First off I have to apologize to anyone who didn`t get to
© Merv Coleman “First off I have to apologize to anyone who didn’t get to grow up in Red Lodge—you missed out! As I travel the country, people ask me where I’m from and when I describe Red Lodge they immediately want to make the trip. Where else can you experience the rich seasons, like early spring days when the sun comes out and starts melting the snow, the beautiful summers hiking and fishing the mountain lakes, golfing and the 4th of July, fall colors on Rock Creek, football games, and of course the Winter Wonderland: skiing, Christmas stroll, and the world’s best place to bring in the New Year? I always tell people I meet that no matter where you come from or what you like—you will love spending time and experiencing Red Lodge.” © Merv Coleman © Merv Coleman © Merv Coleman A 5th generation native of Carbon County, Jess Peterson graduated from Red Lodge High School in 2000. Soon after college graduation, he became the head lobbyist for the national stockgrowers’ association R-CALF. And now as president of Western Skies Strategies and a registered Senate and House lobbyist, Jess represents his clients on issues dealing with agriculture, international trade, and grassroots campaigns. Jess also manages a cow-calf operation in Eastern Montana and says that the things he misses most when he’s in D.C. are “the Big Sky and the land, cattle, horses, and people under it!” 40 W W W. It is like you have stepped back in time...” – posted on www.IGOUGO.com shopping N o treadmill? No problem. While you’re here, you’ll discover a whole new way to stay in shape: Power Shopping. Who needs to stare at the same old wall for hours at a stretch, when you could spend the day buzzing from shop to shop down Broadway, checking out unique clothing, furnishings, and décor you just won’t find back home? From antiquing to quilting, or home-made fudge to hand-made toys, these unique and charming shops are sure to delight your shopper’s heart. Throw in the fact that all of these locally owned stores are run by helpful, knowledgeable staff, and it’s hard to go wrong. Most of them will even package and ship your treasures home for you. So what are you waiting for? Lace up those trainers and hit the street! It’s hard not to be charmed by Red Lodge’s historic character. From the elaborate stone and brick detailing of many of the buildings along Broadway to the dainty and elegant gingerbread ornamentation on homes throughout town, the past can feel very present in this town. © Merv Coleman For an often-overlooked example of this, walk into most any of the shops along Broadway, and look up. Those pressed-tin ceilings overhead were a mainstay of Western architecture around the turn of the century. Ironically, when the elaborately designed tin plates were first installed, massproduced metal ceilings were scoffed at by Eastern architectural critics. Such “sheet iron elegance” was allegedly a “cheap, quick, and easy” attempt to present a delusional façade of urbanity in backwater rural areas.
