70th ANNUAL
CHATHAM KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL
2015
The Festival Committee expresses its appreciation to all students, parents and
teachers who continue to participate in the Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival.
The generous financial contributions of many in the community to our Festival
Awards make it possible to recognize the hard work of many students.
A donation to Friends of the Festival provides funding for adjudicator fees and
venue rental as well as other operational expenses. This financial support is
necessary to maintain this musical experience for the youth in our community.
We offer sincere thanks to all donors. Charitable donation tax receipts are
available for contributions to the Festival Awards Fund and Friends of the
Festival.
Volunteers are the backbone of the Festival. Without them the Festival would not
function. The committee wishes to thank all of those faithful individuals who
contribute their time to this worthy annual event.

Joel Verkaik
Oboist Joel Verkaik is currently pursuing doctoral studies in baroque oboe performance at
McGill University. His initial private oboe studies in Chatham were with Kristen Lapointe. He
studied piano with Sue Lowther, Christine Tithecott, and Doris Anderson, as well as recorder
with his mother, Carol Revell, and theory and history with Charlene Farrell. He sang in choirs
under the direction of Janet Wake
, Joy Anderson, and Jim Brown, and performed in the Chatham Junior Concert Band and
bands at Ursuline College. Joel went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Wilfrid Laurier
University and a master’s degree at the University of Ottawa in oboe performance. During
this time, he was an active freelance performer with some of Canada’s most celebrated
ensembles, including the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre
Orchestra, as well as with internationally renowned artists Anton Kuerti, Pinchas Zukerman,
and Simon Streatfield. After his master’s, Joel decided to pursue the specialist field of early
music and spent a year abroad, studying baroque oboe at the Conservatory of Amsterdam
and playing concerts in the Netherlands, Germany, and Salzburg. He also participated in the
Dartington International Summer School in Devon, England.
Upon returning to Canada in 2012, Joel settled in Montreal, where he has since performed
with prestigious baroque ensembles such as Caprice, les Boreades, and la Société de
Musique Ancienne de Montréal, as well as Toronto’s Aradia Ensemble, with whom he
recorded an album of Purcell theatre music in 2013 (Naxos, release pending). Upcoming
engagements include a feature concert with the McGill Baroque Orchestra, the orchestra of
the International Organ Society Competition, and a recording of works by André Gagnon.
Joel is also the leader of an ensemble of professional Montreal baroque musicians called
Ensemble Énigme.
Joel has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards. He was the winner of the
Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival’s Wayne Wagenarr Memorial Trophy for seven consecutive
years, and also received scholarships for his studies at Wilfrid Laurier, the University of
Ottawa, and McGill. He was the recipient of the Astral Media Award for the National Arts
Centre (2013), and a 2014 Canada Council for the Arts travel grant. He has played with the
National Youth Orchestra of Canada (2004) and l’orchestre de la francophonie (2008–2010),
and has travelled to the United States, Mexico, and Eastern Canada to give workshops,
masterclasses, recitals, and concert tours.
Joel is also a dedicated teacher, working with several schools in Montreal as a private oboe
instructor. Apart from performance, study, and teaching, Joel is an avid chess player and
cook, a cat owner, and a lover of critical theory.

Dr. Jacqueline (Nelson) Wolting
Dr. Jacqueline (Nelson) Wolting grew up in Glencoe and Chatham,
Ontario. She studied piano (Charlene Farrell) and voice (Christine
Prosser, Kevin McMillan) locally, singing at numerous C-K community
events, churches and CKSS school musicals throughout high school She
was an annual winner in the Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival, competing
at the provincial level during high school and university. While completing
her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance at the University of Western
Ontario, she taught voice lessons, directed a church children’s choir and
performed lead roles in London Musical Theatre’s productions of Patience
and The Yeomen of the Guard. She always knew she might pursue a
career in medicine, and credits her wonderful, supportive parents (Dr.
Susan Munro, a local family physician and Mr. Bruce Nelson, a nowretired CKSS music teacher) for her somewhat convoluted career path.
Dr. Wolting completed her medical degree at The University of Western
Ontario and her residency in Family Medicine at the University of British
Columbia. She now practices Family Medicine in Chatham-Kent,
including delivering babies and caring for hospital in-patients. She dusts
off her musical theatre skills on a nightly basis to sing bedtime “lullabies”
from Gershwin to Sondheim to her two young children. She also enjoys
contributing her musical talents to her church community and to the
special celebrations of her friends and family. Dr. Wolting extends her
thanks to the many volunteers who support the Chatham Kiwanis Music
Festival and continue to provide young musicians this opportunity to hone
their skills.

Objects of Kiwanis
 To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than
to the material values of life.
 To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all
human relationships.
 To promote the adoption and the application of higher
social, business and professional standards.
 To develop by precept and example, a more intelligent,
aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
 To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to
form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and
to build better communities.
 To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound
public opinion and high idealism which make possible the
increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.
