12 Days and Night Before Christmas. Gather the entire family together for this special presentation.
Experience the unique spirit of Christmas as people from the past bring two classic Christmas stories to
life (1 hr.) Art Museums. Dec. 24. 10:30 a.m., 12:30 & 2 p.m. Free reservation required in addition
to admission ticket.
A 1940s Bassett Hall Christmas. Imagine celebrating Christmas with the Rockefellers as you enjoy
an evening at Bassett Hall. Multiple lighted trees and candles in every window will welcome you to the
festively decorated house. The dining room table will be set for a lavish Christmas dinner party.
Be entertained by carolers and enjoy hot cider and a cookie served in the cottage. Take a winter
garden stroll to see the lighted 10-foot-tall tree in the Tea House. (30 mins.) Bassett Hall.

“A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Bring the family for this fast-and-fun 30-minute street
theatre retelling of Charles Dickens’ holiday favorite. The Virginia Theatre Machine returns to delight

Annual Christmas Homes Tour. 56th Annual Christmas Homes Tour, presented by the Green Spring
Garden Club Inc., features lovely houses decorated with holiday florals. Visit the Coke-Garrett,
Grissell Hay Lodging, Ludwell-Paradise, Prentis, and William Waters houses, all located in and
around The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Revolutionary City. Tour tickets are available only
through the Green Spring Garden Club. Advance tickets are recommended. To order tickets by mail
from Sep. 18–Nov. 20, and to find more detailed information on tour houses, visit the garden club’s
website: http://www.greenspringgardenclub.org/christmas-homes-tour. Ticket representatives will
be at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center and the Williamsburg Lodge on Friday, Dec.
4, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Tickets will also be available at each house on
the tour during the Saturday tour hours. Cash and checks only will be accepted at these locations.

Community Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Make this annual community event part of your
Christmas tradition. Witness the firing of the Christmas guns at 5 p.m., then listen to a special reading
of The Night Before Christmas. Hear about the first Christmas tree in the United States, then join the
caroling as the large evergreen tree on Market Square is lighted. Co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of

Gloucester Street. It’s a lovely December evening
to celebrate the season! Usher in your festivities
with performances by the Fifes and Drums, and join
in the carols as Duke of Gloucester Street glows with
our lighted cressets. Visit the Raleigh Tavern as it
comes alive with music, dancing, and conversation

Christmastide at Home. Join us for an exciting
journey back in time to experience Williamsburg
Christmases of the past. Discover our colonial
traditions and customs, find out about the first Christmas tree in Williamsburg, and learn how Colonial

The Comet Comes to Williamsburg. A major religious revival swept through colonial America shortly before
the Revolution. Hear a stirring sermon from the 18th century’s most dynamic evangelist, the Rev. George
Whitefield, at this reenactment of his dynamic presentation at Bruton Parish Church, set during his visit to
Williamsburg in December 1739. (45 mins.) Bruton Parish Church. Dec. 16. 2 p.m. No ticket required.
Cry Witch. You are the jury in this candlelit inquiry into the charges of witchcraft brought against
Grace Sherwood in 1706. Ask questions of the witnesses, weigh the evidence, and determine the guilt or
innocence of “the Virginia Witch.” Not appropriate for young children due to subject matter and intense

Decorating the Private Homes. Join us for the 23rd anniversary of this fun-filled program celebrating
the decorating efforts of the employees living in Colonial Williamsburg’s restored private residences.
This popular program includes holiday decorating tips in the “Williamsburg way,” announcement of the
winners of the private homes decorating contest, and intriguing facts about what goes into decorating

Dressing the Fashionable Bride: A Gown in Three Days. The holiday
season–a time of celebration–was a favorite time for 18th century weddings.
Miss Betsy Farrow, niece to milliner Margaret Hunter, is getting married in
the new year–January 5, 1775. All of the shop’s hands are busy preparing

box? Find out about the customs and practices of the enslaved and their

Father Christmas Strolling the Square. Have you made your wish list? Visit

Firing of the Christmas Guns. In the 18th century, Virginians fired guns to celebrate the
Christmas season. Join us for a re-creation of this event. (25 mins.) Duke of Gloucester Street.

From Hog to Ham. Hogs provided a significant source of meat in the 18th century. Learn about
butchering and the process for salt-curing the meat to preserve it. The Foodways staff will

Ghosts Amongst Us. After dark, Williamsburg has a spirited history to tell. Enter some of the haunted
buildings and sites, meet their ghostly inhabitants, and encounter some who have lived to tell of
their supernatural experiences. Each of these one-hour walking tours introduces you to a different
cast of characters. Due to subject matter, this program is not appropriate for young children. (1

Good Fires, Good Company, and Diversions: The Compliments of the Season at the Powell House.
The Powells are getting ready for the upcoming holidays! Family will be coming home. Special meals and
decorations are being made. There’s even singing and dancing. Come “home” to the Powell House and
discover how an 18th-century household prepared for this special time. Activities change throughout the
day. The kitchen operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Christmas Day). Powell House.

Grand Illumination and Fireworks. In the 18th century,
illuminations, which included the firing of guns and lighting of
fireworks, were held to celebrate major events. Join Colonial
Williamsburg for this special day by strolling the Revolutionary
City and viewing all our decorations. Enjoy musical performances
from multiple stages and delight in fireworks displays from three
locations–the Governor’s Palace, Magazine, and Capitol at 7

A Grand Medley of Entertainments. Owen Murdock’s company gamely tries to present a Grand
Medley—an 18th-century traveling variety show! They have high hopes of amazing feats, strange beasts,
and fast-paced hilarity, but things aren’t going well for the company. Their misfortunes provide a
comedy of errors for the entire family to enjoy. A colonial entertainment so amusing that even Colonel

NEW Harlequin’s Holiday. Follow a mischievous scamp as he wins the heart of his true love

NEW A Harvest of Stories. What better way to celebrate the end of harvest season than with

A Hero’s Homeward Journey. As the American Revolutionary War
comes to an end, Gen. George Washington, the former commander-inchief of the Continental Army, lays aside the mantle of war and begins
his last, long, slow march home to private life. It is 1783, and his wife,
Martha, awaits his arrival at Mount Vernon. Snow, ice, and a grateful
public at every stop slow his travels. Will he make it home in time to
celebrate Christmas with his family? (1 hr.) Art Museums. Dec. 1, 8,

Holiday Auctions. Take part in an exciting auction. Bid on select items

wreaths and more. We will work with live and artificial components and show you how to maintain

Joy in the Morning. Gather to hear Pastor Gowan Pamphlet’s inspirational message for the
Christmas season. The former slave and popular Baptist preacher offers a message of inspiration,

Lanthorn Tour. The magic of the Revolutionary City comes to
life by candlelight as you explore the shops and workplaces of
Williamsburg’s most accomplished tradespeople. Nearly half
of the population of Williamsburg in the 1770s worked with
their hands to provide goods and services. On this walking
tour, you’ll experience the lives of those who were the original
“silent majority,” and learn about the technology of the trades
and the circumstances that shaped Virginia’s economy. Weather

Secrets of the Chocolate Maker. Almost everyone loves chocolate! Find out how chocolate was used in
18th-century recipes and explore the process of roasting, shelling, and crushing the cocoa beans, then

A Sermon for the Season. Gather in the historic
Bruton Parish Church for a half-hour presentation of
excerpts from an 18th-century sermon of the holiday
season. Before the Revolution, most of the faculty
members at William & Mary were ordained ministers,
who regularly read sermons for the edification of the
students. The Rev. John Camm, a loyalist Anglican
minister and President of the College, delivers this
sermon for the season. (30 mins.) Bruton Parish

The Official Colonial Williamsburg Ghost Walk. Tales say
that ghosts haunt the taverns and historic buildings of Colonial

George Washington has retired from public life and the
presidency to live the peaceful life under his vine and fig tree.
However, Adams’ calling for a posture of defense against France,

the Miller Rowe Consort from Spartanburg, S.C. Special arrangements showcase the unique sounds
of Michael Miller on classical guitar and David Rowe on his handmade Appalachian dulcimer and
hammered dulcimer. This duo blends the warmth and richness of classical guitar with the exciting,

Banjo on My Knee. Historian Carson Hudson takes a light-hearted look at the banjo and American
history, from the instrument’s African roots into today’s familiar form. Hear tunes played on

A Big Band Christmas. Swing to an evening of holiday classics from the 1930s and 1940s. The

Brasstastic Holidays! Continue your holiday festivities with the Eastern Virginia Brass and sing

A Charles Dickens Christmas. Readings from the quintessential Christmas author paired with the
music of Victorian England make a delightful holiday tradition. Gabe Stone, Stephen Christoff, Jan
Tilley, and David Gardner perform on an assortment of period instruments sure to delight audiences of

Christmas Brass. Talented musicians Gabe Stone, Stephen Christoff and Steve Ruckle offer a
fascinating and tuneful show featuring the serpent and sackbut—rare brass instruments from the 18th

Christmas Dreams. The entire family will want to experience those magical moments of Christmas
