Seasonal Prescribed Burn Crew
HELP WANTED
Habitat Forever, LLC, part of Pheasants Forever, a national wildlife habitat organization, is seeking two individuals to be part of its East Central Iowa grassland prescribed burn crew for spring 2015 and beyond. These are
part-time, seasonal positions for the prescribed burn season
- generally from March 15 to May 15, subject to weather, with
a limited amount of work from September through November.
Crew can usually expect to accrue 100 - 200 hours during the spring season.
Applicants with prior training and grassland prescribed burn experience and
S130 / S190 training will be top candidates. Candidates must be in good physical
condition, possess an aptitude for fire work, be able to tolerate smoke, take and
follow direction very well yet be able to think clearly and perform under pressure,
be generally available 5-7 days a week throughout the spring fire season, and
be able to drive themselves to the crew’s home base for daily deployment. Possession of a Class A CDL, participation in a drug & alcohol testing program and
having basic knowledge of ATV’s and small engines could all be plus’s. Crew
home base is 4 miles east of Williamsburg, IA and the majority of prescribed fires
will be within a 80 mile radius.

Vote to Help Rescue more Dogs like Conor
Safe Haven’s entry in an essay contest regarding heartwarming adoptions of animals
during the recent holiday season has made it
to the finals.
The voting has reached the phase where the
public votes at http://www.animalcenter.org/
home4theholidays/essay_contest.aspx to determine the winner of the $1,000 for the winning rescue group.
The story submitted was Conor’s. Please consider going online and voting for his story to
benefit animal rescue in our area.
Conor came to Safe Haven of Iowa County
from an adjoining county that did not have
an animal rescue group to assist in situations
such as his.
He was found wandering from yard to yard in
a small town where no one was taking responsibility for him. He was extremely thin and getting thinner by the day! Plus, it was November
and the weather was turning colder.
Finally, a young lady saw him and contacted
Safe Haven of Iowa County.
Conor was clearly starving and suffering
from having to burn more calories just to keep
warm that he was able to scavenge. The lady
who saw him took a chance and called hoping
that Safe Haven would take the dog in.
When Safe Haven volunteers went to get him
he was clearly not used to being on a leash
and not easily persuaded to come get in a car.
However, he was so thin that he weighed only
47 pounds, even though he appeared to be
a Labrador/Mastiff mix. He was also lethargic
from lack of nutrition. He was so weak, we had
to gather his long legs together and lift him into
the car.
Safe Haven got him to a vet who estimated
his age to be about 8 months and pointed out
that he was obviously undernourished. The
veterinarian suggested we should feed him as
we would a 60 pound dog to get him back to
his ideal weight. He also pointed out that his
mouth/lips were swollen as if he had been exposed to something that caused injury to his
mouth.
We found he did have a good appetite and
was able to eat in spite of whatever the irritant
to his mouth and lips had been. As he gained
strength and confidence it became so obvious
that he was a very happy and loving young dog
with a lot of energy.
He seemed to learn quickly and turned into

a typical young dog full of energy and playfulness. His playfulness was especially charming
because he was a bit like a teenager with legs
flying in all directions when he ran!
During December, two different families applied for Conor and seemed as though they
would be a good forever home for him. However, Conor has so much energy and enthusiasm
wrapped up in his large body that each of those
families decided he was a bit much for them.
Conor learned quickly and knew commands;
but he was still very young and wildly enthusiastic about life in general.
Finally, on January 2, a family made a oneand-a-half-hour drive after work to come get
Conor after having been approved to adopt.
Volunteers held their breaths as we waited to
hear how that family and Conor were getting
along in his new home.
His new mom’s note to Safe Haven says it all:
“As promised, here is a brief update on Conor.
We decided to re-name him, so he is now Charlie. My kids and I instantly fell in love with him
and he is doing very well! He is our gentle giant
– he is still very much a puppy and has puppy
energy, but he also loves to snuggle.
He needed just a little refresher on house
training but is a quick learner and we are learning his cues as well. He has learned ‘sit’ already and ‘drop it’ and we are working on ‘stay’
and ‘lay down’. He loves shoes so we gave him
quite a few chew toys and he is enjoying those
options as well as playing with my other dog,
Lucy. My daughter has been wearing him out
every day and they have become best friends.”
