2016 CONVENTION CAR ORDER FORM
Founded in 1829 by German immigrant David G. Yuengling, D. G. Yuengling and Son, Inc. is but one of America’s great
stories of immigrants following their dreams to build a legacy in their new country. Overcoming a devastating fire in 1831, the
brewery moved to its current location in Pottsville, PA, where it has been run ever since by five generations of the Yuengling
family. In 2012, Yuengling Brewery became the largest US-owned brewery in the country. Having celebrated its 184th
birthday in 2015, the Pottsville brewery is the oldest continuously operating brewery in the US. Attendees of our 2016
Convention will have a chance to visit this historic building and sample the great products produced there.
LOTS is proud to offer this highly collectible Standard O Scale double-sheathed boxcar as the Convention car for our 37th
Annual Convention in Philadelphia (Valley Forge), PA. Celebrating the Yuengling story and “can-do” spirit of Pennsylvania’s
many small historic towns, our striking, all Lionel-manufactured car is 11-1/2" long and features opening doors, die-cast sprung
trucks and operating couplers, simulated wood-sheathed exterior, and steam era fishbelly-style underframe with separately
applied metal details. Operating on O-31 and larger curves, this car is sure to be a wonderful addition to your collection and
layout. Order yours today so you don’t miss out!

Tour #1: Independence Hall/Liberty Bell, Reading
Terminal Market, 30th Street Station, City Tavern,
and Valley Forge National Historic Park
Sunday, July 10 ~ Time: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Adults: $75.00, Children: $55.00
The first stop on the first tour being offered during the LOTS
37th Annual Convention takes attendees to Independence
National Historical Park. The park
includes twenty buildings that are
closely associated with the Colonial
period, the founding of the nation and
Philadelphia's early role as the U.S.
capital. During our time in the park,
we'll see the nation's best known
symbol of freedom -- the Liberty Bell -as well as Independence Hall (guided
tour), where the Declaration of
Independence
and
the
U.S.
Constitution were created and signed.
Upon completion of our tour of
Independence Hall, we'll gather for a
short 3½ block walk to City Tavern for lunch. City Tavern was
the location of first Fourth of July Celebration in 1777 and George
Washington's Pre-Inaugural Ball. Today, City Tavern offers a
historic dining experience, complete with Colonial haute cuisine
served on pewter dinnerware by costumed wait staff. Your
choice of grilled salmon, beef turnover, or Ben Franklin's fried tofu
with salad and dessert is included in the price of the tour.
After lunch, we'll re-board our motor coach for a ninety minute
narrated driving tour of Philadelphia's 100 most popular
attractions. Stops will be made at Reading Terminal Market and
30th Street Station for you to browse and take pictures.
Before returning to the hotel, we'll stop at Valley Forge
National Historic Park.
February 2016
Tour #2: Yuengling Brewery Tour, Roadside America,
and Jerry's Classic Cars
Monday, July 11 ~ Time: 7:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Adults: $65.00, Children: $45.00
Join fellow LOTS Members as we travel north (1.5 hours) to
Pottsville, PA to visit America's Oldest Brewery: D.G. Yuengling
& Son, Inc. Attendees will wander through time and enjoy a taste
of living history in a building that has produced fine beers through
time of peace, prosperity, upheaval and world war! We'll even go
underground to see the hand-dug fermentation cave that was
used for storage, before refrigeration. After
observing all facets of the production
process, we'll be treated to samples of the
product Yuengling has been producing for
87 years! NOTE: all attendees MUST wear
closed-toe shoes! Anything open around
your foot is unacceptable! In addition, there are approximately
120 steps while on the tour. The steps are not all in the same
building, and there are breaks along the way, but there are
several steps.
Once everyone has enjoyed a sample of their favorite
Yuengling beer, we'll depart for lunch at a local Italian restaurant
for a buffet-style lunch of salad, chicken parmesan, lemon
chicken, chicken
broccoli in garlic
and oil, and penne
pasta
with
meatballs.
Before leaving
the Pottsville area,
we’ll stop at Jerry's
Classic Cars &
Collectibles
Museum.
Jerry's
features 20,000 collectible items to stir fond memories. You can
even drop a quarter in the jukebox to play your favorite old tune
while browsing.
Then, before
returning to Valley
Forge, we'll stop
in Shartlesville,
PA, at Roadside
America. It’s an
8,000 square foot,
fully landscaped,
all O-gauge train
display. There is
LOTS of detail, and all
buildings are handmade. This “miniature village” was begun in
16
1935, and is still maintained as it was when the owner and
creator, Laurence Gieringer, passed away in 1963.
Tour #3: Simeone Automobile Museum, Nicholas Smith
Trains, Ed Dougherty and Eric Hofberg Home Layouts
Tuesday, July 12 ~ Time: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Adults: $65.00, Children: $50.00
Today’s tour begins with a stop at Nicholas Smith Trains
(established in 1909). If you go to the TCA's York, PA Train Meet
each April and October, I'm sure you've stopped by fellow LOTS
Member Chris Ganz' booth in the Orange Hall. In 2016, you'll
now
have
the
opportunity to visit
his brick-and-mortar
store!
Nicholas
Smith Trains is one
of
the
most
impressive familyowned toy stores in
the area. The store features a wide-ranging inventory of model
trains upstairs, and enough toys to rival any larger chain store
downstairs! Attendees of Tour #3 will receive a 10% discount on
everything in the store!
The next stop on today’s tour takes us to Eric and Peg
Hofberg's home layouts. The Hofberg's upstairs layout is a 9' x
12' Standard gauge
layout with two
loops of trains
running. The walls
are lined with rare
Lionel
and
American
Flyer
trains. Downstairs,
on the Pine Valley
Railroad,
the
Hofbergs
have
created a fantastic
hi-rail layout with American Flyer running on the upper level, and
Lionel and MTH running on the main level. Be sure to check out
the exceptional scenery (lakes, tunnels, bridges and hand painted
murals) during your visit!
After everyone has had ample amount of time to view the
Hofberg's trains, we'll travel to the Simeone Foundation
Automotive Museum, one of the world's greatest collections of
racing sports cars. "The Spirit of Competition," and celebration of
the history and evolution of these magnificent machines, is pretty
spectacular. The collection, assembled over 50 years by Dr.
Frederick Simeone, contains over 65 historically significant cars
including Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Mercedes, Jaguar,
Bentley, Aston Martin, Corvette, Ford, and more! (The collection
even includes a few cars Jay Leno would like to have in one of
February 2016
his garages!) During a recent visit, Mr. Leno drove a 1953
Cunningham that won at Sebring, a 1929 DuPont that ran at Le
Mans, and a rare Cobra Daytona Coupe. We won't be driving
any of the cars during our visit, but we will be eating a boxed
lunch (ham, turkey, Italian, roast beef or vegetarian) surrounded
by these breathtaking racecars!
Prior to returning to Valley Forge, we’ll travel to the home of
Ed and Carolyn Dougherty. Ed is a retired professional golfer.
He has an array of unique, one-of-a-kind items for you to see!
His collection includes just
about every item Lionel ever
made between 1946 and
1969. In addition, he has
original large size Lionel
posters, 40 classic pin ball
machines,
juke
boxes,
guitars, lighted bar-signs, and
golf trophies/awards for us to
admire. The Dougherty's do
not have a train layout per
se; instead, they have the
layouts and displays sold by
Lionel for train dealers. The
most notable layout is the
Storytown USA layout (8’ x
16’), along with other dealer
displays of yesteryear. Be
sure to take note of the bottom
of Ed's golf bag. It reads
"Wanted: Old Lionel Trains!"
On the Wednesday before
each golf tour he would go
train hunting, and during the
tour he made sure his caddy flashed the underside of his bag to
the media! Ed knew his golf career wouldn't last forever, but he
knew his love of toy trains would.
Tour #4: Merchant Square Model Train Exhibit, Mack
Trucks Historical Museum, Caryl Pettijohn and
Phil Klopp Home Layouts
Wednesday, July 13 ~ Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Adults: $55.00, Children: $40.00
Today’s adventure begins with a visit to Caryl Pettijohn's
Hollyberry Farm Train Barn Standard gauge layout. Caryl's
layout is probably the largest
Standard gauge layout in
Pennsylvania, with 2,260 feet of
track and ten different operating
loops
accommodating
23
engines, each complete with
rolling stock. All pieces are
original from 1925-1939. Caryl's
monorail isn't just one set, but
several extra pieces of monorail
track
connected
together
through a mountain! In addition,
the layout features some of the
most pristine, original pre-war
engines and rolling stock that
you will ever see! There's even
a Buddy-L layout traversing the
inside perimeter of the 2,500
square foot barn.
The next stop for today will be to the Merchant Square Model
Train Exhibit, advertised as an Eighth Wonder of the World
Attraction! This massive, 78' x 36' O-gauge scale, O-gauge semiscale, and HO layout features a 24' x 16' lake with scale rainfall,
thunder and lightning, more than 1,000 structures
(scratch built and
commercial), a 60piece
operating
amusement park,
an operating drivein movie theater
(18" monitor), a
large ski area with
20 operating ski
rides and skating
ponds,
30,000
lights, stars, the
moon and several illuminated buildings, all under one roof. Forty
trains (4 underground subways, 5 elevated, 4 under catenary) in
road names such as PRR, Lehigh Valley, Jersey Central,
Reading, New Haven, Amtrak and SEPTA traverse the 18,000
feet of track. Absolutely amazing!! Before leaving Merchant
Square, we'll feast on a box lunch consisting of your choice of
turkey, roast beef, tuna salad, or vegetarian sandwich.
Upon completion of lunch and after one last view of the layout,
we'll depart for the Mack Trucks Historical Museum, a true hidden
gem of the Lehigh Valley. The museum,
established in 1984, covers the entire
exciting history of Mack Trucks from the
beginning to current day. Actual examples of
Mack Trucks from every era and variety are
on display in the former Mack Trucks
Research, Development and Testing Center
near the Allentown Queen City Airport.
Retired local Mack employees will be available to answer any
questions you may have about Mack Trucks.
The fourth and final stop on today's tour is to the home of
long-time LOTS Member Phil Klopp. Phil’s layout has been a
destination for many a train lover (even LOTS in 1997) and has
been featured in TM’s Great Toy Train Layouts of America. His
walk-around layout takes up his entire basement. The layout
features dioramas highlighting the four seasons. Trains run
through tunnels, over trestles, around mountains, by and into
stations. One of the highlights of Phil's layout is a replica of
Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, PA. While Phil runs MTH, Lionel
and other O-gauge trains on the main level, there is also a
suspended level featuring Standard gauge and other pre-war
trains! Phil's spectacular layout is said to be one of the Top Ten
in the country. NOTE: the only way to access Phil's layout is
by a spiral staircase. Those with limited mobility will not be
able to see the layout.

turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, dessert, and beverages)
attendees will enjoy a two-hour tour of a GIGANTIC private
collection of Americana! American Treasure Tour is housed in
the former BFGoodrich® Tire factory (100,000 square feet), and
features nickelodeons and band organs, music boxes, calliopes,
classic automobiles, motorcycles, model airplanes, dolls and
dollhouses, animated store displays, circus and carnival
memorabilia, patriotic and holiday collections, and so much more!
Tens of thousands of items are displayed over three and one-half
acres. Part of the tour will be walking, and the rest by a ride on
tram. Don't forget to bring your camera!
Tour #5: Wilmington and Western Railroad Steam
Excursion, Marshall Steam Museum, Paul Jann and
Dennis Cannon Home Layouts
Thursday, July 14 ~ Time: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Adults: $99.00, Children: $75.00
Today’s tour takes us southwest to Wilmington, Delaware, for
a steam train ride on the Wilmington and Western Railroad. We'll
travel from Wilmington to Hockessin, stopping to enjoy a picnic
lunch at the
Mount Cuba
Picnic Grove.
While we are
there, we'll
be treated to
a photo runby, and have
additional
opportunities
to
take
photos of this mighty steam engine in a picturesque location.
Two lucky attendees will ride in the cab of the locomotive. If you
want an opportunity to ride in the cab, you must wear
closed-toe shoes and long
pants. While in Hockessin,
we'll visit the home layouts of
Paul Jann and Dennis
Cannon.
Paul's O-gauge layout is
38' x 10' and features a fully
sceniced logging camp along
with a large transfer table, a
18
rotary coal dump, K-line camera car, a "factory-on-fire," a fully
operational crane, and a fireworks display. His locomotives and
rolling stock are of vintage models and road names, but are of
modern manufacture.
Dennis' "Forever Christmas Eve" three-level, 500 square foot
tinplate layout features a combination of six gauges of trains
on 700 feet of
track, trolleys, Erector
structures,
antique
racecars, houses, an
airport, commercial
buildings, 1,600 lights,
300 tiny people, and
buttons that make 70
things happen such
as lights, movements,
sounds, a levitating
flying
saucer,
fireworks over Independence Hall, and finally, an erupting
volcano! Dennis has over 4,000 items in his collection including
an example of the first locomotive made by Lionel: a 2-7/8 gauge
B&O electric train. Many other rare brands of trains, including
Carlisle & Finch, are included in his static displays.
Before returning to Valley Forge, we'll stop at the Marshall
Steam Museum at Auburn
Heights Preserve. Auburn
Heights is the estate of the
family of Tom Marshall,
first president of the
historic Red Clay Valley.
During our visit we'll
experience life at the dawn
of the automotive age.
We'll see the largest
operating collection of Stanley Steamer cars, tour the mansion,
and view Mr. Marshal's two train layouts: a 1930's Standard
gauge layout, and an O-gauge layout with an eight level helix
similar to the one that was in Wanamaker's department store in
Philadelphia.
Tour #6: Home Layout Tours and
Byers' Choice Ltd. Factory Tour
Friday, July 15 ~ Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Adults: $35.00, Children: $25.00
The highly-anticipated Annual LOTS Home Layout Tour will
feature four home layouts and a Byers' Choice Ltd. Factory Tour.
Spend the day with fellow LOTS Members visiting Byers' Choice Ltd.
and the following layouts:
Phil Haile – Phil's 1,500 square foot O-gauge layout features
three above-ground tracks and one on a subterranean level. The
underground level has a subway system and coal mine! There’s a
large model of a Pennsylvania Station, a 200’ scale waterfall,
operating windmills, a lumberyard with sound effects, a sausage
factory which emits a smoked meat aroma, an amusement park
with 23 rides including a roller coaster, and so much more!
Choreographed background music plays while Phil turns all the
accessories on.
Bill Erskine – Bill runs mostly New Haven trains on his 31' x 27'
O-gauge layout featuring 1,000 feet of Gargraves track and
several Ross switches. Five trains run simultaneously on five
separate mainlines, but are interconnected on three levels. Bill
has a sixteen-track freight yard that holds 100 cars, and an
eighteen-track engine yard with 100+ engines. Bill really wasn’t
into scenery when he started, but has found that it’s LOTS of fun
creating scenes. He now has a maximum security prison,
refinery, coal mine, river (Upshitz Creek), village and town
February 2016
populated with people, dogs, cats (all but one alive), three
dinosaurs, skier chased by sharks, a goat and LOTS of additional
creative items found in the good ol’ USA. If you look under the
table, you’ll see Bill used manufactured wood I-beams as
supports instead of common dimensional lumber.
Earl Paine – Earl’s 32' x 36', three-level HO scale layout
models the Reading Railroad from Conshohocken, PA (near
Philadelphia) to Reading, PA in the 1970’s. Earl has more than
500 items in his collection. His 16-track roundhouse contains just
a few of the locomotives he enjoys running.
Glenn Stinson – Glenn’s 10' x 26' Standard gauge layout
recalls the 1930’s, with the trains he ran as a child still running on
the layout. Glenn has about 300 items in his collection. If it’s not
on the layout or in his display cases, it’s stored in one of the many
“original” boxes. In addition, on the walls around the layout,
Glenn has framed sheet music of train songs. Some of the titles
will bring back fond memories, and will be having you checking
your smart phone for a link to listen! Since his last name is
Stinson, he also has a small corner of Stinson airplane
memorabilia for attendees to enjoy.
Byers' Choice Ltd. – Byers’ Choice has been handcrafting
the Carolers® Figurines for over 35 years. In their Bucks County,
PA workshop, they continue the tradition of making each Caroler
by hand ... the same
way that Joyce
Byers did on her
kitchen table so
many years ago.
Today, a group of
80 skilled artisans
bring Joyce’s vision
to life as they
proudly create each
unique figurine. Our
visit starts with a
walk
down
a
cobblestone street
scene straight out of
Dickens’ London,
and then into the
Christmas Museum,
with displays of
Carolers past and present, as well as
depictions of Christmas traditions from
around the world. Of special note is the
observation deck, from which you can watch
Byers’ Choice artisans bring the Carolers to life. Be sure to view
the Crèche Room, a collection of over 200 nativity scenes from
around the world, and the outdoor gardens. Finally, stop in at the
Gift Emporium, where you can take home a Caroler or other gifts
for loved ones back at home.
Lunch for our Friday tour will be on your own at the local
Wegman's Market Cafe. The choices at Wegman's Market Café
are abundant. Grab some sushi, a hearty sandwich, a hot slice of
pizza or a healthy salad -- or browse additional Hot Bars for
incredible, freshly-made international dishes.

Tour #7: Winterthur Museum and Gardens
Saturday, July 16 ~ Time: 10:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Adults: $50.00, Children: $40.00
Winterthur is the former country estate of Henry Francis du
Pont (1880-1969). Today, Winterthur is the premier museum of
American decorative arts, featuring an unparalleled collection of
85,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640
and 1860. The collection is displayed in the 175-room house,
much as it was when the du Pont family lived here. Winterthur is
also home to a masterfully designed naturalistic garden and a
significant research library, all within 1,000 acres of rolling
meadows and forest ... an exceptional combination of beauty,
history, and learning. It is fascinating to learn about how Henry
would find a room in a house with the furnishings (furniture,
window trim, fireplace mantle, and the like) that he wanted.
Instead of finding the furnishings elsewhere, he’d buy the room.
One time, he even bought the ceiling! We'll tour the house and
gardens after eating lunch in the Visitor's Center cafeteria. Lunch
will be on your own, upon our arrival.
Valley Forge Model Train Show
Saturday, July 16 ~ Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
All registered LOTS Members and their guests can attend the
show, located in Delaware Hall on the lower level of the Valley
Forge Casino Resort, free of charge beginning at 9:00 a.m. on
Saturday, July 16, as long as they are wearing their 2016
Convention name badge.
The LOTS Annual Train Drag Races will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Everyone attending the train meet is invited to bring their fastest
O-gauge engines to race over our scale ¼-mile track. Prizes will
be awarded to the winners. Each entrant must have an engine to
run. The same engine may not run in more than one age bracket
except for our loaner engines.
Door prizes will be given away to several lucky attendees
throughout the day.
Annual Banquet
Saturday, July 16 ~ Time: 6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Adults: $60.00, Children: $25.00
The banquet will be held on Saturday, July 16 in the Grand
Ballroom at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge. A cash bar will be
available beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:30
p.m. Dinner will be buffet style, featuring mixed greens salad,
German potato salad, fruit salad, fresh rolls, seared chicken
breast and roasted pork loin, a starch, seasonal vegetables, and
assorted cakes and pastries for dessert, along with coffee and
tea.
During dinner, a slide show will recap highlights of the week’s
events. After dinner, we’ll be entertained by Neill Hartley of NH
Productions. Neill's The Magic of Lionel: The story of Joshua
Lionel Cowen is a fabulous one-man show about the founding
and history of the most famous toy train company in the world!
As with all past LOTS Banquets, door prizes, table favors, and
unparalleled camaraderie are also included.
Looking forward to seeing LOTS of you in
