The caller says they’re from the ATO (or other reputable financial institution). They want you to pay a debt (which you know nothing about), or are asking for your personal details. But it doesn’t seem quite right. Maybe the caller: • is aggressive • threatens that if you don’t pay you will be arrested and sent to jail, or • tries to make you call another number outside normal business hours. Or maybe you have received an email or SMS offering you a tax refund or asking for personal details, but it just smells wrong. What to do if you think it is a scam? You need to check it out. If you get a phone call, ask the caller for: • their full name and extension number, • their team leader’s full name and extension number. You can call the ATO on 1800008540 to verify that the caller is from the ATO. If the caller was from another institution, get in contact with their head office. If you receive an email or SMS, do not open any attachments or hyperlinks. You can report the email by forwarding the whole email to the ATO AT [email protected]. You should then delete the email or SMS. You can also call the ATO on 1800008540 to report the email or SMS. (Source: ATO) Broadwater Dredge Considered to Attract Sailing Events The Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is exploring the possibility of creating facilities and capabilities for sailing events at the Broadwater. GCWA CEO Hal Morris said it could be a big tourist dollar attraction for the Gold Coast. “The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, which is a series of events leading up to the America’s Cup, is the type of sailing race that could come to the Gold Coast in 2019 if we had an appropriate sailing basin. This event has galvanised proponents to initiate a discussion about a RED Supportin g the commun ity you live dedicated sailing basin for the Gold Coast Broadwater,” Mr Morris said. The GCWA is responsible for giving consent for holding aquatic events on The Broadwater. “We embrace the opportunity to explore how a sailing basin in the Broadwater aligns with the sustainable use, management and development of the Gold Coast waterways into the future, having regard to the benefits for and impacts on the community, environment and economy of our City,” said Mr Morris. GCWA’s preliminary investigation will involve exploring stakeholder support, financial and legislative viability, and environmental impacts of dredging for a sailing basin in the Broadwater. “We aim to establish a consensus approach to achieving multiple benefits for local businesses, sporting communities and our valued ecosystems. As a lead agency responsible for managing activities on the Broadwater, we want to make sure we play our part in attracting exciting sporting events and promoting the idyllic lifestyle of the Gold Coast. We will take a balanced approach that considers the important environmental values of our waterways and preserves the important recreational asset it provides to the community,” said Mr Morris. Free Legal Advice for Migrants The St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland is offering a free advisory service to people who can’t afford a migration agent or lawyer. Gerry Byrne from the Migration Advice Service (MAS) said a wide range of people can use the service. “People wanting to bring their families to Australia, victims of domestic violence, refugee and asylum seekers, skilled applicants, employer sponsored applicants, or simply people who are looking for options to remain in Australia. MAS has also seen people who are about to have their visas cancelled, or people who are being removed from Australia. There have also been citizenship inquiries. In 2015 MAS assisted people from 39 nationalities.” Byrne said one of the most memorable cases at MAS was helping a victim of domestic violence. “One client was a victim of domestic violence whose marriage had broken down and MAS was able to advise her on how she could apply for permanent residence on the basis of domestic violence,” said Byrne. Since starting in February 2011, MAS has assisted about 600 needy people. The MAS service is available to all Gold Coasters, as well as those in Logan and Brisbane. The service is offered on a needs but flexible basis, depending on personal circumstances. For more information or to make an appointment call 0487347858 between 6pm and 9pm, Monday to Friday. BLUE in COMMUN ITY NEWSLET TER TOTAL PRIZ E VALUE Supporting the community you live in COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER www.fridayflyer.com.au Many More Years of TLC Supporting Sick Kids The TLC for Kids Gold Coast Affiliate is celebrating one year of helping sick kids in need. To celebrate, the volunteer-based organisation is inviting the community to its 1st Birthday Charity Dinner. It will also be a big night of fundraising to ensure the program can continue. TLC Kids provides free emotional and practical support for sick children at Tweed Hospital and the Gold Coast University Hospital. In the program, healthcare professionals refer children to TLC for Kids and their response is the fastest of its kind in Australia. TLC for Kids Team Leader Dale Mansfield said any child with any illness can access the service. “TLC for Kids has no criteria, no waiting lists and helps any child with any illness. TLC for Kids is known as the fire brigade of children’s charities as they are unique in responding to every request within 2448 hours.” Mansfield said a highlight of the past year was helping a young girl do her homework while in hospital. “One highlight was definitely delivering our very first RAPID Request. A young girl in the Tweed Hospital had been in hospital for quite some time, and still liked to do her homework, but her laptop broke the week before. So her request was for a brand new laptop. It was magical being able to do this for her, and to distract her time in hospital by having a new laptop, for homework and games,” said Mansfield. One of the biggest challenges facing children in hospital is that they don’t meet the criteria required by other programs. “It’s surprising how many children fall through the gaps of the majority of some healthcare support services. In some cases, the child or family may have to wait up to an entire year to receive any form of support. The aim of TLC for Kids is to reach those children who are distressed and in need of immediate help or who, by sheer misfortune, don’t meet the criteria of the existing services; this often includes accident and burns victims and children with less common illnesses and diseases. Our aim is to ‘fill the gaps’ and provide free personalised emotional and practical support for sick children and their families when facing a traumatic experience relating to any health condition. TLC for Kids has no criteria, no waiting lists, and we help any child with any illness,” said Mansfield. Tickets for the Charity Dinner are now available at www. tlcforkids.org.au/goldcoast for $89 per person. Tickets include a two course meal, drinks on arrival and a fun filled evening with birthday celebrations and entertainment by local band Sex & Chocolate. There will also be raffles and silent auctions held to further raise funds for children in need. A major sponsor of the evening is CUA, Australia’s largest customer-owned financial institution. The Charity Dinner is to be held from 6.30pm-11.30pm on Saturday 3rd September at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Cnr Surfers Paradise Blvd & Hanlan Street, Surfers Paradise. For more details contact TLC for Kids Gold Coast Team Leader Dale Mansfield on 0407725463 or email tlcgoldcoast@ tlcforkids.org.au. Plumbing Tip of the Week Everyone likes a good shower. However showers use more water than most fixtures except washing machines. If your water bill is costly, try fitting a flow restrictor cutting water consumption down considerably without affecting your water pressure too much at all. Don’t forget to take advantage of my free solar and electric hot water system check-up. This helpful information was supplied by Jon O’Grady, licensed plumber, at Valley Gutter Cleaning. Mudgeeraba resident Angela Barac has taken on the role of Press Operations Officer, joining the team that will support the estimated 3,500 journalists and photographers covering the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. By the time of the 4-15 April 2018 Games, over 1400 people will be employed by the organisation. Angela has worked in various roles at international events. “I’ve worked on the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and the London 2012 Olympic Games where I worked closely with official sponsors and suppliers and liaised with organising committees and local vendors to ensure the most memorable experience was had by all our Olympic guests,” she said. GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters welcomed Angela and the other new starters and said the GOLDOC recruitment drive is gaining momentum. “Over the coming months, there will be jobs that will need to be filled across almost all of our 42 areas of operation,” Mr Peters said. “They include positions in such diverse areas as catering, administration, events, accommodation, medical, technology and transport, just to name a few,” he said. People wanting details on employment within GOLDOC can visit seek. com.au and are urged to keep any eye on gc2018.com and GC2018 social media. Salvos Take Blanket Approach to Tackling Homelessness A winter blanket appeal across the Gold Coast and Tweed will see local funeral homes donate a new blanket to match every blanket donated by a member of the public. The drive was launched by Invocare through their funeral home brands, Somerwille Funerals and Metropolitan Funerals, together with The Salvation Army. Fundraising & Public Relations Manager for The Salvation Army (Gold Coast & Northern Rivers) Mr Rowan Johnstone said that blankets are needed at Salvos Connect Centres, Gold Coast Accommodation Service and Gold Coast Recovery Services and at the annual Gold Coast Homeless Connect event. “Throughout Qld, NSW and the ACT each night 2,500 clients of The Salvation Army are www.fridayflyer.com.au accommodated in crisis, traditional housing, long term or resident-funded services. Each week over 4,500 people are provided with a bed.” Johnstone also said the number of children and youth facing homelessness is very high, and on the rise. The Salvation Army will be involved in Homeless Connect at Metricon Stadium on August 3. This event brings together service providers from the government and community sector to provide homeless people with a day that includes recreation, entertainment, personal care and access to a range of support services. There is also an area of donation goods and breakfast, morning tea and lunch is served. “The Salvos provide the blankets and work with other members of the Gold Coast Homelessness Network to make this day happen,” Mr Johnstone said. Tweed Museum Open Saturdays The Tweed Regional Museum in Murwillumbah will now be opened every Saturday, following feedback received from the community. Director Community and Natural Resources Tracey Stinson said visitors and the community wanted the museum needed to open more regularly, particularly given its location in the Murwillumbah town centre. “When the redeveloped Museum at Murwillumbah opened in September 2014, we experimented with opening hours to see when people preferred to visit, knowing our capacity to open every weekend was very limited,” Ms Stinson said. “We’ve opened on the first Saturday of each month since the end of 2014, and from Tuesday to Friday each week. However, the community want more and we’re delivering through opening our doors each Saturday,” she said. To mark the occasion, Museum Director, Judy Kean, said there was a Museum packed program during July. “We’re opening two new exhibitions: What’s New 3, and Fit for a Queen: Clair’s Story,” Ms Kean said. The museum will also host six talks during the month of July. Entry to the Museum and all GOLD COAST talks are free. HEALTH & BEAUTY NEWS Shanti’s Thought for the Week Many people live their lives desperately seeking to draw attention to themselves, to be noticed, accepted, and adored, as if they were in the centre of a ring, and as if the world should sit around applauding their every move. But there are a small number of people in this world who live their lives to make others smile, to remind others of the magic and hope in the world, to help them discover the possibilities that live within them. Whenever people like this end up in the spotlight, they use their moment to help others through the dark. These people are the miracle workers. With unlimited blessings, Shantiji. Ph: 55310511 www.shantiyoga.com Is Stress Giving You Wrinkles? Have you been more on edge than usual lately? If you answered YES to this query, you might be experiencing the gnarly toll that stress can take on your looks. We’ve all heard that anxiety and tension play key roles in the progression of life threatening internal diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes, but now’s the time to learn about what happens to the things we can see on the outside. A 2001 study conducted at the University of California revealed that when cells are exposed to chronic stress they age more quickly. And, of course, cellular aging is what makes skin less elastic and supple thus leading to premature sagging and wrinkling. When you’re stressed, your brain releases neuro peptides, the free radicals that can damage your cell membranes. If you put pin pricks into a grape’s skin, the water will seep out. Those radicals are essentially the pricks to our skin; once they’re released they damage the cell membranes so that they lose water. This water loss or dehydration leads to “fine lines and wrinkles, a sallow tone and maybe even some dark circles around your eyes because it also affects circulation.” Hydration is so important for your skin and your therapist can personalise a plan to help your skin return to a healthier, plump, glowing state. Not Just a Pretty Plant Indoor plants are on trend right now as they are great for adding a splash of greenery and embellishing interior spaces. But plants bring a lot more benefit than just aethestics. They have the ability to clean the air we breathe and improve our physical and mental wellbeing. Plants can keep respiratory distresses at bay and decrease the incidence of dry skin and coughs because they release up to 97% of the water they take in, thereby humidifying the air. To make the most of this benefit, try placing several plants next to each other. Succulents and orchids are great for placing in the bedroom, because during the night they refresh the air by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen (the opposite to humans and most other plants). Plants in general have also been found to remove toxins from the air and improve mental wellbeing. To improve health and reduce fatige and stress it is recommended that a 20cm diameter pot every 12 square meters. To purify the air, use 15 to 18 plants in 15 to 20cm pots for every 9 square meters. Get Moving for Better Health Just move. That’s the advice of a lot of experts right now. Sure you can put on the lycra and join a boot camp if you’re up for it, but any movement is better than none. Playing with the kids, mowing the lawn, standing during the ad breaks, gardening- you don’t have to sweat bullets. Anything that gets you moving, makes you breathe a bit quicker and gets your heart beating faster is physical activity. Physical activity not only burns excess kilojoules, it reduces stress, protects you against all sorts of ailments and helps you sleep better. Of course, the more active you are the more you will benefit. Source: healthier.qld.gov.au. A one percent difference may not sound like a lot but it can be significant enough to buy you a holiday, pay off your car or- in the long term- save a down payment on an investment property. Generally, for every $100,000 on a home loan, you save $1,000 per 1% of interest rate. This can equate to around a $4,000 saving per year. Interest rates in Australia are at an historic low. This may mean that if you haven’t reviewed your home loan in the last few years, you may be paying more than you need to. Banks aren’t in the habit of reaching out to customers to give them a better rate, it only happens through pressure. Getting a good interest rate is all about negotiation with banks and knowing what is happening in the market. Reviewing your home loan in the current market can save you money. This helpful information is provided by Alex Warren from www. mangomoney.com.au. If there was a magic pill that could grant us a couple extra hours per day the next sentence out of our mouth would be ‘where’s the water?’ ‘Busy’ would have to be the most commonly used word in any form of small talk today. Barry walks up to Sally, ‘So how have you been?’‘Yeah, BUSY!’ and so goes the same conversation from the coffee shop to the office and anywhere in between. In the business world decision makers are becoming increasingly ‘time poor’. They too are busy but on a larger scale. There is no white space on their iPhone calendar; back to back meetings, scheduled appointments, conference calls here and there. With the addition of technology, apps, and automation you would think that ‘free time’ would be in abundance but you know as well as I do that it’s simply not true. It is in fact creating an opposite effect, whereby we are simply using technology as an aid to cram more things into our days. So what does that mean for us in business during the 21st century? It’s this: SPEED is the new currency of success! How fast you can move in the market place, how fast you send the right proposal, how fast you follow up, how fast you can add tremendous value and how fast you make the process simple for your potential client will either leave you with great success or miserable failure. So move fast today, take on your liquid form, and be the first to the market place! This information is provided by Steve Claydon, the Amazon #1 Best Selling Author of the ‘Diary of a S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Driven Kid’, Professional Speaker, and Entrepreneur. If People Pay, They Pay Attention There are many business owners- particularly those just at the start of their journey- who tend to have an aversion to actually selling their product or service. The result from the start is drastic discounting of prices, or even a complete scrapping of the ‘price’ investment altogether. And it is at this stage that the business owner must learn- for both their own sake and the sake of their buyer- that without a financial commitment the entire value equation goes out the window. In order to value something, people must pay for it. How many times have you downloaded a free e-book and never read it?
