 600 A.D. – 900 A.D. This
example measures approximately 6 ½” wide by about 4 ¾” tall, and depicts two Individuals around the exterior scene engaged
in self-administering enemas. The ancient artist employed a technique that has been referred to by modern scholars as “X-ray”
view to show the syringe (stem) of the enema being inserted into the hind-quarters of each individual in the scene. It is well
documented that the ancient Maya used enemas ritually to introduce potent alcohol and hallucinogenic substances into the
bloodstream (via the Colon, where the substances can be absorbed rapidly and without loss of potency). This was done for the
purpose of inducing an altered state of consciousness, whereby the participant could engage in powerful shamanic visions.
Such enema use was but one of the many exceedingly risky ways by which the ancient Maya sought to shock their bodies for
the purpose of inducing altered states of consciousness and visions. The risks associated underscore the importance they
placed on such ritual activities, as well as the seriousness with which they approached them. Vessels depicting these enema
ritual scenes are relatively rare, and this is an exceptional example of the type. See Peter deSmet’s important work “Ritual
Enemas and Snuffs in the Americas”, pages 233 & 234, for comparable examples of this exact type of scene on Maya vessels,
and for excellent scholarly info on this little-known subject related to ancient Maya ritual. Provenance: Former Rafael Moses

important artifacts. The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

that of a Lord seated upon what appears to be steps. He is attended by a standing figure that is holding a canopy over him,
while two others address him from his right. One is kneeling and the other is standing behind him as they present what appears
to be a large plumed headdress. Each of the figures is wearing an elaborate headdress, many in the forms of animal heads. The

Rare Pre-Columbian Toltec carved stone fragment from Pre-Columbian Mexico, circa 900 A.D. – 1200 A.D. Pre-Columbian
Toltec material is rare to come available in private collections. This piece displays impressively, measuring approximately 13
1/2” tall by about 10 1/2” wide (fragment alone, unmounted) and about 16 1/2” tall (mounted on the included museum quality
custom display). This represents a large fragment from a larger stone frieze, made up from multiple stone panels, each
depicting carved elements of an overall scene. The style of the carved iconography suggests that this piece likely originated
from the vicinity of the ancient site of Tula, and shows a reclining figure, totemic-like elements, zoomorphic creatures and
stylized palm-like motifs- all typical for Toltec art of that general location. Strong remnants of original red pigment (likely
Cinnabar) remain, used to accent portions of the carved scene. The stone fragment is securely supported by the included
display mount, yet is easily removable at will from the stand without risk of damage in doing so. Provenance: Former
Connecticut, USA private collection, acquired in 1947. The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.
397: Pre-Columbian Aztec Stone Figure
USD 2,500 - 4,000
An Aztec carved stone sculpture depicting a seated individual or deity. From Pre-Columbian Mexico, circa 1300 A.D. – 1500
A.D. This example measures approximately 10” tall by about 6 ½” deep and about 5 ½” wide, and is carved from a single block
of stone having a faint pinkish-red tint, as is typical for authentic examples. Aztec stone sculpture is relatively rare to come
available in private collections, particularly complete examples such as this one (most are fragmentary and/or heavily damaged).
This piece depicts a seated individual or deity, shown wearing head ornamentation displaying the eye and tooth iconography
associated with the deity Tlaloc. As such, he represents either a manifestation of the deity himself, or a costumed ritual
participant/impersonator as a stand-in for the deity. Provenance: Former Texas, USA private collection. The starting price is the
price at which the piece can sell.
