Pulic Meeting Scheduled as Questions Swirl Around Gay Center Sale
By Phil LaPadula
Managing Editor
As the controversy surrounding the sale
of the gay community center in Fort
Lauderdale intensified last week, the center’s
board of directors scheduled a public meeting
for Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. to answer
questions and respond to criticism.
In response to an e-mail flyer sent out
by Doug White, an opponent of the sale,
dozens of people packed the meeting room
where the center’s board was holding its
regularly scheduled meeting Jan. 15. They
were told to come back on Jan. 22 for the
town hall meeting.
A week earlier, Executive director Bill
Peters had announced that the public
meeting on the sale would not be held until
March. “We’ve upped the date because
there seems to be a swell of curiosity,” he
explained.
Meanwhile, the Broward County
Commission voted on Tuesday, Jan. 20, to
table a proposed $200,000 bailout grant for
the center after they learned about the sale.
The commission had been expected to
approve the grant. Peters said he was
disappointed by the commission’s actions
because the center still needs the money for
its programs. He pointed out that the center
will probably not get any money from the
sale until September.
Most of the criticism of the deal has
centered on the board acting without
informing, or receiving input, from the
center’s members and the community at large.
Critics have also questioned why the board
didn’t do a national search for a developer or
put the property on the multiple listing
service. Supporters of the deal say they had
to act quickly to keep the center’s doors open.
“We are angry, and feel betrayed, that
this board met in closed session for months

support from our Founders Circle [major donors], our
membership, our community leaders and community members
prior to voting to sell our community center,” said Doug
White, president of the South Florida Social Circle.
White also questioned why Peters has been telling
the press that the sale was not a done deal when the
board actually signed a sales contract in December. In an
interview with The Express on Jan. 14, Peters
acknowledged that the center had signed a contract, and
it cannot back out. But he said Tarragon Realty Investors
Inc. could still back out, and the deal is contingent on the
city approving the building permits. Nevertheless, White
and others think Peters statements to the press were
misleading.
Dave Litty, one of two board members who voted against
the sale, criticized the way the deal has been handled. “I
think the board has blown it by not allowing the community
to participate in this huge decision,” Litty said. “I’m not against
developing the property as long as it’s well thought out.”
Litty also criticized how center officials have presented
the sale to the media. “I question our representation in the
press by spokespeople for the center,” he said.
Mark Ketchum, president of the center’s board of
directors, said he “can understand the criticism” about
proceeding with the deal behind closed doors. “In a perfect
world, it would have been done in the open,” he said. But he
said the development made the deal contingent on
confidentiality, and the deal seemed to good to pass up.
“This developer came to us and said they wanted to
purchase our property, but it had to be absolutely confidential,
and we couldn’t shop it,” Ketchum explained. “Most of us
were uncomfortable with that, but it was such an opportunity
for us to have a mortgage-free, repair-free building with
working air conditioning and no leaky roof. The only real
costs are going to be maintenance of the building.”
Asked why the center didn’t list the property or do a
national search for a developer, Ketchum said, “It would have
been nice to have enough resources in the bank to say, ‘OK,
we’re going to put ourselves on the market for a year and see
what happens.’ But we saw this as an opportunity to ensure
the future of the center and to keep it alive.”
Ketchum also noted that the developer agreed on Jan.
13 to increase the parking to 70 spaces. Critics complained
that the original plan for 46 spaces, compared with the current
center’s 100-plus spaces, was a major drawback.
Dave Brown, a member of the center who worked for 11
years as an appraiser for Re/Max, said he appraised the
building at $3 million to $3.2 million. The board has
acknowledged that the total sales contract is for $2.19 million.
“Why was it sold so cheaply? Why wasn’t it put on the
multiple listing service?” Brown asked. “It’s a large piece of
land, and it’s very close to Wilton Manors. Why was it a
backroom deal?”
Litty explained that the board had received a written
appraisal of $2.053 million, but he conceded that “the potential
market value is more than $3 million.”
After the meeting Jan. 15, Carol Moran, a former board
member who supports the sale, responded to criticism from
White about the deal’s plan for the center to own a new
10,000-square-foot building but not the land it sits on. In his
e-mail, White had compared the plan to “owning a trailer in a
trailer park.” “Have you ever owned a condo? It’s the same
concept,” Moran said.
But Litty pointed out that the plan could put the center
at the mercy of a condo association. “The condo association
could decide that they don’t want the center or its uses or
events,” he said.
Peters said the board had informed some of its major
donors before signing the contract. “There were certain
things we could not go public with as part of the deal,” he
said. “We needed to respond to this situation as quickly as
possible. We wanted to keep the doors of the center open.”
Peters said the center still needs the $200,000 in
emergency funds from the county “to help develop our
programs for youth, health and education outreach and to
continue operating our 16-hour-per-day emergency hotline
service.”
Karen Kelly, a past president of the center who closed
the sale on the current building, voiced support for the sale.
“We have the opportunity to make a 10,000-square-foot, stateof-the-art facility with no mortgage,” Kelly said. “That’s a
major fund-raising relief right there. Fund-raising is a constant
problem.”
Kelly urged community members “not to jump to any
judgment or opinion based on a flier or an e-mail that’s going
around.” “The board here and the staff work day and night
to make this a successful center, and we owe them the
opportunity to tell us what’s going on.”
But Michael Albetta, a Founders Circle member and
president of the Dolphin Democrats, criticized the board for
not informing the community about what’s going on with the
sale. “I’m very concerned about the fact that people were
misinformed about the sale of the property, and it wasn’t
done in a very appropriate way,” Albetta said. “The people
who are members of the Founders Circle, and the people who
meet here and use the center in various groups, were not
very well informed.”
Elvira Williams, a friend of the late Dr. John Graves who
accepted a humanitarian award in his name last November,
said she was concerned about the future of the Stonewall
Library, a project that Graves passionately supported and
funded. “Whatever happens, Dr. Graves’s library should
remain with the center,” Williams said.
Graves has bequeathed money to the center, but Litty
suggested that the money “could be in jeopardy” because
Graves did not want the property sold.

report.

receiving input from the community.

Margaret Hostetter to Run for Congress
Republican Foe of Gay Rights Seeks Deutsch’s Seat
By Dan Aiello
Local Correspondent
Margaret Hostetter, an outspoken
opponent of gay rights in Broward County,
filed a petition on Jan. 7 to enter the race for
the U.S. House of Representatives, District
20 seat. The seat will be vacated by
Congressman Peter Deutsch (D), who has
entered a race for the U.S. Senate.
Hostetter, a Republican, faces an uphill
battle in a district where Democrats
outnumber Republican voters. Democratic
state Sen. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a longtime friend of the GLBT community, also has
entered the race for Deutsch’s seat in
Congress.
Hostetter did not return two phone calls
from The Express seeking her comments on
the race.
“I think it should be remembered, and
not just by gay and lesbian voters but by
every voter in that District, that Margaret
was the one who began a petition drive to
repeal the Broward County Human Rights
Ordinance,” said Democratic Party activist
Bill Rettinger. “I have faith that the voters
will not be sending a one-issue candidate to
Congress, especially such a divisive
candidate as Margaret Hostetter.”
A spokesman for the local Log Cabin
Republicans said the gay GOP group is not
enamored with Hostettter either. “Margaret
Hostetter did not believe what we stood for
was in line with the platform of the Republican
Party, in terms of social issues,” said Andy
Eddy of the Broward County Log Cabin
4
Republicans. “We have to look at other
Republican candidates. She supported people
in the Republican Party that wanted to rescind
our charter of membership. And when you are
dealing with somebody who wants your
membership rescinded, it is very difficult to
support him or her. She can be very pleasant,
like any other person. But the proof is in the
pudding. If she or any of her friends are
campaigning to have the Log Cabin
Republicans removed from the party, then we
would have to take action to prevent that.”
In a 2002 article in New Times, Bob
Norman dubbed Hostetter “Broward
County’s Church Lady.” Norman recounts
when Hostetter approached him at a recent
public forum on outing and told him that she
approved of his recent article about
Congressman Mark Foley’s alleged
homosexuality. In the article, Norman says
Hostetter told him that she approved of
outing Foley because “we need to identify
homosexuals in public office and expose them
for what they are.”
Hostetter also sought to undo the
relationship between the Broward County
Schools and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight
Education Network, as reported by The
Express in December 2002. In her first
meeting as a member of the school board’s
Diversity Committee, Hostetter charged that
“sexual orientation is not included in the
definition of diversity for this committee” and
its inclusion in the non-discrimination policy
doesn’t give the school board the authority
to enact proactive programs that advocate

acceptance and tolerance of gay people.
Hostetter’s efforts failed to repeal the
Broward County Human Rights Ordinance
or to remove the GLSEN tolerance programs
from Broward County schools.
Wasserman Schultz, who is seeking the
Democratic nomination for the District 20
seat, contrasted her views with those of
Hostetter. “We have very, very polar opposite
views on the issues important to the people
in Broward County in general, but to the gay
community in particular,” said Wasserman
Schultz. “We have opposite views on issues
of discrimination, a woman’s right to choose
and on any of the range of progressive issues
people care about. As far as her candidacy, it
will be very clear by the end of the election
the difference between Debbie Wasserman
Schultz and Margaret Hostetter, and the
voters will have a clear choice.”
Wasserman Schultz campaigned for the
Broward County Human Rights Ordinance,
and was very supportive of it. She promised
to be at the forefront on equal rights issues
and to stand firm against those who advocate
discrimination.
THOM RACINA from Back Page
with the publication of The Happy Hustler.
“I got to the point with a New York
publisher that even though I was writing
porn, they knew I was good. And I got a
chance to write the Great Los Angeles
Blizzard. It was actually that book that got
me to the producers of General Hospital.”
Racina says he had no problems as an
openly gay man working on the soap operas.
In fact, he estimated that at least 50 percent
of the guys he worked with were gay. “I think
the gay men who worked on those show,
and still work on those shows, are really able
to write sensitive love stories and
understand the minds of women better than
a lot of straight men I worked with,” he says.
Racina drew on the daily traumas of his
own life for story material. “So much of my
life was put into those stories, but, of course,
it couldn’t be gay,” he says. For example, he
recalled writing the Bo and Hope love story
for Days of Our Lives, which culminated in
the couple’s wedding in 1984.
“It was push and pull; they’d get
together and then something would
happen,” he says. “You know, you always
try to keep people apart because it’s much
more interesting. Every Monday, we’d
have a story meeting about what was
coming up in the next two weeks. My
producer would look at me and say, ‘OK,
Thom, what happened with Brian this
weekend. And I would tell him the
miserable story of my life with Brian, whom
I was in love with and dating at the time.
And we just simply used all the angst of
my dating Brian for Bo and Hope.”
While working at the soap Another
World, Racina befriended a young, aspiring
actor named Brad Pitt, who lived with him
for a while. “I needed an assistant, so I gave
him a job,” Racina recalls. “He had just quit
college and was new to L.A.”
Racina thought Pitt was a good actor,
so he put him on Another World for one
day. He urged the producers to sign Pitt
to a two-year contract, but they decided
to pass on him. “One of them said he
couldn’t act; one said he had bad skin,”
Racina says. “Had they liked him, he might
have been a soap opera star forever and
never have done Thelma and Louise. But
it got him a Screen Actors Guild card, which
got him other auditions.”
Racina says he talked Pitt out of doing
porn. “He was thinking about taking a porn
job for the money,” Racina says. “I really
thought he was a good actor, and I didn’t
want him to go that route. The next day, he
came back to me and said, ‘I thought about
it, and you’re right, I’m not going to do it.
Besides, my dick’s not big enough.’ I said,
‘Brad, it’s all done with camera angles
anyway. You wouldn’t have to worry.’”
While Pitt’s star rose, Another World
spun off into oblivion two years ago—
one of several soaps canceled in recent
years. “It’s very different today—soaps
are dying,” Racina says. “The viewership
is way down. People have so many other
choices available to them on television
today that the soaps are less appealing.”
He says the problem is not that the soaps
are avoiding risky storylines. “Some of
them have gone way over the edge, which
has turned a lot of people off,” he says.
But he expects soaps geared to
specific audiences, such as Queer as
Folk, to continue to thrive. “Queer as
Folk is directed toward gay men and, of
course, its biggest audience is straight
women,” he says. “Many times when I’ve
watched Queer as Folk, I think, ‘Oh damn,
I should have written that.’”

The Grove Offers Affordable Units in Manors
Officials Gather for Groundbreaking of New Development at Five Points
By Andy Zeffer
Features Editor
A crowd that included Mayor Jim Stork and
other city officials gathered Monday morning,
Jan. 12, at 2660 NE 8th Street in Wilton Manors.
Wearing white construction hats and holding
shovels, the group posed for pictures for the
groundbreaking of The Grove, a new
development of condominiums just up the street
from Five Points intersection.
Along with high-profile developments such
as Wilton Station, The Grove represents the
dramatic facelift that is changing the island city.
And like Wilton Station, which is being heavily
marketed to gays and lesbians with two-page
ads in national publications such as Genre and
Out, the sales group behind The Grove has
already sold 70 percent of the units by targeting
the gay and lesbian community.
“Because this is Wilton Manors, we started
with the community that we are in,” said Cory
Matthews of The Schecher Group, the realtors
representing The Grove. “So I had a booth at
the Stonewall [Festival] event. Word of mouth
spread, and people told their friends out of state,
and interest just skyrocketed. I also placed
brochures in Georgie’s Alibi, which garnered a
great response. Through those avenues, we
have been able to get 70 percent of the units
sold, and have yet to start to advertise.”
Within walking distance of Wilton Drive,
The Grove is a gated community with a
clubhouse, pool and designer kitchens. The
complex also allows pets.
Matthews expects a mixture of owners
who live in their units as well as investors.

Harold Horn, Kenny Hale, Glen Schecher, Purvin Pujara, Mayor Jim Stork and
Vice Mayor Scott Newton break ground at the site of The Grove.
The units at The Grove originally started at
$117,000, but have now moved up to $150,000.
With virtually all the new developments in the
neighborhood starting at $350,000, people who
purchase new condos to rent would have to
charge exorbitant amounts of rent to cover
their mortgage payments. So Matthews sees
the units at The Grove as affordable for first–
time buyers as well as renters.
www.ExpressGayNews.com • January 19, 2004
“We are looking at having
construction finished in nine to 12 months,
but depending on construction that could
be shorter or longer,” Matthews said.
The site of the new development has
a grim history. According to Harold Horne,
community services director for the city of
Wilton Manors, the land where The Grove
will be built was not originally part of Wilton
Manors; it was annexed to the city in 1964.
The apartments that have occupied the
land for years were built at a density of 40
units an acre.
“It was terribly crowded,” Horne said.
“When I first came to work for the city, this
was one of my target properties to do
something about. We had over $10,000 a
day in fines against the original property
owner. He never went above improving to
the minimum requirements. So the property
laid in a stagnant mode. When it was
purchased by the Coastal people, the units
were being rented out at $110 a week.”
Horne describes the apartment
buildings that occupied the land as
having too much density, no place for
dumpsters, no landscaping and no place
for kids to play. The city tried to help by
having mobile units that worked out of
vans for after-school programs for the
children that resided in the units, but the
efforts didn’t work well because the
complex was so transient.
“We are going through a period where
we are losing the kind of people we wanted
to help, where everything being built was
going for $300,000 to $350,000,” Horne said.
“So we started looking at ways to maintain
a variety of housing types. The median cost
of new housing in Broward County is
$160,000; these units start at $117,000. The
median in Wilton Manors is $350,000.”
Asked how he feels about out-of-state
residents being able to afford new housing
while many local residents are being priced
out, Horne said it is not a phenomenon that
is new to South Florida.
“Most of our developments will happen
within walking distance of Wilton Drive.”
Horne said. “And I think we are going to
have people who will want to come here and
pop in for a weekend and check out all the
activities on Wilton Drive. It will be similar
to people who keep a place in Cape Cod or
the Keys. I just think that is inherent to
South Florida.”
However, Horne pointed out that Wilton
Manors still has very solid single-family
homes, and he expects them to remain. He
noted that while the single-family homes may
be individually renovated, unlike some
communities, they are not being torn down
and replaced by larger homes. Instead, he
thinks residents in Wilton Manors will keep
1950s and ’60s housing, homes that were
designed to catch the eastern breeze from the
ocean. Horne said it is all in keeping with the
context of remaining “the Island City.”
“You’ll never see high-rises in Wilton
Manors,” Horne said.
Wilton Manors’ design standards require
units to have porches and face outward, as
opposed to heavy garage doors. Horne said
most of the city’s redevelopment will occur in
the neighborhood where The Grove is being
built, sites that were formally trailer parks, and
a few industrial areas that have remained
underdeveloped.
“Essentially what we were going for is
trying to be consistent with the city’s theme
of being the Island City,” said Purvin Pujara
of Coastal Investment Properties Limited,
the developer behind The Grove. “When
we spoke to Harold Horne, he gave us an
idea of what the city’s theme is. And then
we came up with a concept that fits with
that. So we went with an island-style design

Pujara said that planning The Grove
has been a positive experience. “I find a
more synergistic approach to planning

Cunanan Play Stirs Criticism
La Jolla Playhouse Defends Musical Theatre Piece
By Phil LaPadula
Managing Editor
For the South Florida gay community, the
Andrew Cunanan murder spree was like a
midsummer day’s nightmare. On July 15, 1997,
Cunanan allegedly shot to death popular
openly gay fashion designer Gianni Versace
on the steps of his mansion in the heart of
South Beach’s bustling tourist area.
The Versace killing was the last of five
murders allegedly committed by Cunanan,
whose deadly rampage spanned from San
Diego to South Florida. It ended on July 23,
1997, when Cunanan committed suicide on a
houseboat in Miami Beach after sightings of
the serial killer had been reported in all 50 states.
When La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego
recently announced plans to produce a musical
theatre piece loosely based on Cunanan’s life,
many in the gay community saw it as the
recurrence of a bad dream. But the theatre’s
artistic director, Des McAnuff, insists that they
are not trying to sensationalize or exploit the
tragedy of the Cunanan murders.
McAnuff issued a press release Jan. 6 to
respond to criticism after an article in the San
Diego Union-Tribune and a subsequent letter to
the editor made waves in the community. In
defending the project, McAnuff included excerpts
from the theatre’s application for a grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts.
“The authors intend Disposable to be a
metaphor for the repercussions of a culture
obsessed with money, power and fame,” the
theatre’s press release states. “The creative
10
team of Disposable has an exemplary track
record—they are all significant artists who
have amassed substantial bodies of work and
are each internationally recognized….The
themes that interest Jessica [Hagedorn], Mark
[Bennett] and Michael [Greif] have to do with
race and class, our obsession with celebrity,
wealth and power, as well as the media’s
propensity for sensationalism and its impact
on our perceptions of the truth.”
McAnuff said she hopes the piece will
have the same impact as The Laramie Project,
which the theatre presented in 2001. “That play
also was concerned with a controversial
subject matter—the vicious murder of
Matthew Shepard, slain by two young men
because of his sexuality,” McAnuff said.
Joe Frescatore, who was casually
acquainted with Andrew Cunanan, was
skeptical about the project. “If they’re trying
to make it out like this is what the culture did to
him, to me it seems like a lot of wasted energy,”
Frescatore told The Express. “It seems like
they would have more useful things to make
plays about.”
Frescatore said he knew Cunanan for
several years, “but it was kind of just a surface
relationship,” he said. “I met him the first night
I arrived in San Francisco. He was just this
gregarious, all-around-the-bar kind of guy. He
just flitted from person to person in the bar.
Everybody knew him. It seemed like every time
we went out, he was there. We used to call him
ubiquitous Andrew.”
Frescatore said he also ran into Cunanan

during visits to San Diego and later after
Frescatore moved there. “I would always see
him in coffee shops, bars, stores,” he said.
“He was always cheerful and happy.”
Frescatore said he had several casual
conversations with Cunanan. “He never
mentioned celebrities to me,” Frescatore said.

and Lesbian Community Center of South

Florida, expressed his feelings about the
Cunanan play, telling the Associated Press,
“Cunanan was sick, and do you celebrate that?
People’s lives were gone, and do you celebrate
that?”
But Sean Ingrim, director of development
for the San Diego gay community center, had a
more wait-and-see reaction. “There’s quite a
bit of conflict about this in San Diego,” said
Ingrim, who was once on staff at La Jolla
Playhouse. “On the other hand, there are often
very difficult topics that are tackled in the
theatre. While the subject matter is challenging
and will bring up a lot of painful memories, I
think it’s important to let the theatrical process
happen.”
Ingrim noted that the playhouse has a
good reputation in the community, and many
of its productions make it to Broadway. “I don’t
think they would create a sensationalistic,
yellow-journalism type piece,” he said. “There
are lots of contrived ways to tell this story. We
have to hope that the story is handled in a
dignified manner.”
At least three books have been written
about Cunanan and his victims: Death at
Every Stop: The True Story of Alleged Gay
Serial Killer Andrew Cunanan, the Man
Accused of Murdering Designer Versace;
Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni
Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt
in U.S. History; and Three Month Fever:
The Andrew Cunanan Story. In addition, a
film, Fashion Victim: The Killing of Gianni
Versace was produced in 2001 and is
currently available on DVD.
The new play’s provocative title, Disposable,
seems intended to invite questions. Based on the
theatre’s description of the piece, the question
that many people are likely to ask—especially
those who knew the handsome young man—is
whether American culture threw away Cunanan,
or whether Cunanan threw away his own life,
along with the lives of five other innocent people.
Virginia Man Pushes Kerry’s Gay Appeal
Daley Says Senator Was Gay Rights Advocate Before it Was Fashionable
By Joe Crea
Correspondent
Long before he became the gay liaison
for Sen. John Kerry’s presidential bid, Tom
Daley knew that Kerry was the candidate he
planned to support. Daley said the
Massachusetts senator has a long track
record of supporting gay rights issues, dating
back to 1985, “long before it was fashionable”
to lend political support to gay rights causes.
“This isn’t just a guy talking about it, he
was doing it before anyone else told him to
do it,” Daley said.
Daley’s journey into presidential politics
came after an extensive background in
business and followed a phone call from a
good friend, Bob Farmer. Farmer, who is gay
and serving as the Kerry campaign’s national
treasurer, asked Daley if he’d be willing to
join the campaign to raise money from gay
and lesbian contributors.
“Bob called me out of the blue one day
and said, ‘John may run, would you be
interested in joining the campaign,’” Daley
said. “Knowing Bob well enough and his
track record, especially his track record on
gay and lesbian issues, I knew this was
important.”
Farmer served as the counsel general to
Bermuda during the Clinton administration.
Daley, 37, said that technically, Farmer was
the first openly gay ambassador, but he was
appointed and did not have to face a
confirmation hearing in Congress.
Daley has faced some ups and downs in
his position as gay liaison to Kerry. In
September, Campbell Spencer — Kerry’s first
gay liaison — left during a campaign shakeup
that resulted in the firing of Kerry’s campaign
manager. Daley said that the Kerry campaign
reduced its gay liaison from full-time to parttime status at the request of Spencer, who
served as President Clinton’s gay liaison and
who still plays an advisory role at the Kerry
campaign.
Daley said that Spencer’s departure had
nothing to do with the firing of Kerry’s
campaign manager, and that the timing was
coincidental.
Daley, who lives in Arlington, Va. and
works as a consultant for Hotels.com, said
he completely backs Kerry’s positions on gay
issues, even his stance opposing gay
marriage. Kerry has said that marriage should
be between one man and one woman but has
endorsed civil unions or domestic
partnerships as an alternative.
“I do agree with John on this issue,”
said Daley, who is a volunteer for the Kerry
campaign. “I’m one of those believers that
substance is more important than the name it
is called and I think a lot of people fall into
that category.”
When asked about Kerry’s response to
his home state’s high court ruling that many
say will legalize gay marriage in
Massachusetts, Daley said Kerry is, “right
there with it.”
“He was curious what my opinion was
and what the impression was of folks out
there,” Daley said. “He was interested in
getting some feedback from his advisers and
the people that this affects. We spent more
than a few minutes on it.”
According to recent polls, former
Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is in a dead heat
with Congressman Dick Gephardt of
Missouri, and Kerry is now in a tight race for
third with North Carolina Sen. John Edwards,
just days before next week’s caucuses. Daley
said that Iowa will be a crucial test for Kerry,
who has dropped form first to third in New
Hampshire, behind Dean and former Gen.
Wesley Clark.
“We have set out to win,” Daley said.
“Kerry’s been in this position before. It’s
reminiscent of when he went against Bill Weld
in [the 1996 race for Senate in]
Massachusetts. John is working harder than
he’s ever worked.”
When asked how Daley sells Kerry to
gay voters — many of whom have flocked to
the campaign of Howard Dean, who signed
historic civil union legislation while governor
of Vermont — Daley acknowledges, “We’re
up against a strong voice” but added that
“Kerry has that, too.”
“We [gay rights issues] are not going to
be another issue on the platform. That was
important to me. I did not want to get
involved in a campaign for the sake of it,”
Daley said.
“Howard Dean has spent a lot of time
courting the gay vote and continues to spend
a lot of time courting the community. That’s
where his base came from. When you think
of Howard Dean, you automatically think of
civil unions. When you think of Kerry, you
think ‘decorated war hero.’ But Kerry
supports many of the same issues and has
the voting record to prove it,” Daley said.
Kerry has a 100 percent pro-gay voting
record, according to the Human Rights
Campaign. Kerry was the original co-sponsor
of the hate crimes bill. In 1985, Kerry
introduced a bill prohibiting discrimination
on the basis of sexual orientation. He also
supports the passage of the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act. Additionally, he has
called for an end to the “Don’t Ask, Don’t
Tell” policy banning gays from serving
openly in the military.
Additionally, Kerry was one of 14
senators — and the only one up for reelection
in 1996 — to oppose the Defense of Marriage
Act, which bans federal recognition of gay
marriages, according to his campaign’s Web
site.
Kerry is also opposed to the Federal
Marriage Amendment that would define
marriage as being between a man and a
woman.
Daley said he did not know whether his
boss would take a leadership role in defeating
the FMA, but said Kerry had pledged to vote
against the measure if it comes up for a vote.

Clark Vows Leadership on Gay, AIDS Issues
Ex-General Says Vets Are ‘Ashamed’ of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
By Lou Chibbaro Jr.
Correspondent
Democratic presidential candidate
Wesley Clark said in an interview this week
that if elected president, he would push for
the passage of a gay civil rights bill and
would order military leaders to “fix” the
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which he
called “discriminatory.”
In a telephone interview last week from
New Hampshire, Clark said voters have been
raising the issue of gay civil rights with him
“at least every other stop” on the campaign
trail and he expressed support for an array of
pro-gay measures pending in Congress.
Clark, a retired general, discussed his
views on gay rights issues and AIDS at a
time when polls show he has emerged as the
closest rival to former Vermont Gov. Howard
Dean, the current front-runner for the
Democratic presidential nomination. Clark’s
gay supporters say Clark is also emerging as
Dean’s strongest rival for the gay vote.
Gay supporters of Dean and other
Democratic presidential contenders say their
candidates have spoken out on gay issues
for years while Clark remained silent. But
Clark’s gay backers say his 38-year career as
a military officer and his status as a Vietnam
War hero give him the best chance to beat
President Bush in the November election and
put him in a unique position to prod Congress
into advancing gay rights measures.
Clark, who grew up in Little Rock, Ark.,
graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point in 1966 as the first in his class. He
studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford
12
University from 1966 to 1968, and entered
the military in 1969, where he served in
Vietnam as a captain.
In February 1970, after suffering multiple
gunshot wounds in an ambush, Clark led his
unit in a counter attack on enemy positions,
holding off Viet Cong fighters until American
reinforcements arrived, according to a
military account. Clark’s action led to his
receiving a Silver Star award.
During the next two decades, Clark
moved up the ranks in a variety of key
positions, earning praise from noted military
leaders, including former generals Alexander
Haig and Colin Powell. Clark served as
Supreme Allied Commander of Europe and
head of NATO forces from 1997 to 2000,
playing a key role in negotiating a peace
settlement in the war in Bosnia and helping
coordinate U.S. and European efforts in the
air war against Serbia in the 1999 Kosovo
conflict.
Military observers say President Clinton
and his Defense Secretary, William Cohen,
boosted Clark’s career by orchestrating his
top appointments, but they removed Clark
from his NATO post in 2000, effectively
ending Clark’s military career, following
heated policy disagreements over Kosovo
and other issues.
Despite these disagreements, key
figures in the Clinton administration
reportedly encouraged Clark to run for
president and are expected to give him strong
backing if he wins the nomination.
Clark served as managing director of a
Little Rock brokerage firm from 2000 to 2002

and headed his own consulting firm, Wesley
K. Clark & Associates, which he used to
become a corporate lobbyist, from 2002 until
he entered the presidential race last year.
During this time, he also served as a
consultant to CNN, providing television
commentary and analysis of the U.S. war in
Iraq.
Lou Chibbaro: The U.S. military policy
of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been
criticized by gay civil rights activists. If you
are elected president, what would you do with
that policy?
Wesley Clark: Well, I’ll call in the United
States military’s uniformed leaders and the
Department of Defense leadership and tell
them that we need to get a policy that
represents America. I don’t want the armed
forces to be the last institution in America
that discriminates against people. I believe
people should have equal rights.
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is not working,
at least that’s all the indications I get, and
furthermore, it’s still discriminatory. So they’ll
have to look at policies elsewhere and find
other ways to do it. I won’t tell them how to
do it. I want them to fix it in a way that’s right
for America.
If there’s a resistance like there was
under the Clinton administration, would you
intervene or just leave it up to the military?
No, you have to lead. You cannot leave
it up to the military people. But it’s up to the
uniformed military to come up and address
the issue, and they’ll have to do it to my
satisfaction.
Do you have any thoughts on why there’s
more resistance to this change here than in
militaries in other places such as Europe,
including Great Britain?
Because it’s been politicized in America.
One party has attempted to exploit this
situation for political advantage.
Do you feel you can remove it from the
political arena?
I think I can.
There has been legislation stalled in
Congress for more than 20 years that seeks
to ban employment discrimination based on
sexual orientation—the Employment NonDiscrimination Act, or ENDA. Do you
support that legislation and, if so, do you
have a plan to shepherd it through
Congress?
I do support that legislation, and if I were
elected, I would have a plan to shepherd it
through and get it through Congress.
The Republican Party platform, as of
four years ago, strongly opposed the
legislation. How would you go about
persuading those who don’t agree with it to
support it?
You have to build coalitions, and you
have to work through issues. It’s just a matter
of leadership and priorities. I think equal
rights is a very high priority in the United
States.
One of the impediments to passing this
has been conservative Christian groups,
such as the Family Research Council, who
have said gay civil rights laws should not be
passed because they would legitimize
homosexuality and threaten family values.
Continued on next page
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark greeting supporters at a recent campaign stop.
What would you say to someone who would
urge you to oppose the bill on those grounds?
I’d say that my administration will
address real family values: jobs, education,
health care, the environment and treating
each person equally.
The Supreme Judicial Court of
Massachusetts has issued a decision that
many believe requires the state of
Massachusetts to legalize same-sex
marriage. What is your position on that
issue?
I believe people should have equality
and full rights under the law, including the
rights to a pension, health insurance, medical
leave, bereavement leave, visitation in
hospitals, survivor benefits, etc.
Do you have a view on whether this
should be part of same-sex marriage?
I think whether it’s called marriage or
not is a separate matter. If the state wants to
call it marriage, the state should vote on that.
If the church wants to call it marriage—or a
synagogue—they should vote on that or
make that decision. But the important point
for me is, legally, people must have equal
and full rights under the law.
Do you have a position on a proposed
constitutional amendment to ban same-sex
marriage?
I’m against that.
Do you think this will be used as a wedge
issue in the presidential campaign?
Of course it probably will be a wedge
issue. We just have to argue against things
like that.

The Whitewashing
of Gay America
Media Ignore the Key Role of GLBT
African-Americans in Rights Struggle
By Deb Price
Something’s been
wrong with the picture of
gay America: It’s been way
too white for way too long.
That distorted image
has
had
damaging
consequences: Seeing so
many
white
faces
accompanying gay stories,
many heterosexual AfricanAmericans understandably
equate being gay with
being white. Sensing
discomfort and disapproval
in their families and
churches, many black gay
men and lesbians stay closeted, both from
those they love dearly and the news media.
Meanwhile, mostly white right-wing
groups have effectively
showcased
well-known
African-Americans
who
oppose gay equality.
The result of all this?
Americans are much more
likely to know that Colin
Powell opposed allowing gays
to serve openly in the military
than to know that supporters
of gay marriage include such
prominent African-Americans

And probably few heterosexuals of any
race realize the key role that gay AfricanAmericans are playing in the legal struggle
for equal rights for those of us who are gay.
Last summer, when the Supreme Court
handed gay Americans our biggest victory
ever, African-American Tyron Garner and
his white partner made history for
successfully challenging their arrest for
private, romantic intimacy.
And as the recent Massachusetts ruling
that marriage licenses must be given to gay
couples beginning next May demonstrated,
black gays are central to the drive to allow
gay couples to marry in this country. That
ruling grew out of a suit filed by seven
couples, two of whom are in black-white
unions. And in New Jersey, a black lesbian
couple is among the couples fighting to wed.
Yet the fact that gay America is every
color rarely gets broadcast. “When 99
percent of the time the image they see about
gay rights is a white face, black heterosexuals
will go, ‘It is not a black issue.’ Yet we who
are black and gay know just how important
being able to marry is to our relationships,”
says North Carolina activist Mandy Carter.
Now, valiantly countering the effort to
drum up support in the black community
to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gay
marriages, a black gay group is working to
improve the picture. The new National
Black Justice Coalition plans to seek allies
in black churches, reach out through the
black media and talk at leading black
conferences to stress how such a ban
would hurt black same-sex families. (Contact:

Letters to the editor
Coretta Scott King and Carol Mosley
Braun are among the prominent AfricanAmerican leaders who have spoken out
in favor of gay marriage.
“When we talk about marriage equality
as a civil rights issue, the African-American
community can be an ally,” says gay AfricanAmerican Keith Boykin, a former aide to
President Clinton and a co-founder of the
Justice Coalition. “It’s a question of framing
the issue.”
Polling illustrates the coalition’s uphill
road: Blacks are more likely than whites to
think sexual orientation “can be changed” (58
percent versus 39 percent in a Pew Research
Center poll in November), and to think gay
sex should be illegal (64 percent versus 48
percent in a December New York Times poll).
On gay marriage, survey results are mixed,
with Pew finding 60 percent of both blacks
and whites opposed, but the Times reported
much more black opposition (75 percent versus
59 percent).
Gary Daffin, co-chair of a leading
Massachusetts gay group, says persuading
fellow black gays to be out in the black
community is central to changing hearts.
“Gay and lesbian people of color have to
show the courage that our ancestors showed
in fighting racism and segregation,” Daffin
says. “What changed history was people
saying, ‘We are going to put our lives on the
line because we don’t want our children to
live like this.’ We don’t want the next
generation of black gay kids to have to hide.”

Secretive Sale Is Not in Best Interests of Community
I would like to take this opportunity to voice my disapproval and dismay
at the decision recently made by the board of directors concerning the
upcoming sale of our community center. I, as well as many of my friends, are
members and very active members of the GLCCSF and yet, we all just recently
learned of the sale, and worse still, were never given the opportunity to voice
our concerns before a decision was made and an agreement with the developer
signed.
Since I was not given the opportunity to give my opinion, let me take this
opportunity to inform you that as it currently stands now, I DO NOT WANT
THIS SALE. I do not think it 1) is in the best interests of the Center, or 2) is in
the best interests of the community. I would like the following questions
answered as soon as possible since time seems to be of the essence:
1) Why was this deal kept a secret from the members? I have been a
board of directors member of two statewide, large organizations for many
years. No board has ever held a meeting in secret or private, away from
members.
2) Why was only one offer considered? If a change of this drastic nature
was in fact in the best interest of the center, certainly more than one offer
should have been considered. I understand that there was at least one other
offer presented to the center for consideration. It was never brought to the
attention of the board. Can you tell me what happened to this offer?
3) How is this deal in the best interest of the center? We will no longer
be able to hold any large functions such as BINGO, the Bizarre Bazaar, the
Antique and Collectable Show, Casino Night, etc., as our main hall will simply
not be large enough to accommodate them. The parking lot (our measly 46
spaces) will not be able to hold the flea market. These events have proven
themselves to be an asset to both the community and the center.
4) Having no kitchen means fewer types of functions can be held. How
can this be a good thing?
5) I would be interested in reviewing the center’s year-end finances.
According to media reports, it seems to me that we are in better shape now
than we have ever been in the past.
I would like a response to this letter from members of the board. For your
convenience and to help expedite your response, please respond to me via email me at [email protected], or alternatively, you may fax your response to my
attention at 954.779.3937.

The Right Wing’s Loveless Embrace of Marriage
Opponents of Gay Unions Cite Every Reason Except Love
Have you noticed how seldom the
defenders of marriage as an exclusive
heterosexual privilege talk about love as a
reason for marrying?
They give a number of reasons why only
heterosexual should be allowed
to marry: the procreation of
children, the preservation of
social stability, the purported
“fit” of the male and female
genitalia. But they never seem to
mention that men and women
might love each other and want
to spend their lives together.
This is odd if you think about
it. Of all the motivations
heterosexuals might have for
marrying, love would seem to be
first and foremost. Is it really
likely that a man might say to a women, “I
notice that our genitals would fit together well.
Would you marry me?” or “Our nation needs
to generate more children. Please be my wife.”
But the defenders of exclusionary
heterosexual marriage dare not mention love
because they know that if they admit for one
moment that one primary reason people marry
is love, then gays and lesbians—who have
as much capacity for love as heterosexuals—
would have just as much claim to marriage as
heterosexuals. And they know most
Americans would realize that.
Not that they came to this point willingly.
During much of the 1990s, religious right
groups such as the Traditional Values
Coalition tried to deny the existence of samesex love. They characterized committed gay
and lesbian couples as “sex partners” or “just
friends who have sex.”
Apparently that was not broadly
persuasive. Perhaps the slowly
growing visibility of gay couples
was a factor, or awareness of the
600,000 same-sex couples
acknowledged in the 2000
census. In any case, that tactic
was largely abandoned.
So gay marriage opponents
have been forced to retreat to
curiously
strained
or
insubstantial reasons based on
human physiology (“natural fit”)
or so-called “social policy” (e.g.,
the need for babies, two-parent
families, etc.).
Consider the argument that we need
heterosexual-only marriage in order to
be sure the nation and/or the human
race will survive. In fact, heterosexuals
are creating babies at a high rate. In
1950, the U.S. population was 150
million. By 2000, the U.S. population was
280 million.
So the problem is not one of inducing
heterosexuals to marry so there will be more
children. They are having plenty of children.
The problem is that heterosexuals are having
children without marriage. In 1990, 26.6
percent of babies were born to unmarried
women. By 2000, 33.2 percent were born to
unmarried women. So the task is inducing
heterosexuals who have children to marry.
Religious right advocates say allowing
gay marriage would separate the concepts of
marriage and child-rearing. You can be sure
that if gay couples had been able to marry
during the 1990s, religious right polemicists
would have blamed the rising birthrates
among single women on gay marriage. But it
is clear that many heterosexuals already
separate marriage and child-rearing.
So the religious right argument amounts
to this: Because heterosexuals are producing
children without marrying, therefore
homosexuals should not be permitted to
marry. Another way to put that is: Because
many heterosexuals who produce children
do not love each other enough to marry,
therefore we should not permit same-sex
couples who love each other to marry.
The core question then is: What
does prohibiting loving gay couples
from marrying do to increase the
likelihood that unmarried heterosexual
procreators will feel enough love for
each other so they will want to marry?
How exactly might that work?
But if gay marriage opponents fall
back on illogical arguments against gay
marriage, they also conspicuously avoid
mention of ways in which gay married
couples can be a social good and help
solve the very problems they claim to be
concerned about.
Single parents, usually women, face
real challenges. Researchers have found
substantial social problems associated
with single parenting: higher crime rates,
drug abuse, lower educational attainments,
chronic poverty. Many single mothers are
unwilling or unable to care for their
children, so the children are put up for
adoption or foster care.
But if the problem is heterosexual
procreators who do not marry, one obvious
solution is adoption by married gay and
lesbian couples. In most states, gays can
already adopt and provide foster care for
children. By marrying, gay couples would
be able to provide evidence of their love for
each other, commitment to the concept of
family and greater assurance of a stable and
loving home life for children than an
unmarried parent can.
Because the arguments against gay
marriage are so poor but advanced so
fervently, we might wonder if gay marriage
opponents are arguing in good faith. That is,
are they using arguments they find
convincing, or ones they may not themselves
believe but hope will convince others. If the
latter, then they must be reluctant to submit
their actual reasons for opposing gay marriage
to public scrutiny.

Right Wing Likely to Exploit Dean’s ‘Gay Grassroots’
But Punits May Be Underestimating the Former Governor’s Broad Appeal
Whoever among the current contenders
becomes the Democratic presidential candidate
will most certainly be portrayed by Republican
operatives, conservative pundits and religious
zealots as hailing from Sodom and/or
Gomorrah. That’s true even if the candidate is
orthodox and pious Joe
Lieberman, who supports antidiscrimination laws and hatecrimes legislation for gays and
lesbians, and thus is light years
away from George W. Bush on
gay rights. (The president, let’s
not forget, is still on record as
supporting sodomy laws.)
But now that The
Washington Post has shown how
Dean’s base of support grew from
the gay community outward, the
Vermont governor, should he get the
nomination, is going to be targeted by
fundamentalists even more than previously
imagined. These attacks, we can be sure, will
then be quietly exploited by Karl Rove.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing this
time around. I’ve maintained that the push for
a federal marriage amendment in the wake of
the Massachusetts decision could hurt Bush
more than the Democrats, as the issue
continues to split the Republican Party and
conservative pundits. (And, yes, I still believe
this, despite a recent New York Times poll—
criticized even by the Times’ own ombudsman
editor Daniel Okrent last Sunday—that
contradicted every other poll, claiming that the
majority of Americans would favor an
amendment.) Dean himself seems to agree,
18
noting on his Web site that he “can’t wait to
ask the President of the United States… to
repudiate the GOP-authored Defense of
Marriage Act [which was signed into law by
Bill Clinton in 1996], an unconstitutional, meanspirited law that stoked fears of homosexuality.”
“Former Vermont Gov.
Howard Dean’s record-setting
fund-raising first took off in large
part because of an outpouring of
support from the gay community,”
wrote Thomas Edsall in the Post
last week. He went on to note that
some Democratic fund-raisers
estimate that “at least” 10 percent
of the money now coming into the
party and its presidential nominees
is from gays and lesbians. (Gays
accounted for 4 percent of the
overall 2000 presidential electorate, the
equivalent of the Jewish vote.)
“With just one exception,” the article
continued, “every fund-raiser Dean attended
outside Vermont in 2002 was organized by gay
men and lesbians, as were more than half of the
events in the first quarter of 2003, according to
Dean advisers.… This early backing provided
a foundation for Dean to expand his core
support to include voters opposed to the Iraq
war, angry at President Bush, embittered by the
outcome of the 2000 election and discontented
with what they saw as a Democratic Party
establishment without backbone.”
Though he has a 100 percent scorecard
from the NRA and a moderate to conservative
record on some other issues, Dean has been
portrayed as a staunch liberal in part for being
www.ExpressGayNews.com • January 19, 2004
the first governor to sign a civil unions law for
gays. Articles like the one in the Post are only
going to put more pressure on Bush to call for
sending homosexuals to the depths of hell. No
doubt Pat Robertson, who last week said that
God told him that W. is “blessed” and destined
to win, will eventually announce that Dean is
the antichrist.
The reasons for Dean’s huge support
among gays and lesbians—one survey
showed him having a 33 percent lead among
gays over his opponents—are more
complicated than they appear. And unpacking
them is instructive in understanding Dean’s
appeal across a broad swath of voters, as well
as why the pundits and the pollsters continue
to underestimate him.
Dean enjoys wide support among gays
even though he is opposed to same-sex
marriage, while some of the other Democratic
candidates—Carol Mosley Braun, Al Sharpton
and Dennis Kucinich—support marriage
rights for gays. Some gay activists have even
chided Dean for taking credit in leading the
way on civil unions, when, in fact, he was just
following through on a state supreme court
decision to give gay couples equal rights and
later declined to back same-sex marriage. Most
activists see his stance as inadequate and have
no intention of settling for civil unions.
Gay voters, in the end, are rather
pragmatic and moderate. Republicans are
mistaken to interpret support by gays as
evidence that Dean is a far-left candidate
bolstered by radical elements in the
Democratic Party, or that he can’t beat
Bush in a general election. (A recent cover
of the National Review depicts a photo of
an angry Dean with the headline, “Please
Nominate This Man.”)
In the 2000 primary in California, for
example, gays and lesbians voted for Bill
Bradley in only slightly higher numbers than
the rest of Democratic voters, this despite
Bradley’s startling, bold promise to change
the 1964 Civil Rights Amendment to include
gays, as well as his early support of
domestic partnerships, which Gore backed
only after Bradley’s announcement.
Dean’s popularity among gays and
lesbians has less to do with his support for
civil unions and gay rights than it does with
the simple fact that a majority of Democratic
voters in national polls support him: He’s
giving Bush a good, swift kick in the butt
on a variety of issues, from the war to the
economy—something few of the other
viable candidates have done with passion.
The latest CNN poll has Bush beating
Kerry, 54-43 percent, but only beating Dean
51-46, meaning that some people who
favored Bush against Kerry switched when
Dean is put up against Bush. The idea that
even a small percentage of people who
would vote for Bush might move over to
Dean—a candidate portrayed as a leftist
firebrand pushing gay rights—is quite
interesting. It’s something the Bushies
might think about before stoking
homophobia next November.

Are We Kissing Up to Mainstream America?
Lesbian Chic Is Back, But Some People Have Mixed Feelings About It
This week’s upcoming debut of The L Word,
Showtime’s new Queer As Folk for the lesbian set,
has set off a frenzy of lesbian-centered stories in the
mainstreammedia.Oneofthemoreinterestingshowed
up in The Washington Post. Lesbian chic, it seems, is
back—this time among teenagers.
“You can see this new trend
on Friday nights outside Union
Station, sweethearts from high
schools around the Washington
area, some locking lips . . .” writes
Post staff reporter Laura Sessions
Step. “These girls packAni DiFranco
concerts and know the lyrics by heart.
Their attention is usually directed
exclusively at each other, but not
always: A group of girls at a private
school in Northwest Washington
charge boys $10 to watch the girls make out in
front of them.”
My first response was a sigh and a shake of
the head. After all, charging boys to see girls kiss is
just buying into the idea that lesbians make out to
attract men.
But then I realized that in a way, these
Washington girls were merely doing what Showtime
is doing with The LWord—or what MTV was doing
when it showed the kiss between Madonna and
Britney Spears, or what L.A. Law was doing back in
1992 when it presented television’s first lesbian kiss
(betweenAmanda Donohoe and Michele Green—
remember that one?).
These Washington, D.C. girls are merely
exploring the growing trend of lesbian
commodification. And I’m not sure that’s a bad thing.
Some thoughtful people think it may be. Diane
Anderson-Minshall points out in this month’s Bitch
magazine that lesbian kisses in the media tend to
happen without the context of a relationship; that is,
she writes, “the intention . . . is to titillate while avoiding
trickier questions about sexuality.”
This seems to be exactly what those
Washington girls are doing when they
kiss for payment.
Anderson-Minshall also notes
that this kind of desensitization to
lesbian sexuality might make straight
audiences “forget that we don’t have
the same fundamental protections as
they do in most parts of their lives.”
Maybe—although I tend to
think that desensitization is a good
thing. The more we remove the “ick”
factor from lesbian sexuality, the more
straight Americans will become
comfortable with our existence, and polls show that
comfort and familiarity tend to lead to political
support. (To give Anderson-Minshall credit, she
does quote an expert who says that these kinds of
out-of-context kisses often do have a positive
outcome, it’s just not as radically positive as it might
be within the context of a relationship.)
But what I think is more intriguing is the sexual
fluidity that women are exhibiting more and more in
the mainstream media.
When women kiss each other on television or in
movies, they might be self-identified lesbians, as
hopefully most characters on The L Word will be. But
they also might as easily be two “straight” women or
twobisexualwomenortwowomenwhoare,tousethe
newlexicon,“heteroflexible”or“gayish”orsimplyqueer.
This, I think, reflects a social reality that the
gay and lesbian community—and particularly our
political and social o r g a n i z a t i o n s —have
adulthood is a time for exploration,
and they should feel free to love a
same-sex partner without
assuming that is how they’ll
spend the rest of their lives.”
The Post also reports,
“Recent studies of relationships
among women suggest that
female homosexuality may be
grounded more in social
interaction, may present itself as
an emotional attraction in
addition to or in place of a
physical one, and may change over time. Young
women also appear to be more open to
homosexual relationships than young men are.”
So perhaps lesbians are hip these days (and
therefore more easily commodified) not because
we are an outcast, minority group but because
more and more previously straight women are
starting to realize that actually, they—and their
daughters—are a lot more like us than they had
thought. They understand deep emotional
attachments to other women. They understand
the idea that you might love someone so much
that all you want to do is kiss them. They might
not be part of or understand the lesbian culture
that we treasure, but perhaps that’s not
necessary.
Perhaps all we need to one day win social
equality is a widespread understanding that
lesbians are not that different from straight
women after all.
Diane Anderson-Minshall points
out in this month’s Bitch
magazine that lesbian kisses in
the media tend to happen without
the context of a relationship; that
is, she writes, “the intention . . . is
to titillate while avoiding trickier
questions about sexuality.”
been reluctant to identify. We tend to still press
bisexuals to identify as gay or straight. We want
everyone to have a sharply defined identity
because we believe—and this is probably true—
that numbers are important: the more people we have
in our community who identify themselves as simply
lesbian or gay, the more political power we have.
And right now, political power is vital.
But women in particular seem to have a more
fluid identity than that indicated by the either/or
dichotomy of “lesbian” and “straight.” There are
women who experiment with loving other women
during college; women who are married to men they
love but who have passionate affairs and deep
friendships with other women on the side; women
who come out of marriage into the lesbian community
at 40 or 50 or older; women who have been devoted
lesbians all their lives until, suddenly, they find
themselves unexpectedly in love with a man.
And many younger women have embraced
this more flexible concept of sexual identity
wholeheartedly.
“Try this on, Mr. and Mrs. America,” the Post
says. “These girls say they don’t know what they
are and don’t need to know.Adolescence and young

For the week of 1/19/04
Mars makes a marvelous aspect to Pluto and well placed actions create unparalleled,
earth changing results. We deliver the goods in no uncertain terms. Handle all packages
with care and don’t bend or fold unless requested.
ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Gay Rams are advised to be unapologetic self promoters when Mars trines Pluto.
(As if you needed an excuse....) Your best ideas find their way into cyberspace
where you become more than just another piece of spam. Well perhaps.
TAURUS (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
Queer Bulls are whipped into a sexual frenzy and your potency is at a peak. Make good
use of time before it deflates. There is something otherworldly about your choice of
lovers. I suppose that is to be expected considering where you troll for dates.
GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Pink Twins get hot and bothered about certain relationships. Some pals mean
more to you than you first thought. Don’t be surprised if something platonic
evolves into something passionate. Choose carefully; certain jewels hold greater
luster than others.
CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
Rather than spend your life pushing a pencil in some drab cubicle, Mars and Pluto now
formulate a professional coup d’etat with you as heir apparent. Storm the barricades
and upset the natural order of things. Then push a pencil in the corner office.
LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Travel is exciting and gloriously delicious. So what are you waiting for, proud
Lion? It is time for you to get going and seek new exotic stimuli to get those juices
flowing once again. Replenish and rejuvenate in any way possible. Maui anyone??
.
VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
Queer Virgins find all sorts of fascinating activities to pique their interest around the
house. But don’t pique alone. Plan a gay get together where you show off your culinary
talents. When that fails, show off your other admirable talents. Can we think of any?
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Expect to have a range of fiery conversations with partners. Gay Libras usually
strive for diplomacy but now call it as you see it. This strengthens relationships that
are on track. Wobbly situations may teeter but it is better than tiptoeing through life.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
Apply a little elbow grease on the job and see how profitable it can be. Proud Scorps
are often apt to let day to day assignments fall fallow while they feast at the political
banquet table. Now demonstrate your considerable work skills beyond ass kissing.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Pluto and Mars form an artistic alliance and gay Archers can overcome creative
blockage. But don’t keep all your great ideas to yourself. Pluto in your own sign indicates
transformation and new directions. Be sure to share your booty... I mean bounty.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Your imagination revs into overtime. Pink Caps come up with some fairly
Outrageous ideas. Good! Open your closet and let the wilde spirits run free. Plan
a seance, create a myth and become a muse. At very least just be amusing.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Watch what you say during the potent Mars / Pluto trine. Aqueerians often prefer
to remain on the fringes of the group where they can be aloof and observe and
judge. Now all eyes are upon you. Don’t forget to wear clean underwear.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
The Mars / Pluto trine is a profitable transit for all Guppies who have been swimming
upstream professionally. You possess more power than you realize and are able to fry
some corporate sharks and serve them for lunch. Pack the pepto just in case!

Deadly Games Author Breaks the Rules of ‘Whodunits’
Gay Former Soap Opera Writer to Sign Books at SunServe Fundraiser
By Phil LaPadula
Managing Editor
On Jan. 21, mystery writer Thom Racina
will return to the scene of the crime—the
Flamingo Inn Amongst the Flowers in Fort
Lauderdale. The inn is the setting for a major
part of Racina’s new novel, Deadly Games.
Racina, a long-time soap opera writer and
former roommate of Brad Pitt’s, will speak
and sign copies of his book at the inn as part
of a fund-raiser for SunServe, the social
services agency of the Metropolitan
Community Church’s Sunshine Cathedral.
While most mystery novels rely on sheer
suspense to grab readers, Deadly Games is a
murder mystery with a message. In the book,
computers are used to program teenagers to
kill religious leaders. Racina’s message is about
the evils of killing in the name of God, and
those who “program” others to act on their
fanaticism. But Racina says that the book also
has an uplifting message about the resilience
of personal faith.
“There is a spiritual message, and you
don’t often get to do that in a thriller,” Racina
says. “Seldom do mystery novels deal with
those kinds of topical, timely issues. This
book is still a thriller, a page-turner, but it has
real weight to it.”
Racina explains that a recent trip to the
Middle East was the inspiration behind
