The blistering cold and snow that accompanied our winter was nearly forgotten as
visitors escaped into the whimsical glass exhibitions gracing our galleries, thanks
to talented artists and our dedicated installation staff! From Michael Meilahn’s
ever-popular Corn Zone and the equally captivating Kids Design Glass sculptures,
to Katja Loher’s mesmerizing Videoplanet-Orchestra and the sublime Landscape of
Beth Lipman and Ingalena Klenell, the museum has been a sensory wonderland.
This spring, we will turn from glass to the textile arts in the fascinating exhibition
Innovators and Legends: Generations in Fiber and Textiles—a gathering of wildly
imaginative works that are definitely not your grandmother’s embroidery.
In August, the Creative Arts Academy—funded by generous grants from the
Hubbell-Waterman Foundation and the Riverboat Development Authority—will give
a select group of motivated and talented students an in-depth, concentrated arts
education. For the Figge staff and the employees of our sister cultural organizations
downtown, it is an opportunity to use our talents and resources to create new
educational experiences. We look forward to working with the Davenport
Community School District to make the Academy a success.
In November, the Figge will be the first venue outside New York for the exhibition
Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum. With works
spanning 200-plus years—including paintings, drawings, needlework, quilts, wood
sculptures, weather vanes, assemblages and books—the exhibition celebrates
untaught artists who answered their own undeniable imaginative instincts by creating
unique, compelling artworks. Self-Taught Genius invites us to reconsider the act of
making art, reminding us that there are innumerable ways of communicating and that
artistic expression and appreciation are not just for professionals.
Since its founding as the Davenport Municipal Art Museum in 1925, the Figge has
been grounded in the belief that the arts are a vital element of a good education—
and a well-lived life. Our Big Picture Outreach Program, now in its sixth year, brings
the Figge’s collections and programs into local schools, reaching more than 15,000
students who otherwise may not have any exposure to art. This year, through
a partnership with John Deere, we are bringing many of
these classes to the Figge for the first time so students can
deepen their art knowledge and experience the museum.
We invite you to help us continue to provide these
amazing services to the community and fulfill our mission
of bringing art and people together by attending the Art
at Heart Gala on May 17! (More details on page 8.)

From Pencil to Printed Page:
Arthur Geisert’s Thunderstorm
June 14-September 14, 2014
From Pencil to Printed Page will give Figge
visitors a unique opportunity to examine this
master printer and storyteller’s process, from
initial pencil sketches through three stages
of printing states to the final, painstakingly
hand-colored illustrations immortalized
in Arthur Geisert’s 2013 picture book
Thunderstorm. When laid end-to-end,
the illustrations complete a breathtaking
415-inch-long panorama detailing the effects
of a passing thunderstorm on a typical farm
community one summer’s afternoon. More
than 180 sketches, plates, print states and
hand-colored illustrations will accompany an
assemblage of artist’s tools, a printing press
and exciting children’s activities.
The New York Times Sunday Book Review
has said of Geisert’s Thunderstorm: “The
artist’s trademark copperplate etchings, tinged
with watercolors, lend a timeless feel to his
slice-of-life illustrations, which show how a
farm family and various animals weather the
storm…. Cutaways reveal where foxes have
burrowed for shelter, and offer a glimpse
into the farmhouse kitchen, where the family
warily eyes the leaking ceiling. Geisert allows
the storm to do real damage, but he also
shows the community getting to work once
the skies clear, determined to set things right.”
Gallery Talk
7 p.m. Thursday, June 19
Author and illustrator Arthur Geisert
will be at the Figge for a talk about
Thunderstorm, followed by a book signing.
Two Americans in Paris: Stuart Davis and Grant Wood
July 12-November 2, 2014
F
rom the mid-19th century until World
War II, American artists flocked to Paris
in pursuit of inspiration and professional
credibility. Widely regarded as the cultural
capital of the world, the French metropolis
provided fertile ground for inspiration
by enabling aspiring artists to study the
Old Masters on display at the Louvre and
experiment with contemporary artistic trends.
The exhibition Two Americans in Paris
focuses on the experiences and subsequent
careers of two such artists—Grant Wood and
Stuart Davis. Both studied in Paris during the
1920s and eventually enjoyed considerable
reputations for depicting scenes of American
life. But while Wood adopted an impressionist
style of painting during his travels and famously
rejected abstraction upon his return to the
United States, Davis responded to the artistic
innovations of French modernism. Deeply
affected by the art of Henri Matisse and
Fernand Léger, Davis developed a unique style
of art that reconciled the aesthetic concerns of
avant-garde artists with his desire to capture
the vitality of American urban life and culture.
Curated by Dr. Rima Girnius, the exhibition
will feature paintings and works on paper
from the Figge’s Grant Wood Archive, as well
as a selection of Stuart Davis lithographs
from a private collection.
Sponsored by Don and Connie Decker and Robert W. Baird
An opening reception for this exhibition will
take place in July. Watch the Events page
at www.figgeartmuseum.org for details.

Innovators and Legends:
A
Generations in Fiber and Textiles
mid the social and artistic
upheavals of the 1960s and ’70s,
artists began using traditional
“craft” media to make sculptural and conceptual works that expanded our definitions of
the visual arts. Since then, new generations
of artists have pushed textiles, fiber arts and
other forms in even more directions, further
blurring the distinction between traditional
“craft” and “fine art.”
Innovators and Legends: Generations in
Fiber and Textiles, on view at the Figge from
May 24 through September 7, showcases
more than 50 artists from the U.S. and
abroad who belong to the first, and
subsequent, generations of these artists.
The exhibition is organized by the
Muskegon Museum of Art with guest
curator Geary Jones.
Innovators and Legends explores the
myriad possibilities inherent in fabric,
thread, fiber and yarn. Weaving, knitting,
soft sculpture, embroidery, felting and
other techniques are featured
and used in ways that are by
turns painterly, sculptural
or conceptual, and often
surprising and amusing.
The exhibition casts aside
all preconceptions of
what is, or is not, fiber
art—including Mary
Bero’s embroidered
images, Kay Sekimachi’s
classical woven wall hangings
and Nick Cave’s celebrated “Soundsuits,”
which are wearable sculptures inspired
by African dance costumes and
created from castoff materials.

May 24-September 7, 2014
May 24-September 7, 2014
A companion exhibition to Innovators
and Legends, Local Threads will feature
artists in the Quad Cities region who use
fiber and textiles to create vibrant, imaginative artworks. Many—such as Rowen
Schussheim-Anderson, Mary Merkel Hess
and Astrid Hilger Bennett—are nationally
and internationally known, and all the artists
create compelling pieces that continue the
theme of innovation and imagination of the
larger exhibition.
There will be an opening reception for
Local Threads on May 29 (see page 4).

A Moveable Museum: Works from the
UIMA School Programs Collections
June 7-August 3, 2014
This exciting, interactive exhibition, set for installation in the Mary Waterman Gildehaus
Community Gallery on the second floor, is a partnership between the Figge and the University
of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA). Due to extreme flooding in 2008, the UIMA’s former building
was deemed unsuitable for the return of artwork, so the museum has utilized its school
programs to continue art education. The UIMA outreach program impacts thousands of K-12
art, social studies and language arts students across the state of Iowa each year.
UIMA Education Partners, made up of private foundations, corporate and individual sponsors,
fund the purchase of artworks (acquired specifically for this purpose) that travel to schools,
libraries and other education settings. Each year, teacher input is collected in regards to
curricular objectives, which determines which type of thematic collection will be added next.
Works from five continents, as well as works demonstrating a wide range of media, are
incorporated into the classroom experience and will be on view as a comprehensive exhibition
for the first time at the Figge. This is a wonderful opportunity for residents in the Quad Cities
to participate in a hands-on experience with these superb collections, usually reserved for
classrooms throughout the state.

Upcoming Exhibition
Coming to the Figge from New York on the first stop
of a national tour, Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from
the American Folk Art Museum celebrates one of
the most unique and cherished American traditions:
folk art. Since colonial times, artists with little or no
formal education have used the materials at hand to
create artworks that depict the world around them,
their beliefs and aspirations, in beautiful and heartfelt
ways. With quilts, furniture, paintings, sculptures,
books and assemblages that date from the 18th
through the 21st centuries, the exhibition explores
the creative impulse of these artists, whose work
continues to influence art and popular culture in our
time. Self-Taught Genius will open November 15.
Tom Gildehaus and Mary Waterman Gildehaus
In Memoriam:
Tom Gildehaus
The Figge Art Museum and the entire Quad
Cities community lost a great friend with
the passing of Tom Gildehaus on March 10
at the age of 73. An Arkansas native, Tom
came to Moline in 1981 as a vice president
at Deere & Company. He went on to hold
executive positions with UNR Industries and
Northwestern Steel & Wire, both in Illinois,
before retiring to the Quad Cities.
He first became involved with the
Davenport Museum of Art in 2001 when
he advised the board on the process
of taking the museum from a city-run
entity to a nonprofit organization. He
joined the Figge Board of Trustees in
2003, and worked tirelessly to raise the
funds needed to build the new museum.
In addition to serving as Board President
in 2005, Tom served as interim Director
prior to the arrival of Sean O’Harrow
in 2007, and continued to serve as a
Trustee until his death.
“It’s a great loss to the community
and a huge loss to the Figge,” said Linda
Lewis, Tom's predecessor as Board
President. “Everybody loved Tom. You
could not, not like this man. He wore
his heart on his sleeve, he was open, he
was humble, he was kind. Everybody
gravitated toward him.”
Tom was married to the late Mary
Waterman, and is survived by a
daughter, three sons and two stepsons.
The Thomas A. and Mary Waterman
Gildehaus Endowment has been
established to benefit the Figge’s
programs and operations. Contact
Raelene Pullen, director of development,
at 563.345.6637 for details.

Birdies Gives Back
The Birdies for Charity
Fund was established to support
the continuing
efforts of the John
Deere Classic—set
for July 7-13 this
year—to provide a
matching bonus for donation to local charities.
In 2013, the Birdies program sent an
additional check to the Figge, adding a
10% bonus to the existing contributions
from generous art lovers in the community.
Your donation through Birdies can generate
additional earnings for the Figge, which
further our ability to fulfill our mission of
bringing art and people together.
Our 2014 goal is to exceed last year's
total and maximize the bonus through this
outstanding program. There has never been
a better time to pledge your support to
the Figge—can we count on your support?
In the coming weeks, pledge forms will
be distributed through the mail to past
donors, and also may be picked up at the
museum. Please encourage any friends,
neighbors or colleagues who are interested
in the program to add BIRDIE #74 to their
pledge forms. Your encouragement will help
us reach our goal!

AAA Discount
In August 2013, the
American Automobile
Association became the
newest addition to the Figge Art Museum’s
continually growing list of partnerships.
Now, AAA members receive $2 off
regularly priced general admission for adults
and seniors simply by showing their AAA
membership cards in the Museum Store.
So bring your visitors to the Figge for a
discounted day of family fun!
Charitable Hotels
Before finalizing your summer travel
plans this year, consider booking through
CharitableHotels.org. The site offers the
same hotels and same rates as those
displayed on other online travel agencies,
but with a twist—a significant portion
of your chosen hotel’s commission gets
donated to the charitable organization of
your choice.
Last summer, the Figge was added to
the list of nonprofits available to support.
Here’s how it works: once your reservation
is made via CharitableHotels.org, a donation
is generated. No additional fee is added to
your bill; the commission is simply given
back to the Figge. After your stay, you will
receive an email outlining the donation
amount that was generated during that
particular stay. The museum will receive the
accrued donation from Charitable Hotels
every six months, and you will feel good
knowing you helped your favorite nonprofit
while on vacation.
To support the Figge when you travel,
visit www.charitablehotels.org directly or
www.figgeartmuseum.org and click the link
in red on the left side of the home page.

FEST
On Fat Tuesday, March 4, more than 300 Figge
visitors got a taste of New Orleans during the annual
Mardi Gras Rajun Cajun Fest. Eight local chefs dished
up Cajun-inspired creations—like alligator gumbo, spicy
deep-fried oysters with cornbread casserole and chicken
and sausage etouffee—and guests were treated to an
all-you-can-eat buffet. For the second year in a row,
Gramma's Kitchen won the People's Choice Award for
best food of the evening. All proceeds
from the event will benefit Figge
programs and exhibitions.
Thanks for coming—
see you next year!

Food for Thought
Fifteen Quad City college students enjoyed a personal tour, brown bag lunch and
discussion on January 24 led by New York-based artist Katja Loher. The afternoon event
was part of the education department’s complementary programming for Katja Loher:
Video Planet-Orchestra, on display through May 4. Loher talked about her path to
becoming an internationally-exhibited artist, the inspiration for her art and encouraged
the students to make time to pursue their dreams.

Museum Giving
The C.A. Ficke Society
We did it! My husband and I joined the C.A.
Ficke Society. For us, the experience was similar
to the first time we gave blood—we were not
exactly sure what to expect, we knew it was the
right thing to do and we knew our actions would
benefit people we would never meet.
We chose to make the Figge a beneficiary of
a percentage of an IRA. Our gift doesn't hurt or
make a significant difference to our family.
Figge Trustee Dr. Randy Lewis said something
at the first annual Ficke Society dinner that I
find myself reflecting on often: “Most (museum)
collections are accidents of fate.” I can think of
several examples to illustrate just that. But the
Figge is different. Our permanent collection
was our first “planned gift,” and certainly no
accident. Charles August Ficke spent years
collecting these works specifically to be gifted
in perpetuity to the City of Davenport on the
promise that the City would always maintain an
art museum for its residents.
C.A. Ficke wasn't alone in this effort; many
others worked to make this dream a reality. It
is exciting to wonder—could any of this group
have had any idea the impact their actions
would have on our community?
In 1967 Dr. Walter Neiswanger gifted his
precious and comprehensive collection of Haitian
Art to the permanent collection and endowed
the museum to care for it.
By 1993, the museum had grown beyond the
walls of the DMA. That commenced a dedicated
group of visionaries to come together to design
a museum for the future.
In our lifetime, I don't think my husband and I
will amass an art collection worthy of growing the
Figge's. So, we have chosen to give in this way—
through a planned gift. We will help support this
museum that started generations before us and
will long be here after we have gone.
The only disappointment in joining the Ficke
Society, as compared to giving blood, was no
ice cream afterwards. That is our favorite treat!
So, if you make the decision to support the
museum, and when you take the action, ice
cream is on Scott and me. We promise.
