A nonprofit Humane Society serving Greater Cleveland and Cuyahoga County since 1913. Patter March 2011 Executive Director Letter pg. 2 Feline Friends pg. 4 Pledge for Pets pg. 5 Cleveland APL Dog Enrichment Volunteers Sue and Andy Richmond knew there was something different about Al Green the first time they prepared to take him for a walk last summer. Most shelter dogs are excited to get out of their kennels and go outside, but Al Green, a white German Shepherd mix with some unique markings, was excited just to be with Sue and her 13-year-old son. “The image of Andy walking down the hall, Al dancing around at his feet, looking up at him, is one I will never forget, “ Sue recalled. “And once he got outside, he reveled in the outdoors. He would roll in the grass, giddy with laughter. This is how he captured our hearts as well as the hearts of every other dog walker! That and those silly spotted ears!” Like his soul-singer namesake, Al Green had a lot of fans. Volunteers loved spending time with him, and staff members included him in media appearances to show everyone what a great dog Al was. After nearly a month in the shelter, Al Green finally was adopted! Sadly, just two days later he was returned because he didn’t get along with the other dog in the home. When Sue and Andy came in each week for their volunteer shifts, they had mixed emotions when they saw Al. They looked forward to walking him, but they were disappointed that no one had Pet Patter 8pgs Q12011.indd 1 adopted him yet. One day, Sue realized she actually was hoping Al would be there. The Richmonds didn’t have any other dogs at home, but they did have three cats and they didn’t know how Al would react to them. Fortunately, they were able to get an answer right in the shelter. They walked Al past one of our glass-enclosed cat playrooms and he had no interest! Sue and Andy took Al home for the weekend on the condition that they could return him if there was a problem with the cats. They limited his access in the house so the cats had a place to hide. Soon he and the cats were getting along just fine. These days, Al enjoys play time in the back yard, walking in the neighborhood and lying on the grass or the couch, depending on the weather. He even has his own Facebook page! “Al Green is the coolest dog,” Sue said. “He is smart, adorable, personable, happy and friendly.” 1/28/11 1:21 PM Roo’s News Sharon Harvey and Roo Whether or not you like math, I have an equation to share with you that I think you’ll love: Collaboration + Cooperation + Community Support + Passion = Helping More Animals! Over and over again, the Cleveland APL has put this equation to the test, and over and over again it works, and I’d like to celebrate just a couple of wonderful outcomes with you. Through our animal transfer program in 2010, we brought nearly 1,100 animals into the APL for adoption from other shelters or rescue groups that needed our help. Cleveland’s Division of Animal Services (formerly Cleveland City Kennel) was our top partner, with 654 of the 958 dogs we transferred in from other shelters coming from them. We also reached out to rescue groups for help with 130 animals who we found not to be good candidates for shelter life. PAWS Ohio was our top partner in this collaborative effort. These partnerships, and the many others I don’t have the space to list, are a beautiful illustration of how private humane societies, municipal shelters, and rescue groups can and should work together to save more lives. Another shining outcome has been our amazing, and nationally-recognized, cat adoption promotion initiatives. These events have showcased the critical and cooperative role our community plays in saving lives. With the combined support of our local media, who spread the word about the need to adopt, and the thousands of adopters who responded, more happy endings were created for our cats than ever before! During our two-day Super Adoptathon in December, made possible by a grant from the ASPCA, 137 cats and 46 dogs found new best friends and went home for the holidays. As a result of successful and progressive adoption initiatives such as this, we have been invited to share our experience and speak at conferences across the country, the most recent being Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets Conference, so that other shelters and rescue groups can use this model to save more lives – and from the reports I’ve gotten, it’s working! Each and every one of you plays a critical role in our life-saving equation. Thank you for what you’ve done so far, and thank you in advance for your continued commitment to being part of an equation that ultimately helps more animals. 2 Pet Patter 8pgs Q12011.indd 2 1/28/11 1:21 PM A Visit from Nikita As a follow up to our last issue of Pet Patter, Nikita and her six littermates came to our shelter last summer when they were only 14 days old after their mother died of poisoning. Even with expert care, the survival of orphaned pups this young can be pretty iffy. So, our staff quickly sprung into action and Adoptions Supervisor Bree Alcox assumed the role of the puppies’ foster mom. In December, a few months after Nikita was adopted, she and her mom and dad visited the shelter to meet Bree and several other APL people who she had befriended through her blog. And WOW, were we ever excited to see her and share the joy of a pup who had such a hard start in life but now is growing up in a wonderful, loving home with a family who’s devoted to her. You, too, can continue to follow Nikita’s adventures at http://nikitaland. wordpress.com. Saving Lives and Preventing Unwanted Births! In 2010, a total of 11,199 spay and neuter surgeries were performed at the Cleveland APL through the combined efforts of our incredible APL Shelter Clinic team and Animal Welfare Clinic (AWC) team. A total of 4,497 Cleveland APL shelter animals were sterilized, or “fixed,” before adoption and another 6,702 animals were sterilized through the Cleveland APL’s Animal Welfare Clinic. The AWC is a low-cost spay/neuter program that provides highquality, affordable surgery to other animal welfare groups, rescue groups, animal shelters, and feral or community cat caregivers. The goal of this clinic is to increase the number of animals in our region that are sterilized prior to adoption and decrease the number of homeless, free-roaming, “community” cats living on our streets – and we did just that for 1,333 adoptable animals from other rescue groups and shelters and a whopping 5,369 stray cats through our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program! We extend our most sincere thanks to the Bernice Barbour Foundation, Inc., Humane Society of the United States, Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a Keybank Trust, Ohio Pet Fund, and PetSmart Charities for awarding grants to the Cleveland APL’s “Spay it Forward” program that allowed us to significantly reduce the cost of surgery for our TNR clients, and in turn, assist more free-roaming, community cats than ever before. We also applaud the City of Cleveland for continuing to allocate funding for its residents that allows them extremely affordable access to the Cleveland APL’s TNR program. Finally, during PetFix Northeast Ohio’s monthly visits to the Cleveland APL in its mobile spay/ neuter clinic, 257 animals who were owned and loved by their lowincome guardians were sterilized. For more information on the Cleveland APL’s Animal Welfare Clinic or TNR programs or on PetFix, visit our website at www. ClevelandAPL.org. March 2011 Pet Patter 8pgs Q12011.indd 3 1/28/11 1:21 PM BFFs: Best Feline Friends Everyone needs a best friend, and Melanie and Wimbly are no exception. These two gals met under less than ideal circumstances, but finding each other ultimately helped both of them find their happy endings. Melanie originally came to the Cleveland APL in October 2009 as a stray. The 2-year-old black-and-white cat was very shy, so in a shelter full of animals looking for attention and new homes, her laid-back approach was working against her. She stayed here for four months before someone decided to adopt her. Unfortunately, the man who took Melanie home passed away and there was no one else who could permanently care for her. So Melanie returned to the Cleveland APL, where this time her wait would be much longer. Meanwhile, another shy black-and- white cat came in to our shelter after being found abandoned in a house with some other cats. Wimbly ended up needing treatment for an upper respiratory infection (URI), a highly contagious disease, so thankfully, one of our wonderful foster care volunteers agreed to take her so she could receive this care. Melanie left, Wimbly above. Photos by: Dan Sandy A couple of weeks later, a fully recovered Wimbly was back at the APL and up for adoption. But, although she had gotten over her infection, she hadn’t gotten over her shyness, so she continued to be overlooked by potential adopters. One day, we decided to move her into one of our playrooms, where she would have a chance to interact with other cats and perhaps be more visible to shelter visitors. Purely by chance, Melanie was moved into the same playroom the same day, Other Ways to Give Many generous individuals choose to donate to the Cleveland APL in lieu of giving gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Bat Mitzvahs, Bar Mitzvahs, etc. Their thoughtfulness is a wonderful tribute to their love for animals. Call 216-344-1353 if you would like to learn more about how your celebration can help the APL’s homeless animals. 4 Pet Patter 8pgs Q12011.indd 4 1/28/11 1:21 PM BFFs (continued) and a beautiful friendship was born! As one of our cat care volunteers reported, “They play together, snuggle up together when they sleep, and respond to new situations much better since they have each other.” After seeing the obvious bond the two cats had formed, our staff and volunteers were determined to see Melanie and Wimbly go home together. And that is exactly what happened. During our Super Adoptathon in December, Jenny D’Allura came in looking for a kitten – or so she thought. After seeing that most of the kittens had already been adopted, the friend who accompanied Jenny suggested looking at the adult cats. Wimbly and Melanie were among the first cats they saw, “and they were adorable,” Jenny recalled. “We saw the note about how they had bonded and I understood that it would be hard on them to separate them. They both let me pet them and get to know them, so it took about two minutes to decide to take them home.” Both cats have settled into their new home nicely, Jenny said. “Wimbly is very playful and loves playing with balls or mouse toys. Melanie is a snuggler. If my lap is available, she is sitting on it. And they are always playing with each other so that has really supported my decision.“ Happenings Become a Q Cash Captain, Kid, or School and Help Homeless Animals! The 6th Annual Q104 Pledge for Pets Radiothon fundraiser will be held on May 13th and 14th. Toohey & Fee, Q104’s morning show team, will share heartwarming stories about animals helped by the APL — and of the special people who rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt them. Leading up to the Radiothon, you can be a part of making a difference by signing up to be a “Q Cash Captain.” Q Cash Captains collect Doggy Dollars and Kitty Kash from their families, friends and coworkers, helping the animals at the APL in the process! Children under the age of 18 can sign up to be “Q Cash Kids.” Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians and his wife, Amy, are sponsoring this program again this year! And, back again for a second year is “Q Cash Schools,” which involves classes, grades, and entire schools. Very cool prizes will be given to the top Q Cash Captain and Q Cash Kid. The winning Q Cash School will get an assembly complete with a visit by Toohey & Fee and Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns and his wife, Annie. It is easy to get involved! Sign up NOW at www.ClevelandAPL.org or call 216377-1628 and be a part of creating happy endings for homeless animals! For dates and times, visit our website at www.ClevelandAPL.org. Becky and her husband, Phil, are proud to be owned by four dogs (three of whom are rescued), and two cats (one of whom was adopted from the Cleveland APL during Becky’s Radiothon phone bank shift)! Becky became a member of the APL Board of Trustees in 2007 because of her love for shelter animals and her strong belief in the APL’s mission. Phil hopes she will get her “pet fix” at the shelter without adopting all the animals. Becky was born in Mount Pleasant, PA, but grew up in the Cleveland area. She received her BA degree from Kent State University and JD from the University of Akron. Until They Find Their New Home and Family... The Cleveland Animal Protective League lovingly cares for thousands of homeless, injured and abused animals each year. For some, their cage at the APL, complete with a warm bed, toys, plenty of food and water, and lots of TLC, is the only “home” they have ever known. For others, it’s a temporary home until Lady was with us 4 months and 8 days. Adopted! they find the love of another family. For all of them, it’s the reason they’re getting a second chance. Our annual cage sponsors bring hope and comfort to our animals while they Brownie was with us 1 month and 6 days. Adopted! wait for their future mom or dad to adopt them and take them home— permanently. We ask that you help us to provide all of the care and love Melanie was with us 6 months and 12 days. Adopted! they need while they are with us by becoming a cage sponsor. Your cage sponsorship will be recognized with a plaque on a cage in our cat, dog or small mammal adoption center areas. You may choose to make your cage sponsorship in honor or in memory of a special pet or person or you may choose to advertise your business. Cage sponsorships are renewable every year. At the Cleveland Animal Protective League, healthy, friendly animals stay with us until they are adopted. We all know a cage in a shelter is not a permanent home, but with your cage sponsorship, we can make it a temporary home away from home until they have one of their own by providing all the care that is needed—and that they so rightfully deserve.
