Himanshu Bhatt: Restaurant Owner and Event Organizer
V
ersatile and energetic are the words that come to your mind when you meet Himanshu
Bhatt. Bubbling with enthusiasm he talks animatedly about how he started his long career
in the entertainment industry in India 25 years ago. He has organized over 300 fashion shows
in his lifetime and has worked with Reliance and Mudra Communications. He has worked with
celebrities such as Sri Devi and Jaya Prada. After he moved to the US in 2000, he debated on
opening a restaurant, a store or a business related to wedding planning. The idea of Event Management was more attractive to him and, Subham, a wedding planning business was launched in
2001. In 2002, Himanshu opened the doors of his first restaurant in Orlando called Khaasiyat,
followed by his second restaurant, Bombay Bistro, in 2004. Himanshu could not stay away from
his love for event management, so in 2003 not satisfied with all that he had already taken on, he
embarked upon another venture, Sankalp Entertainment, through which he organizes orchestras,
dramas, shows and concerts in the Orlando area. His plans are to take Sankalp to a higher level and in this effort, Sankalp has signed
on Falguni Pathak for 3 years. Himanshu attributes his success and energy to his wife, Minal Bhatt, without whom he says he would
not have been able to achieve what he has. Minal manages Bombay Bistro, his partner, Bhanu Chavda, manages Khaasiyat while Himanshu concentrates on making the larger picture work.
Samant Sharma:
Assistant Vice President; Financial Advisor, Merrill Lynch
S
amant comes across as a tireless and highly motivated individual who strives to put young
professionals on the map. Hailing from a family of physicians, Samant’s passion is finance
and the stock market. He started his career at Morgan Stanley as an intern. He trained in the
World Trade Center in New York in the very heart of the financial market. He moved to Tampa in
October of 2001 and started building his portfolio from the ground up. He was recently recruited
by Merrill Lynch as an Assistant Vice President. He says there are three major facets to his
personality which work for him professionally: A psychologist, in that he helps people deal with
their emotions when it comes to their finances, a teacher, in that he explains the dynamics of an
investment portfolio to his clients and, a leader, in that he helps people invest money wisely. No
small feat for someone so young, but Samant is modest in his achievements and says that there
is a lot more to him than just his ‘financial’ side! He has single handedly put together a Young Professionals council which currently
comprises of about 30 – 40 members and he hopes to mobilize this council towards a greater cause. He offers young professionals a
meeting place every month where they can network and meet other people from the same area and his ultimate aim with this council is
to be able to bring the community closer. If you would like to be a part of the Young Professionals Council, please contact Samant at

Swapna Shah: Bureau Chief for Florida, TV Asia
I
f you were to attend an Indian function of any note in the Tampa Bay area, you wouldn’t go
far without noticing a graceful figure flitting busily about taking care of a multitude of tasks
in the most quiet and efficient of manners. With a degree in Kathak and a frequent contestant in
the Fogana competitions of dance, this person is Swapna Shah, most recently appointed Bureau
Chief of Florida for TV Asia. Swapna came to the US in 1986. She began her undergraduate
course work in New Jersey where she met her husband, Dr. Vrajesh Shah. She moved to Tampa
in 1992 when her daughter, Vidhi, was one month old. Swapna says her husband has been her
biggest supporter and friend. A great believer in performing one’s duties without thinking of results, Swapna has performed tirelessly in countless arenas for the South Asian community. She
was appointed Secretary and, subsequently, President of the Gujarati Samaj Association. She is
the first woman to be appointed President of Gujarati Samaj in 18 years. She has spearheaded extremely noteworthy causes such as, a
half hour TV show called Sanskriti, forums for women and youth, as well as the Golden Age SeniorsClub. She wishes to inspire other
women and hopes that they will also take the lead and be more involved in the community. As Bureau Chief of Florida for TV Asia
she wishes to take Tampa Bay to the mainstream public eye all over the US.

Sunny Leone - Exclusive Interview
BY Shaphali Jain
Sunny Leone is the first Indian woman to have made it to Penthouse as the 2003 Penthouse Pet of the Year. She is of Indian origin,
was born in Ontario, Canada and currently lives in California.
CM: Sunny tell us a little about
you, your childhood, and your
background.
SL: Sure! I would love to!! I
am Punjabi and was brought
up going to the Gurudwara
every Sunday. I grew up
playing all kinds of sports
– hockey, soccer, field hockey
(yes, I was in Canada so
hockey played a major role
in your choice of sports!!). We
ate Indian food Sunday through
Thursday and both my brother
and I had chores to do around
the house. I had a regular,
normal childhood and
upbringing. My parents
are wonderful in every
sense of the word.
CM: Did you invest this money or did
you spend it all?
SL: Oh no! I invested it wisely. I put
most of it back into my business and
into investments. I am going to buy a
house soon!
CM: Is Sunny Leone your real
name?
SL: Sunny is but Leone was given to
me by Penthouse.
CM: How would you
describe yourself?
SL: (Laughs) I always find
that question hard to answer. I would have to say
that my family keeps me grounded. I grew up being
told that happiness should always come first and from
within. I am happy doing what I do and I try not to regret
anything I’ve done. I try to move forward and I keep really busy.
I am very athletic and love to be involved in sports. I run my
own website. I own my website and manage all aspects of my
career myself.
CM: How ‘desi’ are you? In terms of Indian food, Bollywood
etc
SL: I LOVE my mom’s cooking. I tried to learn how to make Indian food and can make simple stuff like aloo gobhi, daal, rotis,
etc. I’m not much into Bollywood now. I did watch a lot of hindi
movies while I was growing up, but don’t really get the chance
to do that anymore. I love Hindi music.
CM: How did life change for you after you got chosen as
Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003?
SL: I think the best part of becoming a Penthouse Pet was that
I got to travel all over the US. Most 18-19 year olds don’t get to
do this and it was a wonderful experience. I got to meet a lot of
different kind of people, I got a lot of publicity and I made a lot
of money.

CM: What kind of man would be Mr.
Right for you? Is there a Mr. Right in your
life right now?
SL: I am currently single. Mr. Right for me
would be the kind of man who is caring, one
who listens, has more to say than just the
same old stuff, is physically fit and can
keep up with me… athletically speaking! One who is not jealous, is secure in
himself, has future goals for himself and
is supportive of what I do or choose to do
in life.
CM: Tell us your idea of the following:
Passion: Be happy and love what you do.
Romance: Nice dinner on the beach, hanging out, good conversation and a chocolate sundae!
Intimacy: Continuing to do the little things you did for each
other when you first met.
Fidelity: Be true to yourself because if you can’t be true to yourself then you can’t be true to anyone else. Communicate your
needs with your partner from the very beginning.
CM: What is your take on women?
We are totally different from men.
We are more compassionate.
We overthink.
We are more romantic.
We wield more power than we give ourselves credit for (if we
decided to say “No” more often, we would be even more powerful!

High Tech Digital Photo Management
Organizing, Fixing, Sharing and Printing
By Vish Viswanathan
these issues here and hopefully spare you the torture of going through
a deluge of pictures that you do not know what
to do with. Holidays should be enjoyable – let’s
make the memories last easily!
Typical holiday season – a click here and a click there to capture
the special moments and before you know it
you have a gazillion stored in your top of the
line digital camera and no idea as to how to
organize, fix, share and print them. I spent the
holidays with my family and friends and happily
captured some precious family moments with
my camera. The pictures looked great on the
camera LCD screen. However, it was a different
story when I went home and downloaded them
on my computer! There were photos with redeye, dark backgrounds and low lighting which I
had to fix and organize so that I could find them
and share them with family and friends. Did I
mention printing them? This is a learning experience every single year. I am going to address
Over the years, I have accumulated over 10,000
digital pictures on my computer. Organizing
them is a nightmare unless you use photo management software. I have tested and used some
free and some commercial photo management
applications, but the two that I like the best are
Adobe Photoshop Album and Picasa (now owned
by Google). Finally, I can find that cute photo of
my older son during his first visit to India or all
the pictures from his first birthday party or even
all of his birthday party pictures till date.
Photo Management Software
This is a very powerful and useful feature, because once the photos
are tagged, it just takes a click to filter out all the photos that match
your criteria.
Adobe Photoshop Album
Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 helps me bring sanity into my, otherwise, insane digital photo world. When you install this software,
you are offered the option to scan your hard drive for all your digital photos. It then automatically organizes the photographs and lets
you move or copy them to different locations. You may even import
photographs directly from your digital camera to your computer.
I usually import my photos into a temporary directory (using Photoshop Album) on my computer and then make a backup copy of all
the photos onto a CD or DVD, before fixing the photos or organizing them into folders.
Google Picasa 2
Picasa is a free product. Picasa 2 has a lot to offer but from a photo
management standpoint, Adobe Photoshop Album is a step ahead.
In Picasa you can “label” photos and you can create labels for anything you like and assign them to photos and view only the photos
that match those labels. All that you need to do is, select photographs, click and add to a label. Unfortunately, labels have a long
way to go compared to Photoshop Album’s tags. For one, although
photos can have multiple labels, you can only view photos that
match one label at a time. In other words, with Photoshop Album
I can see all photos tagged to show my youngest son AND tagged
as birthday photos. With Picasa, I can only see all the photos of my
youngest son or all the photos of birthdays – not the combination of
the two.
With Photoshop Album you can create “tags” and assign them to
photos. For example, I have a tag for my wife, each of my sons
and myself and when I import a batch of photos, I quickly drag and
drop the tags on the photos. Similarly, photos can be tagged for
places – such as when we were in India – or events, such as Diwali.
Now that you have fixed and organized your
photos you may want to share them with
family and friends and print them online.
Here are a few websites that offer these
services.
Flickr (www.flickr.com -- now owned by Yahoo)
is one of the best online photo sharing sites that I
have come across and it is also a good online photo
management tool. Flickr allows you to upload your
photos from your camera, phone or PC, organize
them, edit and fix them, add tags and comments to
your photos, post photos to blogs etc. It’s a powerful
online tool.
I’ve been using Kodak EasyShare Gallery (formerly Ofoto) (www.kodakgallery.com) for many years
now and it’s still my favorite online photo sharing
and printing website. Kodak Gallery offers unlimited
storage space for free. It allows you to upload your
photos, organize them in albums, share them with
friends and also print them. The print quality is good
and it costs 15 cents for a 4”x6” print.
PhotoWorks (www.photoworks.com)is a good alternative as their picture quality is slightly better than
Kodak Gallery. They charge 19 cents for a 4”x6”
print. A new crop of online services makes organizing, editing and sharing your digital pictures a snap…
all you need to know is how to point and click.
Slide.com
Download the site’s photo indexing software, and
you can create a slide show of your photos to share
with your groups and friends. The slide show appears
as a small strip on your desktop and each time you
drag and drop a new picture, they will get an email
alert.
Riya.com
Riya is a photosearch tool that recognizes a friendly
face. Follow a simple setup procedure and its face
recognition technology can identify who’s who in
almost any photo and it can also recognize text and
other information. Once you have finished training,
tagging and auto-tagging your photos, you can search
and browse by person, album (original folder name),
text in photos, date and by the photos you have
received from others.
Hello.com
Hello (owned by Google) is a photo sharing feature
of Picasa that allows you to share your photos
instantly via chat. It’s primarily chat with pictures
where you can send pictures to your friends within
seconds and get instant feedback.

Top Guns of Cricket in the Tampa Bay Area

the playing surface, practice session nets and batting protection

The Rebels make their mark
as they walk away with the
2nd place trophy for division B
cricket for 2005.
Sachin Deokar is the 2nd place
winner for the best bowling average with 5 wickets in a game.
Maksood Indawala not only
scored a century but also won
1st place for batting average and
1st place for most runs scored.
Chandrasekhar Panchavati
scored a century and won 1st
place for best bowling average
and 2nd place for best batting
average with 5 wickets in a
game.
“We welcome everyone interested in watching or playing
cricket to come and enjoy the game as well as meet the cricketers
and their families in the Tampa Bay area” says Prashant Desai, President of
Rebels Sports, Inc.
In October 2004, a group of cricket enthusiasts formed Rebels Sports
Inc. in Tampa, Florida with the intention of playing club-level cricket
and promoting the game in the Tampa Bay area. The club is a registered member of the Central Florida Cricket Club (CFCL), which
is affiliated with the United States of America Cricket Association
(USACA).
In its maiden year, the club was granted entry into the ‘B’ Division
of the CFCL, with sixteen
other teams from the central
Florida region. During this
period, the club membership
swelled to twenty four and
Rebels Cricket was underway.
One of the goals of Rebels Sports,
Inc. is to promote cricket as a
sport to the local youth. They
have plans to conduct summer
weekend camps to offer professional coaching. The CFCL is also
looking for cricketers to represent
the Under-19 and Under-25 teams
and possibly represent United
States in international tournaments.
Although all members pay nominal
registration fees, the dues are not
adequate to effectively run the club on a long-term basis. To this end,
the club is actively looking for sponsors to cover some of the club’s
operating costs.
For more information on Rebels Cricket and links to other
relevant sites, visit www.rebelssports.org or contact Yogesh Mahadevah at (727) 488 1520.
The club boasts of some of
the most talented cricketers
in the Tampa Bay area who
have played cricket extensively in India and England
before making Tampa their
home. The regular practice
sessions coupled with the
wealth of experience carried by these individuals has infused the players with enthusiasm to achieve the highest
standards on and off the ground.
The Rebels set an amazing first year record (11-2-1) and
are now qualified to move up to Division ‘A’ in 2006.
Several Rebels currently represent India in the annual
Leo-Moxey Tournament of Nations organized by the
CFCL.
A lot of effort has been put in to building the required infrastructure that is conducive to competitive cricket in the
Tampa Bay area. Hillsborough County Parks Department
has assigned the Hamilton Ground as the home ground
for the Rebels. The club has acquired all the necessary
equipment for its players including a full-length mat for

Auntyji Ko Pucho
By: Auntyji
Auntyji came across the premier issue of
CityMasala (which she has to admit was quite
chat-patta) at an Indian Restaurant in Jackson
Heights while waiting for her takeout order.
A young and nubile beauty approached her
tentatively and Auntyji struck up a conversation with her. The girl looked lonely and timid
and Auntyji’s kind heart went out to her. She
couldn’t resist getting involved and before she
knew it, she was helping this poor lost soul.
The conversation went something like this:
Q: Auntyji, I got married a few weeks ago
in India and have just moved here. My
husband is at work all day and when he gets
back he is too tired to take me out anywhere
or even talk to me much. I miss my friends
and family back home so much. I don’t
know anyone here. What should I do?
Auntyji: Hai, Hai, Hai – you silly ungrateful girl. . America is the land of opportunity!
Would you rather be in your gaon still with no
electricity and running water, milking the cows
and getting verbally abused by your motherin-law? Celebrate your freedom by taking
your husband’s credit card and go shopping at
Victoria’s Secret. When your husband comes
back he will no longer be tired and his mouth
will be too busy to talk. You also need to make
new friends and adopt a new family.
After Auntyji got home with her delicious food,
she came upon a brilliant idea. She decided
that she would do a good deed for the poor
Desis and wanna-be Desis out there who are
completely lost and confused.
Every self respecting magazine (or for that
matter every trashy gossip rag) deserves a good
advice column. Now Auntyji is a very busy
woman … but she is also very worldly, so, she
is willing to take some time out from her hectic
schedule to give helpful suggestions to the
needy (especially you) by starting a “Auntyji
ko Pucho” column in CityMasala.
Before we go any further let’s get some rules
in place. Just because Auntyji is willing to
listen to your silly problems does not mean
that she will have a kind word for you. Even
though her words might seem harsh to you,
there will be a silver lining of wisdom in
them (if you can find it). More personalities than Sybil exist in this mind (at least
that’s what we think), and this tongue can
get quite caustic at times. So there will be
many a time when rather than attempting to
resolve your pathetic problem, Auntyji will
be expressing her opinion and mind.
Since this is her first column Auntyji would
like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit
about herself. If she gets delusional or if
some of the details are not quite right, then
it’s either senility or one of the multiple
personalities kicking in.
Auntyji will not disclose her age - a woman
is of timeless beauty - and gentlemen accept
that. (So you cats can keep your claws in!).
Auntyji has fallen upon hard times and
is living in a fifth floor walk up studio in
Jackson Heights, New York; but it was not
always so. Auntyji had many admirers who
wined and dined her. She traveled all over
the world. She is your regular “been there done
that” gal. From her humble beginnings under
the fly-over in Defence Colony in New Delhi
(which had the best chai and paranthas to eat at
2:00 in the morning), Auntyji rose to stardom
in Bollywood, had affairs with royalty, and
lived the life of the rich and famous (think the
Indian Evita).
Auntyji came to America before most of you
bachhas were even born. She has friends of
all ages, from all walks of life and in cities all
over, so a lot of interesting travel gets done,
and advice gets drawn from those experiences.
Auntyji likes her food a lot and more often
than not, the food likes her waist a lot. She is
particularly fond of jalebi and samosa with her
afternoon tea and is also very partial to butter
chicken for dinner. Now I know that some of
you will frown upon this, but Auntyji likes a
peg or two of her nasha
(OK, she admits it, it’s
actually two vodka
martinis – straight up).
But at this age, Auntyji
does not care what
people think. She does
not judge people, and
believes that she should
not be judged either.
One day Aunty ji would
like to move to Florida.
She likes sunshine and
City Masala
10
warm weather. Auntyji does not understand
these gora people who run out in the sun to
become bhura, and us desis who run away
from it and apply Fair and Lovely cream to
become gora.
Now, through City Masala, Auntyji will make
it her mission to educate you desis on the way
of life according to her mantra. She will tell
the coconuts out there (yes, you know who you
are) that there is no pride in being one, and that
they should either ask Michael Jackson to give
them the name of his bleaching powder, or just
get over it. She will teach the ganwars (fresh
off the boat) and those jhatkas (the new and
suddenly rich) the etiquette of good living (aka
Martha Stewart). Auntyji might even convince
you stingy baniyas and gujjus out there that
money should be spent on entertainment and
fulfillment (and not gold). By the time Auntyji
is done with you CityMasala readers, you will
be refined enough to sip Cosmopolitans with
the girls from Sex and the City.
At this point most of you are probably very
angry with Auntyji (maybe not you Madrasis
and Bengalis yet… but you are in for a special
treat!) but that is not her intention. She wants to
help you, remember – no pain, no gain.
On this note, Auntyji bids you alvida, and
waits to hear from you. Don’t forget to write at
[email protected].

REEL TALK
Bollywood Movie Reviews
By Kavita Trivedi
Humko Tumse Pyar Hai Dir: Bunty Soorma/ Vikram Bhatt Cast: Bobby Deol, Arjun Rampal, Amisha
Patel
Durga (Amisha) is a beautiful blind village girl in Rajasthan. When engineer Rohit (Arjun)
arrives in the village on a business trip, he is smitten by Durga and they eventually fall in love
with each other. Durga goes to the city to have an eye operation to restore her sight and is
made to believe that Rohit has died in an accident. With no one to turn to, she finds solace in
the company of an eligible bachelor, Raj (Bobby). However fate puts three lives at stake when
we see that Rohit is still alive but Durga cannot recognise him. Love triangles in Bollywood
movies are known to be a bit of a cliché as the 2005 musical love Story Barsaat proved. Humko Tumse Pyar Hai carries the same trademark and focuses on human emotions, sacrifice and love. Amisha teams up once again with
Bobby Deol and Arjun Rampal after Humraaz and Vaada. The sad death of director Bunty Soorma delayed the release of this movie.
Anand Raj Anand has penned a great soundtrack with a touch of traditional folk numbers with leading playback singers Kumar Sanu
and Alka Yagnik. The title track, ‘Kaise Tumhe’ and ‘Chori se dil ko’ are very popular.
Humko Tumse Pyar Hai is an emotional love story focusing on the trials and tribulations of a woman who nurtures love at different
stages in her life.
Home Delivery Dir: Sujoy Ghosh Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Mahima Chaudhury, Ayesha Takia and Boman Irani
Struggling writer Sunny Malhotra (Oberoi) has a very cynical and arrogant attitude towards life, especially about marrying his fiancée Jenny (Takia). After bagging a screenplay
project for a Karan Johar movie, Sunny realises that he has bitten off more than he can
chew. He finds himself juggling deadlines and hot dates with South Indian superstar Maya
(Mahima). To make matters worse, an erratic 51 year old pizza delivery man (Boman Irani)
lands up on his doorstep and offers more than just a pizza! Sunny finds himself assessing
the very simple lessons of life and falling dismally short. Leading actor Vivek Oberoi’s performance is average and the real show stealer is Boman Irani whose comedic performance
is fun to watch and actually manages to bring this dull storyline to life. The plot may seem
rather feeble, but at least you can count on music composers Vishal- Shekhar of Dus and
Salaam Namaste fame to deliver a decent soundtrack. The title song of the movie tops the list and sees Boman Irani lending his vocals
for the first time, which is actually quite hilarious. ‘Kaash’ is a very chilled and melodious track, which blends well with the smooth
vocals of Shaan.
Ek Ajnabee Dir: Apoorva Lakhia Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Arjun Rampal, Perizaad Zorobian and Rucha
Vadhya
The year 2005 showcased a string of remarkable films starring Bollywood phenomenon,
Amitabh Bachchan, which created a powerful impact at the box office. At the age of 63, it
is clear that this veteran artiste is still the most sought after actor today. In aspiring director
Apoorva Lakhia’s second movie release Amitabh Bachchan reunites with his Aankhen co-star
Arjun Rampal in this action packed thriller. Based on Hollywood’s Denzel Washington’s
smash hit, Man on Fire, ex-officer Suryaveer Singh (Bachchan) is a lonely misfit living in a
foreign country who has lost everything he has ever loved and is on the brink of self destruction. Bodyguard to eight year old Anamika (Rucha Vadhya), he finds redemption in her
smile and zest for life. Her simple attitude towards life helps him start over. When Suryaveer
fails to protect the child from brutal kidnappers who want money from her wealthy parents,
he is consumed with rage and fights to save her life. Expectations are high for Ek Ajnabee.
The stylish packaging and the powerful and slick music composed by Amar Mohile and duo, Vishal-Shekhar is not disappointing.
Bachchan returns with an intense and angry performance of a fallen ex army officer and excellently portrays the character’s complex
emotions of pain, love and hatred.
With Arjun Rampal and Perizaad Zorobian in supporting roles, Ek Ajnabee tells the story of deceit, love, revenge and honour. Highly
recommended.

The Al Pacino Confessions
By Zed Rahman
It is a common myth that men are the
reclusive sex, especially when it comes to
sharing their thoughts and feelings, while
women do so at the drop of a hat.
Not long ago Jay, an old time friend and
co worker called me up to meet for a quick
drink that evening. ‘You buying?’ I asked.
‘You can have as many Al Pacinos as you
like’ came the answer. We had named
our cappuccinos after the great actor, Al
Pacino, because our beverages always
came with extra shots – a homage to our
favorite film Scarface. We arranged to
meet at the same Starbucks that we used
to frequent during lunch hour. ‘Wonderful! I thought. I hadn’t seen Jay for over
ten months although we had kept in touch
intermittently via email. I was looking
forward to seeing him again. I arrived at
Starbucks and scanned the café for a man
in a black suit. Jay always wore black.
He maintained that it reflected his elusive
personality. Jay was twenty-nine, educated
at Oxford and an aspiring poet. The last
I heard of him was when he was dating a
model - Amisha. Blessed with good looks
and the devil’s charm he also had this
infectious smile, which made one wonder
how anyone could be so happy without the
aid of narcotics.
However, tonight, Jay sported no such
look. Clueless, I greeted him ‘What’s up
dude, you look like you’ve just lost your
libido’. Without any warning Jay burst
into tears. The sight of a grown man weeping within nanoseconds of meeting me
startled me, to say the least! People were
looking in our direction - as if I were to
blame for this eruption of tears - and my
skin tone now resembled that of a plum.
Strangely, I felt like one too. Thankfully,
he quickly composed himself quickly. I attempted to comfort him. ‘Hey, calm down’
I said, ‘I didn’t mean it literally. I’m sure it
works fine’, and then flinched. Aargh! ‘Let
me get the Pacinos first and we’ll talk’.
The so-called free drinks were now out of
the question and I knew this was going to
be a very long evening.
I returned with our drinks and examined
his face. His eyes looked exhausted and
it was obvious that the past twenty-four
hours had not been very kind to him.
‘I wanted to get away and didn’t know
whom to talk to’, he said. For the next
City Masala
hour, he explained how things were magical with him and Amisha and how he had
finally found the girl he could see a future
with. ‘So why are you crying? Has she
done something to hurt you?’ I asked.
‘No’, he replied. A long pause followed.
‘I hurt Ami. I’ve been holding something
back from her. We’ve been fighting for the
past few weeks and finally, she left me last
night’.
I began praying he wouldn’t share some
intimate, medical condition with me
– I was only half way through my fourth
Pacino and I wanted to finish it. Jay was
smart, deadly smart, and he knew exactly
where the line was. ‘We’ve been trying
to sleep together ever since we met but I
couldn’t bring myself to do it’. Jay looked
at his drink and continued softly, ‘I’m
still a virgin, Zed’. Where’s the gun when
you need it??? ‘Excuse me?’ I replied a
little too sharply. He then looked into my
eyes. I wished he hadn’t - this was not
the time for eye contact. ‘I haven’t slept
with anyone before, and I lied to Ami that
I had. She is really upset that I lied to her
at all. I don’t want to lose her but it looks
like I already have’. I was
frowning, and frowning
hard. Forget blowing my
brains out, I now wanted
to dine with Hannibal
Lector. And for the record, I’ve never been able
to drink an Al Pacino the
same way again.
He dove into his past
– the ex girlfriends, his
troubled childhood, his
insecurities, as well as his
sexual desires – the guy
even recited a love poem
that he wrote for Amisha
while he waited for me to
show up. Jay was killing
me and he wasn’t killing
me softly either. All of
this seemed totally out of
character. Jay had stature,
poise, and was deeply
rooted and yet, here
he was, teary eyed and
frustrated because he was
still a virgin. He had lied
to his girlfriend about his
15
virginity and she in turn left him because
of the lie. Jay continued talking and I
did not have the heart to stop him from
pouring his heart out. I admit a small part
of me felt for him and I was compelled
to stay. Am I glad that he had shared this
confession with me? Heck No!
Starbucks was closing and it was time for
us to leave. It is now winter in London;
the harsh winds hold no compassion and
instantly froze our lips as we stepped
outside. ‘Just be honest with her, Jay. Nobody likes being lied to and if she really
loves you, she’ll understand’. I wanted
to continue but was interrupted by Jay’s
cell phone. When he answered it his face
relaxed and he smiled. All was not lost and
there was still hope. It was Amisha – she
wanted to see him again! Couples!! Jay
thanked me for the evening and promised
to pay for the drinks next time. I’m sure
we’ve crossed that road before. When
we parted I tried to make sense of our
conversation. I still believe men keep their
thoughts to themselves but when they rain
they pour like the Indian monsoon season

Abhishek Bachchan is the most qualified bachelor in Bollywood. Everyone’s dying to fix him up

heard that Priyanka Chopra was nursing more than a crush for him. Now Tabu is the latest in a long

Newsflash!!!
Katrina Kaif is supposed to take over Jaya Bachchan’s role of the young widow in Ram Gopal

Anika’s Zen
By Anika Sharma
The World Needs Joanne
My father has always believed that most of the people we meet in our
life were meant to cross our path. After all, there is a higher being that ensures this. Never have I thought this to be truer than when think of Joanne.
My husband and I met her as a realtor and she is now a family friend.
Joanne sold us our house. If you think Indians are crazy, you should
meet Italians and Joanne, who (in spite of being born and brought up
in America) is a true Italian in every sense of the ‘pasta’ word. I still
remember when we were house hunting. It was during the month of June
almost two years ago. My husband and I fell in love with this little house
set exquisitely in a beautifully manicured garden. I think we fell in love
with the garden more than we fell in love with the house! How were we to
know any better? We were completely confused like all other first time homeowners! It was a crazy house on the inside, with no clear flow and the
ceiling nearly touched our heads (imagine, and we are small people!) and
as if that were not enough, it had a wet wet wet basement. But, we were
foolish and we still wanted to put in an offer. Now, to any other realtor, the
word ‘offer’ is almost magical, signaling an end to yet another lucrative
deal. Not to Joanne. I have never met a more reluctant realtor. She almost
refused to do the necessary paperwork for us to be able to purchase the
house. She maintained that she could never sell a house like that to a first
time homeowner – especially one with such a wet basement!
Of course, she was the one who soon introduced us to our current home
– an old colonial house that we fell madly in love with as well! But this is
not a story of a realtor. This is the story of Joanne – a woman who gets invited to every baby shower, wedding, anniversary celebration and even the
average simple home party. In a circle of ‘Keralites’ where to admit me
(a Punjabi!) is an aberration, Joanne is invited with open arms and hearts.
She blends seamlessly into her clients’ lives, into every gathering that she
"OMBAY3IZZLER
is invited to – like cheese on a pizza! What makes her so special? She
has the innate ability to make you feel like THE most important person
EVER, on the face of this planet.
When we first moved into our lovely colonial home, we had no furniture; our house needed moldings and we had a bathroom to remodel. Yet
Joanne walked in and commented on how serene and ‘Zen like’ the house
felt! Charming words to say the least! She came to my baby shower, and
saw all the neighbors and friends whom my husband has secretly invited.
Her comments? She said that it was my karma and friendship that had
enriched the entire baby shower and it was one of the best she had ever
attended! The little voice in my heart knew that she was exaggerating but
I enjoyed her compliments and had no reason to complain! Recently we
invited Joanne, her wonderfully crazy Sicilian husband, and her sons to
a jam party. My husband was jamming on the drums with the neighbors
and they actually created some pleasant auditory sounds. The theme was
‘spice’ and Joanne was just the spice we needed to add to the curry and to
liven up the party.
Thank God for Joanne. In a world where people are becoming ruder,
harsher and crueler, it feels pretty good to know someone who always
has a kind word for you. Think about the last time when you were nice to
someone. Have you asked a neighbor over for some coffee or tea, called
someone up to touch base, or just to pass on some good vibes? I can
honestly say that I do not do this often enough. I also know of people who
call only when they need something or for a selfish reason. I would like to
believe that a Joanne exists in each one of us. If we freed her from our demons, we would be able to reach out to more of our friends and neighbors
and have that special warmth embrace all of us. What is the right time to
begin? Here and now is as good as any.

Getting to know the RED
By Ajay Jambhekar
Cabernet Sauvignon - Ka-behr-NAY so-vihn-YOHN
Sauvignon grapes, although the trend
recently has been toward some blending,
as in Bordeaux. In Australia, there is a
predilection to blend Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz, which is widely grown
there.
The Drink Palate: Cabernet
Sauvignon is considered to be the king
of red wines. It is certainly the most
successful and popular of the top-quality red wine grapes. It is also the basis
for most of California’s superb red
wines. This reputation for excellence
has launched a Cabernet Sauvignon
popularity boom around the world. In
addition, Cabernet Sauvignon has begun
making inroads into areas of Spain and
Italy where local grapes have dominated
the wine market for centuries.
Among the most notable Cabernet
Sauvignon-based wines are those from
France: Château Lafite-Rothschild,
Château Latour, Château Mouton-Rothschild, and Château Margaux. Some
good Cabernet Sauvignon are Cellar # 8,
Columbia Crest, Hanna, Jordan and Far
Niente.
The flavor, structure, complexity, and
longevity of wines made from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape is what makes it
so popular. Its fruity flavors have been
described as cherry, black cherry, black
currant (cassis), and raspberry. In addition, other flavor descriptors include
mint, cedar and bell pepper. The word
tobacco is often used to describe older
vintages.
The Food Palate: Almost anything goes
with a Cabernet. Lamb is the classic
match. Try a roasted leg or grilled chops.
This fruity wine is a pleasure with most
meals but a definite hit with tandoori
foods. People also enjoy this wine with
the finer cuts of lamb, beef or duck. Any
of the lighter red meats also go well with a good Cabernet. It is
probably the most universally liked of all red wines.
In California, wines are often made with 100 percent Cabernet

Ajanta Indian Cuisine
Ajanta Indian Cuisine is nestled inside the Ramada Inn Mirage
in St Petersburg and looks just like any other Indian restaurant.
It is the kind of restaurant that you chance upon and feel incredibly good about. The buffet smells
tempting and its aroma wafts all
the way into the lobby. We made a
beeline for it and were pleasantly
surprised by the generous spread of
main dishes. There was the regular
array of appetizers, naan (absolutely
fresh, soft, piping hot and brought to
your table), rice, salads and chutneys
and then there was Navrattan Curry,
Chana Amritsari, Vegetable Bhaji,
Chicken Curry Masala, Goat curry
and Tandoori Chicken. The Goat
curry was “finger licking good”! The
rest of the dishes were also very well made but I would go there

managed to get the recipe from Mr. Bonkim, but he swore me to
secrecy, so unfortunately, I cannot share it with you. You’re just
going to have to make a trip to the
restaurant yourself and see if you can
get it out of him!) We enjoyed the

were told that they also have Shahi

assortment. Ajanta also boasts a
collection of wines from the Grover Vineyards in Bangalore, India.
They offer a Sauvignon Blanc and a

I hate my cell phone! I was at a bar with a couple of my girl friends the other day
and we were talking about, what else, bedroom behavior. The bartender was kind of
cute, leaning in every once in a while, blatantly eavesdropping in on our conversation.
At one point I was alone with him and he asked innocently, “So you’re saying size
does matter?” Later, as we left the bar, I got a phone call from my boyfriend asking
me not to discuss the details of our love life with strange men in bars. My phone had
punched ‘send’ and called the first saved number and he had overheard the whole
night’s conversation! That’s what I get for dating a guy named Ajay!

I tear out pages from magazines. If I see a picture or read a short article that I like I
just have to rip it out and take it home with me. That would be fine if I actually owned
them, but I tear them out from magazines in doctors’ offices, libraries, even from
friends’ homes! I haven’t been caught yet, but I am dreading the moment I am walked
in on by an irate librarian asking me “What are you doing?”
STEALING BEAUTY
I did something that could hurt my marriage! I have never forgotten my first love and recently
I found him on classmates.com. I left the situation alone as I was uncertain about his feelings
for me and did not even know if he was married or not. About a month later, I received an
email from classmates.com saying that he wanted to find out how I was. I was, to say the least,
ecstatic! I tried to get in touch with him after that but never heard from him. I googled his name
out of curiosity and what I found completely blew me away. I found a picture of him with his
wife and child. Seeing his face brought back all the old memories. Now I want to hear from
him more than ever, even though both he and I are married! I had quite a surprise yesterday.
Classmates sent me confirmations that he had read my emails! Now I have to wait and wonder if
I should give into temptation or play it safe and
leave the past where it belongs.
