Re “Ghastly and Aged Beauty Products and Tips” Dear Editor of Sixteen’s Diary, My friends and I read the article “Ghastly and Aged Beauty Products and Tips” together and we were quite surprised by how the article strongly underestimated the satisfying effects and applicability of 5 beauty products that we use quite frequently. Every issue of the Sixteen’s Diary magazine is quite delightful and fun to read. However, we request that the articles be made more thoroughly and sensibly, so young readers like us can be given many unbiased perspectives about beauty and health and not be offended by suggestions that are meant to benefit us. A little attention and sensibility to that matter would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Cynthia Polite From Indianapolis Intense new makeup looks add to surprise of prom The amount of makeup needed to pull of the exaggerated OldHollywood look (Below) A high school student getting ready for her “special night” May 8th, 2010 Millions of overjoyed teens all over the world excitingly made their way to their annual school prom in the midst of the 2nd week of May (last week) surprising their friends and dates with their heavy and exaggerated makeup. Last Sunday, makeup expert Soo Jeong Lee noted that the prom makeup trend of 2010 became heavier and more dramatic than the styles and trends of previous years. Teenage girls have migrated from the innocent, cute, and natural look that boomed in popularity last year to much more mature and intense smoky styles and OldHollywood looks. Makeup Smarties of Seventeen Magazines say that they have tried sultry winged eyes, bright red lips, pale and smooth skin, and dramatic eyelashes in most of their recent prom makeup tutorials on Youtube, showing how 2010 is shifting towards more seductive and bold styles. For this year’s proms, an average high school girl spent a large $75 to buy new makeup products and cosmetics and get professional makeup help. Accordingly, they spent 20% more money than they did during last year’s proms. “Since the sultry and popular new makeup styles emphasize many facial features, like eyes, lips, and eyelashes, it’s quite obvious that we have to spend more and pay more to look our best,” says an anonymous high school student who attended her school’s prom in Miami Florida last Saturday. According to the student, many of the girls at her school had to buy a bag full of new false eyelashes, colored lenses, red lipstick, long lasting liquid liner, and many more products just for their special night. Both high school female and male students responded to the new exaggerated makeup style with mixed feelings. “It was a bit overdone and intense at times, but we still enjoyed the classiness of the movie star and diva look,” agrees Timothy Cavell and his date Charlotte Banister last Friday after their school prom in Fayetteville, Arkansas. “The best part of the night,” adds Mr. Cavell, smiling, “was not my girlfriend’s makeup or her beautiful dress. It was that I was at the prom with somebody who I could have a great time with. I guess that we (teenage boys) enjoy all types of makeup looks only if they bring out the true colors of our special someone. That’s what’s most important.” Rachel, DeBora. Pretty at Prom with Don’t crash diet Most of your girls out there are probably storing up Slim Fast diet drinks and emptying out your refrigerator of any fatty and high calorie foods. Before you toss that Twinkie out the window-no wait, just toss that out- think about all the energy you need to chat with your buddies and dance all night long. We all have a tendency to starve ourselves the day, or even week, before prom, but there are smarter and healthier ways to get slim and fit on time. Drink beverages with low sugar and salt, like sparkling water or unsweetened tea, and plug your earphones on and jog yourself towards your flawless and healthy body at prom. Watch your makeup Unless you guys want to spook out our special night with a vampire slash drag queen look, lay loose on the makeup. Piling on layers of Lash Blast and foundation isn’t the best way to get that dewy eyed and rosy cheek innocence we all want. A week before the big day, get together with a group of friends and help each other with each others’ makeup. 2 layers of navy, brown, or black eyeliner and tinted lip gloss will complement your complexion and make your good features stand out. Remember, it’s better to do too little than to do too much, because you can always add a dab of mascara and blush later. Nobody wants to carry around a bottle of remover and a box of cotton balls around with them. Modest is hottest Deep v-necks and super short mini dresses might be some girls’ idea of being attractive and alluring. Sadlyor luckily, that’s not exactly what teacher, parents, and most importantly guys think as ideal. A tad of exposure with a girly strapless LBD or a slight slit down your back is just perfect for blowing your guy away and for enhancing the beauty in you. Play with shimmer and glitter Shimmer and glitter is the girl’s best friend when it comes to fancy events like our very special prom night. With just a slight layer of glittery or metallic eye shadow be that model walking down the runway. For those daring girls who are going to sport a strapless dress, sprinkle a tad of glitter and body shine over your chest and collar bones. Bedazzle your date and your friends! 10 Precious Tips…! Know before you go to an after party When your friend suddenly comes up to you and whispers something quietly in your ear, you know that it’s most definitely going to be about an after prom celebration. Ahem! Before you start thinking about all the naughty drinks you’re going to experience that night and fearing the peer pressure there, ask your friend to update you with more information about the party. Adult supervision is a must when it comes to hyper teenagers and attractive young ladies like you all. Sorry to break it to you girls, but if there is any mentioning of alcoholic beverages, it’s time to kick the big “No”. Find something better to do that night. Plan a girls’ night out, an after prom sleepover, a movie marathon, or a crash at your favorite diner. Go for a certain theme with your makeup There are so many new looks that girls are dying to try on. From the Old Hollywood look, the pink innocent school look, the sultry Megan Fox look, to the sparkling ice princess look, why does everything have to be so glamorous, right girls? Here’s the perfect chance to shine in the spotlight with your favorite makeup theme. Be careful though! Mixing various themes will make your outfit/look seem disorganized and overdone. Go for one that you’re sure you can rock. Take best accessory: your dazzling smile Prom night is the time when you can let loose and chill out with your best buddies. It doesn’t matter how flawless your makeup is, how beautiful your dress is, and how polished you might look if you don’t have that sparkling smile. Guys love girls who have a bubbly and genuine laugh. Beware: the big HH One of the most embarrassing and least smooth moves you can make on your special night is tripping over your partner or clumsily stepping on your guy’s new, polished dress shoes. High heels and stilettos might lure us with their sharp heels, glamorous colors and shades, and cute details, but that doesn’t mean that we have to sacrifice our precious feet and make a complete fool out of ourselves. 1~2 inch high heels are just perfect for the special occasion! The secret weapon: a clutch Note the thing that all celebrities and fashion icons are gripping in their hands or between their arms: a clutch. Clutches are the ultimate accessories for dressy and fancy events like prom and homecoming. You can put in your cellphone, a wad of money, and any lady supplies and look polished and sophisticated. Slip your favorite lip gloss and eyeliner pencil in a jeweled clutch. Don’t forget a toothbrush! Despite how dainty and carefully we eat our food, our breath isn’t going to be that ideal minty sensation. Don’t forget to place a portable toothbrush kit in your clutch. Brush your teeth at the diner you eat at and leave your kit in your date’s/ fiends’ car. All about DIETS Effective and healthy diets that keep your belly from ruling your mind!. All about DIETS “Look at all my flubber!”, “What am I going to do about this fat?”, “Is there a way that I can get slim and lean?” are typical phrases that teenagers can hear on a daily basis. We teenager girls just can’t help day dreaming about cat-walking the school halls with a rocking body and grabbing the attention of guys. So, Sixteen’s Diary decided to dig deep into the depths of popular and satisfactionguaranteed diets. girl in your history class who looks like she just came out of a Covergirl advertisement, to your best friend who flirts with all the guys on a string, we simply just want to be in their place, knocking the socks off our friends and peers. The bottom line is that we live our lives complaining about our weight and fretting over calories because we want to go with the flow, because we want to fit in. It’s nice that you ladies are willing to enhance your beauty with some hard effort, but we recommend that you do so with healthy, risk free diets and slim-down tips. “I’m “:How fatter can I get than THIS?!” Why diet?... Hate to break it to you girls, but has anybody realized that most guys don’t necessarily like girls who own size 0 jeans? So, why are we so self conscious about something that even our ultimate goal, boys, seems not to care about. According to the Girl’s Scout Research Institute, we aren’t easily deceived by the sparkling backgrounds and high fashion apparel that cover the sad reality of fashion supermodels and women in the media. 65% percent of us know that the glamorous models that beam at us from runways and advertisements are unattractively and unrealistically skinny. Ironically, more than half of us still want to be more like those knobby kneed and exhaustingly pale complexioned young ladies. So, where could all that longing be from? Jealousy. I bet that every one of you girls absolutely envy at least one classmate of yours. From the on a seafood diet. I see food and I eat it! “ -Anonymous Why the long face? The sad fact is that giving up that burger for lunch, refusing the smoothie that your girlfriends offer you, and sacrificing 15 minutes of our Facebook/ MySpace time to exercise is practically one of the hardest things for a typical girl to do. Sixteen’s Diary wants to recommend these popular and effective diet tips that can promise teenager girls easy and healthy weight loss. Equip with some Tips When our mothers told us that we should eat our veggies regularly, who knew that their tip was pretty darn important? Green and colorful veggies are the best foods that we can eat to get rid of excessive fat. Zucchinis, lettuce, and asparagus made delectable and well-being salads, side dishes, and low-fat snacks that charge us up with plenty of vitamins, like Vitamin A, B, C, and K. Instead pouring a sea of A1 sauce all over your Silone steak, think about replacing your mashed potatoes with a soft cushion of fresh green lettuce and diced celery to balance your meal with healthy veggies and to decrease the amount of meat you eat. Whoever said that you can’t eat any meat during a diet? Believe it or not, depriving yourself of all meat and becoming totally vegan for losing weight weakens your existing muscles and transforms them into weak tissues, making your arms and legs thicker. A balanced amount of salmon and chicken are great ways to gain healthy protein for your cardiovascular muscles. With a little bit of exercise after dinner, all that baby fat and chub will eventually transform into tight and attractive muscles, and you will be taking a step towards the toned and lean body that Miley Cyrus rocks. Talking about exercise and toning up, try fitting in at least 1 hour of exercise or sports in your everyday schedule. Not only will it burn down those calories from the donut you ate earlier, but it also relieves stress from school, helps you build relationships with teammates, and gives stressed and cooped teens a healthier outlook on life. Watch out about crossing the We be motivated! :) All about DIETS line and pushing yourself too hard. Nobody wants to become an exhausted over-exercised zombie with numerous health injuries and problems concentrating in school! Diets on the Rise When a specific diet is popular and widely known among people, it hints that there’s something unpredictable and unique about it. One of those diets that recently boomed in popularity is the Duvet Diet. The diet claims that sleeping more will help you control unbearable hunger pains and annoying grumbling stomachs that keep us on the edge between meals and after an exhausting day of school. Weekly all-nighters might be a pain when it comes to all the Starbucks HotShots, the impatient ticking clock, and the weight that builds on our baggy eyes, but we must admit that it’s pleasing to imagine all the calories and energy that we’re burning while we uncomfortably fidget in our chairs. Sad to break it to you ladies, but sleeping less and working late hours actually tricks our brain into thinking that we need the same amount of food and energy at night as we do in the day. That’s why you guys might frequently find yourselves creeping into the kitchen pantry for a late night snack during your all-nighters. As for the results, many teenagers and business women happily give this diet a thumbs up as they share that they painlessly lost 8~10 pounds in one year! Have any of you girls ever wondered how Beyonce managed to look so glamorous and slim in her glittery dresses in Dream Girls? It seems that she spent months working out with Ready for prom? Try the Duvet Diet and the Master Cleanse before you show off your glamorous dress! the help of professional trainers and a heavy diet plan, but there’s less than what meets the eye. The stunning diva stuck to the Master Cleanse Diet and managed to lose 20 pounds in 10 days to shine in movie theaters all over the world. This popular diet is also known as the Lemonade Diet, since it’s a concoction made out of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and grade-A pure maple syrup. The exotic and magical beverage cleanses and dissolves the toxins in our body. When our body is free of toxins, it’s harder for any more toxins and unhealthy fat to build up, making it easier for us to succeed in noticeably dramatic weight loss. Of course, it’s going to be difficult to get through lunch time and suppress all the " Beyoncé Before and After the Master Cleans e. As all you girls might know, Prom season is slowly creeping up on our planners. The irresistibly tempting shortcut of intense exercise workouts and giving up meals altogether might be winking at us every 2 seconds, but shake that thought out of your system and follow our simple and effective diets and tips. A cup of coffee with Ms. Janey Park A biology teacher who leads the makeup crew during many musical productions at her school Q1: How have the past years of working in the makeup crew been and how have your makeup skills developed? I learned that, really, the best way to do makeup is to work with what the person has and accentuate the good features. You don’t try to make a new face; you try to bring out the good features in the face already. So, that’s what I learned in makeup and that’s what I kind of always thought…whether it’s for your body or whatever…try to work with what you have and make the best with it. Q2: What do you think is the best makeup that’s appropriate for everyday school wear? Well I honestly think that when you’re a teenager, there’s not much you need to “make up”. I think for any girl…I know that skin is a big concern…I would say Ms. Park enjoys a date with her friends. for a light and even complexion, you can use a tinted moisturizer or something. I know some girls are up late studying or talking to their friends on their phones, and for that, you know, some Concealer is always nice to brighten up dark spots. But, I think that just mascara, curled eyelashes, some lip-gloss is good for everyday school wear if they’re going to wear makeup. Q3: As you know, prom is coming up and it’s time for us to sharpen up and prepare. What look or tips do you recommend for prom makeup? Well, for prom, let’s go for an enchanted garden look. So, when I think about “enchanted garden”, I think kind of dewy skin that looks really moisturized and fresh. I think of pink cheeks, not really dark, strong makeup. I think more of a lighter, colorful, dewy look, maybe. I think that will be a look that will suit many, many people. Q4: How do you think makeup affects teenager girls and their self esteem? I think that makeup does boost their self esteem, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily good. I remember myself as a teenager. Sometimes I really feared going out in public without makeup on. I think that it does gives some girls self esteem boost, but I don’t think it’s necessarily good for a self-esteem boost. Yeah, I think sometimes people do too much, and I think that’s not good for your skin…and it doesn’t look good either. Q5: Do you have any special or quirky experiences with makeup? I don’t know. Special? Maybe recently for the musical “Sound of Music”, I had to put fake eyelashes on an actor, and I unintentionally changed her eyelids! Q6: What is “makeup” to you? Makeup and making yourself beautiful…I think making yourself beautiful starts from your own perception. I have seen some really pretty girls really mess themselves up because of distorted perceptions they had. Makeup is kind of just a fun thing. It’s an accessory, but in my view, it’s not so much of a necessity, it’s something fun. Q7: What kind of makeup look and/or style stands out to you the most? For me, I always just think of a classic look…the classic look stands out the most to me. Everything else is like a fading trend and it all just comes and goes. When I think about classic things, like nice eyebrows or good skin, those kinds of things always catch my attention more than colorful eyeshadow or layers of face powder. Q8: How were you influenced to start makeup crew and continue it? All teachers are encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities. Also, performing arts is always something that I did. I used to dance and I used to do a lot of performances. So, I used to do my own stage makeup. So when the opportunity rose for me to help out the drama production with makeup, it was something I really wanted to do. As I continued, met more people, and did more shows, it was always such a fun and positive experience. It was something so different from Biology class. And, for me it was a really creative outlet that I think everyone needs every now and then. Q9: What do you think were some benefits of makeup crew? Working in makeup crew with so many different faces and styles, I think that it really just affirmed the “hypothesis” that natural is best. So, the best thing is to accentuate what you already have and be natural. Q10: Is there anything you would like to say to all the readers of Sixteen’s Diary about makeup? Making yourself beautiful with makeup and all that business is really great. It’s awesome that you guys are interested in making yourself better and prettier. Just always keep modesty in mind, and you’re good to go! Cetaphil Lotion: Excellent for giving moisture to tired skin of actors and actresses. Cetaphil is recommended for heavy makeup, because the lotion helps hold face powder and toner in place without any sticki- Johnson’s Baby Oil: Who said that we could only buy 10 dollar makeup remover? A couple of drops of oil do just the trick. It also erases eye makeup 5 times better than your regular eye makeup remover. Ms. Park’s Top 4 Favs Covergirl Wetslicks This little wand of lip gloss sent the US of A in a Covergirl sensation this year. The glossy glow, shiny pearls, and vivid colors brighten and compliment your complexion like no other! The Face Shop Lash Curler: With its metallic gold color, this curler is as expensive as it looks. It grips onto eyelashes of both Asian and Caucasian eyes easily. Using this in the morning will give so much glamour to your everyday face and make your eyelashes into cute fairy lashes. Opinion Column: The media should stop hollering “Unnatural is the new Natural!” to trend sensitive teens The other day, I pleaded my mother for permission to get a bellybutton piercing. I mean, I’m at the time of life when beauty and fashion mean a lot to me. All my friends come to school with the newest clothes, wildest accessories, and flashing tattoos, and I have the right to look cool like them…right? Wrong. As we spend our afternoons flipping through TV channels, we blindly pass across the main reason why teenagers have distorted views of beauty these days. It comes from reality shows of millionaire celebrities wearing revealing clothes, commercials with skinny supermodels, and ridiculous propaganda that succeed in making even uncomfortable accessories a booming fashion trend (Davis). Current media trends of the 21st century are deceiving naïve teenagers into believing a wrong understanding and view of beauty, and we young adults must be aware that corrupt comprehensions can flush our innocence down the gutter. Many of the fashion and beauty trends that sweep across teenagers all over the world are quite permanent and harmful. The stains and blemishes from tattoos and the overuse of makeup are tricky things to rewind and erase, even with the help of plastic surgery and advanced medical processes (Gibbs). According to a Harvard team of researchers, the raving popular 7 inch stilettos and platform shoes can be linked to various bone and cartilage conditions, like knee osteoarthritis, corns, hammertoes, and chronic back pain. Excessive body art and piercing have diagnosed young teens with Hepatitis C, an infection that causes liver inflammation (Sella). Short cut clothes corrupt morals of both men and women and destroy social modesty (Sella). Are all of these, our health, modesty, morals, and innocence, worth risking for fitting into a society of unnatural and corrupt views of beauty? However, my question is: Why can’t we just accept our personality and let it shine through our own unique fashion and beauty? In the distant lands of Africa and Southwest Asia, the idea of beauty is expressed with no stereotypes and puts an emphasis on inner beauty (Gibbs). We young women all claim By Cynthia Rhee that a charming personality is what establishes true beauty, but we’re still stuck on our obsession of hourglass figures and colorful apparel. Instead of heading out the mall to shop for hot fashion items, maybe it’s time for us to discover the pretty features in us. There is not much to be done for this disturbing case of brainwashed teens than jumping to conclusions. Unrealistically slim models shielding their sad and limited lives with glamorous clothes and deceiving lights-no more of them, toss them out the window. Instead, the media and fashion industries should use typical everyday teens in advertisements and widespread sources to deliver a positive and healthy image to the public. Parents and guardians should talk to their children and young kids about their concerns about detrimental images of the media and teach them the right outlooks on beauty and confidence. The recent attentiveness and motivation of teens to enhance their beauty have frequently ended up into extreme and disturbing fashion trends. Observing the world of teenagers, the media and fashion industries are the ones to be blamed for teens adapting to unhealthy and risky beauty styles. What we need is a wakeup call that will eventually open our eyes from the deceiving darkness of the media’s lies and show us the beautiful nature of “natural”. Citations: Dav is, Lagena. By Samantha Lee As science and medical processes develop immensely during the 21st century, cosmetic and plastic surgery that used to be a rarely chosen option has become a necessity for becoming beautiful. Nowadays, typical teenage girls desire and choose to beautify themselves and fit in with the crowd through various plastic surgeries, like breast surgery, liposuction, and facial surgeries. The sad part of beautifying operations is that it often leads onto harmful risks and unnatural and synthetic features and body images (Wysong). Surprisingly, teenagers aren’t aware about the many frightening and horrific stories and testimonies about plastic surgery after effects and failures plastered all over the bulletin boards of the media. Some common risks of liposuction and facial surgeries are permanent swelling, sagging skin, allergic reactions to medication, and medication poisoning (Wysong). The renowned story of the “Fan-face woman” in Korea disgusted millions of people all over the world. A once legendary and famous model, Mrs. Han, shocked the public with her swollen face that is as large as a household fan. She spent her youth squandering her money for Botox injections and plastic surgery. Women and girls believe that plastic surgery will immediately make them a much more beautiful and attractive person on the outside and the inside. However, those visions and dreams are actually foolish misconceptions that are totally naive to reality. “I believe that plastic surgery is a waste of money,” says Levi Miller, a typical high school student, shaking his head disapprovingly, “It’s totally a waste of money, because it destructs natural beauty.” 65% of men and teenage boys prefer natural beauty than artificially hindered features, and 45% of all teenagers do not understand why people are willing to change themselves through harmful and risky processes. Yes, plastic surgeries definitely can be seen as a self-esteem boost. Popular stars and celebrities have publically confessed that they have fixed their physical flaws in the past and do not regret spending their time and money on beautifying medical processes. “If somebody really believes that they can be more active and confident in society by covering up some of their imperfections,” says Tim Kwon considerately, “its fine with me. They just have to be careful about not going over the limit.” 83% of teens who have had cosmetic surgery chose to do so for a self-esteem boost, and the majority of them confirmed that they were able to break out of their shells of timidity and feel better about themselves in society (Mann). However, aren’t there clever and better alternatives to plastic surgeries? Why do girls’ hearts only point towards the most expensive and drastic medical process out of the bunch? Chinese acupuncture (Mann) is another effective way to tuck in baby fat and tweak weak physical features. Young teens deserve to save their money and keep out of risks by introduced to safer operations. Plastic surgeons wish that young teens understand surgeries as a SOS to birth defects, not as a simple shortcut to beauty. Plastic surgery rates have increased immensely as many teenage girls give the idea of enhancing their beauty with medical operations. Young women and teens of today should keep in mind the risks and permanent after-effects of those surgeries as they ponder over the dramatic occasion and change. “I think it’s appropriate to want to look your version of normal,” says Rong Han, “However, people shouldn’t use plastic surgery just to become somebody else’s beautiful.” Citations: Wysong, Pippa.
