We had a fun night at the clubhouse on February 20th, where we held the
annual banquet. Thank you very much to Nancy Weeks for putting
together the wonderful meal, and to Nora MacDonald for decorating.
Thanks to everyone that helped setup and participated!
Congratulations go out to Julie Anderson, who has been honored as the
recipient of the 2015 Sportsmanship Award! Thank you for Julie for hard
work, time, and generosity!
Congratulations go out to those that were awarded medals and/or patches at
the banquet, with the most rides award going to Cathy Small, with 15 of 15
rides. A list of awards and sponsors are listed further on in the newsletter.
Please give a big shout-out and congratulations to Nancy Weeks! A
nomination was sent in for a Leaders and Luminaries award, given to a
leader/luminary in a non-profit organization. Nancy Weeks was the chosen
recipient!! Included at the end of this newsletter is the nomination writeup that was sent in by Cathy Small.
We have been discussing ways for improving our club. At the meeting in
March the agenda will be to use just the bare minimum of our normal
agenda, to cover any business decisions that must be made. Then, we will
move into a discussion session to have members provide input and ideas
for what we can do to for improvements. Please come to the March
meeting so you can share their ideas and opinions!

Unfortunately in 2015 there were a lot of rides that
changed or were cancelled, and so the year ended
with no gold winners as there were not enough
hours to earn that qualification. Congratulations to

MTRA Secretary’s Report – December 12, 2015
Meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm by President
Trudy Bickford.
Guests Introduction/New Members: None
Secretary’s Report: A motion to accept the
November Secretary’s Report as posted in the
Hoofbeats was made, seconded, and passed.
Treasurer’s Report: Copies of the report was
passed out for review. Cathy reviewed it all with
the membership.
Board of Director’s: No Report
Committees:
Trail Committee: A motion was made, seconded,
and passed to hold our Banquet on February 20,
HOOFBEATS
2016, at the clubhouse with a pot luck supper and
awards to be given out after. No membership
meeting with take place that night. The trail
committee set a meeting to discuss details of this
banquet for Dec. 17th at the clubhouse at 7 p.m.
Horse Show Committee: We will be having a
short meeting after the Christmas party tonight.
Publicity: No Report
Building and Land: We would like to thank Rick
and Nora for donating and installing a new kitchen
sink and facet. It will be greatly appreciated. Also
for installing a shelf above the stove for our
microwave to set instead of taking up much needed
counter space.
Fund Raising: Trudy is working on a location (the
church we usually use) and a date for a Scrapping
book fund raiser.
Food: No Report
Entertainment: No Report
Parade: No Report
Hospitality: A Christmas Card was sent around for
members to sign and it will be sent to Larry Felt.
He is now in Goudreau’s Retirement Inn, 110
College Avenue, Waterville. I’m sure he would
love to receive card from everybody.
Junior’s Report: The juniors have taken their
tests.
Val presented what she purchased with her junior
money – New spurs, Chaps, Brush, lunge whip
Brynn presented what she purchased with her
junior money – New Helmet, Horse Treats, New
Boots.
Lauren presented what she purchased with her
junior money – A fake horse tail, a fly bonnet, and
fleece.
Correspondence Report: Our Libaility Insurance
bill was received and discussed. Cathy will discuss
with Sandy to get clarification before paying the
bill.
Old Business: Board of Director’s sign up sheet
went around.
New Business: No Report

Remarks for the good of the order: Cathy asked
if anybody fed their horses beet pulp because she
has a bag she would like to give to somebody
because her horse won’t eat it. Nobody does.
Donation of $25. was received from Maine
Mounted Search and Rescue for the use of our club
and grounds.
Brags: Michelle Morris donated $5.00 for her
brags.
Motion made to adjourn at 7:45 pm.
We then preceeded with your annual Chirstmas
Party.

Congratulations goes to Nancy Weeks for being nominated for the Leaders and Luminaries Award
sponsored by The Bank of Maine/Camden National Bank This award recognizes outstanding Leadership in
the nonprofit community.
They asked for an explanation regarding any significant changes in net assets position, expense structure, or
any revenue generation. This was what was submitted:
The purpose of The Maine Trail Riders Association, Inc., which was established in 1957, is to encourage,
foster, cultivate and promote the art of horsemanship; to engage in, promote, sponsor, and conduct trail rides
with horses and ponies; to conduct, engage in, sponsor, and participate in sporting events, exhibitions, parades,
fairs, and shows having activities involving the use of horses and ponies; to encourage and promote proper
equestrian etiquette and sportsmanship in group riding; to promote, encourage, and cultivate the proper care,
handling, riding, and training of horses; and to cooperate, exchange information, and participate in activities
with associations, clubs, and corporations organized for similar purposes. To purchase, lease, hold, sell,
develop, mortgage, convey, or otherwise acquire or dispose of real and personal property necessary or proper
for the carrying out of the above stated purposes. Generally to do any and all other acts and to undertake and
engage in, transact, and carry on any and all kinds of business that may be lawfully carried on by corporations
organized and existing under Title 13, Chapter 81 of the Maine Revised Statutes and amendments thereto.
MTRA shall not be conducted for profit nor shall any officer or director receive any salary, wage, commission,
or dividend there from nor shall any of the same or any other individual profit from the operations of this
Corporation's affairs or business. In no event shall any net income inure for the benefit of any private
individual.
Nancy Weeks is one of five Honorary Members (or lifetime member) and one of nine Board of Directors for
the Maine Trail Riders Association. She has played a leadership role by being the president for 3 years and
also being a Board Member, Junior Advisor, and head of several of our committees which include our Food
Committee and Building and Land Committee. Nancy heads up all of our fund raising by spending her time
coordinating what needs to be done when we raise money for the club by serving food with her mobile food
shack at places like Litchfield Fair every year, and this year we supplied food for an open house at Save Haven
Stables in Durham, Maine. She also is responsible for running the food sales portion at our annual spring and
fall horse shows located at our club house in Litchfield. The food committee will also be running the food
booth at Litchfield Fairground for the National Barrel Race Association for 3 days at the end of September.
Running our Junior Program has been one of her passions. The Junior Program has qualifications that each
junior member has to accomplish during the year. They have to participate in at least 1 hour on ½ of the
general membership monthly meetings from January to December. They have to participate in a minimum of
3 meetings or miss no more than 1 meeting if additional meetings are added to the scheduled. They have to
assist in a club fund-raiser, work bee or Jr. fund-raisers for a minimum of 10 hours. The juniors are required
to earn their own money and the club will match up to $200.00 per year. The money they earn can be used for
riding lessons, clinics or symposiums, farm visits, horse camps, to purchase a horse, tack, or riding apparel, or
other horse relate events as approved by the BOD’s.
Nancy has accomplished many activities around our club grounds like interacting, advising, and assisting the
local 4-H group to clean and paint our horse show ring. This was a great community services for the 4-H
group. Anything that needs to be maintained, fixed, or built around our clubhouse Nancy is there to see that it
gets done.
Nancy has also spend many, many hours with our members out on the trails riding, walking, and maintaining
trails and repairing bridges to make them safe for horses to ride across. She is such a wonderful person and
one of our greatest assets and that is why I am nominating her for your Leaders & Luminaries Award. Thanks
you for considering Nancy and the Maine Trail Riders Association.
