Recent thunderstorms and snow melt had the river lapping at its banks with a roiling mix of chocolate brown water. It seemed like the place to be for a group of four teenage girls and a 10-year-old boy who were having a blast on the river—until they floated just a little too far. Alan Cootes was fishing just below Lyle Falls, about half way between the tribal fish counting facility and the Fisher Hill Bridge. He had finally caught his first fish of the day, early in the afternoon when he heard something out of the norm. “Did you hear that?” Alan asked of his wife Delphina. They listened closer and heard screams just as Alan spotted people in the river. Several people were on the west side of the river where Alan was dip net fishing from a stand, and a blondhaired girl was clinging to the rocks on the east side. Delphina ran to call 911 while Alan threw a life preserver to help the group on the west side get out of the water. He called encouragement to the girl, whom he could see was bleeding from a head injury. “He told her to hang onto those sticks and pull yourself up,” said Delphina, referring to two sticks anchored to the rocks just below a fishing site. “He said, ‘Don’t worry, if you fall in the water I will get you out with my net.’” For nearly four hours the youngsters who managed to work their way to the road above the gorge worried as their friend was being rescued by Klickitat County Search and Rescue. Two of the girls who escaped from the west side were 18-year-old Katlynn Smith of Hood River and 18-year-old Katlynn Godwin of Mosier. The third girl who escaped on the west bank was 17-year-old Shelby Carter, also of Hood River, and the 10-year-old ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN boy’s name is Kyle. DNR to hold forest health hearing in Goldendale The public is invited to hear information and provide input on the “forest health hazard warning” for portions of Klickitat, Yakima, Okanogan, and Ferry counties. Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark intends to issue the hazard warning to focus attention and action to address ongoing forest insect infestations in areas identified by a Technical Advisory Committee. Goldendale has been added to the list of sites where hearings will be held. The hearing will present information on the nature of the at-risk forest conditions and recommended actions. The commissioner and DNR will consider input from the public. The public meeting in Goldendale is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, July 23, at the Klickitat Public Utility District, 1313 South Columbus Avenue. In response to persistently worsening tree damage in eastern Washington, Goldmark initiated the state’s forest health warning system See DNR, Page 2 Community Days return to sizzling heat and lots of fun ABOVE: ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN. That would bring to six the number of state propositions facing the voters, including gay marriage and marijuana decriminalization. Backers of Initiative 1240, the proposal to authorize charter schools in Washington, brought an estimated 350,000 signatures to the Secretary of State’s Elections Division. Then 90 minutes later, Tim Eyman and other sponsors submitted an estimated 318,000 signatures for I-1185 to restate the two-thirds vote requirement for taxes and fees passed in Olympia. Both are widely expected to make the fall ballot, but the Elections Division will do a random sample to as- ANDREW CHRISTIIANSEN NICE CATCH: At right, Alan Cootes introduces himself to the girl he encouraged to climb from the river using the anchored sticks seen at right in the above picture. About 45 minutes earlier, Cootes who was not having much luck fishing, scooped the girl’s friends from the far side of the river, surely making it one of his best fishing days ever. A half hour after the visit, Cootes was back on the west side doing a little more fishing from his platform (above). SAR from Page 1 According to the girls, they put in up river, perhaps, they thought, near Pitt. It was their intention to float all the way down the river to the campground, presumably below the Fisher Hill Bridge, but Smith said “all the way to the Columbia River.” A mother of two of the kids, Susan Preston, said she was aware they were going to float the river, but thought they would only be on the upper portion. “I have been down the river many times on the upper and lower parts,” said Preston. She had not been through the Fisher Hill Bridge portion and said there used to be signs and a cable to warn people not to go that far. None of the girls saw any signs indicating it wasn’t safe. Carter says she was on the front inner tube, hanging onto two other tubes as they approached the falls. “Kyle didn’t think we should go through as we got closer, but we all thought it would be all right,” said Carter. “As I started to go over the falls I said, ‘This is going to be bad.”’ All five were dumped into the roiling water and were fortunately pushed on out down the river while their tubes were trapped in the swirling currents. They made their way to the side Fights are main fireworks over past week in Goldendale about 200 yards down stream, clinging to the polished rock wall. “Katy [Godwin] climbed out really fast,” says Carter. “Then he [Alan Cootes] threw us the life preserver and helped the rest of us out.” Klickitat County deputy Randy Wells, the Department’s Marine Patrol Coordinator was on the scene by 4:45 p.m. with the 15-year-old girl named Grayson, as she sat on the rocks. For the next two hours, about a dozen of the Klickitat County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers strung ropes and got a litter lowered to the site about eight feet above the water. FILE PHOTO TURBULANCE: About 200 yards below the rescue site is Fisher Hill Bridge and a daunting gauntlet of turbulant water to run as the Klickitat River is forced through a narrow gorge. DNR sure that 241,000 valid signatures were turned in by Friday’s deadline. The other measures heading to the ballot are: • Referendum 74, a vote on whether to approve or reject the state’s new law authorizing civil marriage for same-sex couples. The bill was Senate Bill 6239. • Initiative 502, decriminalizing marijuana sales and use by adults, is already on the ballot. It was an initiative to the Legislature, but lawmakers did not take it up, so it was guaranteed a public vote this fall. Two non-controversial constitutional amendments were placed on the ballot by the Le gislature. One, SJR8221, would implement changes in use of state bond debt, and the other, SJR8223, deals with investments by the University of Washington and Washington State University. from Page 1 last November and convened a Technical Advisory Committee in January to present recommendations. The effect of a warning designation is to call attention to an emerging forest health issue and focus actions and resources on addressing it. All actions are voluntary on the part of the affected landowners and land managers. Funding allocated to DNR under a jobs bill passed by the state legislature in April will be directed toward the effort. ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN HIDDEN HEROES: SAR volunteers work the ropes on the steep hillside among trees and poison oak. Grayson, who was fitted with a neck brace and complained of neck, back and ankle pain was secured into the litter with a great deal of diligence. SAR team members Jeff King and Russ Patton plus Wells and an unidentified member of Lyle Fire and Rescue slowly worked the girl up the rocky face of the cliff about 100 feet to the top, with the help of team members using pulleys attached to trees near the top of the cliff. At the top King was on his knees with exhaustion. According to King, this was their most difficult extraction. “It would have been easier if it were vertical,” said King. “But there were several overhangs that kept trying to tip the litter inward.” By 7:55 p.m., Grayson was on a stretcher and loaded into the ambulance attended by Lyle medics, fortunate to survive a part of the river that is usually only viewed from the banks or the Fisher Hill Bridge. The group had various bumps and bruises to show for their harrowing experience. “I can’t wait to get it on Facebook,” said Carter, perhaps unaware of just how close five tubers came to disaster. The Fourth of July was a fairly peaceful holiday for Goldendale police. The Department answered just seven complaints and had no major problems during the past week. Two fights resulted in arrests over the weekend. The first occurred on July 7, around 8:20 p.m. when two men got physical after one criticized the way the other rolled cigarettes. Darrin Starr was arrested for fourth degree assault and Brandon Demott, the errant roller, was charged with disorderly conduct. Demott was also charged for being in possession of drug paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana. Police responded to a fight at the 100 block of West Brooks just after Saturday midnight. Two men, Lester Howtopat and Rolando Gonzalez Chavez had accosted Pete Kelly resulting in serious facial injuries to Kelly. Witnesses told police that Howtopat and Chavez had Kelly on the ground and kicked him repeatedly. Howtopat and Chavez were both arrested for felony second degree assault. THIS WEEK’S MOST WANTED: The Goldendale Police are looking for Johdon Keiann Bane Smith. Bane Smith, 30, is wanted for probation violation, failure to report. Bane Smith is 5-2 with brown hair and brown eyes. LETTERS FROM THE Assessor is inconsistent To the Editor: On Friday, June 29, the County Assessor hosted a public forum at the Centerville Grange to address questions and concerns from farmers and ranchers re garding changes in land values and upcoming changes in soil ratings. Surprisingly, there were two instances where Darlene Johnson gave herself praise for the good job she’s doing representing the farmers and ranchers while implementing mandated Department of Revenue (DOR) changes. It has been Johnson’s stance that the involvement of DOR throughout her term has been at her request, yet she made the statement that there are people at the courthouse “who don’t like her and have turned her in to DOR.” Is she implying that if people liked her there would be no DOR involvement, no accountability? One attendee brought forth an issue and wanted Johnson to take a position on this particular point with DOR as assessor. Johnson replied that she’d prefer to ask the question to DOR “in a way to get the answer I want from DOR.” When did manipulation become ethical? Another attendee questioned what happens if he determined that the soil rating for his land is better than what the NRCS rating has the land at? Johnson replied with a chuckle that he obviously doesn’t want to report the better rating but instead should go with the NRCS rating, which would ultimately be the better tax benefit for him. Again, is this ethical? Another attendee expressed concern that this is all opening a can of worms. Johnson replied, “I like opening cans of worms, that’s why I ran for assessor.” More challenging questions followed and eventually Johnson replied, “I don’t have all the kinks worked out, and I don’t COMMUNITY have my head wrapped around all this yet.” As one person pointed out that night, inconsistency does not equal credibility. I agree. Paul Dunn Centerville Objections to Skyline ambulance service change To the Editor: The Dallesport-Murdock Community Council strongly objects to the change in ambulance service enacted by Skyline Hospital and Mike Madden. In pamphlets circulated prior to the levy voted to support service, the public was promised 24-hour service. Ambulance service is never a money maker or even a break even venture for a local hospital. Using a levy to help provide this public service is a trust that promised that those funds will not be used elsewhere. Dallesport used EDA money and the efforts of Dave Sauter as a contractor to build an ambulance building at the request of Mike Madden. At that time, Mike Madden promised the Dallesport Community that Skyline would house and crew an ambulance in Dallesport 24/7, 365 days a year. That building is now being used 14 hours a day to service this part of the County. We are asking the Skyline Hospital Board of Directors for a full accounting of use of past EMS Levy funds and a balance thereof. Obviously the public is concerned that levy funds promised to fund ambulance service should be so used. With the ambulance service so severely cut, we would like to know exactly how those funds are and have been spent. This is at a time when Skyline is proposed as the anchor Tennant of the Airport Commercial Development. In summary, we would like an accounting of EMS Levy funds, past and present, that we were assured both in printed material and in person, to allow us to formulate a new action plan to serve our community. Don McDermott, President Dallesport-Murdock Community Council No disrespect intended To the Editor: Jordan Granum’s point is welltaken in his response to my letter to the editor. I meant no disrespect when I described the flag as a “piece of cloth.” It is a powerful symbol of the idea of America, a symbol under which my father and fatherin-law, along with many friends, have been buried. The flag doesn’t need to be used as an object of political pandering by Congressman Hastings, and he ought to be putting his office to better use. The point on which I suspect Jordan and I agree is the shameful manner in which our country has treated those who have fought for her, especially those of the Vietnam era and more recent conflicts. I know too many veterans whose military service has left them doing battle with the military and the VA to receive even the most modest of assistance in the face of terrible personal sacrifice. We should all be demanding that Congressman Hastings work to ensure that those wounded warriors aren’t forgotten or taken for granted. AllSchool reunion set for Aug. 4-5 Arts festival down on The Farm this weekend Fireworks, and family BBQ's aplenty were seen here in Trout Lake last weekend. The weather finally has started to cooperate and summer seems to be in full force now and there are plenty of upcoming events to prove it. Coming up this weekend in Trout Lake is the Festival of the Arts. It will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., once again at The Farm B&B on Sunnyside road. Come and check out the amazing art being created by more than 50 different unique artists. The day will also feature many local and out of area musicians performing both days. Enjoy some of the food and maybe even a cold beer while taking in the great free entertainment. Some the acts this year will include Spring Creek Bluegrass Band, Chigwaya Trout Lake Marimba Band, and Sky in the Road plus many others. News Call to all women in the area, lace up those running shoes and start training Sofie Brubaker for the Wild Woman Trail Marathon and Relay on Saturday, Aug. 11. It will be a weekend of good trails, good food, and good friends. 26.2 miles of girl fun the Wild Woman run is a trail marathon created by and for (primarily) women. Run the whole thing or grab some friends and divvy up the effort. You can have up to four on a team with legs from 4.6 to 8 miles. Sure, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has some hills (and even a 12,276-foot volcano) but don’t let that deter you. You won’t get even near tree line—and with every run up, there’s just as much glorious down. Sign up for just the run, or stay for the entire weekend, if you’d like. You can camp (RV, tent or under the stars) in a big field at the base of Mt. Adams. Wake up to pre-run yoga to energize your legs. After the run, rejuvenate with post-run yoga poses and refuel with some outrageous wood-fired pizza prepared in Solstice’s traveling brick oven. As an extra treat, it just so happens that the stars have aligned and they will be falling from the sky on Saturday night. There’s no better place than Trout Lake— far away from all the city lights—to watch the Perseids meteor showers. Washington; one on Lorena Butte immediately outside of Goldendale, the other on Greyback Mountain just east of the Glenwood Valley across from the snow-capped Mt. Adams. The lookouts, Cathy Marshall at Lorena Butte, and Lori Lorenz at Greyback, are stationary five days with two days off. They both scan for fire and smoke during weekends. 50 years ago- July 5, 1962 • The Klickitat County Historical Society will soon become owner of the Presby mansion, and is making plans for display of many priceless articles of furniture, pictures and documents of yester-years. At a meeting of the board of directors held in Goldendale Monday evening with Miss Pearl Shepard, owner of the home, arrangements were made to pay miss Shepard $7,000 of the $8,000 option agreement, which expired July 1. The remaining $1,000 to be paid within a two week period. The remaining balance of $4,000 will be carried by Miss Shepard over an 8 year period. 75 years ago- July 15, 1937 • The group of gypsies that blew into Goldendale last weekend and established an “office” on Main Street for the purpose of looking into the future for local boys and girls, too, but boys were the more desirable, failed to receive the public notice they expected and their “spiritualistic” readings. The ability for which was imparted in the lady gypsies by a super-natural power, fell completely flat. As a matter of fact, there was no business, and after they attempted to wheedle several local merchants, their kind came into ill-repute and City Marshall W. W. Lear invited the leader of the visitors to take his “spiritualistic” high and mighties either north or south. Compiled by Jean Allyn Smeltzer, of the Klickitat County Historical Society. Hastings to speak on the Cascade Rapids The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum will present an informative presentation on the Cascades, a series of three historically important rapids on the Columbia River. Les Hastings, a retired Stevenson High School math and science teacher, will give the talk Sunday, July 22, at the museum, beginning at 2 p.m. “The Cascades were very important to the early settlers,” explained Hastings. “They were the original gateway for pioneers from the east going to the great northwest. The Lewis and Clark Expedition did the first pass through of the Cascades for the United States, and not long after that pioneers using the Oregon Trail followed them and opened up the Willamette Valley, which gave rise to the territories of Oregon and Washington.” Hastings, a long-time resident of the Columbia Gorge and former board member at the museum, has always found the Cascades an interesting topic, and has given similar presentations to hiking clubs that have made their way through the Columbia River Gorge. The presentation is free with admission and free to members of the museum. The museum is located at 990 SW Rock Creek Drive in Stevenson, adjacent to Skamania Lodge. They are upgrading the dispatch center. The current dispatch center in the courthouse is outdated and overcrowded. The Federal Government is requiring them to change over to digital communication. There will also be better communication where there are currently dead spots, such as Klickitat, Glenwood, Trout Lake; and the area between Goldendale and Bickleton has some bad spots. The delivery of these systems will be accompanied by training, logistics and ship installation, as well as specialist in-country maintenance support. The ScanEagle UAS is being fitted for the fastest ships in the RSN’s fleet, the missile corvettes. According to an Insitu press release, recent RSN sea testing and other trials have demonstrated that the ScanEagle UAS improves situational awareness at sea. ScanEagle is particularly suited to maritime operations and can be used in conjunction with rotary wing aircraft. The system does not require a helicopter deck or hangar storage space in order to be operated, and it can be integrated on small vessels. “Insitu Pacific is extremely pleased to be working closely with the Republic of Singapore Navy for the provision of the ScanEagle UAS. ScanEagle’s proven capability as a highly persistent ISR force multiplier in the maritime domain will provide Navy commanders with an organic ISR capability offering significant operational advantages,” said Insitu Pacific Managing Director Andrew Duggan. “ScanEagle is unique in that it is the only proven fixed wing UAS solution operating from ships in the world today with over 23,000 shipborne flight hours globally. It also has the advantage of not requiring the use of a helicopter deck.” Insitu Pacific, located in Queensland, Australia, has provided UAS services to defense, civil, and commercial interests in the Asia-Pacific region since June 2009. JULY 11, 2012 — 7 GOLDENDALE, WASHINGTON S PORTS Pick-ups a big hit at annual derby ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN REPORTER Veronica Glenn, of Trout Lake was off to a roaring start at the Fourth of July Goldendale Jaycees’ Demolition Derby, but came up short in the finals as Brian Woolery won the car division and $500 prize. Glenn, who participated in her first derby at this year’s event at the fairgrounds pocketed $100 before the demolition derby ever began when she won the time trials and People’s Choice awards. Glenn promised to win a heat and did just that in a great battle with Dale Arp. Arp went home without a win at this year’s derby, but he was presented a trophy for 30 straight years of competition in the annual event. Arp and Glenn tangled in the first heat with Glenn launching crushing front first shots that pushed the rear end of Arp’s car right up into the wheels. Time and again Glenn sacrificed the front end of her 1967 Chevrolet until Arp could go no more. In heat two, it was a battle on luxury sedans, as Woolery in his 1977 Lincoln and Cody Beeks in his 1963 Cadillac pounded their way to a final battle with Woolery winning the $100 heat money. Nothing seemed to phase the Lincoln except for the loss of a bumper. Woolery dealt a vicious blow to Chris Twohy, pinning him between the Lincoln and a concrete barrier to hasten his demise. The final blow came when Woolery planted the right rear of the Lincoln into the Caddy’s grill and Beeks had to concede. Woolery, Glenn and Arp put together great hits in the finals. Early in the going, Woolery slammed the Lincoln rear end into the back of Glenn’s Chevy, lifting it’s back wheels off the ground. Woolery pulled away with Glenn in tow until Twohy put a hit on both cars, breaking them apart. The front end and drive train damage took a toll on Glenn’s car. A final jarring blow from Woolery put Glenn out of action. Woolery then turned his attention to Arp. Woolery dodged several shots from ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN BATTLE OF TWO VS FOUR: Four-wheelers and motorbikes competed on the motocross course during the Goldendale Jaycees’ demolition derby. Sockeye retention prohibited The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife have established a prohibition of retention of sockeye salmon from the mainstream of the Columbia River between the Bonneville Dam and Highway 395 bridge in Pasco. The restriction went into effect July 9 and remains in effect indefinitely. Sockeye are listed for protection in the Snake River under the Endangered Species Act. Non-Indian fisheries are limited to one percent of the harvest of sockeyes. That limit was expected to be reached by July 8. The rule does not affect the taking of chinook salmon. ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN COUP DE GRACE: Brian Woolery, left puts the final hit on Dale Arp’s car to win the finals of the Fourth of July Demolition Derby. Arp and managed to blow out the veteran’s rear tires, which left Arp a sitting duck. Two big hits to the right front end of Arp’s stalled car brought out the white flag and Woolery claimed the $500 first prize. Arp was paid $350 for second place and third place money went to Twohy. With just six cars in the derby, it was a smaller than normal entry, but there was excitement from the beginning with the first ever demo derby pick-up truck competition at Goldendale. Four entries sparred through two heats with Kent McEwen winning both events. McEwen drove a 1972 Dodge pick-up in his first ever demolition derby. In the first heat, all four trucks were taking and giving shots when David Hylton stalled in front of the grandstand and was crunched repeatedly by Dan Young until Hylton’s F100 slowly rolled to its side to the cheers of the huge crowd. Hylton popped out of the truck with hands in the air as if he had just won it all. Following a short delay, McEwen outlasted Young for the victory. The finals got off to a rough start as McEwen and Hylton waited on Young and Darren Scott to enter the arena, losing water in the process until both shut down. When the green flag flew, McEwen and Hylton couldn’t start their trucks. Hylton took a hard hit from Scott and got his truck running enough to push back, but quickly died again for good. Scott and Young battled while McEwen continued to try and fire up his Dodge. Young put one last hit to the front end of Scott’s 1980 F-150 Ford right about the time McEwen came back to life. The remaining two trucks engaged in battle for about two minutes before Young was pinned against a barrier, unable to go into reverse. McEwen took a few shots to the rear quarter panel, near- ly freeing Young, but the contest came to an end with McEwen celebrating with donuts in the muddy arena. Third place and $250 went to Darren Scott. As has been the tradition, bikes and four-wheelers also competed at the event, between derby races. No information on participants or results were available. Fire department water fights got the fans involved during down time and although it looked like the Goldendale city fire department clearly won a head-tohead battle against Rural 7, the fans declared the rural department the winner. ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN GREAT FEELING: Veronica Glenn celebrates her heat victory with her crew. Glenn also won the time trials and Peoples’ Choice award. ANDREW CHRISTIANSEN ROLLED: David Hylton’s pick-up was knocked onto its side to the delight of the crowd during the first heat of the pick-up truck derby. 8 — JULY 11, 2012 GOLDENDALE, WASHINGTON R ECORDS WEATHER WHAT’S HAPPENING On-going Events Every Monday •Monday evening jam sessions in front of Dr. Ogden’s office at 7 p.m. All musicians and listeners welcome. 7734114. •Ultimate Frisbee Mondays at Sorosis Park baseball fields in The Dalles at 6 p.m. Everyone welcome, no experience or equipment necessary, geared toward teens and adults.
