When you think about how technology has transformed
our lives, it’s truly amazing. Through technological
innovations, we have automated the otherwise laborintensive functions. Take personal banking for example,
just few years ago, we were still required to physically
go to the bank to get any kind of transactions done
from opening an account to understanding investments.
Today all the information you need is available at your
fingertips with just a click. Through mobile apps, we
can now cater to our banking needs even when on the
move. Technology is an enabler. It is interesting to observe how it has transformed
business operations in all spheres.
The advent of e-commerce has given the power to businesses to remain close to
customers throughout the day. The sustainable business model has not only impacted
customers’ behavior but also contributed to the stiff competition in the market.
With growing focus on services, the B2B e-commerce platform has proved to be apt
and influential to the business environment. Forbes predicts the B2B e-commerce
market to be worth $6.7 trillion by 2020. It is expected to be two times bigger than the
B2C market within the same time period, according to the business magazine. A good
example of a company that has grown in this space is Alibaba, which has recorded
more trade volume than Amazon and eBay put together.
Streamlining and simplifying business processes remain one of the top priorities for an
organization. Leveraging automation tools and learning about best B2B e-commerce
practices are worth the time and investment. Partners need to further couple the
benefits of these strategies with CRM or loyalty programs to derive best results.
Considering the evolving market dynamics and the increasing competition, channel
players need to look at all mediums to grow profitably.

Google Nexus 6
Motorola’s latest launch, Nexus 6 is apt for users
to not only get work done but also to enjoy videos
and playing games. The pixel-rich 6-inch Quad HD
display enables this and more. The dual frontfacing speakers provide immersive stereo sound
to further enhance the user’s experience. Powered
with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core
2.7GHz processor, the device is capable of highperformance multi-tasking and the Adreno 420
GPU gives the users good graphics. Equipped with
an f2.0 and 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization capture, users can take great
pictures in daylight and low light. With just 15 minutes of charging, users can get up to 6 hours of
use and thanks to a large 3220 mAh battery, users get over 24 hours of use from a full charge.
Being a Google phone, users will enjoy the latest updates before others in the market and it
currently works on Android Lollypop OS.

OneTouch Idol 3
Alcatel has launched two smartphones under its
flagship OneTouch Idol 3 moniker, offering unique
reversible user experience, outstanding music quality
and professional-like camera capabilities. One has
4.7” screen, while the other a 5.5” screen, targeting
different users. Weighing just 110g, it boasts HD IPS
display, quad core CPU and symmetrical design.
More importantly, Idol 3 provides Hi-Fi sound and has
powerful front speakers featuring JBL technology and
first tailor-made Music Center. The 13Mxpl rear cam coupled with 8Mxpl front cam offers wideviewing angle and great sunlight legibility. The unique reversible user experience of the phone
means use it either way, the UI always gets in place, and comes with a back cover in matt with hair
brushed effect, which is pleasant to touch and easy to grip.
Moto 360
Xtouch P-Phone
The Moto 360 features a 1.56-inch edge-to-edge round
display maximizing the user’s viewing experience. It has a
resolution of 320 x 290 pixels with 205 ppi for richer detail.
The watch is designed using the damage resistant Corning
Gorilla Glass for the display and a high-quality stainless steel
case. Made using the finest raw materials, the Horween
leather bands add a touch of elegance to the 360. The watch
displays notifications based on the user’s location, be it
weather, flight alerts or traffic. A light vibration ensures that
the user is notified of incoming or missed calls, text messages
and emails. Users can also talk to their Moto 360 through
the ‘Ok Google’ feature. The watch is designed with an inbuilt pedometer and a heart rate monitor that keeps a track
of steps and heart rate. With the heart activity app using the daily and weekly benchmarks,
customers can effectively track progress towards their goals. Powered by a 320mAh battery
that can last all day, the Moto 360 can be wirelessly charged. Running on Android wear, the
watch can be paired with smartphones that run on Android 4.3 or higher. The watch comes
with 4 GB of internal storage and 512 MB of RAM for a smooth performance.
Xtouch P-Phone is a 4-in-1 feature phone that
combines phone, power bank, flashlight and
wireless FM radio in one device. This multifunctional device could be used as a power
bank with its 3500 mAh capacity and features a
high charge-discharge efficiency of 88% and IC
protection technology.
With physical keyboard for easy dialing,
two SIM cards, high voice quality, the easycarried P-Phone has a 1.8” LCD screen and is
thoughtfully designed with simple yet practical
functions. P-Phone also features a torch and its
battery could last for 39 hours while using as a
flashlight. Besides, P-Phone could play FM radio
with its high-volume loud speaker with no need
for an earphone. The phone, which weighs 143g,
has an internal memory of 32Mb and supports up to 32GB external memory, and comes in two

Could you give us an overview of Western Leaf’s
business? How long have you had operations in
the region?
Western Leaf Electronics commenced operations
back in 2003 and spent a number of years in the
MicroControllers business. In 2009, with our indepth understanding of technology and passion to
create meaningful products, we started focusing
on building end consumer products.
We began coming to the region and testing the
market in 2010 and started full-fledged operations
here in 2013.
Can you elaborate on the company’s USP?
We always focus on building products that have
a purpose, that can integrate into our lives and
are easy and simple to operate. We believe that
quality and selection of materials are important no
matter what the price point is. “We believe
that technology
should adapt
to our lives, not
the other way
around.”

Can you describe your go-to-market approach?
We have a customer base of different age
groups, but most of our customers fall between
16 and 34. Our products are priced just right,
never too expensive, they also hold their value
for the money. Our target audience includes
those who appreciate technology, and people
who understand that both pricing and quality
are equally important. Our participation in social
media and trade shows allows end users to get
hands on experience. In 2015, we plan to be
more aggressive in our marketing, and will work
on extending the awareness of our products so
that more people can buy them. Our products
are now sold in power retail stores, online and
small retail stores.
Could you discuss your product line-up? Which
features stand out in the crowded marketplace?
Currently we have three product lines. The
Frenzy line consists of smartphones, tablets, TV
streaming devices and related accessories. The
Vomo line consists of audio products such as
in ear headphones, over the ear headphones,
portable speakers and more. The third line of
products consist of new accessories that we will
be revealing later this April. Each product has its
own unique selling point, overall, we focus on
purposeful designs that provide value to its user. What are your other market differentiators?
We take pride in the fact that our products stand out
distinctively from the competition and are not simply
‘me-too’ products. We ensure that they have a
purpose and differentiating value. Our products are
priced in between high and low end brands, we try
to cover the middle tier, which is highly neglected
by the industry. This is one of our differentiators and
we always emphasize product quality.
What kind of responses have you received from
the region?
We have had a high level of acceptance in the
market. Customers seem to be weary of the
status quo in the industry as companies are
trying to make only cosmetic changes to their
products without relevant innovation. Also,
people seem to like our Canadian origins and
understand that Canadian products are built with
quality and passion.
How are you staying ahead of market trends?
We watch people, live by each day’s experience,
listen carefully, and we try to make sense and
figure out how technology can be integrated. We
believe that technology should adapt to our lives,
not the other way around.
What kind of user-experiences can customers
expect from Western Leaf Electronics?
Seamless integration into their lives, products that
work well and last long, and products that have
built in intelligence.
What are your business plans for 2015? What
can channel partners expect?
We have two new exciting product lines coming
up, some with new patents and we expect
them to create great impact in the market. I
encourage everyone to keep a close eye on our
updates. As for channel partners, we always try
to put products that can sell easily and have the
right margins. Those partners that are able to
recognize the value of our brand, have always
been able to capitalize on it within the first few
months after a launch.

EasyShare
Western Leaf’s pocket-size device, EasyShare
allows users to take their files anywhere they
go. It has a tight rubber compartment that gives
users the ability to hold money and credit cards,
eliminating the need to carry a wallet. It also
allows users to stream video files to nearby
devices, and comes with a network drive that
can sync with cloud storage. In addition to that,
EasyShare’s built-in access point converts wired
network to wireless, and has the capability to
convert wired audio into multiple Bluetooth
devices (headphones and or speakers). Users
can also take advantage of the device’s mobile
screen broadcasting via wireless video and 3G
LTE Hotspot. The 3G/4G hotspot model enables
users to connect to the Internet and share the
connection with up to 10 devices.
Frenzy 8Z
Western Leaf’s new tablet, Frenzy 8Z comes with 3G function and
features an 8.1- inch screen for a better viewing area, built-in 3G
for fast speed data download and voice call capabilities. It also
empowers users with Bluetooth 4.0, which ensures clear sound
connection and low power usage, along with HD playback, and
a dual camera with an auto focus back camera. In addition, it is
lightweight and equips users with a 4,000 mAh battery with 24 hours
of voice talk, 22 hours of 2G, 15 hours of 3G, and guarantees a fast
charge. The tablet is priced at $189.99 and is available in the
marketplace. The device can be accessorized with the new
Frenzy Controller, which is a ‘button-less remote’ to
control Android devices.

Frenzy TV Hub
Frenzy TV Hub is an android-powered device that has great
horse power and is equipped with innovative design panel,
which displays important information such as time, weather
conditions, road conditions and others. It is powered with
4K HDMI output, HDMI input for video capturing, wireless
display ready, DLNA, quadcore processor, octa-core GPU,
two GB memory and internal storage. The TV hub is built
for smooth solid performance and easy setup to get users
going in no time. It has a sculpture-inspired design that fits
in the modern home, according to the company. It also runs
using the company’s button-less remote, Frenzy Controller, a
device that’s designed to perfectly fit in the palm of the hand
and allows the user to control their Android devices using
gestures (touch, long press, swipe, drag, double touch, pinch
and other touch gestures) and gravity motion sensors (that
allow you to control the pointer on the screen). The company
said that Frenzy Controller is the first visceral product in the

portable speakers
The Vomo Nu portable speaker packs up to 30 watts of sound power, and still can be charged using
a micro USB cable, making it easier to recharge while on the go. It utilizes two speakers, two base
radiators, and one powerful vibration sound unit. Users can control the unit by simply swiping its
surface; for example the user only need to slide up to increase volume, down to decrease the volume.
According to a recent study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), nearly one in five (16
percent) consumers owns a portable wireless speaker. The portable wireless speaker category is
also poised for growth, as 28 percent of consumers plan to purchase a related product in the next
two years, the study revealed. According to the company, with Vomo Nu’s swipe gestures control,
users won’t have to look for buttons to enjoy their music. Western Leaf Electronics is also expected to
release a modular development kit that allows other companies to build on top of its framework.

Lenovo’s YOGA 3 Pro is an ultra slim convertible PC. The 13-inch device addresses users’ desires for an extremely stylish

Over the last decade, Sharaf DG has come a long

space coming up in the Middle East and are actively
looking at expansion into uncovered geographies.

Lifestyle logic
Keeping pace with the changing dynamics of technology market is the key to competitive edge in the channel business.
Over the last couple of years, the channel market has been moving away from box-pushing to newer avenues that offer
steep growth curve and healthy bottom lines. Redington Gulf has always been on the forefront when it comes to introducing
new concepts and our aim is to provide products that offer higher margins for our partners. This was the
rationale behind the launch of our Lifestyle division in early 2012.
The Middle East market is still predominantly hardware-centric and we realized that there was a
huge untapped potential in the booming digital lifestyle market. Despite a significant fall in average
prices across products categories, improved consumer understanding of digital products and their
compatibility helped to push the sales to new heights. Consumers these days no longer wait two
to three years to upgrade their existing digital products. Our strategy was to address a niche
consumer segment, which is defined by design and individuality.
What is the Lifestyle division all about? We target four distinct ecosystems – human
ecosystem, office ecosystem, home ecosystem and transport ecosystem. As the name
suggests, in the human ecosystem, we cater to products a consumer would wear or carry
with themselves while on-the-go. For example, headphones or headsets, tablets, cases,
keypads, laptop cases, backpacks, mobile and related accessories. The office ecosystem
includes everything a consumer would use in an office environment, from PCs, mouse,
USB, keyboard, router, hard drive to software and printers. The home ecosystem includes
products such as digital camera, home theatre, game console, DVR, PC and accessories,
mobile devices, MP3 player and storage devices. And in the last one, transport
ecosystem, we offer products that the consumer would need in a vehicle, for example,
GPS, car phone holders, car audio, car chargers, Bluetooth headsets and the like.
Currently, ranging over a number of product categories, our Lifestyle division
boasts brands such as Belkin, Emtec, Huawei, I-Life, Imation, Microsoft, Targus, TDK,
Western Leaf, WireSlim, and our latest addition to the portfolio has been Logitech
Our market strategy is to address all channel segments – hypermarkets, power
retailers, toys and gaming stores, exports, and various other channel segments.
Also as technology gradually transcends beyond boundaries, transforming our
lives, we are looking to bring in niche partners such as retailers specialized in
healthcare, sports and other dedicated fields.
Today technology has advanced in unimaginable ways and with trends such
as Internet of Things, 3D printing, robotics and wearable technology, but we are
yet to see the true potential in the market. We want to lead this transformation and
be ahead of the times by continuing making an impact and bringing in new partners
and products for this region.
