Mario reaches new heights…
e’ve been waiting for this platformer
since… well, let’s see now, since Mario
64, the game that blew not just
platformers but the whole of gaming
apart. And the good news is that, while Mario Galaxy
doesn’t quite re-invent gaming once again, it does
have the most power-ups and transformations of any
Mario game to date (Mario as a bee, anyone?) and it
uses the Wii Remote to the max. The object, of course,
is to collect stars – only this time you’re travelling
round a chain of weird planetoids and other space
stuff. Varying degrees of gravity has strange effects
on Mario’s ability to jump and it also pulls him towards
certain bodies while he’s travelling from planet to
planet. You move our plumber around with the
Nunchuck – shaking it pulls off a spin attack (useful
for bashing back projectiles and enemies). You jump
and perform acrobatics with the Remote. The action
starts at the Mushroom Kingdom’s Star Festival, which
is interrupted by the news that Bowser, curse him, has
created his own galaxy and imprisoned Princess
Peach there. Now dim the lights and enjoy.

B
ioWare (Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights,
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) has
always pushed the RPG envelope to its limits,
and now it looks like the developer has done
it once again.
Mass Effect is an epic, story-heavy space opera
that centres on the exploits of starship commander
Shepard. He doesn’t know it when the game kicks off,
but he’s humanity’s only hope to
solve a mystery that
could wipe
civilization from
the galaxy. As

Shepard you hop from planet to planet, meeting and
chatting to the more friendly locals, searching for the
truth clue by clue. When the reception is hostile, it’s
time for straight-up, third-person, squad-based
combat. In between the fighting and talking, there are
powerful resources and technologies to be discovered,
including effect-heavy biotic powers and sciencebased magic – just the sort of stuff you need when
you find yourself in an unfolding galactic war...

Barbaros’ Treasure is your goal in
this adventure that has you

suits the Wii perfectly. Out soon.

F ull of fresh ideas as well as big bangs, Call of
Duty 4 is back in the very capable hands of
original developers Infinity Ward. Set in the
present day, the single-player game keeps
you busy taking on a bunch of Russian nationalists
bent on resurrecting the Soviet Union. One moment
you’re fast-roping into the action from a swarm of
Blackhawk helicopters, the next you’re salvaging the
enemy from hulking AC-130 warplanes thousands of
feet above the battlefield...
Multiplayer-wise, you now gain experience points
for every kill, for ‘assists’ (injuring a foe for a squad
mate to finish off) and for stylish moves such as killing

you pull the pin on a grenade before you die… CoD 4
on the DS has foot-based missions as well as on-rails
sections where you control the gun in helicopters and
Hummers. Stylus-based mini-games include diffusing

include Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.

Beware! The truth is out there…
Gobblers
N
o doubt partly because Philip Pullman’s
source novel is so great, this fantasy actionadventure, the first of the Dark Materials
trilogy, is better than your average movie
tie-in. As in the book, the Golden Compass follows
the trials of Lyra Belacqua, a girl who leaves the
comforts of England to rescue her friend Roger, who’s
been kidnapped and brought to the North Pole by an
evil organisation known as the Gobblers. For Lyra,
it’s the beginning of an epic quest filled with strange
characters and lush environments. Through it all you
are guided by the alitheometer, a mysterious device
that always points to the truth. Lyra performs most of
the platforming in the game, though she does have
the help of her daemon companion Pantalaimon (Pan,
for short). A shape-shifting animal, Pan can transform
himself into a sloth, a hawk, a wildcat and an ermine.
Her bear friend Iorek Byrnison (who has a dark past
that is gradually revealed as the story unravels) does
the combat stuff, ably rending scary monsters with his
claws and maw (yikes!). Pullman fans should pull this
off the shelves at once.
Format: DS, PC, PSP, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii
Very much in the style of

>> PC, PS3, Xbox 360
horr
2 005’s Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube was
quite simply one of the best games for years.
But now it has been re-released for the Wii,
is it still any good? Too right! Set six years
after the third instalment, Leon S Kennedy, now a
government agent, is sent to darkest Europe to rescue
the US president’s daughter. As soon as you arrive,
hoards of maniacal villagers and cultists greet you...
No mere zombies, this lot dodge bullets, set traps and
crash through windows to get their taste of blood.
The controls of Resident Evil 4 on the Wii are
much more fun than in previous versions and they’re
pretty precise too. You move Leon with the Nunchuck
and aim and shoot with the Remote. To
use your knife, you swing the Remote…
The graphics are the same as the
GameCube version, but that is not a
worry. With all the extras from the PS2
game combined with the Wii’s superior
controls, it’s the perfect game for
schlock fans who have the normally
family-friendly Wii.

hdigogitty!
At last – it’s a great Simpsons game! Excellent…
onsidering it’s the funniest sitcom and
cartoon of all time (or was until Family Guy),
it really is quite remarkable that there hasn’t
been a single decent Simpsons game. Until
now, that is, for the prosaically-titled The Simpsons
Game is great fun.
The silly plot has Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and
Maggie discover that they are trapped in a videogame.
To help them to escape, you play every family
member, freely roaming Springfield completing minigames and meeting every one of its weird and
wonderful residents. Each Simpson has their own set
of comedy abilities. Homer, for instance, can stun
enemies with his flatulence and transform himself into
a giant ball of fat that will mow down foes in his path.
The mini-games, which lampoon a host of famous
platformers and shooters, can involve anything from
fighting off pods of killer dolphins to foiling robbery
attempts. All the actors voices are present (and their
jokes lift some of the more simplistic games) and it’s
the best rendition of Springfield and its folk in a game
ever. Woohoo!

T eaming up Sega and Nintendo’s mascots
in one game is a great idea in itself – but
dumping them together in an athletics sim
is genius. Officially licensed by the 2008
Beijing Olympics (Sega already has the license for
the ‘straight’ version, you see), its entertaining events
include the 100 metres, judo, table tennis, hammer
and clay pigeon shooting. Participants from both
universes line up for the Games. Mario and Sonic are
here, of course, alongside the likes of Luigi, Yoshi,
Bowser and Doctor Eggman. They are each better
suited to some sports than others so the 16 athletes
are split into four character types (like in Mario
Strikers), to make multiplayer
games work. So for instance Sonic
is the speed class, and so is Yoshi
plus two others. A great party game

vil Regent Majd Addin lies dead
in Jerusalem’s central square, your slim
mechanical dagger having bitten deep
into his neck. But there’s no time to
admire your handiwork – half the city’s guards are
now after you. So you’re off and running through
crowded alleyways, climbing walls and leaping
across rooftops with amazing nimbleness. After a
tense chase, you eventually loose your pursuers.
It didn’t all go as planned, but your target is dead.
One down, eight to go...
Welcome to the sumptuous-looking Assassin’s
Creed, the long-awaited adventure game set in the
era of the Crusades. It drops you into the hooded
robes of Altair (in Arabic, ‘The Flying One’), a
top member of the Hashshashin assassin
sect. You are tasked with eliminating nine
malevolent figures who are involved

assassin’s creed
Jerusalem,
Acre and
Damascus. These
cities not only look terrific
but they’re also brought to
life with teeming populations that
interact with you. Crowds can be used
as cover to blend in, but they can also react
badly to your actions. Rushing and shoving raises
suspicions; kill an innocent bystander and they will
turn on you and alert the guards.
Assassin’s Creed is made by the developers
of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, so if you
do land yourself in trouble, you have the power to
escape with nifty acrobatics. You can edge along
and scale walls, climb onto roofs and skip across
narrow planks and poles high above the city streets
like a bird. You are indeed ‘The Flying One’.
Insane leaps...
As an assassin, you are armed to the teeth
with the tools of your trade. Altair carries four
main types of weapon: a long sword, a short sword,
throwing knives and a small crossbow. His special
concealed dagger, which retracts mechanically to
avoid notice, is reserved for his targets.
Assassin’s Creed is not just about doing
acrobatics on rooftops and chucking daggers
around, though. There is also a great deal of
emphasis on cunning and careful planning.
Surely two important things that every successful
assassination requires.
As you get to grips with the game, you’ll
discover lots of side-quests, some of which have
an impact on your core missions. One side-quest,
for instance, has you stop some men harassing
a group of women. In return, these women get
their husbands to attack the guards when they’re
chasing you. When you want to take a break from
questing, you can simply explore a vast world,
having fun baiting the guards.
Fun, but also requiring stealth and brains as
well as brawn, Assassin’s Creed is a great choice if
you fancy a truly epic adventure this Christmas.

Animal Crossing seems
ridiculously simplistic at first.
There are no platforms to jump or
any evil goons to deal with. What you do
have is a cute little house to keep up in a village
populated by friendly animals. Gardening, fishing
and fossil hunting are the most stressful activities
you can get up to. Playable online, it is extremely
addictive. And with over 600 different pieces of
furniture alone to collect, Wild World has a seriously
long shelf life. It also runs in real-time, with
changing seasons and a calendar of events, which
means you’ll visit the town daily to see what’s
going on. An alternative life on your DS? All aboard!

New Super
Mario Bros.
✚
✚
This game is for the whole family – from
kids to OAPs. Lots of fun, it's good for you,
too. The idea of all three games, which began with
Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your
Brain?, is to exercise your mind by playing puzzles
for 10 minutes each day. The puzzles, which use
both the stylus and the DS’ microphone, range from
simple maths problems and spot the difference to
memory tests and comprehension. Both the first
game and the sequel, More Brain Training, also lay
on multiplayer games and versions of Sudodko.
A sister game, Big Brain Academy takes a more
colourful and gamey approach to keeping you all
(err, what’s the phrase?) mentally fit.

We didn't think it was possible, but Nintendo
has somehow managed to follow the super
Super Mario Bros. 3! The basics of the game are
the same. You dash and hop through scrolling
levels, picking up power-ups and avoiding nasties.
Among the all-new power-ups, there is one that
turns Mario into a giant and one that shrinks him
into mini-Mario… New moves include a nifty
triple jump and useful wall jump. It all happens in
zippy 2D, but the vibrant graphics are very much
in glorious 3D. Alongside the single-player mode,
there’s also a wireless multiplayer mode where you
can battle a mate playing Luigi across a series of
bonus extra levels. An essential for Mario fans.

Sight Training

After honing our minds with Brain Training,
Nintendo is now intent on advancing our
ocular powers too. In line for treatment are such
areas such as hand-eye co-ordination, peripheral
vision and ‘dynamic visual acuity’ (we don’t know
what that is either, but we reckon we want more
of it). As with Brain Training, Sight Training takes
the form of a series of daily mini-game workouts.
These workouts include activities such as Box Tap,
where you furiously tap a series of moving red
boxes before they disappear and Fast Match, where
you must decide if two briefly flashing symbols
matched. Sporty-type games include Table Tennis,
where you slide your stylus across the screen to
volley the ball back. Survive 40 volleys to earn a
perfect score…

Phantom Hourglass
✚
Sporting the same cel-shaded style as Wind
Waker but displayed from a classic top-down
adventuring perspective, this is a lovely first Zelda
outing on the DS. Easy to pick up, Phantom’s charm
lies in its ingenious controls. You use the touch
screen to make Link move; you swing your sword
by drawing a short line in front of Link or by tapping
a specific enemy. He somersaults forward when
you draw a small circle. Best of all, his boomerang
is thrown in by drawing its flight path. You can
also use the touch screen to make notes of secret
treasures and items on the map simply by writing
them down. Clever and engrossing, the legacy of
Zelda is safe on the DS.

After a string of off-shoots, Pokémons
Diamond and Pearl are the games old-school
fans have been waiting for. They are basically
the same game, only they each have exclusive
Pokémon. Importantly, thanks to some of the best
wi-fi support on the DS, you can trade between
each game easily, as well as battle foes and friends
around the world. Wi-fi fighting aside, there is a
single-player quest that will also take up a ton of
your time. You start off as a young trainer and battle
your way up the rankings. Over 100 new creatures

scrapping, faster travel and a better inventory
system all help make it worth it once again.

Certainly anyone can enjoy it, be they a casual

alongside the four-player wi-fi game. As with
previous games, it all takes the form of a board
game split into five different environments. Luck
in rolling the dice will provide you with individual
mini-games that can earn you points and stars,
while group mini-challenges give everyone with

The thing which sets this movie quiz apart

It’s a guitar in your pocket! A remake of the
cult Japanese hit Hiite Utaeru DS Guitar M06, Jam Sessions lets you use your stylus to pick
or your finger to strum the touch screen, using the
D-pad and shoulder buttons as a virtual fretboard.
There are three modes: Performance, Free Play
and Tutorial. Performance presents you with notes
and even lyrics and Free Play lets you just express
yourself. Tutorial teaches you all the mysteries of
how to play this marvellous little instrument-inyour-pocket. There is no ‘multiplayer’ mode as
such, but that’s missing the point. Jam Sessions is
as unlimited as a real guitar, so there is nothing to
stop you and any music-minded friends jamming
together whenever you like.
In this instalment of the hit quiz series,
the focus is on – you guessed it – movies.
And it has more than 5,000 questions on this
topic too (the 360’s Scene It only has 1,800-odd,
but it does have flash HD clips). Hollywood Quiz
includes questions on such things as celebrities’
lives and Hollywood gossip and has a choice of
easy or pretty easy questions, so you don’t have
to be Barry Norman to be able to enjoy it. As with
previous Buzz! games, it’s the game’s structure
that always makes it possible to come from behind
to win against the odds and there is, of course,
plenty of room for private vendettas and tempers.
There are loads of clips, but these crop up rarely
and don’t spoil the pace of the fun.

The third game in the Buzz! Junior series
has a distinctly ghoulish twist. Monster
Rumble has 25 mini-games scattered about a
spooky mansion... Activities? They range from
battling tentacled creatures escaping from

neighbours… Depending on the game, success
relies on lightning-fast reactions and a little
fiendish strategy. Points are awarded at the end of
each round – the winner at the end is the player
who has collected the most ghoulish eyeballs. In

It’s an incredibly lush game world all

One for the Earth!
y the makers of that other great rumble
in the jungle Far Cry, Crysis follows
Delta Force soldier Jake Dunn as he’s
dispatched to a tropical island in the
South China Sea to investigate a meteorite crash.
Meteorites come from outer space, of course, and
eventually it does indeed become evident that you
are dealing with aliens here – and that this is just
the prelude to a full invasion. And as your battle
to save Earth begins, the aliens flash freeze the
island into a ghostly white frozen landscape…
It’s a great premise but the real ace card here is
the environments, which are simply spectacular
to roam through. You can either go for a gung-ho
or stealthy approach in the single-player game.
You can also customise your weapons and armour
as you go. Online Crysis has all the multiplayer
offerings you could hope for, but really it’s the
astonishing game world that takes centre stage.

Gore blimey! This way for full-on, convincing and bloody warfare…
T
his is the revamped third entry in
developer Raven Software’s graphic first
person modern war shooter. This series
is famous for its realism (Raven went
so far as to hire a mercenary as a consultant
for the original). It’s also known for the debut
of the GHOUL rendering system, which gave us
enemy character models that could be shot up
convincingly graphic style. In this update, you
take on the role of a mercenary as you blast your
way through hotspots in the Middle East, Africa,
Asia and Eastern Europe. Carrying on the style of
the original games, Payback boasts a gloriously
gory character dismemberment system. If you
shoot an enemy in the arm, that arm will fall off
and he’ll have to defend himself without it. In fact,
the flying limbs and gouts of blood mark Payback
out as the blood and guts title of these shooters.
In-your-face environmental effects also play a big
role in the game’s look. Throw a grenade and the
explosion or smoke will fill the room instantly. Over
30 real-world battlefield weapons underline all the
realism further. For online multiplayer play, there
are the standard Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch
and Capture the Flag modes alongside exciting
and gory Elimination and Demolition fracas. A
gentleman’s shooter.

CONFERENCE
CHIPS Franchisees and staff gathered for the
6th Annual CHIPS Conference. Joint Managing
Directors, front centre, Don McCabe & Nik Agar
back – in black!
The Sixth Annual CHIPS conference was held at Ramside Hall, Durham this year
E
very year the CHIPS conference gets bigger and better and this
was no exception.
Hitting a magnificent six this time around, the conference
brings together CHIPS franchisees and staff from all over
the country plus top people from the games industry with only one
compelling issue on their minds – how are they going to make you grin
like a daft cat whenever you go into a CHIPS store.
You see it’s not just by chance that CHIPS stores are owned,
managed and staffed by people who really know what they’re talking
about when it comes to games; it’s because they do their homework.
It’s a great job if you can get it. Long, hard, gruelling homework
that, in this case, involved zooming round in fast cars, playing games till
their joints locked, swanning about in a posh hotel and eating so much
Christmas dinner that it started coming out of their ears.
But it’s not all fun. In order to make sure they know all about the
new games which will be hitting the shelves soon, each delegate had
to endure hours of secret clips and the chance to play loads of ace new
games from the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
As you can see from the list below of all the publishers and
distributors which supported CHIPS, all the big names were there in
force to put over their ‘What’s Hot For Christmas’ message.
There was also a glittering hall of delights where stunned delegates
were forced to wander around looking at brilliant new gadgets, gizmos
and games ages before anyone else got to see them.
Then, exhausted, the hard-working CHIPS folk had to cheer on
those colleagues who had really pulled out the stops over the last year
at the glittering awards ceremony (see panel right).
After that, they had to endure a full Christmas party, play lots more
games (Scene It and Guitar Hero proving particularly popular by this
stage) and dance, before finally being allowed back into their hotel
rooms for a much-deserved rest.
Remember this was all for YOUR benefit and, believe me, if you pop
into CHIPS, you’ll really reap the rewards. It’s not all fun and games
working at CHIPS you know…
WE’d like to thank! The exhibitors and sponsors... Activision, CP Waites, CentreSoft, Computer Bookshops, EA, Faragher Jones, Focus, The Game Factory, Gem, Hobby Games,

>What was your
first console?
My first console was
the Sega Master
System 2.
>What is your
favourite all-time
game?
Project Gotham
Racing 2 on the Xbox.
>What do you like about it so much?
Project Gotham Racing 2 is serious up to a point but it
is not as arcade-like as, for example, the Need For
Speed series.
>What consoles do you play on?
At the moment, I mostly play on my Xbox 360 and my
Nintendo DS.
>What are your top five games ever?
Oh, that is a hard choice! Firstly, I’d have to go with
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past on the SNES. Then I
would say Goldeneye on the N64, Gran Turismo on the
PSX, Project Gotham Racing 2 on the Xbox and finally
Shenmue on the Sega Dreamcast.
>What games are you most looking
forward to this year?
I am looking forward to Kane & Lynch: Dead Men plus
Call Of Duty 4.
>How long have you worked for CHIPS?
I have worked for CHIPS since June of this year, when
our store was taken over by CHIPS.
>What do you most like about working
for CHIPS?
I love being around people who like games as much as
I do. I also really enjoy the great atmosphere that we
have at the Kirkham store. It is a good job and I can
work it around my university hours. I’m currently
studying for a degree in business studies at the
University of Central Lancashire.
>Who else works at the Kirkham store?
I work with Matt Molloy, Mike Yates and Dave Wilson.

Fancy making Grunt heads explode to the cries of children
cheering? Then you need some skulls…
Hey Chief!
Hidden throughout the singleplayer/co-op game of Bungie’s
brilliant alien shooter are 14
different skulls (eastereggs)
which, if collected, add all
sorts of twists to make your
campaign even more challenging.
So if you fancy taking on hoards
of enemies who like nothing
better than chucking LOTS of
grenades at you, read on.
Note: You must start from the
beginning of a level, in Normal,
Heroic or Legendary difficulty to
get any skull.
GOLD SKULLS
>Iron Skull
Effect: Restart level from beginning if you die.
Level: Sierra 117.
Location: At the very end of the level, in a
corner on the roof of the building where Sergent
Johnson is being held prisoner.
>Black Eye Skull
Effect: Melee enemies to get back shields.
Level: Crow’s nest.
Location: In the room at the beginning of the
second level, on top of the piping near the big
display.
>Tough Luck Skull
Effect: Enemies dodge grenades and projectiles
earlier.
Level: Tsavo Highway.
Location: When the big covenant cruiser flies
overhead, there is some piping by the road,
beneath which are support beams reaching out
over a cliff. Along the first of these beams, to
your left, the skull is on a rock ledge.
>Catch Skull
Effect: Enemies chuck loads of grenades.
Level: The Storm.
Location: In the area where the Wraiths appear.
36
WINTER 07/08
Before you destroy the Wraiths, find the Skull
on the roof of the round building next to the antiair tank. You can jump on to it from the back of
a Warthog.
>Fog Skull
Effect: Lose your motion sensor.
Level: FloodGate.
Location: On the roof of the building next to the
missile launcher is a single Flood holding the
skull. Kill him just before he jumps and it’ll drop
it to the ground.
>Famine Skull
Effect: Only half enemy ammo available.
Level The Ark.
Location: When the road branches off into two
areas, take the right-hand path. Climb the rocks
to the right of the structure and jump onto it. At
the far end, you can zoom in and see the skull in
an alcove. Grenade jump up to it and eventually
you’ll grab it.
>Thunderstorm Skull
Effect: Enemies ranked up to their next level,
making them stronger.
Level: The Covenant.
Location: Land your Hornet near the second
force field generator – the one the Arbiter
disabled. The skull is on the top of it, at the end
of a ramp jutting over the sea.
>Tilt Skull
Effect: Increases enemy armour.
Level: Cortana.
Location: In the circular room where Cortana
mentions that she ‘Likes to play games too’,
on the left side where you will see a set of
mushroom-shaped outgrowths along the wall.
Get on these, jump right onto another set and
then jump on to top of the ceiling of the room,
where you’ll find the skull.
>Mythic Skull
Effect: All enemies have double shields/health.
Level: Halo.
Location: At the beginning, head into the
canyon hugging the right wall until you turn right
down a path, down which you’ll find the allimportant skull.
tips halo 3
SILVER SKULLS
>Blind Skull
Effect: Lose your HUD and shooting arm.
LEVEL: Sierra 117.
Location: After the gold armoured Brute, two
enemy dropships will appear downstream. Head
for the furthest dropship, keeping to the right
side of the stream. Continue right towards the
cliff edge. The skull is on the rock extending
over the lake.
>
Grunt Birthday Party
Skull
Effect: Shoot a Grunt in the head and they
explode into confetti to the sound of children
cheering.
Location: Just before you jump down the pipe
to team up with the Arbiter, stop at the edge.
Look down and you’ll see a small ledge with a
green arrow. Jump onto this ledge, find a secret
room – and the skull.
>Cowbell Skull
Effect: Explosions are bigger.
Level: The Ark.
Location: Deep into the level, in the middle
TIPS
of the desert area where you must defeat the
Scarab, is a big structure. Take a Gravity Lift,
head up the ramp. Next, head up the huge ramp
inside and find a room full of Explosives. After
this room is a stairway to the level below. The
Skull is at the top of the room, on the uppermost
platform. Use the Gravity Lift to get to it.
>Unknown Skull
Effect: No HUD (it is, in effect, a second Blind
Skull).
Level: Cortana.
Location: In the room with the three generators
that you must destroy. You will find the skull on
the ceiling, just above the door that you enter
through.
>I Would Have Been
Your Daddy Skull
Effect: Various, including Marines shouting ‘For
Spartaaaa!’ as a battlecry; Brutes saying ‘We
don’t take Mastercard;’ Grunts exclaiming, ‘I’m
alive? This game rules!’
Level: The Covenant.
Location: After defeating the Scarabs, go to the
seven Ring Holograms. You must jump through
these rings in this following order (1 is at the
entrance, 7 is at the end): 4 6 5 4 5 3 4. After,
the IWHBYD Skull is next to the bridge to the
Prophet of Truth.

Dear CHIPS
Is it true that GTA IV won’t be available on the
PS3 until next year? It feels like I have been
waiting forever for it to arrive and I can’t believe
I might have to wait even longer!
William Lloyd, Edinburgh
We are keen to get our hands on it too.
We can confirm it will be available in
2008 although the date is still to be
confirmed. We are told it will come out at
the same time as the Xbox 360 version.
The next issue of CHIPS will be
coming out in the spring and will be
packed full of all the usual news,
reviews and features to keep you upto-date with everything gaming.
We hope (pray?) that we’ll be able
to offer you an in-depth look at Grand
Theft Auto IV and we’ll be bringing you
tips and cheats for all of the bestselling games for Christmas.
Next year should be a great
one for gamers everywhere as the
next-generation consoles ‘mature’
and we start to see the games that
the X360, Wii and the PS3 deserve. It
always takes time for game designers
to really take advantage of new
technology. We can’t wait to see what
happens. In the meantime, happy
gaming and keep it CHIPS.

o you know what an age rating is on a game?
Do you know where to look for it? Do you know
what it means? Do you know the difference
between PEGI and BBFC ratings?
PEGI ratings act as a guidance to parents. They
appear on a bottom corner of the front of a games case,
but could also appear on the back and the disc itself. If a
game has any content that parents should be concerned
about, they will have a BBFC rating rather than a PEGI.
BBFC ratings must appear on front, spine and back of
the case and are also be printed on the disc as a legal
requirement. It is a criminal offence for a retailer to sell
games to anyone under the age indicated.
These ratings DO NOT refer to the difficulty levels so
even if you have a very competent 10 year old, it doesn’t
mean they can cope with the content of a game, even
though they may technically be able to play it.

NEXT ISSUE…
Dear CHIPS
I recently bought a Wii from
CHIPS and I love it. As well
as being a keen gamer, I am
also a surfer. My friends tell
me that the Wii is soon to get a
surfing game with surf board. This sounds too
good to be true! Can you confirm?
Marcus Tindal, Portslade
There are rumours that DVD playback is
going to be available in Japan but there
are no plans in the foreseeable future to
bring it out in the UK. We wouldn’t hang
around, try and get yourself a Wii now!
However, the Wii is going to be in short
supply again this Christmas so if you
spot one, do grab it!
